GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE
TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1996
Written by Roger Newman
Directed by Joanne Sedwick

Bauer Kitchen
Rick, NewMichelle, and Abby are sitting around watching the Brent Lawrence
story on WSPR. Abby signs that she saw Cutter and Marion the night before
her surgery when she and Rick went for a walk. Rick asks is she sure?

Spaulding
Alan-Michael, Amanda, and Alan are distraught about the news broadcast and
shouting at each other. How could this happen? They quickly deduce that
it must have had something to do with Roger's earlier visit to the office.

Towers
The crowd is still assembled from yesterday where Roger is crowing about
what a nice thing he did for Marcus by putting this whole story on TV.
Gilly, Marcus, Griffith, Holly, and Fletcher are all angry at Roger and he
can't seem to understand why. Finally Holly matter-of-factly explains that
he's just killed Lucy Cooper. Roger still doesn't understand.

Lighthouse
Lucy is still trying (not very successfully) to escape.

Mall
In a rerun from yesterday, FauxBrent spies himself on all the display
televisions just as J notices him and recognizes his face. Hey, it's you,
he shouts. Brent is off but J overtakes him with a flying tackle. When a
guard pulls J off, Brent insists J was trying to steal his wallet. Brent
absconds, leaving J in the custody of a store security guard.

Spaulding
Amanda, Alan and Alan Michael continue shouting at each other. AM is
crying and so desperate that he finally agrees to let Alan help him. Alan
and Amanda leave to go after Roger.

Lighthouse
Lucy is using a butcher knife to try and saw through a chain/combination
lock. She finally decides it will be easier to pick the lock...if only she
can think like Brent in order to figure out the combination he has set.
After several wrong attempts she is successful with 4-7-95--the date of the
rape. She is finally out of the bedroom.

Towers
Holly tries to explain why Roger was irresponsible in airing the Brent
Lawrence story. Gilly is angry that Roger usurped her as head of news.
Roger calls her a little girl and reminds her that everything at the
station is HIS. Enter an angry Alan and Amanda.

Bauer Kitchen
When Abby finally makes Rick understand what she saw, he says she must
report it to the police. She is reluctant and NewMichelle says it's too
much for her, but Rick insists. The three leave for the police station.

TOWERS
Gilly leaves to go pull the plug on Roger's disaster. Alan calls Roger
despicable (I guess it takes one to know one...) and the general
Roger-bashing continues, abated only by Dina the Deluded, who insists that
they all stop ragging on her delightful hubby. Enter Hart, who proclaims
Roger only did it for the ratings.

SPAULDING
AM is pacing, waiting for Brent to contact him as Nick and Susan enter.
They attempt to console him.

LIGHTHOUSE
Lucy has finally made it to the computer room where she logs on and types:
Faith comes into our lives on four legs. (an apparent reference to their
rarely seen dog) AM responds and Lucy returns, typing He's holding me
at...Enter Brent who quickly unplugs the modem and leers menacingly at his
captive. (Once again, if not for all this excessive typing, Lucy might be
free.....

POLICE STATION
Levy's quizzing his entire force of three officers and wants to know who
spilled the beans. Nell confesses...she's really sorry, but Roger tricked
her and pumped her for information. Enter J, and shortly afterward, Nola.
J tries to explain about his unjust arrest.

SPAULDING
AM is crying frantically. Nick says it might just be a glitch and that he
should think positively. Susan insists Lucy is really smart...and tough.
(And if you believe that I have a bridge for sale, really cheap...)

LIGHTHOUSE
Brent yells at Lucy and starts wrecking all his equipment. His voice and
his words echo the things we have heard his mother say. He says she has to
die; he has to kill her now; he has no choice. Lucy embraces him (?)
perhaps in an attempt to sooth this psychotic beast.

POLICE STATION
Frank and Levy piece together what just happened at the mall and deduce
that Lucy must be close to Springfield. Nola defends what J did, but
cautions him to be careful in the future. NewMichelle has arrived and,
seeing J, tries to explain about what happened on their date. He responds
in a condescending tone. Meanwhile Abby, through a signed interpreter, is
making her statement to the police. Rick tells her how proud his is and
the three leave. Enter Cleary, still distraught about her actions and
trying to explain to Frank. He tells her not to worry.

TOWERS
Roger continues to behave like the pompous fool he is with only the Deluded
Dina defending him. Cut to Holly and Fletcher on the side. They realize
this is a good time to get a sample of Roger's speech. Holly agrees to
wear the wire and get close enough to record Roger for 45 seconds. Fletch
wants to make sure Agent 99 and Baby Red are OK. She assures him they are
both enjoying this very much. Holly approaches Roger and asks to talk to
him privately, where she begins lecturing him about his evil ways. He
assumes she misses him and can't stay away from him. Holly can't believe
what an ego the Dodger possesses. Enter Deluded Dina in rant mode,
screaming that everyone should leave Roger alone. Holly gratefully exits,
glad for an easy way out of this weird conversation.

LIGHTHOUSE
Lucy continues soothing Brent, insisting things don't have to be bad
between them. He is leery of her little girl games. She admits she used
to be a tease and asks him to help her stop. Yes, Brent replies. I'll
stop you permanently. She continues flattering him, insisting she feels
stupid, embarrassed, and wrong about everything. What everything, asks
Brent?

ROGER'S LAIR
Enter Roger and Dina. She's carrying on about how mean everyone else is to
him. He's flattered that she's so stupid, and tries to calm her down,
first by rubbing her shoulders, then by kissing her.

SPAULDING
Enter Frank with the news Brent was spotted at the mall. Nick encourages
AM to tell Frank about his most recent communication from Lucy, but AM is
reluctant. Finally they force him to tell.

LIGHTHOUSE
Lucy says she's sorry she did such terrible things to Brent. He agrees
what she did was unforgivable and insists she tell him he didn't rape her.
This is a bit much, even for Lucy, but grudgingly she finally repeats what
he wants to hear...he didn't rape her. Brent runs out and she collapses
onto the bed, horrified by what she has just said.

SPAULDING
AM and Frank are finally communicating. He remembers Lucy called him at
about 7:30 PM and Frank knows Brent was spotted at the mall at about 7:00
PM. They agree Lucy must be somewhere close to the mall, probably within a
half mile radius. Frank requests a map.

LIGHTHOUSE
Lucy is huddled on the floor, clutching a pillow and repeating over and
over again, "I'll do whatever it takes to survive...whatever it takes."

TOWERS
Hart tells Marcus he thinks it sucks that Roger set Marcus up to take the
fall for the Towers Club robbery. Marcus agrees and can't understand why
Deluded Dina can't see the forest for the trees. Hart knowingly replies,
her eyes will be opened wide very soon.

ROGER'S LAIR
Dina has lit candles for a romantic evening, but Roger rushes out to take
care of business and make them even richer in just a half hour tops. As
Dina sits down to wait Holly and Fletcher knock at the door. Dina assures
them she doesn't want to hear anymore nasty things about Roger, but they
gleefully reply that she hasn't heard the best part yet and she's going to
hear it whether she wants to or not. Freeze frame on Deluded Dina's
perplexed face.

Editorial Note: While Faux Brent is definitely not Frank Beatty, he's
growing into this role and doing quite well, IMHO. This is such intense
material, I think it's easier to watch Marc Wolfe. There is still some
distance between Marc and the character that makes his interpretation less
disturbing. JMHO
