GUIDING LIGHT UPDATE--1-9-96

LOWHAD:
Josh, wrapped in his overcoat, is sitting on the front porch of the Land of
Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams staring into space. Enter a nightgown-clad
Maura, who has awakened from a bad dream. Josh invites her to come and sit
down and watch the sun rise with him. Maura asks why it (meaning her
relationship with Reva) hurts so much.

ALAN-BEND:
Alan is ready to go to help Alan Michael until Reva reminds him that AM
hates him and has requested that he butt out.

SPRINGFIELD P. D.:
Enter AM, still wearing his Zorro outfit. He rushes up to Frank, Buzz,
Nell, and Levy--who seem severely challenged by this mysterious
case--shouting that he knows who they're looking for...Brent Lawrence.

LIGHTHOUSE:
Marion (played by Faux Brent) is drinking oolong tea and trilling on and on
despite Lucy's questions about where they are, why, etc. Eventually we
learn that they are hiding out in an abandoned old lighthouse that burned
down a while back (obviously Phillip Spaulding's old place, passed down to
Rick, Mindy & Nick, and last seen with Tangie and Little Bill during the
fire, I think.) Lucy begins to loseit saying she wants to go home and then
finding the door locked, but Marion, smooth as ever purrs, Oh dear, that's
not possible. Throughout this scene, Marion avoids looking at Lucy
directly and appears to be concentrating on her/his own schemes rather than
paying attention to Lucy.

ALAN-BEND:
Reva and Alan continue to rehash their earlier conversation about his going
to AM. In some ways, Reva seems glad that the shoe's now on the other foot
and she can try to keep Alan away from his children the same way he
counseled her.

SPRINGFIELD PD:
AM whips out Reva's drawing, explaining the entire plot of this story for
the last six months for anyone who will listen. Unfortunately, everyone in
the room with him had stupid pills for breakfast.

LIGHTHOUSE:
Lucy is up and around now, trying to cajole Marion and make things all
right--or at least find an escape route. Marion prattles on and on about
how this is the perfect place for a retreat and how this lighthouse was
once a beacon that guided ships...and it will guide her now, too, in what
she has to do. Lucy mumbles something about needing to get to work, and
steps outside onto the balcony. Marion joins her purring about how high up
they are and if she jumped he body would become twisted and broken like a
rag doll.

LOWHAD:
Josh mumbles some nonsense about how love sometimes hurts. Enter Nurse
Mutton, dressed in her crisp Cedar's uniform and cute cardigan sweater.
She delivers a gaggy speech about making mistakes and starting over again
and New Year's resolutions. Josh and Maura are completely mesmerized by
this pap and Maura resolves to like asparagus and not be so mean to Shane.
Josh is amazed and grateful...Annie says she is able to be this way because
of last night's passionate living room floor tryst.

CEDARS:
Reva's on her way to visit Pop. Meanwhile, Alex (alias Queenie) is
visiting him. He claims to be deathly ill...she insists he's only
malingering and that he likes lying in bed, watching TV and eating three
free meals a day. Enter Reva, in healer woman mode, causing an immediate
and full cure. Queenie chides him for faking his illness; he responds,
Blow it out your Beezer, Queenie.

SPRINGFIELD PD:
More arguing about the possibility of Brent being alive while AM patiently
tries to explain to the mentally challenged what we already know. He
points out that no one actually saw inside the coffin and that there was no
autopsy. Enter a forensics technician who announces that all the hair
samples match. Frank is incredulous. At some point during all this Alan
enters and Buzz attacks him.

LIGHTHOUSE:
For the first time we get a chance to see Marion's face up close. (Faux
Marion is doing a pretty good job, for a stand in, but it's really a shame
Frank Beaty isn't here to play these days.) Her lipstick is smeared (she
says she didn't have a mirror) but more than that, she's creepier than
Marion has ever been. It's hard to do justice to the mood of these scenes
in mere words. Lucy returns to the inside of the lighthouse, followed by
Marion. Lucy's trying to be more brave and steady...she tells Marion she
thinks she understands that Marion might have done some bad things (like
changing her HIV test results and trying to kill Susan) and that she knows
she needs some help. Marion congratulates Lucy on her intelligence and
says I've done those things but much, much more, too.

COMMERCIAL

LIGHTHOUSE:
Marion approaches and begins to subdue Lucy by grasping her on the
shoulders. Lucy wants to know who she is and how could she do this.
Marion, really getting wound up by now, shouts out Lucy's patient ID number
and brags that she would have changed the third test, too, except for some
blond in a pilgrim outfit. They shout at each other.

SPRINGFIELD PD:
Frank pulls Buzz off Alan and tries to calm him. Buzz suddenly remembers
that Brent was fingerprinted last year when he and Lucy were arrested for
skinny dipping in the country club pool. He's sure Cutter wouldn't have
thrown out those prints. Someone goes off to search for the prints. Alan
and AM argue; AM and Buzz hug.

CEDARS:
Queenie and Reva continue sparring and Queenie makes sure Hawk hears about
Reva's performance last night at the country club. Hawk asks Alex to
leave, but before she goes she tells Reva she really ought to leave town.
Hawk and Reva exchange affectionate, homespun greetings. He calls her a
magic elixir and pronounces himself now fit as a fiddle. He claims he
always knew she was alive and credits her with his life. They exchange
more sappy father/daughter hugs and down-home chat. Despite her mild
protestations to the contrary, he claims Josh still loves her.

COMMERCIAL:

CEDARS:
Hawk relates the history of Josh's grieving for Reva, insisting that when
she died "the light went out of his life", that the kids gave him a reason
to continue living, and that he chased after her in Europe. He insists
Josh only married Annie because he was lonely. Reva says, well now he got
on with his life and now I'm with Alan. Hawk insists she's not being
honest about her feelings for Josh and that Alan is a side winding snake.

LOWHAD:
Maura is finally off to school, happy as a clam, after an extended family
hug and kiss. More grown up hugging and kissing and then Josh is off to
work.

LIGHTHOUSE:
The shaking and shouting accelerates. Marion has Lucy in some kind of
wrestling hold, but Lucy insists she's not scared. Outloud, Lucy surmises
that Marion's problem is that she has a crush on Lucy. Marion retorts, You
think I'm some kind of crazed lesbian who can't get a date? Boy, are you
wrong...

COMMERCIAL:

LIGHTHOUSE:
More shaking and shouting. Marion rants on and on about being raped by
Lucy...his life was ruined by her...He lists all his victims, in
order...the man on the docks, Nadine, Cutter...I killed them all. Lucy is
shocked and appalled and hold her ears to avoid hearing more, but the
reality of Nadine begins to seep in anyway...

SPRINGFIELD PD:
AM and the rest of the crew are still here. Lots is going on at once. The
forensics technician enters to give Frank a manila envelope with the
personal effects from the victim at the docks. Frank says he'll look at it
later. Buzz muses about where Marion might have taken Lucy...he suspects
somewhere secluded. (DUH...) Meanwhile Nell has opened the envelope and
is looking at Deenie's jewelry. She notices an inscription inside the
wedding ring. Forensics is back again with a positive ID on Brent from
prints found at one of these crime scenes...I'm not sure which one.
Suddenly everyone notices Alan has disappeared.

LIGHTHOUSE:
Lucy wants to know why Marion did this. Marion, facing Lucy, removes his
wig and we watch Lucy stare into the camera.

CEDARS:
More of this annoying (and never ending scene) in which Hawk continues
trying to reassure Reva of Josh's love while she, not too strenuously,
protests otherwise. Finally she leaves, running into that Mutton woman in
the hallway.

SPRINGFIELD PD:
AM continues explaining to this stupefied crew about how Brent faked his
own death.
(Are the powers that be really convinced that viewers are going to drop in
from Mars and need all this explanation of everything that has happened for
the last year???)

LIGHTHOUSE:
Lucy, facing the audience: Oh, my God!
Brent, ripping off his face mask: Now do you understand, Lucy?
Lucy, suddenly all is crystal clear: You're BRENT!!! (obligatory freeze
frame)
