The Clinic
==========
Angie's leading Kayla around the loft, getting her dressed, with Jacob
in hot pursuit. He asks if she's going to talk to him about this? Talk yes,
Angie says, fight no. Jacob demands to know what Kayla's doing there.
Angie tells him not to frighten Kayla. Jacob says frighten HER, she's a
gangster, she pulled a gun on you. Angie says she's a child. Jacob says
bullets kill, it doesn't matter who pulls the trigger. He's bending over,
getting in Angie's face. Kayla says "stop it!" and smacks Jacob's hand
away. Angie tells her it's okay. Kayla tells Jacob to leave Angie alone.
Jacob grunts in frustration.

Kayla runs crying out of Angie's sleeping area (I hesitate to call it a
"bedroom" since it's a bed behind a curtain). Angie follows her, and
tells her that people can have arguments without hurting each other.
Jacob says that's right, he and Angie are "really good friends." :-)
Bernardo brings in the stuff from the agency. Angie asks him if Kayla
can hang out with him for awhile? Kayla doesn't want to, but Angie
says he's really nice. Bernardo says she can help him make deliveries.
Angie says that sounds like fun. Kayla holds out her hand for her $2.
Jacob witnesses that one with dismay... he can't believe Angie is giving
Kayla money to stay there. Angie says she's trying to keep her from
running away. Jacob says she doesn't belong here. Angie says that's
the problem, that she doesn't belong anywhere. Jacob says so anytime
she treats a misplaced juvenile delinquent... "A child!" Angie interrupts.
"A gun-toting child," counters Jacob, "and you're teaching her one hell
of a lesson, she pulls a gun on you and you ask her to stay, and give her
money?" Angie says if that's the only language she understands, she'll
give her some money to gain her trust. Jacob says she's going to have
every kid in the neighborhood lined up outside the door waiting for some
"trust." Angie gets mad, but Jacob says this is not Corinth, this is not
Pine Valley, and she's not used to dealing with urban kids. Angie thanks
him sarcastically for the vote of confidence. Jacob says he's not asking
her to be less caring or involved, but Angie says that's exactly what
he's asking, and it's not fair. Jacob sighs in frustration.

Jacob says he loves Angie. Angie says that isn't the issue. Jacob says
it is... they need to make time for themselves. Angie asks if he thinks
her practice is getting in the way. Jacob says he doesn't want to keep
her from doing what she set out to do. Angie says Kayla was carried
in here bleeding... and you took care of her, says Jacob, you're a doctor
not a social worker. She can't be everything to everybody; there are
people trained to take care of people like Kayla. Angie says everything
in its neat little file. Jacob says she's not listening. Angie says she's
hearing loud and clear... get 'em in, get 'em out in time for them to have
a nice quiet evening together, but life doesn't work that way. Jacob
says he's not the enemy. Angie says she's doing what she thinks is right.
If it's so right, asks Jacob, why did she hide Kayla?

The Penthouse
=============
Sydney tells Jocelyn that her lawyer is one of the best, but Jocelyn
made chopped liver out of him. Jocelyn, ever the modest, says all she
had to do was read the books; there was no way she could evict the
Corinthians without a long legal battle. Sydney says that's why her
first job is going to be such a tough one. Jocelyn (feeling a little slow)
asks what it's going to be. Sydney says "evict them." Jocelyn looks
nonplussed.

Jocelyn says there is no way she can help Miss Chase, who tells Jocelyn
to call her Sydney, evict those people. Sydney starts in with "I know
they're your friends..." Jocelyn says it's not that, but she's already
represented them in this matter; she could be disbarred, and Sydney
can verify that. Sydney says she'll take her word for it. Jocelyn asks
what she has against them, anyway? Sydney says believe it or not, it's
nothing personal; it's just that this building is her one safe harbor, and
she would like to keep it that way. Jocelyn says but she gave Richard
power of attorney to rent it out. Sydney says she gave him power of
attorney to *renovate* it, not rent it. The doorbell rings, and flowers
are delivered for Sydney, from "Mr. Chase." Jocelyn says they're
lovely. Sydney says Mr. Chase is a very special man (yeah, one who
lives in an urn...). Jocelyn says it must be nice. Jocelyn heard him
speak once when she was in law school. "Fordham, right?" Sydney
asks. Jocelyn asks how she knows where she went to law school?
Sydney says you didn't really think I'd hire you without having you
checked out, did you?

Sydney says it was just a routine background check. Jocelyn asks if
she found any skeletons? Obviously not, Sydney says, or we wouldn't
be having breakfast together. Jocelyn asks what she did find. Sydney
wonders why she wants to know. Jocelyn says maybe if she could get
an objective opinion of her life, she could make some sense out of it (do
people really talk like this with their brand-new boss? Wait, IOAS,
never mind). Sydney says you were married briefly, you went to
Corinth to defend your brother, and had a little run-in with Detective
Masters. Jocelyn says she still has the scars. Sydney continues that
he wrote an article about her that got her fired from Hayley and Morgan.
Jocelyn says she thought she didn't find any skeletons? Sydney says
anyone can get fired, and she happens to know that Jocelyn was doing
good work for them. She also happens to know that Hayley is one of the
stuffier firms in New York. Sydney asks if she's free Friday night?
And Saturday, and Sunday, Jocelyn says. Sydney says they'll have to
do something about that, but she's having a dinner party Friday and there
will be people Jocelyn should meet, mostly business associates, but one
can never tell. Sydney says let's drink a mimosa to a full social calendar.
Jocelyn says this one will be on me, there's an excellent bar downstairs.
Sydney says she's heard. Jocelyn smirks.

The Agency
==========
Tess and Nick are engaged in "morning after" rituals, getting dressed,
drinking coffee, etc. Nick's hung over, but is nevertheless swigging
from a bottle. Tess says tequila has a way of sneaking up on you. Nick
says if you're gonna drink, do it right. Tess asks if it's true that he can
remember everything he says and does when he drinks. Nick says
absolutely. Then, Tess asks, how would you rate our evening together?
Nick hedges, saying that he always likes to get the lady's opinion first.
Tess says on a scale of 1-10, it was a 20. Nick, smoking a cigarette,
looks puzzled.

Nick says okay, I give, what happened last night? Tess says we made
beautiful music together... on your guitar, then you passed out. Nick's
relieved. Tess acts offended, asking if it would be so tragic if we had
been together?  Nick says only if I didn't remember it.  The bell rings;
it's Bernardo, coming to get some clinic supplies for Angie that were
delivered to Tess by mistake. Nick says he's "between apartments"
right now, and has some stuff... Tess says he can leave anything he
wants in her place. Nick says she's a class act. Tess answers the
door; Buck is with Bernardo, bearing breakfast (Eggs Benedict... do all
these people from Corinth eat free, I wonder?). Buck says he couldn't
help noticing she ordered breakfast for two. Nick leans over the rail,
asks Tess if she remembers where he put his stuff, and says good a.m.
to Buck. Buck says she didn't waste much time adding that notch to her
bedpost. Tess says that's what bedposts are for.

Bernardo, pulling the medical supplies, runs into Azure as she's getting
off the elevator. She asks if he's "supering" or "facilitating?" They
chat awkwardly, then agree to see each other around.  Azure walks off;
Bernardo is mad at himself for blowing it.

Tess is on the phone, trying to find out when they'll know if Azure got
booked for the Mystique campaign. Apparently it's between her and one
other girl. Buck comes to say goodbye. Tess tells him to pray for them,
because if they get the Mystique campaign, it'll put the agency on the
map. Buck says he'll put in a good word. Tess says to put in a good
word for me, too, for all the notches on my bedpost. Buck apologizes,
but says he doesn't trust Nick. Nick, coming down the stairs, says he
can't blame Buck. Nick thanks Tess for the use of some space, and asks
Buck how his bloody marys are. Buck says not free. Nick says as long
as they burn.

Bernardo brings Kayla to the agency, and shows her around. Kayla says
Azure is pretty. Danny comes in and tells Ally that Alex is in the bar
with Tony. Ally sarcastically thanks him for the update. Danny
comments that he wasn't in Florida very long. Ally says he's just
visiting. Seeing the sights, Danny says, like my sister. Ally tells
him Ava and Alex are married and in love, and he would never do that.
Danny apologizes, but Ally walks off.

Bernardo finishes showing Kayla around and asks her what she'd like
to see next. Kayla is staring at Azure. Bernardo asks if she'd like to
meet her. Kayla nods. Bernardo takes her over. Tess, gets a fax, and
starts squealing... apparently Azure got the Mystique account. Tess
introduces her as "the new face of Mystique." Tess is psyched. Azure
is shocked. Kayla wants to know what happened. Bernardo says it
looks like the pretty lady just became a star... and the facilitator
doesn't have a prayer.

The Bar
=======
Danny pursues Ally around the bar, asking if she's going to tell him.
Ally says she doesn't have anything to tell him. Danny says right,
Jocelyn and Alex slept in the same room and nothing happened? Ally
says they didn't sleep in the same room! Danny says maybe not to
begin with... the bartender (who's neither Buck nor Jacob, so I guess
they have an employee) takes their order, and asks if it's to stay or
go. Ally says "to go" and Danny says "to stay" in unison.

Alex and Tony are having breakfast, making small talk about what Buck
and Jacob have done with the bar. Tony says he doesn't think Alex came
to New York to talk about architecture. Alex says he came to see Ally
and everyone. Tony's skeptical... he wants to know what really happened
in Florida. Tony doesn't think things worked out. Alex says he wouldn't
say that at all. Tony asks then what would he say? Alex says he'd say
it was a total disaster.

Tony asks if Alex wants to talk about it? Alex says there's nothing to
talk about... they're probably going to get a divorce. Tony says that's
it? You want more? Alex asks. Tony says he looks like he needs to talk
about it. Alex asks if he's his shrink now? Tony says I'm your friend,
now do you want to tell me what happened in Florida or not? Absolutely
not, Alex says, and that's the sad part. He always thought he and Ava
had something that would always be there, but he went down to Florida,
and there was a wall that he couldn't break through. "Sad" is the only
word he can come up with. Tony asks about the kids. Alex says they're
in school now, doing well, and Ava's all excited about the new Burnell's,
and Alex just didn't fit in. Alex thinks Ava was relieved when he left,
so here he is in the city, trying to find out where he does fit in.

Tony tries to get Alex to shoot some pool with him; it might make him
feel better to knock a few balls around. Danny comes in, and brushes
past Alex. Alex says he wouldn't mind knocking him around. Alex asks
how Tony can stand living with Danny. Tony says Alex has no idea, he
hasn't seen all Danny's beauty aids yet. Alex gets serious, and tells
Tony he doesn't want Ally to know about him and Ava... every time she
thinks about Ava and Alex, it's like they're her Rock of Gibraltar. She
has a lot on her plate, and Alex doesn't want to rock her world. Tony
says she's probably going to find out anyway, but he won't tell her.
Tony asks Alex if he wants to break. Alex says he's trying hard not to.
Tony tells him to look at the bright side, we all came to New York to
make a fresh start, and maybe Alex can too. Alex said they all came
to New York with a purpose; he came to New York because he had no
other place to go, he's all out of fresh starts. He's been there, done
that, and it's gotten him nowhere. Tony says it's gotten him to New
York, and Tony is happy about that. They talk about Tony getting his
P.I. license; he needs 3,000 hours of experience to get a license, but
he has a friend who's going to embellish the truth a bit, he'll take a
little test, then he's in business. Alex asks like Sam Spade? Tony
says yeah, and Alex can be that other one. Philip Marlowe, asks
Alex? Alex says he's a cop, not a P.I. Tony says he's the best de-
tective he ever met. Will he at least think about it? Alex agrees to.
Tony invites him to crash at his place (gee, Alex and Danny, won't
THAT be a party!).

[Musical montage of Alex going to his hotel to pick up his stuff, to
Natalie Merchant's new song "Carnival" which I hear about a billion
times a day.]

Buck gives Nick his bloody mary. Nick drinks it, winces, and says it's
lethal. Nick says he seems protective of Tess. Buck says she's an
old friend. Nick says if she's more than a friend, say so, not that it
would stop me, but he'd like to know. Buck says if he and Tess did
have a thing going, Nick would be the last person he'd be worried
about. Tess comes in to tell Buck about Azure, and how happy Tess
was when she got the fax. She orders four bottles of champagne and
says they're going to celebrate. Nick offers to carry them up for her.
Tess says Ally is on her way to help.

Alex comes back in with his bag. Tony goes to get them some beers.
Jocelyn and Sydney comes in. Sydney is asking Jocelyn if she wants
to get a table, or be really racy and sit at the bar, but Jocelyn isn't
listening... she's staring at Alex. Sydney asks if it's someone she
knows? In another life, says Jocelyn. Jocelyn excuses herself to
the powder room. Sydney sits at the bar and orders mimosas from
Buck. No hard feelings? Sydney asks. Buck says no, since she didn't
kick them out. Tess comes over and says there's no hard feelings here,
either. Just one big happy family, says Sydney. Jocelyn is on the
phone looking for a Jonathan Sherman. Ally comes in. Sydney notices
the champagne and asks where the party is. At the agency, says Tess,
one of my girls just landed an account. "That's right, it's catalog
season," says Sydney. :-) Tess says actually it's Mystique, a national
campaign, there'll be TV, video, print. She invites Sydney to come join
them, then thanks Nick for "last night." She says he can keep his stuff
there anytime, and gives him a kiss in front of Sydney. Sydney says
he always was a fast worker. Time is money, says Nick. "Not in your
case," says Sydney, then apologizes for the cheap shot. Nick says she's
never cheap... maybe a little down and dirty, but never cheap. Sydney
thanks him sarcastically. Nick says he calls them as he sees them. Nick
says she doesn't have to show him to the elevator this time... he's
getting to know his way around. He kisses her, and leaves.
