LOVING Update for Thursday, November 9, 1995
(Second-to-last "Loving" update ever!!!)

The Big Goodbye
I. Steffi and Deborah say goodbye
II. Tony and Charles say goodbye
III. Jacob and Angie say... hello!

I.
Deborah's bought a bunch of clothes, including stuff for the baby. Steffi
says she has to stop buying clothes, or she's going to go through her 10
million by the weekend. Steffi wonders how she's gonna carry all the
stuff Deborah bought. Deborah says rich people don't carry their own
things, they hire people to carry for them. Steffi says Deborah is the
rich one, not her. Deborah says everything that's hers is Steffi's...
eventually. Deborah says Steffi will never want for money again. Steffi
asks if she wants her to be the spoiled little rich girl, and Deborah says
of course, but she knows Steffi is too hard-working and level-headed for
that. Steffi jokes that she got all that from Deborah. Deborah asks how
she and Tony are; Steffi says "there is no more me and Anthony."

Deborah says of course there's a you and Anthony! Steffi tries to change
the subject, but Deborah insists Steffi tell her how she feels about him.
Steffi says she thinks he's "thrifty, brave, clean and reverent." Deb
tells her to stop joking. Steffi says it's their last day together, can't
they spend it in peace? Deborah want Steffi to talk about her feelings,
but Steffi says there's nothing to talk about. Okay, Deborah says, and
starts babbling on about the clothes and babies. All right, Steffi says,
let's talk. Steffi says she knows Deborah likes him. Deborah says the
point isn't whether *I* like him. "Right," Steffi says. Deborah starts
cutting him down, saying she never thought he'd make much of a husband
for Steffi, since he doesn't have a dime. Steffi defends him, saying he's
gainfully employed. Deborah disputes the "gainfully" part, and makes a
comment about his family. Steffi sees through her plan, and asks whose
side she's on? Deb says she's on Steffi's side. Steffi says, so you want
me to marry into a gangster family with a pauper as a husband? Deb
says he's obviously not cut from the same cloth as his family, and that
Steffi will never have to worry about money again. Steffi says "I see,
marry your poor cop and Momma will pay the bills." Deb turns serious,
and says Momma can finally do something for you, which I've never been
able to do before. She wants Steffi to know that she can be and have
anything she wants. Steffi says there are some things that money can't
buy. "Such as?" Deb asks. "Tony," says Steffi, "he doesn't want me
anymore."

Deborah says of course Anthony wants her... Deb was there when he
asked to court Steffi. Steffi says she wasn't there when he said he
wasn't going to come to New York with her. Deborah says well maybe
not right away. Steffi says he *says* he has some work to finish up
with Alex... does this sound familiar at all? Deborah says she knows
Tony, and he'll be there. Steffi says or he'll never show up at all, and
she doesn't want to go down that road again. The last person who did
this to her said he wouldn't be long, and he never showed up again except
to say nice knowing you. Deb says she knows Tony... he may not have
any money, speak the King's English, or know which fork to use, but he's
never going to do to Steffi what Cooper did. Steffi says as far as she's
concerned, all men are guilty until proven innocent. Deborah says she
hates to see someone so young sound so cynical. Steffi says she's earn-
ed it. "You really care about him, don't you," Deborah asks. "Yeah,"
Steffi says. Deborah asks if she loves him. Steffi doesn't know... it's
been really wonderful, and he's protective and caring, and he would give
his life for her. Steffi guesses that's a kind of love. Deborah says a
pretty solid kind of love. A lot of good that's going to do me a thousand
miles away, Steffi says [1,000 miles? Where the heck in Pennsylvania
do they live?] Deborah says it will all work out... she can see the way
Tony looks at her. Deborah says she's going to miss Steffi, and hugs
her. She says she'll be there when the baby's born, and she'll stay 3 or
4 extra weeks. Steffi says don't hold me to this, but I love you. Deb
loves Steffi, too, and she will hold her to it. Deborah suddenly remem-
bers they have to watch HotLine, they're doing a whole thing on the
murders. Steffi says she's heard enough about that, but Deb says she
has to watch, they interviewed her. They show the opening credits of
HotLine. Steffi and Deborah watch the interview. When they get to the
part where Tony says Gwyn died by her own hand, Steffi looks sort of
uncomfortable.

Deborah shuts off the TV, mad that her interview got cut. Steffi says
buy the station and fire them all. Deborah entertains that idea for a
minute, but realizes that something is wrong with Steffi. Steffi says
she hates for Gwyn to be remembered like that, like some kind of...
I don't know. Deborah says you loved her very much, didn't you. Yeah,
Steffi says. "The mother you never had?" asks Deborah. She knows
she's never been mother of the year. Steffi says nobody's perfect.
Deborah says that's putting it kindly. Steffi doesn't want to have
another mother-bashing session, but Deb says she's not afraid to
discuss the bad things that have happened between them, because it
makes her realize how far they've come. Steffi says there were
times she didn't think they'd get out alive. [Flashbacks to fights bet-
ween them, and to Deborah's heart attack] Deb says she almost didn't
get out alive. Steffi says she's sorry it took a heart attack for her
to realize how much she loved her, and how many good things she's
gotten from Deborah, like determination, the ability to start over no
matter what. Steffi hopes she can pass that on to her child. They hug
and cry some more. Deb says she wants Steffi to know how much she
helped when Deborah was in the hospital... she kind of liked being cared
for by Steffi, even if she was a bit bossy. Deborah didn't have that from
her mother, and she guesses she didn't give it to Steffi either. Steffi
says she's more than making up for it now. With things? Deborah asks.
Steffi says there's a lot of love in every single one of these things, don't
think I don't know that. Deborah says there is. She knows she has a lot
of faults, and a lot of fears, but when she looks at Steffi, she thinks
somehow she did something so right. Hugging, sobbing...

II.
Charles is blowing off some press guy on the phone... he says Officer
Saleido already made a statement, which was one too many. Tony is
pacing around. Charles asks if he wants to talk, or does he just want
to get some exercise? Tony says he wants to talk about his future.
"Have you ever been in love?" Tony asks.

"You about to declare your love for me? If so, remember, I'm armed,"
Charles says to Tony. Tony says he's just a little nervous. Charles
asks if he has to guess? Tony says he's going to tell him. "In this
decade?" Charles asks. Tony says Charles has been real good to him.
"Back to this," Charles says, "look, I love you too, Tony." Tony asks
if he wants to hear this or not? Charles doesn't know. Tony says he
knows Charles put his neck on the line hiring Tony, because of Tony's
family. Tony also realizes that Charles has a lot on his mind right now,
and Tony doesn't want to burden him with more, but he wants to go
back to New York. "That's it?" Charles asks, "you didn't have to make
an opera out of it." Charles says he deserves some time off. Tony
doesn't respond. Charles gets wary, and asks how much time they're
talking about. "Maybe the rest of my life," Tony says, "I don't want a
vacation, I want to quit the force." Charles doesn't look pleased.

Charles says he can't oblige Tony, he's staying right here. Charles
says he could have been thrown off the force, and this is how he thanks
him? Tony says he knows, and that's why it was so hard to tell him,
and he feels lousy, but he's gotta do it. Charles says with Alex gone,
he's shorthanded. Tony says he'll come back, testify in the Alden case,
whatever. Charles says he wants him here full-time, but he can't force
him to stay. Charles asks "what the hell is the big deal about New York
all of a sudden?" [:-)] Tony says Stephanie is in New York. Charles
says he's as romantic as the next guy, but he has a police station to run.
One of the cops tells Tony that he's on TV, and his HotLine interview
comes on. Charles watches it for a bit, then says he can't take any of
this anymore... if anyone needs him, he'll be back at the hotel. They
watch the rest of the interview.

Richard wraps up the interview with questions about what drove Gwyn
to kill 6 people she loves, and says she'll take that answer to the grave,
along with many other unanswered questions. He mentions theories,
about why Gwyn wore the long dark wig... her daughter Trisha had long
dark hair, and one psychologist suggested that she tried to become her
daughter because of all the pain Trisha gave her, inflicting pain rather
than experiencing it herself. "Fact, or psychobabble? We'll probably
never know the answer, but the fact is, peace has returned to Corinth,
for the moment, that is. Join us next week, when we'll be broadcasting
again from New York City... hardly the mecca of peace, but we promise
you it won't be dull." The cops rib Tony and call him a star. Tony says
no, I'm an idiot.

Charles gets back to his hotel room, and the light for his voice-mail is
blinking. He plays it, and hears Lorraine's message from yesterday
apologizing for her behavior. He also hears the entire conversation
between Lorraine and Jacob, with Lorraine saying she has loved Charles
for 20 years, and always will, and Jacob saying he loves Angie, but
that Charles and Angie are back together, and Lorraine saying she'll
love Charles until she dies. Charles is pensive.

III.
Jacob is at his apartment packing. He looks at the picture of Angie in
hix box of mementos, and closes the box.  There's a knock on the door;
it's Angie. She asks if it's moving day, and Jacob says tomorrow. She
says it's smart to pack in advance. He says it's one of the few smart
things he's done lately. Angie says if you wait till the last minute, you
always forget something. Jacob says there's not much to forget here.
Angie says she knows he travels light. Jacob asks what she's doing
there. Angie asks "can't an old friend say goodbye?" [Angie, for once,
isn't weeping and sobbing]

Jacob thought they said goodbye yesterday. Angie, almost playfully,
says that was hardly a goodbye. Jacob says he said all that he had to
say. Angie says well she has a topic for discussion, if he can spare a
moment or two. Jacob says it's not a good idea to draw it out, it's
painful enough for both of them. Angie says she thinks they can have
an un-painful couple of minutes. Jacob says he's going to New York,
and she's staying here with Charles... he hopes she knows he wishes
her the best. Angie wishes the same for him. Jacob says shouldn't
we just leave it there? Angie says she knows all his plans, but he
doesn't know any of hers. Jacob says this hurts. He has a lot of things
to do before he leaves tomorrow. Angie asks if he isn't just a little bit
curious about what she's going to do with the rest of her life?

Jacob reluctantly asks Angie what her plans are. Angie says for one
thing, she's leaving the hospital. Private practice, Jacob asks? No,
very public, Angie answers, she's opening a clinic. A clinic? Jacob
asks? Angie says it's something she's always dreamed of... she told
him about it, didn't she? Yeah, Jacob says, you mentioned it. Angie
says she got a really good deal. Jacob unenthusiastically tells her he's
happy for her, and goes back to packing. Jacob asks if that's it? Angie
says that's it for her professional plans, but on a personal level...
Jacob says he's sure all of that's going to work out. Angie says will
you... "LISTEN TO ME," Jacob says, "I cannot take this, I really can't
take this." He asks her to please leave.

"WHY are you doing this?" yells Jacob. Angie asks doesn't he want the
address of her clinic? [She's pushing him, bigtime!] Jacob says they
have clinics in New York. Angie says he might want to write. Jacob
says he doesn't think he needs a pen pal. Angie says just take it anyway.
Jacob takes the paper and stuffs it in his pocket without looking at it.
Angie protests... "don't make me have to smack you, Jacob, now LOOK
at it." Jacob is upset, but looks at it, and says "Green Street?" Angie
says "that's with an E at the end." Jacob says this is my address.
"Really? What a coincidence," Angie says, "hey neighbor." Jacob asks
what about Charles? Angie says he talks too much. Jacob clues in, shuts
the apartment door, and throws her on the bed, where they start making
out and laughing...

Curbhanger...
