LOVING: Update for Thursday, November 2, 1995
(my second-to-last LOVING update - then it will be CITY update)

It's relationship-to-be day in Corinth, with your favorite couples:
I. Jocelyn and Alex
II. Angie and Jacob
III. Lorraine and Charles

I.
Jocelyn and Alex are walking along in the park. Jocelyn asks Alex
what his favorite season is, autumn or spring? She says everyone
likes one of them best, except for a few people who like winter. Alex
says he must be a real loser, because he likes summer... but it's gone.
Jocelyn asks if he's going to tell her why he dragged her out of the
Rodeo Bar. Alex teases that he thought it was a bit early in the day
for her to be hitting the sauce. Jocelyn says she was there to have
breakfast... pancakes, actually. Alex says that's a likely story.
Jocelyn says he's evading her question. Alex says he wondered how
that movie ended. Jocelyn is confused. Alex reminds her of the tear-
jerker they got kicked out of, doesn't she remember? Jocelyn asks
if he's sure he wants to know? He does. They sit on a bench.
Jocelyn says picture a sunset...

So, she says, Robert Taylor and Vivian Leigh meet each other on this
bridge, the music swells, they rush into each others' arms, and live
happily ever after. Alex says THAT's how it ends? How many times
have you seen this movie? Jocelyn says about 20, it's her favorite
movie. Alex says that's kind of a corny ending, isn't it? Jocelyn
says no, she thinks it's sweet. How would he end it? Alex says he'd
have Vivian jump off the bridge, and have Robert live unhappily ever
after. [Which, I guess, is the real ending] Jocelyn says she thought
he'd never seen it. He says he hasn't, but he knows the story. Jocelyn
asks then why did he ask her to tell it? Alex says he just wanted to hear
her tell it. Why did she change it? Alex asks. Jocelyn says he looks like
he could use a happy ending. Alex asks if she could see that on his face?
Jocelyn says she heard about him and Ava, she's sorry. Alex says it
wasn't her fault. Jocelyn asks if he's sure about that. Alex says he's
sure... there was just one fight too many. Jocelyn asks if it's possible
to patch things up? Alex says maybe, he doesn't know. Jocelyn asks
what if it's not fixable? Alex says then he'll just have to get on with
his life. She asks if that's what they're doing there? Alex says he
just needed to talk. Just talk? Jocelyn asks.

Just talk, Alex says, why, did you have something in mind? Jocelyn
says she's just trying to figure out where he's at. Alex says he's at a
park with a very beautiful woman. Jocelyn thanks him for the comp-
liment. And? She asks. Alex says and, if I go any further out on this
limb, I'm gonna fall out of the tree. Jocelyn says she didn't mean to
put him on the spot. Alex says yes she did. She agrees. Alex asks,
if I were to do more than just talk, what would that make me? Human,
she says. Alex says he's been called worse. Jocelyn says he's been
through a horrible ordeal, his wife left, the murders... it's only normal
that he'd want some "comfort." She asks if he's spoken to Ava. He
hasn't, but he's spoken to the kids a couple of times. Jocelyn says
that's gotta be harsh. He says yeah, they want to know what's going
on, and he's not even sure he knows what's going on. Jocelyn says
so you guys haven't really decided anything? Alex says they've
decided not to decide... every time they talk to each other, they wind
up in a big screaming match. Jocelyn says that sounds like her divorce.
She apologizes quickly, saying she didn't meant to imply that he was
getting divorced. He says it's okay, but when he hears that word he
gets kind of scared, because it's pretty close to the truth. Jocelyn
asks if she can do anything? Alex says know any good lawyers?
Jocelyn says she thinks she can "turn him on" to one. Alex says
she already has. Jocelyn laughs and tells him he just totally fell out
of the tree. Am I all right? Alex asks. Jocelyn says yeah, he's okay.
Just okay? He asks? Jocelyn asks what he wants her to say to that?
Alex says now you want me to put it into words? Jocelyn gets more
serious. She says she thinks he knows how she feels about him, but
she can't... Alex says no, he's not asking her to. Jocelyn says he's
not? Not yet, he says. Funny, Jocelyn says, suddenly I feel incred-
ibly disappointed. Alex looks questioningly at her.

Alex says he didn't mean to disappoint her. Jocelyn says he was kind
of in a no-win situation; on the one hand, she thinks there's definitely
something here... Alex asks if she can be a bit more specific? Jocelyn
tells him he's mean. Alex says that's why they get along so well. She
was saying? Jocelyn says they definitely have a certain... chemistry.
Alex says he can work with that. But, she says... she likes being with
him, talking with him, looking at him, but... Big but, he says. Jocelyn
says when her marriage broke up, she did a lot of things that weren't
very smart. Been there, done that, Alex says, but that doesn't mean
you stop trying. You don't even know if you're getting divorced yet,
she says. He says they're just talking hypothetical, right? [Yeah,
that's it, hypothetical... oh sorry.] Right, she says. Hypothetically,
he says, if things were different, the situation, the timing, but it
was the same person... if... Jocelyn says she doesn't let herself think
about that. But if you did, he asks, what do you think you would do?
Jocelyn says she doesn't know. Alex asks what she thinks she would
do? She thinks she has to go, before one of them does something stupid.
He thinks she's right. She tells him to go home and get some sleep. He
says thanks for the talk, we'll have to do this again sometime soon.
That's what I like, she says, a solid commitment. She walks away.
Alex looks like he wants to go after her, but thinks better of it and
sits back down on the bench.

II.
Angie, at the hospital, hears a lot of clattering and banging. She
cruises down the hall to see what it is. In the children's ward,
Jacob is playing with the kids, and they're banging on bedpans,
and anything they can make noise with. Jacob and Angie smile
at each other.

Jacob and the kids are banging and singing "Old MacDonald" very
loudly and off-key. Angie applauds when they're done. Jacob
introduces Angie to the kids, and they all clap. Jacob teases that
she's there to give them all flu shots. Angie says she sees they're
having a "little jam session." Jacob says it's their final farewell
concert, would she care to join them? Farewell concert? Angie
asks. A little girl tells her Jacob is moving to New York and opening
a nightclub there. Another little girl says that when they grow up,
they all get to play there, right? You got it, says Jacob. He tells
them to take five, and they'll play another song in a bit. The kids
disperse. Angie asks Jacob when he's leaving. He says that depends
on her... if she wants him to stay around, say the word. Angie says
she can't ask him to do that, it's probably for the best; she has a lot
of thinking to do. Jacob asks then why does she look so miserable.
Angie says because she's a responsible adult. Jacob says he's a
broken record: "Come with me Angie, come with me Angie, you
know it's what you want." Angie reminds him she's still married...
she has to think about Charles and Frank. Jacob says Frank is 18.
Angie says that doesn't mean she can stop being a role model, she
has to do what's right. Jacob says what's right is them together.
He'll wait till she realizes that. Angie says she doesn't want him
to wait for her. Jacob says in this case, he doesn't give a damn
what she wants... he'll be waiting.

Angie says she's serious, she doesn't want him to wait. Jacob says
it doesn't get any better than what they have... what they feel for
each other, they'll never find again. Angie doesn't know what to do.
Jacob apologizes for pressuring her, he's trying like hell to give her
space, but it's so hard to walk away. Angie says if she doesn't do
right by Charles, it won't work; they can't build happiness on
someone else's pain. One of the little girls comes up and asks Jacob
if he's ready to jam? He tells her to go get the band together. Angie
says they're so cute. Jacob says he never thought he'd say this, but
he's gonna miss this place; she, of all people, knows how he feels
about hospitals. Angie says his band is waiting. Jacob says they're
not the only ones.

The kids are banging away again. Jacob says they're all brilliant.
He asks Angie what she thinks? Angie says a couple more years and
they'll be ready for Carnegie Hall. Jacob says he's going to miss them.
Angie says she'll miss him. Jacob says he guesses he'd better be going.
Angie says she supposes... Jacob says she just HAS to be the respon-
sible one. Angie says she wishes she weren't. Jacob says not half as
much as him. He just wants to grab her up and run away from every-
thing and everyone that wants to keep them apart. Angie says he's
not making this any easier. He says he tries. Angie tells him again
that it won't work if she leaves without resolving things. Jacob
says I love you, you love me, what's to resolve? Angie says she
thought he wasn't going to push. He apologizes, but says he's just
used to getting what he wants, and he can't stand being this helpless
while what he wants so much, so bad, is here and all he can do is
dream about it, and he's going crazy. Angie apologizes. He says he'll
give her time... remember that he loves her. He goes back to the kids.
Angie cries. [Is anyone else sick of Angie's suffering martyr routine?
She hasn't done a scene that didn't end with her sobbing since I can't
even remember when.]

III.
Charles is banging on Lorraine's door, yelling for her to open up,
asking if she's okay. Lorraine opens the door in a slinky dress. She
asks if anyone ever told him he's a hard man to get ahold of? Charles
puts on his "confused" look.

Charles asks if she's okay. Lorraine says she's fine... does she look
okay? Charles said he got a message that she called him at the
station and it was an emergency. Lorraine says they must have
misunderstood; she said she needed to see him, but she didn't mean
to imply that it was an emergency. Charles says "so, you're okay?"
[Duh] Lorraine says "I'm fine... we just did that, Charles." Charles
asks why she wanted to see him? Lorraine says she thought he might
need a homemade breakfast after last night. Charles asks how she
heard about that. Lorraine says it's all over the front page. But at
least it's over now, she says; she never would have guessed it was
Mrs. Alden. No, Charles says. Lorraine says he's mad at her. Charles
says he's not mad, he was worried about her, they told him it was an
emergency. Lorraine says they must have realized how much she
needed to see him. Why? He asks. Because I miss you, Lorraine
says. Charles asks what's going on here? Lorraine says that depends.
Charles asks on what? Lorraine says on what you want to go on here.
Lorraine starts kissing him. Charles breaks away. Lorraine starts
crying and apologizing... she thought that because of Angie and
Jacob... I'm sorry, I've blown this. She starts to run away, but
Charles grabs her and asks what she knows about that.

Lorraine, who is pretty much going hysterical, begs him to go.
Charles asks if Jacob said something, but Lorraine says he didn't.
He keeps trying to get her to sit down and talk to him, but Lorraine
says she's so humiliated, acting like a lovesick schoolgirl trying to
hang on to the past. She knows she has feelings for him that he can't
return. He keeps saying it's okay, let's talk, but she's pretty much
lost it, and grabs her purse and bolts.

Lorraine is at a bar slamming back the booze. She asks for another.
He says isn't it a little early? She says it might be early for him,
but for her it's been a very long day. He asks if she's sure she doesn't
want any breakfast? Lorraine gets testy, and says if he doesn't want
a customer, he shouldn't open the bar. He asks if she wants anything
else. Peace and quiet? She says. He gets the hint, and goes back to
work. Charles walks by the window and sees her. He comes into the
bar. She tries to leave, but stumbles. He tells her to sit down, they
need to talk. She wants him to leave her alone. Why'd you take off
like that? Charles asks. Lorraine says he's a detective, can't he
figure it out? He grabs her and says she's not going anywhere this
time. He wants to help her. She says he's NOT helping. The bartender
asks if everything's okay. Charles says they're fine... Lorraine says
she'll be fine when he leaves. The bartender asks him to leave, but
Charles flashes his badge and says it's police business. The bartender
makes himself scarce. Lorraine pleads with him to leave her alone.
Charles says no, come with me. Lorraine sobs that she doesn't want
him to see her like this. Charles wants to take her home. She says
no, so he slings her over his shoulder and carries her out, with her
screaming "let me live my life, dammit!"

Sidewalk-crack-hanger...
