LOVING Update for Friday, November 11:

STORYLINE: ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER PRISONER
           (starting location: warehouse)
* We see a sign: CAUTION: HAZARDOUS AREA. We pull back from that sign
and see Ava, still chained. She is laying on some crates. She gets
up and calls out for Jeremy. She walks over to him. (Jeremy is either
sleeping or feigning sleep.) Gilbert enters and sincerely apologizes
for the bed. He says he'll try to accommodate her. She says he could
do that by letting her go. He ignores that and tells her he brought
breakfast. "Just like the Ritz." She reaches into the bag and pulls
out..."A toothbrush?" "I try to please." He shows her a bottle of
water. Gilbert says he brought it for Jeremy, if he hasn't already
starved himself to death. Ava says he will, if Gilbert doesn't let
them go. Gilbert ignores that, too, saying he'll be back later, and
asking if she needs anything else. "Yeah. [She holds up her hand.]
The key." "Sorry. _Bon appetit._" When Gilbert gets to the door, Ava
calls to him, stopping him. "All those months we spent together...I
couldn't have been wrong about you, could I?"
* [Alex at the police station; Kate at home.]
"She didn't come home last night, Kate." Alex tells Kate about Cabot
offering to buy Jeremy out. He says he isn't bothered that she hasn't
called him, but to avoid the kids? Kate says maybe she just wanted to
get away from Burnell's, so she checked into a hotel and hasn't woken
up yet. Alex says he'd call every hotel/motel in town if he had time,
but he doesn't. Kate asks how Clay is ("not good") and asks Alex to
give her regards to Cabot and Isabelle. Kate says she'll find Ava for
him, but Alex tells her not to bother. Kate says everything is going
to be fine. They hang up. Alex sighs and slams a door. He pulls a
photo of Ava and the kids out of his wallet. After staring at that
for a minute, he gets his resolve back and goes back in to see Cooper.
* [Alex at the police station; Kate at home.]
Kate is telling Alex that Ava didn't show up for work; she didn't even
call. "God, Kate. I don't like this at all." Alex realizes there's
one person who will know where she is. Kate says she tried Jeremy; he
isn't home or at the office. "Oh, what a coincidence!" Kate tells him
not to jump to conclusions. "Let's not stick our heads into the sand,
either." Kate says that Ava would never run off with Jeremy, no matter
how angry she was. Alex says he's not so sure of that any more.
[At the warehouse.]
G: "You never knew me. When you looked at me, you saw Jeremy."
A: "I saw Jeremy, but it was you I got to know."
G: "I was playing a part."
A: "Come on, you're not that good."
Ava and Gilbert walk toward each other.
G: "I'm *pretty* good."
A: "You mean, all that time we spent together, we laughed and worked,
 was all an act?"
G: "We did have some fun, didn't we?"
A: "You made me believe in myself. You made me feel confident.
Burnell's would never have made it without you."
G: "It wasn't me. It was Jeremy's money."
A: "I'm not talking about money, I'm talking about inspiration."
Jeremy stirs...
A: "You always knew what to say, how to make me feel..."
G: "Feel? What?"
A: "Powerful. Important. Confident. You're quite an actor, Gilbert."
Gilbert walks away.
G: "You'd better eat your breakfast. It's going to get cold."
A: "Remember that night out on the balcony?"
G: "Yeah."
A: "Yeah, because that was your greatest performance of all. You acted
like a scared little boy, trembling, and all I wanted to do was reach
out and hold you, and make all your fears go away."
G: "You did."
A: "Many times, I felt very close to you."
Gilbert turns around and walks back toward Ava.
G: "Me, too."
A: "But then again, what do I know about you? Nothing, right?"
She sits down. Shortly, he does, too.
G: "I tried to tell you things. Real things."
A: "You did?"
G: "Yeah. That day at Burnell's? The Christmas tree with the angels?"
A: "I thought you said you hated Christmas."
G: "Yes, I did, because --"
Jeremy is awake and looking at them. They don't see him yet.
A: "Because you have no love, no family. All of that was true."
G: "You gave me my first Christmas ever that day."
A: "So it wasn't all an act."
G: "What do you think?"
A: "I think you should let us go."
Gilbert sees Jeremy looking at him. He goes to Jeremy. He starts to
hit him, then stops himself. Very emotionally, Gilbert says, "You were
*this* close." Ava backs away, scared.
* G: "*This* close."
A: "Gilbert?"
G: "Just shut the hell up."
Jeremy jumps up and grabs Gilbert. Gilbert makes quick work of him,
though, in his weakened state. Ava grabs a piece of pipe (?) and tries
to attack Gilbert with it. He grabs it and twists her arm. She says
he is hurting him. "Good! Now you know what it feels like." He lets
 her go.
A: "You can't keep us in here forever."
G: "No? Why not."
A: "Because Alex will come looking for me. And when he does, he will
bring the entire Corinth police force with him."
J: "She has a point."
G: "I have already thought about that."
A: "You have?"
G: "Yes, I have. And to be sure that we won't be interrupted again,
you will write your husband a letter right now."
He grabs her. She resists, and he forces her to the ground. He gets
a piece of paper and a pen and rests them on a crate. Gilbert is
 almost screaming now:
G: "Now write a simple letter: 'Dear Alex, Dearest Alex, I needed time
away from you to sort out my feelings. So I decided to go away.' That
shouldn't be too hard. Now *do it*."
Ava throws the paper and pen and says, "I won't."
G: "I think you will."
A: "No, I won't. And there's nothing you can do to make me."
G: "Wanna bet?"

STORYLINE: MOMMIE DEAREST
           (location: hospital)
* Deborah is trying to get answers out of the nurse. She won't answer
and suggests that she go talk to his doctor. She leaves. Stephanie,
in sunglasses, enters and tells Deborah that she looks like hell.
Deborah says she is concerned. Stephanie points out that she wasn't
concerned enough to look for her last night. Deborah says she tried,
but then she came to the Hospital. "Clay could die." "So?" Stephy
asks which she is more scared of: that he will die, or that he won't?
* "You can't believe that I want Clay to die." Stephanie tells Deborah
that she doesn't need Clay any more: she has Cooper now. "I don't have
Cooper; I don't want Cooper -- this is a setup for us!" "I *saw* you."
Deborah says she hates Clay for that. "If I could get rid of him, I
would, but I can't. It's sick, isn't it? You stick by a man that you
hate and then you wind up hating yourself even more because you can't
stop loving him?" Stephanie completes the thought: that if you keep
loving him, he will maybe love you back someday and the pain will go
away. Deborah says she didn't think Stephy would understand that.
Stephy asks why she would come down and see her then. "Because I'm
your mother." Yeah, says Stephanie, and you always hurt me and I keep
coming back for more. "You know, the only reason you wanted Cooper is
because I had him. That's the only reason. It's like there's a finite
amount of happiness in the world, and if I get some of it, you want to
take it back." "Honey, you're wrong." "Am I? You took Cooper."
"Nothing happened! Cooper loves you." "I don't want to hear it."
Stephanie storms out. Deborah follows and grabs her jacket. "You
are going to listen to me! Clay set this whole thing up. He doctored
those photographs, he locked Cooper and me in the Carriage House --"
"How am I supposed to believe one thing that comes out of your mouth?"
"Because -- you were the one that warned me about Clay. You told me
that he would use me, and he has. He's used me to get to you. So hate
*him*, blame *him*, but not Cooper and not me!" "Believe me, mom, I
*do* hate Clay for what he's done. But hating Clay is like killing
the messenger -- or running him down."
* "You can't believe I would try to take Cooper away from you." "You
can't be serious. I had a date once with Clay. I was stood up. You
know why? Because he was marrying you." Deborah says she was trying
to protect her. She thought they were past that and they were friends
now. "Friends?" Stephanie says she can't believe she almost fell into
that trap again. "It wasn't a trap, Stephanie." "What was it, then?"
"Fine. You don't have to believe me. Don't you trust Cooper?" "No,
I don't trust Cooper. Stephanie turns and walks back into the waiting
room; Deborah follows. "Would you just be realistic about this? Why
would he want me when he has you? Why would he have an affair with
*me*?" "This is very good. Self deprecation. [Stephanie applauds
sarcastically.] I love it. It's great." "Nothing happened."
"Nothing happened? I saw it!" "No, no. You saw photographs that
were doctored." "Forget the photographs, mom, I saw it with my own
eyes." "Whatever you saw that was not what was going on." Stephanie
gives up: "You know what? You win. You get Cooper. He's all yours.
Free and clear. Just take him. But you'd better hold on to him good
and tight, because I don't have anything left to take. You took it
all." Deborah says she's in the same situation: Clay took everything
from her. "See? You're doing it again, mom." "No, I'm talking about
you. You're my only child, and he is taking you away from me. I am
losing you." Stephanie considers that for a moment, and says, "That's
right. You are." Stephanie leaves. Deborah follows.

STORYLINE: WHODUNIT?
           (starting location: police station)
* Cooper is sitting with his lawyer. Alex says he has enough evidence
to arrest him. Cooper tells him to go ahead, he could use some sleep.
Alex says he's trying to help him, but his prints are *all over* that
car. "I can't answer on advice from my attorney." Alex asks what the
deal is -- he was answering questions before. The attorney pipes up
that they've been at it all night, and his client could use a break.
Alex agrees and tells Cooper to pour himself some coffee, because in
five minutes, he'll want some answers from him. Alex leaves.
The attorney asks Cooper why he told Alex that he had advised him not
to answer. Cooper says it sounded good. The attorney asks him to
level with him -- what happened? No answer. "Cooper, what is going on
here? Who are you trying to protect?"
* Cooper asks him how it looks. Not good: they've got motive, physical
evidence, and Cooper at the scene of the crime. He wants Cooper to
start talking. "I can't." "Why not? I can't help you if you don't
help yourself." Cooper is frustrated; he tells the attorney that he
has told the cops everything he knows. "You've told them nothing."
"Exactly." The attorney says that any first year law student could
tell that he knows more than he is saying. Cooper asks how long they
can keep him here. It depends on whether Alex decides to book him,
"and frankly, I'm surprised he hasn't already. I would have." The
attorney says that Detective Masters has given him every break he can.
Sometime, he's got to follow procedure. You mean I have to go to jail?
"Chances are." "Can't you do anything?" "I do law, not miracles."
Cooper kicks a chair and asks what he wants from him. "The *truth*:
did you run Clay down?" Cooper flashes back to Stephanie saying that
she wished Clay was dead when she saw those pictures. Cooper turns
around and apologizes, telling the attorney that he has his work cut
 out for him.
[After Alex calls Kate, he re-enters the interrogation room.]
"All right, Cooper." "Yeah? You going to bust me or what?" "Evidence
says you did it." "Fine." "But gut instinct says you didn't. Get out
of here." Cooper gets up to leave. Alex tells him not to go on any
long trips. "No way." The attorney says he wants to see him. Cooper
says he has to go see someone. He thanks him for being so helpful
(sneering at the camera after saying that) and leaves.
The attorney, packing up his briefcase, says, "It's been a long night."
Alex sighs. "It's only the beginning." They leave.
* None.
* [At the hospital.]
Alex enters and asks Detective Graham if there's anything new with Clay.
"Not yet." Pat (Graham) gives Alex a hard time about getting there
late. He says the all-nighters must be getting to him. Alex says
yes, that, and there is something else -- personal. A nurse enters and
tells them that Clay is out of recovery and they will be able to see
him soon. (Deborah is behind a nearby door and overhears this.) Pat
asks Alex why he let Cooper go -- they had enough to hold him. Alex
maintains that Cooper didn't do it. Pat knows that Cooper and Alex are
personal friends...then says he regrets saying that. Alex says Cooper
isn't their only suspect -- what about Deborah Brewster. She had both
the opportunity and the motive: Clay had set her up with the photos to
try to make her daughter think she had an affair with her boyfriend.
Pat says *that* is who he feels sorry for, and on her 21st birthday,
too! (Yes, Deborah is still listening.) "Those must have been some
snapshots. Her mother and her boyfriend gettin' it on." Alex warns
Pat to "question everything that Clay tells you or shows you." Pat
says maybe she did it and decided to get even. He asks if Alex let
Cooper go so he would flush out whoever did it. "Could be." "Risky."
"Well, you certainly gave him a long enough leash. Long enough that
maybe he'll hang himself with it." Pat leaves. Alex looks thoughtful.
[At the airport.]
Cooper is on a pay phone: "Yeah, well, I need the cash. I don't know,
you're the accountant, you figure it out. Yeah, look, I've gotta get
out of the country and I've gotta stay out. I don't know for how
long. Yeah, yeah, yeah, just do it." He slams down the phone.
[At the hospital.]
Deborah is also hanging up the pay phone in the waiting room. Stephy
enters. "Stephanie, I thought you'd gone." "I'm on my way out right
now." "Clay is out of recovery. He's in ICU." They leave.
[In ICU.]
Clay is barely conscious. A nurse tells him that there two detectives
there to ask him questions. Alex and Pat are there. Alex says he's
sorry, but he has to ask him some questions. We see that from Clay's
point of view, he can barely focus on them. Deborah enters the room.
"Did you see who was driving the car that hit you?" Stephanie enters
the room, then leaves. "You did see who it was, didn't you?" Clay
doesn't react (in fact, it looks like he falls asleep), but we get a
shot of Deborah, who looks *very* nervous...
