LOVING Update for Thursday, October 12, 1995

Conveniently enough, the same episode I did September 21, so I'm
just re-posting this with Lauren Marie-Taylor's comments added:

LMT: "It's me again, Lauren Marie-Taylor, and I'm back trying to
figure out who the Loving killer is. Watching these shows again has
really been helpful, I've picked up on a lot of new clues. Today's
episode features a huge clue that could be the key to solving the
whole thing."

Ava is in Jeremy's studio, frantically going through the photos that
Gwyn gave him to sculpt from. Jeremy walks in, and demands to
know what she's doing there (he sounds pretty ticked). Ava says
"I'm solving a murder."

Gwyn is looking at the photo fragments on the computer, and she tells
Alex that she's sorry, but there's nothing there that she recognizes.
Alex says they were taken somewhere in Maine, they know that.
Gwyn says that just because Trisha liked to take her vacations in
Maine doesn't mean that she had anything to do with. Alex says that's
not what he's getting at. Gwyn says of course it is; she's been around
the station 10 hours a day, does he think she hasn't noticed how he
operates? He leads people into saying what he needs them to say.
Alex says he wants to prove that Trisha is innocent just as much as
Gwyn does, but the best way to do that is to bring her in and question
her. Gwyn says Alex says that as if he thinks Gwyn knows where
she is. Alex says "if you did, would you tell me?"

Neal is looking at Gwyn's baby bracelet. He puts it, and a note, into
an envelope. Kate calls for him, and he sticks the envelope into his
pocket. She says she baked some muffins... then she notices a lot of
boxes. Kate wonders what's going on. Neal says he's moving out.
Kate looks distressed.

Charles shows up at the hospital to see Frankie.  Frankie's okay now;
the doctor says he had just a mild case of ptomaine poisoning.
Frankie says it wasn't so mild when it hit. Frankie says Charles
didn't have to come running over there. Charles jokes that a guy
goes off on his own, and look what happens. Frankie is not amused.
The doctor says he's a little dehydrated, but if Frankie promises
to get fluids, the doctor will release him. Charles asks the doctor
where Angie is, he couldn't find her. The doctor says she's probably
with another patient.

Meanwhile, Angie and Jacob are sucking major face in the supply
closet (which, incidentally, looks pretty funny in rewind). They
stop and look at each other. Jacob says he supposes now he should
be saying he's sorry, but he's not. Good, Angie says, because she's
not sorry either. Jacob gives her a questioning look.

OPENING CREDITS

LMT: "Does Gwyn think she's helping Trisha by being so defensive?
She's only making Trisha look more guilty."

Gwyn can't even believe that Alex is asking that; of course she would
tell him if Trisha had been in touch with her. Alex says he hopes so,
because if she's not involved in these murders, she could very well
become a victim; has Gwyn thought of that? She starts to protest,
but they are interrupted by Richard Wilson coming into the station
with a camera crew (well, a camera guy, anyway). Tony comes
over and tells them to put it in reverse and back out of there; but
Richard hands him his "passport" (a letter of permission from the
mayor to film them in action). Richard says they're going to do a
little cinema verite; the mayor knows there will be a lot of publicity
for Corinth's finest, and he just wants a positive spin on it for a
change. Alex says he doesn't care what the mayor says; if they
film any of the evidence and compromise the investigation, Alex will
shut them down so fast it will make their heads spin. Tony agrees
for emphasis. Richard remarks to his camera guy that it looks like
there's some ripe fruit about to fall from the trees. He doesn't look
particularly pleased.

Kate asks if Neal's moving has anything to do with the police quest-
ioning him. He says it's the accusations, the looks he gets; once he
got out of prison, he thought the pain and humiliation was behind him,
but he was wrong. Kate commiserates with him. Neal says that
they're not only digging it up again, they think he's a homicidal
maniac. "Do I look like a serial killer?" Neal asks Kate. Kate says
Neal looks like the dear, sweet man he is, but he must know the
police are just doing their job. Once they catch the serial killer,
things will go back to normal. Neal says normal was what he wanted
when he came back to Corinth in the first place; to try to have a
normal life and find some peace in a place that held fond memories.
But it's all ruined now. Kate says she's sorry. Neal says she's the
last person who owes him an apology. The way she took him in,
and gave him warmth and kindness; there's no way Neal is going to
get her involved. Kate says if that's the reason he's leaving, he
can unpack right now, because she's stood her ground in this town
for a lot of years, and no one is going to tell her who she can and
can't associate with. Neal says he doesn't want her family to get
hurt by this. Kate says that he's an innocent man, and if there's
anything her family can do to bring this town to their senses, he
can count on them.

Ava tells Jeremy that Kate has a psycho living upstairs from her.
Jeremy asks how breaking into his studio is going to help solve the
murders, and rid Kate of unsavory boarders. Ava apologizes for
breaking in, but she's onto something. Ava shows Jeremy the
picture (it's a postcard, actually) that she lifted from Neal's room.
"Look familiar?" she asks. Jeremy says it looks like the one in
the police station. Exactly, Ava says, the photo fragments left
at the scene of each murder. Ava tells him to read the message
on the postcard. It reads:

To N.W.
Aren't they lovely?
P

"They," Ava says, meaning the kids on the front: Trisha and
Curtis Alden. Jeremy doesn't believe it. Ava says she has lived
in Corinth her whole life, she knows who they are. She points out
the postmark: 1975, Bangor, Maine. Jeremy asks where she got
it. Ava says from N.W. himself: Neal Warren. Ava says she's
had her suspicions about him since he moved in with Kate, so she
did a little checking. Jeremy says "you broke into his room? 2
break-ins in one day, that's a lot even for you." Ava says not to
treat her like a criminal. Jeremy says she's been busy. Ava
says she's made more progress than the Corinth Police. Jeremy
says that's because they have to worry about things like constitu-
tional rights. Ava says if she wants a lecture, she can talk to
Alex; what she needs is help. Jeremy says she seems to be doing
fine on her own. Does she know why Neal has this card? Ava says
no, but when she was there earlier, she saw a postcard just like that
one. Jeremy says that's impossible; all the stuff that was there
came from the Alden mansion, Gwyn gave it to him herself. Ava,
rifling the box, says she knows that. Jeremy is musing; he says
that what he doesn't understand is, if these two kids are Trisha and
Curtis when they were young, why doesn't Gwyn recognize them
in the picture? Ava says you'd think so, and that's the first question
she is going to ask Gwyn when she sees her. Ava finds the other
postcard. The message reads:

Dear Isabelle and Cabot,
Having the best time. Clay and Curtis love the fishing, Trisha loves
playing hearts, I love every minute.
Love, Gwyn

(The handwriting doesn't look the same to me; did anyone else
check?) Jeremy reads the postmark: 1975, Sleepy Hollow, Maine.
Ava asks if he's still going to give her a hard time? Maybe later,
Jeremy says, but right now they have to get to the police station
and find some answers.

Jacob says there are so many things he needs to say to her, so
many things he's been holding down, pretending... Angie interrupts
him, saying she's not sorry, but she thinks they're both under
strain from everything that's happened. Jacob tells her not to
try to explain away what just happened here. Angie says she's
not, it's just that she's still sorting through her feelings. Jacob
tells her that's her problem; she sees feelings like some sort of
medical chart, that she can just file away, but that's not the way
it works. You just have to let your feelings happen. Angie says
that's not the way she's made, even if she wants to be, but she
has to deal with things the way she knows how, and she doesn't
think that this is the time or the place. Jacob says maybe she's
right about the timing. "Tell you one thing," he says "this little
storage room's sure got the 411 on us, huh? All our truths
have come out in here." Angie says the problem is that they
don't live their lives in here. Their lives are on the other side
of the door. Jacob says it's a damn shame that they have to
live that lie out there. He says that's where the strain is coming
from, not the murders; they have nothing to do with them, the
serial killer probably doesn't even know that black people live
in Corinth. He goes to kiss her again, but Angie says "don't... I
can't go into this right now. What happened has to stay inside
these walls, at least for now." Jacob says could she repeat that
last part? Angie says she has to go, but she doesn't have to
forget, and that's all she can give him now. Jacob says he'll
give her time. Angie strokes his face.

Charles is talking to Frankie about how hard it has been on Angie
the way things are between them. Frankie says she understands.
Charles says that doesn't mean it's not affecting her, and he
wants to fix that. Frankie says some things can't be fixed.
Charles says he knows Frankie's still upset about things getting
messed up with Bree, but he has to know that that wasn't his
intent; he thinks of Frankie as a son, and nothing's going to
change that. Frankie says that's the problem. That's how Bree
sees them, and with Charles being Bree's father, it's...
complicated. Charles says he'll tell Frankie what he told Bree:
"I love you. If you need some space, to work things out, I'll
back off and give it to you. But no matter what happens, it's
not going to change the way I feel about you." Angie and
Jacob come up to the door. Angie looks rather shocked to
see Charles.

LMT: "One part of the mystery is solved. The kids in the
picture are Curtis and Trisha Alden. But why is the killer
ripping up their picture and leaving it at the murder sites?
And why is Neal hiding the same picture?"

Charles says he's been looking all over for Angie; he came as
soon as he heard about Frankie being sick. Angie ducks the
question of where she was, and asks Frankie how he's doing.
Frankie says he'll be fine as soon as he's out of there. Charles
asks Jacob if he's sick, too? Angie says Jacob is the one that
brought Frankie in. Charles thanks him. Jacob says it was no
problem. Jacob says if Frankie needs a ride back to Jacob's
place, he'll bring the car around and hook him up. Frankie
thanks him, but says that he was thinking about taking his
sorry butt home... that is, if Angie doesn't mind. Angie looks
pleased.

Kate brings in muffins and coffee to Neal's room. She says
she'd hoped to find him unpacking, rather than still packing.
Neal says he's sorry, and Kate is too. She feels like she's
bringing food to a wake. She offers him one for the road.
Neal says she's just trying to lure him back. Kate says a
good boarder is hard to find. Neal says that her believing
in him, when he hasn't given her any reason to, means a
lot. But, Kate says, not enough to make you stay. Neal
says close, but not quite. The open road is calling, Neal
says, new horizons and all that. Kate says well, when he
gets through with the open road, this will all have blown
over, and there will always be a room for him here. Neal
says that's kind of her. The phone rings; Kate says it's
probably Ava, she checks in every 10 minutes in case the
serial killer has dropped by. She goes to answer it. Neal
goes to look for the picture. He can't find it.

Alex and Tony are grousing about the camera crew. Alex
tells Tony to turn the monitor off. What was the mayor
thinking? Alex wonders. We have a tough enough job
without a camera looking over our shoulders. Alex yells
at the camera guy to get the camera off him. Tony says
the mayor's a politician, he probably has some P.R. guru
telling him to kiss up to the press so they're nice come
election time. Alex says if he wants to impress the press,
he should let them do their job. Ava and Jeremy blow in.
"All right detective, case closed," Ava says, slamming
the postcards down on his desk. Alex asks if she's nuts,
there's a camera crew in there. Ava says no, but he's nuts
if he doesn't look at the pictures and see what she just did for
him. Alex and Jeremy try to shut Ava up, while Tony goes
to deflect Richard and the camera guy. Tony says point that
camera somewhere else, or there'll be a little industrial
accident right there. Richard asks "are you threatening us,
Ton?" Tony says "don't 'Ton' me, Rich. Now, why don't
you go bother a meter maid or something?" Rich says he
thinks there are more exciting things expiring over there
than meters. Tony says he's warning Richard; "likewise,"
Richard says.
Meanwhile, Ava is telling Alex that she took the postcard
from Neal's bedroom and matched it with the one Gwyn sent
to Cabot and Isabelle. All 3 prints are from the same
photo, dating back to 1975. Alex is incredulous. Ava says
seeing is believing.  Ava says you know who you can't trust;
Neal and Gwyn. Gwyn hears this, and asks Ava what she's
talking about? Alex says "we're talking about photos, that
you don't seem to remember." He holds one up right in
Gwyn's face. "Refresh your memory?" Gwyn looks stricken.

LMT: "What made Gwyn believe she could actually get away
with pretending not to recognize this photo? I mean, somebody
was bound to figure it out sooner or later. I can't wait to hear
her explanation."

Gwyn says she didn't want anyone to know until the killer was
found. She was just trying to protect Trisha, surely Alex
can understand that. Tony tells Richard the show's over.
Richard says that looks like an opening curtain to him. Tony
says it's going to be curtains for them if they don't get out
of there. Richard says he doesn't think his honor the mayor
will take this too well. Tony says it's getting old. In about
2 minutes, he's going to book them for obstruction of justice,
and Richard can do his next remote from a jail cell. Richard
says he thinks he's serious, and they leave. Richard leaves
a microcassette recorder on the ledge on his way out.
Gwyn says it was right after Curtis died that she remembered
what the photo might be. Alex asks why she didn't tell him.
Gwyn asks how could she? She didn't want to go through it
all again; she saw how Curtis was treated when everyone
thought he was the killer. She knows Trisha is innocent, just
like she knew that Curtis was innocent, and she was just
buying time until the real killer was found; then maybe the
photo wouldn't matter. Tony asks what is it with that postcard?
Why do they all have the same picture? Gwyn says the same
people made them up that made up their Christmas cards. She
doesn't know why they did it, except that was when they were
all at their best, and that's the image she and Clay wanted to
represent themselves with; the perfect family. But of course
they never were. Ava says people were being killed, Gwyn
herself was almost killed, how could she keep this information
to herself? Gwyn says Ava's a mother; would she do every-
thing she could to protect her child? Ava says "I tried," and
turns her back on Alex. Tony asks if Gwyn has seen Trisha.
Gwyn says no. Alex says they want the truth, and they want
to protect Trisha. Gwyn says she doesn't believe him. Alex
says "you've seen her, haven't you?" Gwyn hesitates, then
says "she's in Corinth." The assembled company is shocked.
Gwyn says she's sorry, she saw Trisha in the park, but when
she saw Gwyn, she ran. Alex says that explains a lot of things.
But it doesn't explain what Neal Warren has to do with this, or
why the postcard was in his possession. Gwyn looks surprised,
and says "Neal? I have no idea."

Neal is still looking for the postcard. Kate comes in and jokes
that the towels have to stay. Neal says he misplaced some
mementos. Kate says she'll help him look. "NO," Neal says.
Kate is surprised. Neal apologizes, and says he has a confession
to make. Kate says he doesn't have to confess anything to her.
Neal says it's nothing like that. Does she remember when she
accused him of trying to smuggle in some girly magazines?
Well, some of the postcards are kind of racy. Kate feigns
shock; Neal says it's his merchant marine days. He probably
left them at the Bistro, he says. Kate says don't worry about
the mess, she's been planning to clean behind the bureau
anyway. Neal says in that case, it's probably time to be
going. Neal says she's a saint; a saint who can cook, and
there aren't too many of them. Kate says if he wants to travel
light, he better shed some of that blarney. Neal says not a
chance. He guesses this is goodbye. Kate says how about
"until we meet again." Neal says he likes that much better.
Kate says he always has a room waiting for him. Neal says
"I'll never forget you, Katherine Rescott. Try to think well
of me, no matter what happens." Neal leaves. Kate looks
a little confused. She straightens the room a bit, and muses:
"Ava Marie Rescott, if you had anything to do with this man's..."

Frankie is ready to leave. Jacob comes in and gives him his
prescription. Frankie thanks him for everything, and says he
knows Jacob will miss him. Jacob laughs, and says yeah, he's
going to miss his snoring, and tripping over him when he gets
up in the middle of the night. Frankie says seriously, he got
a lot out of the talks they had. Jacob says not a problem, and
he's glad he's doing the right thing going home; he put his
mother through hell. "Charles too," Frankie says. Jacob
says "yeah, Charles too" rather unenthusiastically.
"Long night, huh?" Charles says to Angie, out in the hall.
Angie says it sure was. Charles says when she gets a chance,
there are a few things they need to talk about. Angie looks
somewhat alarmed at that prospect. Frankie and Jacob come
out. Jacob says this is the part where he heads back to work.
Frankie thanks him, and Charles says yeah, thanks; he's glad
there's an extra pair of eyes looking over everything. Jacob
says not a problem. Charles puts his arm around Frankie's
shoulder and leads him away, saying it's time he gave him
that lecture about biting off more than he can chew. Angie
lingers, and she and Jacob look longingly at each other. She
leaves. Jacob shudders (can't blame him, Charles gives me
the shudders, too).

LMT: "We are so close to the answer, I can feel it. Make sure
you tune in tomorrow when we'll find out the consequences of
figuring it out."
