LOVING Update for Friday, September 30:

STORYLINE: STEPHY'S PROBLEM
           (location: Alden barn)
* Cooper is looking at some old photos. Stephanie enters and says she
was looking for him. He says he was getting some stuff out of the way
so she and Clay could move right in. Stephanie brushes that comment
aside and picks up a tennis racket. She asks if he plays tennis; he
answers that the racket was his father's. When they died, all of their
stuff was shipped there. Stephanie asks what he is going to do with
all the stuff. Cooper says he'll put it into storage; he doesn't pay
very much attention to it anyway.
He asks why she came down there. She says she wanted to talk about
what happened earlier. He asks if she is feeling better; she says she
does. Stephanie asks if Cooper will do her a favor. He says he'll do
anything for her. She asks him to forget everything he saw.
* Cooper says he can't forget about it. She was throwing up! She says
she had the flu and, besides, it was none of his business. He says he
saw the junk food and he knows what she does with it. "No, I told
you --" "I *know* what you told me. It's about time you told me the
 truth!"  Stephanie says he wouldn't understand.  Cooper says he would;
everybody has secrets they are ashamed of. Stephanie spins around and
asks what his is. "You really want to know?" He says he has kept it
to himself -- that it was his fault and that he had done something
 wrong... "just like you."
* Cooper says it happened a long time ago. Cooper was pretty young, and
he was ashamed of it for a long time. Stephanie says he doesn't have
to talk about it, but he says he does. He says it was somebody he
trusted, somebody he was very close to. She asks if it was one of his
parents. No, his parents weren't around that much. It was one of his
nannies. "Did she molest you?" Cooper nods yes. "Oh my God. I'm
sorry, I had no idea." Cooper says he was afraid to tell anybody.
Stephanie says he should know that it wasn't his fault. Cooper says
he realizes that now, but it took a long time. He says he has a hard
time trusting people and getting close to them. He says he is trying
right now. Stephy says she is sorry about what he had to go through.
Cooper tries to get her to admit that she has felt sorry for herself,
too, and that she understands how he felt. Stephanie says she knows
what he is trying to do and she doesn't want to get into it. Cooper
asks if she trusts him, like he just trusted her. He says she can
tell him anything. "No I can't." He says she *can* and that he can
help her. She says she is OK. He says that she has a problem. She
says she doesn't. "Yes you do. You're bulimic." Stephanie turns to
him, then says she has to get out of there. Cooper stops her. "No,
 you *don't*."
* Cooper tells Stephy that he isn't going to let her leave like this.
She says she doesn't want to get into this right now. Cooper says he
talked to Angie about it. Stephy says she saw Angie when she was in
the hospital and she told her she had an eating disorder, but Stephanie
denies that is why she was in the hospital in the first place. Cooper
says he went to the library and read about bulimia. Stephy asks if
that makes him an expert. No, but he did find out that a lot of girls
have this problem, and they have low self-esteem... "Like *me*?" He
says he isn't judging her, but it seems to fit.
C: "You tell me if this rings a bell: you're feeling kind of fat, so you
go on a diet, but it's a pretty extreme diet, so you starve yourself,
and then something goes wrong, right? And you get a little angry and
 so you binge..."
S: "Don't do that!"
C: "...You start eating everything in sight, and *then*, you have blown
the diet, so you get more angry and you've gotta get rid of the food,
 so you purge..."
S: "No!"
C: "...Right? Is that what happened?"
S: "*NO*!"
There's a rather long pause.
S (softly): "Look, I just have a weak stomach, OK?"
C: "Stephy, don't lie to me, OK?"
S: "I'm not lying to you."
C: "The only way for you to get better is to admit to yourself that
 you have this, OK?"
S (angrily): "There's nothing wrong with me!"
Stephanie turns away. Cooper puts his hands on her shoulders.
C: "You're right. There's nothing wrong with you. You're amazing.
You're a beautiful girl who has everything in the world going for her.
 You can beat this!"
S: "I know."
C: "Stephy, listen to me. Noone else has to know about this. Just you
and me. You have to let me in, OK? I can't do it by myself."
S: "I know."
C: "Listen. It's really simple, OK? You just have to say you're
bulimic. Say it to yourself, OK? Just, say it, please?"
Stephanie debates whether to do so...

STORYLINE: NO REST FOR THE OWNER
           (starting location: The penthouse)
* Ava enters and calls to Alex. He says he'll be right down. Alex,
Kate, Sandy and Alexis come down the stairs. Ava asks what is going
on; Alex says they all have a date...with M-I-C-K-E-Y! "We're going
to Disney World." Ava says she can't go. Alex asks why not. Ava
says, "Well, I have a date with Jeremy." Alex looks confused...
* Alex asks what she means. She means a "meeting." Kate says surely
she and Jeremy can change their meeting. Ava says she cant; he is
doing so much for her at the store that she can't ask him to do that.
Alex offers to call Jeremy, but Ava stops him. She says they can't
just spring something like this on her at the last minute. Alex says
he talked to her about it this morning and she told him to "take care
of it." Ava says she doesn't remember; Alex says he isn't making it
up! Ava says she's so busy... Sandy asks if they're going. Alex says
it is up to her. Ava says she can't -- she has a store to run. Kate
says it is only a three-day weekend! Ava says she has to have the
holiday orders turned in by Monday. Kate reminds Ava that she said
that Burnell's can "practically run by itself." Ava asks Kate if she
thinks Ava would rather work than go on vacation. Alex intervenes and
says it's OK. The kids whine in protest. Alex says he has an idea:
"why don't we go to Buddy Bear's Pizza?" "NO!" After a pause, Ava
says, "All right. You guys are still going to see Mickey." Alex asks
if she has changed her mind. "No." She asks Kate to take her plane
ticket. Kate refuses, and they argue a bit about it. Ava says, "When
Jeremy and I were down in Orlando last year, we --" She turns to Alex
and says it was before he came home. Alex says he knows, she doesn't
have to explain. Ava pulls Kate aside and begs her to go. She says
it isn't fair for Alex to be alone with the kids. Kate says, "I know
that, Ava. The question is, do you?"
* [At the airport.]
Sandy and Alexis ask to go watch the planes. Alex says yes, but reminds
them to hold each other's hands. They leave. Alex admits to Kate that
he has second thoughts about going to Orlando. "You mean, because of
Jeremy?" Kate tells him not to worry; that's over. Alex says they are
working very closely together. Kate says he can't believe anything is
going on. Alex says he doesn't, but he wishes he knew what was going
on in Ava's head. Kate says, "It seems like it's just pressure from
this blankety-blank job!" Alex says he's sure that's what it is. Kate
says it is a shame that she can't get away for a three-day weekend.
Alex says he is sure that she would rather be with them having fun than
here working, if she had a choice. Kate says Ava *did* have a choice,
and she chose to ask Cabot for Burnell's. Alex says she got more than
she bargained for. Kate says that's what always happens: the thing you
get for free ends up costing the most. Alex considers that.

STORYLINE: AND WHO IS DENISE?
           (starting location: abandoned warehouse)
* Jeremy is working on some art. Gilbert enters. He tosses a bag at
Jeremy, saying they had some leftovers from the business luncheon.
"Might be a little stale, but you can't be too choosy now, can you?"
Jeremy ignores Gilbert. Gilbert asks if he is getting the silent
treatment. Jeremy says he is just doing as he has been told. Gilbert
tells him not to work too hard; he doesn't want anyone thinking that
he runs a "sweat shop." "Especially now, with your _other_ condition."
Jeremy asks what he is talking about. Gilbert says, "Didn't you know?
You are now suffering from a brain tumor." "Is that what you tell
people now?" Gilbert just laughs and asks to see what he is drawing.
Jeremy turns the pad to reveal a pencil sketch of the photo of the two
of them. Gilbert asks what the hell *that* is. "Don't you recognize
them, Gilbert? It's you and me."
* Jeremy says he was thinking about how close they were as boys. "Don't
you remember, Gilbert?" He says he doesn't need a drawing to remind
him. It's etched in his brain: Jeremy left Gilbert to die! Jeremy
says he didn't, but Gilbert tells the story:
G: "It was a beautiful day. Beautiful spring day. We went out to play
-- we always did. Mother called after us to be careful. There was a
bird nest up in the tree. We climbed it to get a better look -- it
was your idea. We went out on a limb, me first. Then it happened.
The sound: the awful cracking. The branch started to give way and the
limb broke. I reached out for your hand and held on, until your hand
slipped out of mine -- or until you let it go!"
J: "I *tried* to save you!"
G: "I was there. You're re-writing history."
J: "Gilbert, I held on to you for as long as I could."
G: "You didn't do enough. You let go! I started my long descent into
hell. And now, it's your turn, brother dear!"
* J: "Gilbert, I know how you suffered."
G: "No. But you _will_."
J: "I suffered too, knowing that I couldn't save you."
G: "Oh. Well, let me get out my violins."
J (getting up): "I loved you."
Jeremy screams in pain. Gilbert asks what now. Jeremy says his ankles
are swollen and the shackles are causing him pain. "Oh, well. Darn."
Jeremy asks him to *please* let him go. Gilbert says Jeremy hasn't
suffered quite enough. "Not even close to what I went through."
Gilbert says he was in a coma for a month, away from his home and his
family. Jeremy says that their parents visited him every day. Gilbert
asks why Jeremy didn't visit. He says he wasn't allowed to. Gilbert
says no, their parents were protecting "their darling little prince."
Jeremy says they all prayed for him. Gilbert asks why, then, did they
stop visiting him. "Because you were transferred." ...to a hospital
for special children, over 2000 miles away. Jeremy says they went as
much as they could. Father did, anyway; mother was too ill. Gilbert
asks if she was too ill to see her dying child, and Jeremy says yes,
she hardly ever left the house. Gilbert doesn't believe it. Jeremy
says mother never recovered. Gilbert says she never *cared*, then,
when he *did* come out of the coma, "I asked for my mommy. I needed
her. She wasn't there, or dead." Denise had told Gilbert that they
had *given up* on him! Jeremy says she lied because she wanted him
for herself. Gilbert says it made sense: they still had one healthy
son, so why bother with the damaged one? "We were told you had died!
Gilbert, we received your ashes." "What a relief that must have been
for you." Jeremy says no, they would have done *anything* for him.
Gilbert said Denise told him, right before she died, that she sent
ashes from the fireplace. He says it would have been *easy* for them
to check that out! Jeremy said that Denise did a cruel, horrible trick
 on *all* of them.
G: "Not as cruel as father and mother played on me. They let go of me
so easily. Just as you did."
J: "Look, if it's revenge you want, you won't change anything."
G: "It may do in a pinch."
J: "It won't make you feel any better."
G: "I don't know about that. I'm having a pretty good time right now."
J: "You'll be found out."
G: "No, _you_ will. You pretend to be such a big hero, a helping hand
to everyone. Everyone except your own brother, of course. When push
came to shove, you saved yourself. You sacrificed me!"
J: "No. I never sacrificed you. I never forgot you. Gilbert, look!
[He holds up the drawing.] Look at this picture. This is how it was
for us. This is how it should still be now for us!"
After a long pause, Gilbert reaches for the sketch pad, but pulls his
hand back. He almost starts to cry. He leaves, speechless.
J: "It could be. You know it."
* [At the Penthouse]
Outside, Gilbert straightens his coat, then knocks on the door. Ava
yells at him to come in; it's open. He does. Ava is out on the
balcony. Gilbert asks what she is doing there. "Not much." Ava says
there's a beautiful light in the sky and invites him to look at it with
her. He wants to get down to business. He takes little baby steps
toward the balcony. "I'm not very comfortable with heights, OK?" Ava
says she didn't know that; he's been out there with her about a dozen
times. He says he would have done anything for her. "Not any more?"
Ava sneaks behind Gilbert and pushes him out onto the balcony. "What
are you doing?" "Don't worry; I've got ahold of you, I'm not going to
let you go." Gilbert looks down and flashes back (audio only) to a
child's voice: "I've got you, and I won't let you go, Gilbert."
