LOVING Update for Friday, September 2:

STORYLINE: DINAH LEE'S MEDICAL PROBLEMS and STACEY LOSES BUCK AGAIN
           (location: hospital)
* Trucker is waiting for news on Dinah Lee. Stacey enters and asks how
she is. He tells her that the doctors said she had an embolus -- some
sort of blockage in her brain -- and that they would return to explain
more about that later. He asks about the reporters in the lobby. She
tells him about Cabot's appearance at the anniversary celebration, and
about his giving Kate 49% of Alden Enterprises. Trucker is stunned!
* "Dinah Lee was pregnant?" Trucker tells Stacey that they couldn't
save the baby. Stacey says she is so sorry. Trucker says that when
he gave her the ring, he thought they had all the time in the world to
have more kids... Stacey tries to reassure him that he does.
The doctor enters. He says she is still the same, and tells Trucker
that he can't visit her right now. Stacey asks exactly what happened,
and the doctor says she had a cerebral vascular insult -- a stroke.
"She has trouble moving her left side, and difficulty talking." She
asks if she will recover, and the doctor says that full recovery is
not unusual. He tells them to get something to eat and try to relax.
"She's in good hands." He leaves.
Stacey suggests that they take the doctor's advice. Trucker says he
wishes Buck were here, so he could be here for him. "Buck is here in
the hospital?" Trucker says he is, and he feels terribly responsible
for the whole accident. Stacey says maybe she shouldn't be here.
He tells her not to run away. [Buck enters from the background.]
Trucker tells her it's too late anyway. Buck approaches: "Stacey."
"Hi, Buck." Stacey looks at him sternly...
* Stacey says she had better leave. Trucker reminds her that they were
going to get some coffee. Buck says he'll stay and let them know if
anything changes. Trucker and Stacey leave; Tess approaches. She asks
why he didn't go with them. "Someone has to stay here." She asks if
he is still in love with Stacey. "Hey, mind your own business." Tess
asks if he has heard about Cabot Alden. He says it was difficult not
to. He sits down. "Twisted, isn't it?" "What do you mean by that?"
"Well, he's older. He's lived a good life. Now, he gets a second
chance." Tess asks if he resents Cabot for that. "No. Where's Dinah
Lee's second chance? She's young. She hasn't even lived her life
yet. Maybe now she won't get to because of me."
* [In the hospital cafeteria.]
Stacey is telling Trucker that if Buck is *that* depressed, maybe he
should see a therapist. Trucker starts to ask for a favor, and Stacey
tells him to not even ask! He asks anyway, saying that Buck felt good
when they were together before, and she could help him now. She says
everything is different now, and she can't set herself up to be hurt
again. "He loves you, Stacey." "He walked out on me." "He was afraid
that he was bad for you, and bad for your children, OK? The love is
still there. He never stopped loving you. Go to him, please?"
[In the waiting area.]
Tess reassures him that there must have been something wrong with the
plane; it's not his fault. Buck says he should have gone over the
plane more thoroughly before he took off. Tess tells him to stop
blaming himself. Buck says he killed his daughter and Dinah Lee's
baby. "Do you know how much she wanted that kid? Trucker's kid.
It should have been me who died." Tess gives him a big hug, just as
Stacey enters. She turns and...hesitantly...walks out.

STORYLINE: ACCEPT THE GIFT OR NOT? and CASEY FINDS OUT THE MONEY SECRET
           (location: Kate's house)
* "We're in the money, the skies are sunny, we've got a lot of what it
takes to get along." Ava is singing and laughing in celebration.
[Hey, Lisa: don't ever give up acting for singing.] Kate and Alex try
to calm her down, but Ava tells them to stop acting like disaster has
struck. "No more clipping coupons, no more boarders in this house, no
more pies that you have to bake, we can finally unload this eyesore of
a house." Kate points out that Ava was born in this eyesore. Ava says
she knows, but she doesn't have to make a shrine out of it. She has
been trying to get out of this house for her whole life and now she
can. "Thank you, God! Thank you, Cabot Alden!"
* Ava tells Kate to "think of it as the long arm of cosmic justice,
reaching across the generations to touch our family and give it what
it's been due." Kate ignores Ava, taking off her shoes and saying
that her feet are killing her. Tess enters and says that the phones
at the agency are ringing off the hook. Kate says it will only get
worse. Ava pipes up, "Our lives will never be the same again. Ugh.
We really must do something about this house before the media arrives."
Kate asks *who*? Ava says never mind, we should get rid of it. Kate
says she is *not* getting rid of her home. Ava says she didn't mean
that she should burn it, she should donate it to the Salvation Army.
Casey and Ally come downstairs. They say they had to take the phone off
the hook so Tyler could get some sleep, and ask what is going on. Ava
tells them that they are all millionaires, that Cabot Alden made the
announcement of the century at Burnell's today. Ally asks what he
said. Ava tells them about Cooper's speech and Cabot's offer to make
up for the awful thing Cabot's father did to Kate's father years ago.
Ally asks, "What awful thing?" Ava says that John Sowolsky (Kate's
father) was the marketing genius behind Lady Alden Soap. The Aldens
lost everything in the stock market crash, but because of John, they
became rich again. John was supposed to get a share of it, but "Old
Man Alden" cheated him out of it, and Cabot is giving them the 49%
share of AE to make up for that. Tess asks Kate what she thinks of
all this; she says she hasn't gotten past the fact that "Buddy," the
cook at the diner, is Cabot. Alex tells her to kick her feet up and
rest. Ally leaves to make some tea for everyone; Tess follows. Casey
kisses Kate and asks if he can take care of her investments. They
 laugh, then he leaves.
Kate says she's not so sure that this is such a good idea for her. Ava
tells her to lighten up. "Lady luck has finally smiled on us, mama."
Alex tries to get Ava to lighten up, asking if she thinks maybe Kate
needs some time to get used to all of this. Ava can't believe it.
"To get used to *being rich*?" She reminds Kate of Harry's elation
when he won the lottery. Kate promises to work on it.
Ava realizes that all of Harry's predictions have now come true, and
she runs to tell Ally of that revelation.
Kate tells Alex that she doesn't know what to do about Ava. She knows
Ava has always wanted more than she could have, but she says that her
growing up in this neighborhood gave Ava her inner strength. Alex
says that Ava will come around. Kate says she wishes Ava was more
content with her life. Alex agrees, saying she wishes Ava knew her
weak spots (especially about money) better.
Everyone returns with tea. Ava decides she should see Dinah Lee at the
hospital. Tess says that Ava should stay here, and that she will go
by the hospital and talk to Dinah Lee. She congratulates Kate again
and leaves. Everyone begins pouring their tea...
* Ava (oh, God, she's singing again) lugs a trash bag down the stairs.
She has cleaned some of Kate's "tacky old house dresses" out of the
closet. Alex asks if she asked Kate if she could do that, and she
says she will now. She asks where Kate is. Alex says she went out.
Ava is disappointed; she wanted to take her out to lunch to celebrate.
She asks where Kate went. "Church." "Church? Why? What's to pray
for? [Laughs.] There isn't anything left." Alex doesn't think that
is funny; Ava says she's kidding. She wants to celebrate with Alex.
Alex says it will be just her -- he has to get back to work. "Alex,
are you out of your mind? What are you talking about? Don't you get
it? You, my darling, don't have to work another day for the rest of
your life, if you don't want to." "Ava, don't *you* get it?" "What?
What, sweetie?" Alex realizes that she doesn't get it. "Never mind."
He walks toward the door. Ava asks, "What? What were you going to
say?" He says nothing. As Alex leaves, Ava says she loves him, and
to have a good day. "Well, *I* will."
Kate enters from the kitchen. "Oh, good. You're back." Kate tells
her that she just had a talk with Father Machit. "Mama, you're not
gonna do something like give a whole chunk of money to the Church,
are you?" Kate says that isn't what was on her mind, and asks Ava to
sit down: "There's something I want to talk to you about." "Oh, I
know, mama. I know what you're going to talk to me about. And I've
been doing a lot of thinking about this money. And I don't want to
get greedy or anything, you know. Alex and I, all we really need is
a house. A small one -- well, maybe a medium-sized one out by the
Aldens --" Kate interrupts her: "Ava, now just stop here. I've been
thinking about this too, and that's why I went to Church. To pray,
and ask God for guidance on this because, honey girl, I'm really not
sure I should accept this gift from Cabot." *Blank stare* from Ava.
* Cooper arrives [see below]. Ally says that Kate isn't there, and
Tyler is asleep. Cooper asks how it feels for her to be an heiress.
"It's gotta be a nice change." She says that nobody works harder than
Casey, and it's just as nice that way. Cooper says that isn't what he
meant. They apologize to each other. Ally says that money is still a
touchy subject, but the money Cooper gave Tyler has been a big help.
"You never had to use it, though, right?" "I did, for the house."
Cooper is surprised, but says he is glad it came in handy. Ally says
it has to be their secret. "Casey has no idea about this." Cooper
asks where Casey thinks the money came from; Ally says she told him
that her parents sent it to them as a belated wedding present. Cooper
promises not to say a word. We see a shot of a dejected Casey, who is
 listening at the screen door.

STORYLINE: I PREFER THE LEMON MERINGUE
           (location: Alden mansion, library)
* Deborah is alone in the library. She is frustrated, repeating "Kate!"
in utter disbelief. "Hmph. Over my dead body!" "I think that can be
arranged, actually." Cooper enters the room. Deborah rips into him
for being so stupid as to bring Cabot out into the open. She accuses
him of trying to destroy Clay so Stephanie will fall into his arms.
"Wrong." Deborah says she wants to split them up as much as he does,
but they have to work together. She says she has a plan. "Ooh! A
plan," Cooper almost giggles. She says they have to hurry, because
Clay and Stephanie will be there any minute. Just then, Stephanie
enters. "It's too late, mother dear. I'm back."
* She asks what kind of hatchet job Deborah has planned for her *this*
time. Deborah just asks where Clay is, and Stephanie says she isn't
his keeper. She is only there to escape the press. Cooper says, "It's
funny to think of this place as 'safe.'" "Stephy!" Clay enters the
room. He says he has been looking all over for her. Stephy says she
needs some time alone, and Clay says no, they need some time together.
He asks if she is going to stay with him.
S: "Don't do this, Clay."
C: "I love you."
S: "You love me?"
C: "Yes."
S: "You love me? You *dumped* me, Clay."
C: "I did that to protect you."
S: "You did it to protect *yourself*. You had a choice: me or all of
this. The business, the money, the power. I lost, and that's fine,
but don't come crawling back to me."
C: "No, no, no. Everything I did was to protect the family."
Clay notices Cooper and says that what *he* did was self-serving. Clay
asks Cooper how much the tabloids paid him to destroy the family.
Cooper brushes him off and says his loyalty is to Uncle Cabot. "Uncle
Cabot? You want to put the Alden empire in the hands of a dottering
old man?" Cooper points out that it is his money. Clay asks if he
has no problem giving 49% of AE to "a -- a landlady, a *boarding house*
landlady, who bakes pies for pin money?" "No problem at all."
Cabot enters. "Well said, Cooper. Her blueberry crumb is my personal
favorite. What about the rest of you?" Cooper smiles. We see shots
of Clay and Deborah, both mad enough to spit nails.
* Clay brings Cabot a drink.
Clay: "I wasn't insulting you, father. I was simply trying to point
out that running a boarding house is a far cry from running a major
company like AE. It would be idiocy for any of us to think that Kate
Slavinsky would have any idea of how to do that."
Cabot: "Well, I can help her along until she learns the ropes."
Deborah: "But it's too late in life for Kate to acquire the skills that
she needs to run a business."
Clay: "She will *sink* the company."
Cabot: "Then so be it."
Deborah (sighs): "I think I'm going to be sick."
Cabot: "You're excused."
Of course, she doesn't go anywhere. :-)
Cabot: "One thing more. You accuse Cooper of disloyalty to the family.
Nothing could be further from the truth. He honored my desire for
privacy. He saw to it that I had comfortable digs. He helped give
Kate what was rightfully hers. No questions asked. He's one of the
most honest and decent men I've ever known. [He turns to Cooper.]
'Buddy' and I will always be grateful."
Cooper (quite embarrassed): "There's no need for that. But...it was
nice to meet both of you."
Deborah: "I only hope and pray that Kate has the same kind of honor and
 decency."
Cabot: "Any reason to think otherwise?"
Deborah: "Oh, Cabot, I only meant that...if Kate realizes she could ruin
the family by accepting your offer, then the decent thing for her to do
would be to turn it down."
Cabot: "I won't let her."
Deborah: "But I don't mean that she shouldn't have anything. [You can
almost see the light go on over her head.] An annuity. That's it.
A generous annuity. That way, she could retire in comfort, and then
the rest of us wouldn't have to be on the welfare lines."
Cabot: "Do you have any other ideas?"
Deborah (thinks it over): "Well, not at the moment."
Cabot: "Good. [To Cooper.] If you're not busy, I wish you'd stop by
Kate's and have a talk with her."
Cooper: "Sure. I'd be happy to."
Cabot: "Answer any questions she might have. If she'd like to talk to
me, ask her to join us for dinner."
Clay: "Dinner?"
Cooper: "OK. I'll extend the invitation. Stephy, do you want to come
along? I know that you've been wanting to see Tyler --"
Clay: "Stephy, please stay."
Stephanie (thinks about it, turns to Cooper): "Maybe next time, OK?"
Cooper: "Sure." He leaves.
Cabot: "Deborah, why don't you be helpful and organize some lunch."
Deborah: "Cabot, I would be very happy to do that for you. [As she is
leaving, almost screaming.] This is the worst day of my life!!"
Clay: "More to come..."
* Clay is on the phone, telling Lenox that he doesn't care if they are
from the London Times, NO INTERVIEWS! He slams the phone down.
Stephanie and Deborah enter. Stephy says there is a big crowd outside
 now.
Deborah (to Clay): "Do you realize we're going to be prisoners in our
own home, all because of your father?"
Clay: "Go rant somewhere else, will ya?"
D: "I am *not* going anywhere. Not until we stop him."
Stephanie offers to leave, but Clay tries to stop her. She says that
they have talked about everything they have to talk about. Deborah
 encourages her to leave.
C: "Go to your room, Deborah."
D: "I will NOT!"
Clay grabs her by the shoulder, pushes her halfway across the room, and
screams, "Get OUT of here!" Deborah runs off. Stephanie says that
maybe the two of them have more in common than they care to admit.
Clay says he knows that she has been terribly hurt by all of this, but
there is a piece left in all of this that she doesn't know. "I haven't
been able to tell you until today." "What?" "Your mother and I are
not legally married." "*What*?" "The wedding ceremony was a fake!"
 Stephanie looks perplexed...
