LOVING Update for Friday, August 12:

STORYLINE: TH' HAPPENIN'S AT TH' OL' RODEO
           (location: Rodeo Bar)
* Buck and Jamie enter after their trip to have their blood checked out
to see if their bone marrow will help Angie out. He offers her some
orange juice, asking if that isn't what you are "supposed" to have
after giving blood. She says she wouldn't know. He asks if it feels
good. "What? Having a needle in your arm?" No, he says, helping
someone out. She says she can _live_ with it. She thanks him for
pushing her to go. He says he just gave her a little nudge.
Angie enters, practically dragging her mother Pat, Charles and Frankie.
She introduces Pat to Janie. Pat thanks Janie for what she did for
Angie in Boston. Janie says she didn't do that much. Buck, nosey as
ever, chimes in that she "didn't do" something today. "What?" "I
just gave a little blood. Big deal." Angie is quite pleased, but
Janie asks her not to thank her yet; she isn't so sure about "that
bone marrow stuff." Angie says she is sure about her and hugs her.
We see a shot of Frankie, smiling.
[Outside.]
Curtis is still holding the photo Tommy gave her of Buck's former
girlfriend. Tommy enters, saying, "Pretty, isn't she?" Curtis says
it is a lovely picture of Buck's ex-girlfriend, but he wants Tommy to
find his daughter. Tommy reminds Curtis that he had a lead; the lead
panned out and he has found Buck's daughter, "and you won't *believe*
where she is. Right here in Corinth."
* [Inside.]
Angie says Frankie told her that Janie has a job and a place of her
own. Janie says that neither is anything to write home about, but it
"does beat what I had in Boston." Angie tells Janie that she can call
and talk *any time*, it doesn't have to be a big deal, she can call
just to talk. "Thanks, Angie." Pat thanks her for taking that test.
Janie says she can thank Buck, too, since he went with her. Frankie
says *so* many people have called to help, thanks to the wonders of
radio, "and my sexy voice." He takes a little abuse for that...
Stacey, J. J. and Heather enter. The kids run up and sit at the bar,
screaming hello to Buck. He gives Heather a kiss. Stacey, standing
a good distance back from the bar, says that they missed him and she
promised that they could have dinner there if they behaved halfway
normally. Heather screams, "I want a Double Buck Cheeseburger!!"
The three of them go and sit at a table.
Stacey tells Angie that she is waiting for results from her blood test
to come back. Angie thanks her and congratulates her on getting back
together with Buck. Janie scowls when she hears that. Frankie drags
her away. Stacey informs Angie that she is *only* there for the kids.
Over by the juke box, Janie complains about Frankie grabbing her all the
time. Frankie tells Janie that he just wanted to give her his personal
thanks. He also apologizes for the other day at the Diner. Janie,
all the time staring at Buck, tells him that he saved her job and he
has *her* personal thanks. "Hey, somebody is mellowing out here."
She continues to stare at Buck and says, "Yeah, I guess I am."
Frankie looks over his shoulder to see what she is staring at.
Curtis tells Angie and Stacey that he gets his test results back next
week. Pat says that at this rate, a match is bound to turn up soon.
Charles shows them the flyers he had printed up for the donor drive,
and asks if he could leave a few at the Rodeo. Curtis says he'll do
that one better. "Ladies and Gentlemen, can I have your attention,
please? [The bar quiets a bit.] This is Dr. Angie Hubbard and her
family. Now, you may have heard about the drive to find a bone marrow
donor for her. Well, things are going so well I want to buy everybody
a drink on the house! [General celebration.] And, dinner on the house
for anyone willing to be tested!" More celebration. Angie says she is
going to cry. Curtis asks her who the girl is with Frankie. She says
that she is someone special and takes him to introduce her. He says
that Angie's friends are always welcome here. Janie says he has a real
cool place here. He thanks her and hopes he'll see her there a lot.
Looking at Buck again, she tells Curtis that he will. Curtis leaves to
serve the free drinks. Stacey stops him and tells him that was very
generous and that he may have a heart in there after all.
* Curtis is sauntering through the Rodeo. Buck gets up and says he'll
get back to work. Curtis tells him not to bother, and asks if they can
be friends. "What? Where'd that come from?" He says he realizes that
it wasn't Buck's fault that Dinah Lee left town. He extends his hand.
Buck shakes it. Heather asks if they can play the juke box. J. J.
says, "No slow, mushy songs." They go to the juke box. Stacey asks
if they *really* made up. Curtis asks, "You don't trust me very much,
do you?" "I want to." Curtis says he *does* miss Dinah Lee, but he
has gotten it through "his thick skull" that it is over between them.
"What about when she gets back?" Curtis isn't sure that they could be
friends, but they should be able to be civil, like Stacey and Buck.
"Yeah, right." He asks if she would rather not see him at all. She
doesn't know. He asks if Buck has said anything to her about the
future -- in particular, does he plan to stay in Corinth? "Now why
would you want to know that?"
Charles gets up from the table to ask Angie for a dance. That leaves
Pat and Frankie, who is staring at Janie. "Uh, do you see something
interesting?" "Maybe." She asks if he wants her advice. He does; he
pulls his chair closer to her. "Go for it, babe." That is enough for
Frankie. He smiles at Pat, gets up and goes to Janie. He asks if he
can grab her again -- just for a dance. "If you try not to rough me
up." "I'll do my best." They go to the dance floor. Pat chuckles.
Janie steps on Frankie's foot. She apologizes, asking what the deal is
with Buck and those kids. Frankie says Buck and Stacey used to go out.
"Not any more?" "I'm not sure. Why?" "I'm just asking. I may become
a bigger part of his life than he thinks." Frankie stops dancing to
try to figure *that* comment out.
* Curtis tells Stacey that he only asks for business reasons: Buck is
a great bartender and he'd hate to lose him. She says that just the
other day, she had to talk him out of *firing* him. "He had just
attacked me." She asks if he has forgiven him just like that. Curtis
says he feels good now, better than he has in a while, and he just
knows he doesn't need an enemy right now: not Trucker, not Buck, not
Dinah Lee, and especially not Stacey. She says she is not his enemy.
He says he'd like things to be the way they were before. "So would I."
"Maybe a little more." She asks what he means. He asks, if he behaves
himself, would she consider going out with him sometime? He tells her
not to answer right now -- he has nothing but time. Stacey, looking
 a bit confused, just smiles.
Angie asks Charles if he ever told him what a wonderful dancer he is.
He says, "Gregory Hines, eat your heart out!" She asks if she ever
told him that she loves him. He smiles and says he doesn't remember.
She kisses him. They look at Frankie and Janie, and she says that it
looks like love is "in the air" tonight.
Frankie tells Janie that he thought she was smart. She says she knows
a few things. Frankie tells her that she should know that Buck is
"about as wrong for you as a person could get." She says that is his
opinion; Buck just needs a little "convincing," that's all. Frankie
wishes her "lotsa luck," breaks off their dance and goes to Pat. He
asks her to tell Angie and Charles that he went home on his own. She
asks about his "friend." "Trust me, she'll be just fine on her own.
 See ya." Frankie leaves.
Buck is on the phone to Tommy. Buck says it has been over a week and
asks what is going on. [Janie is in the background, staring.] Tommy
answers that he was waiting until he had some good news. "Wait until
you hear this, papa bear. Your baby bear has been found." [The camera
has panned and now we see a rather smug Curtis in the background.]
Silently, Buck hangs up the phone. Curtis forms his hand into a "gun"
 and "shoots" Buck.

STORYLINE: THE HAPPENINGS AT RALPH'S
           (location: Ralph's Diner)
* Cooper and Stephanie enter the kitchen. Cabot is finishing cooking a
burger and fries. Cooper tells "Uncle Cabot" that he did exactly what
he asked; that he has called off the dogs, etc., etc. Cabot keeps
saying, "fine, fine," trying to shut him up. Cooper says he wants to
know why they locked Cabot up. Cabot says he knows what Cooper wants,
and he is going to have it, he promises.
Tess and Kate enter. Kate thanks Tess for taking her out. Tess sees
Cooper in the kitchen and calls to him. Cooper forces a smile.
* Cooper says, through smiling (gritted) teeth, "Stay here." He goes
out to see Tess and Kate. She asks what he was doing in the kitchen.
He says he was trying to find his waitress, to get his check. He asks
what they're doing there. Kate says they are there to get some pie
tins, and Tess was sweet enough to drive her. Tess says that is a
good thing, because otherwise, she might not have seen him for the rest
of the week. Cooper apologizes, saying he has been "so crazy busy."
Kate leaves to do her business.
Tess asks if the Clay and Deborah investigation is what took up all of
his time. He says, "Actually, no. The investigation is officially
over." She asks what he found. "Not a thing." She asks what the
Cradle Foundation was all about. He says it is just an innocent little
foundation, and as far as why Clay and Deborah got married, it is their
own twisted business. He gets close to her and says he would like to
start a special investigation of their own. "Definitely." She asks if
he is sure that the other one is finished. He smiles and they kiss.
We pan to Cabot, who asks Stephanie what those two are doing. She says
they are what you call an "item." He says he calls it nonsense. "Even
a fool could see that he should be with you."
Cooper tells Tess that they *have* resolved the family matters-- Kate
goes to enter the kitchen. Cooper yells, "Kate! Don't go in there!"
* Tess asks what is going on. Cooper says that the cook is cranky, and
he just wanted to warn her. Kate enters the kitchen. Stephanie is
hiding behind the door, Cabot is cooking at the grill. A voice calls
to her that the pie tins are under the counter. She goes out of the
kitchen and gets them from Barb, then she goes back over to Tess and
Cooper. Tess tells her she almost got into trouble, and asks if she
would mind taking the car; she wants to stay and talk to Cooper. He
says he doesn't have time to talk; he has "these things" to do. She
asks why she has the feeling that he is trying to keep something from
her. He just says that sooner or later -- preferably sooner -- he will
get everything done, and they can start their investigation. He says
he is sorry; he's crazy today. He'll call her in an hour. "Do I have
any choice?" He kisses her. She and Kate leave. Cooper walks slowly
into the kitchen. He says the coast is clear. Stephanie asks if he
realizes how close they came. He says he is getting used to close
calls. He turns to Cabot and wants him to talk. "Talk about what?"
He says that he had told him he wanted to give him something. "That,
I have." Cabot picks up a plate. "Halibut. Arrived this morning."
"I don't want any fish!" "Absolutely fresh. Guaranteed." Cooper is
frustrated. He asks about the stroke, about being locked up by Clay.
Cabot says he doesn't know any Clay, he wasn't locked up, and he didn't
have a stroke. Cooper asks about the time he was supposedly dead.
Stephanie says Cooper is confused. Cabot says, "You're darn right
he's confused. Cozying up to that cheap blonde when he could have
had -- been with you. Some people don't even see the nose on their
own face--" "UNCLE CABOT!" "Stop calling me that." Cooper says he
answered to it before, when he said he didn't want to go home, that
he would die all over again. Cabot holds the sandwich up. "Don't you
want this?" "NO!!" Stephanie calms him down. "No thank you."
Cabot: "It's shameful to waste food. Especially during the Depression.
People in bread lines, people selling apples on the streets, big men
who have everything. But they wouldn't turn up their noses at a good
 meal..."
"Please, Uncle Cabot, listen to me--" "Buddy. My name is Buddy. If
you can't call a man by his name, then just don't talk to him at all."
He ushers them out of the kitchen, then pulls down the shade. Stephy
says, "The poor man." Cooper says he doesn't get it -- before, he was
Cabot Alden and he knew it, and now he's Buddy and he is in the middle
of the Depression? "What the hell is going on?"
Cabot is making a phone call. "And good evening to you, dear. Do you
deliver flowers? Excellent. I would like -- a dozen of your finest
red roses. To a very special woman." He keeps talking, but we don't
 hear who gets the roses.
* [In the living room of Kate's house.]
Kate asks Tess if she wants more coffee. She says no, thanks. Kate
says it hasn't been an hour yet. Tess asks if she seems anxious.
Kate says she's noticed that Cooper hasn't been around lately. Tess
says he has had some family business to take care of, but when they
are together, it is "quality time." Kate takes a deep breath, and Tess
asks if she detects a note of disapproval. Kate says it isn't for her
to approve or disapprove, but it does seem that Cooper is a little bit
"on again, off again." Tess says she is sure they are going to see a
lot more of each other. "You kinda like this guy, huh?" "If I wasn't
a jaded Woman Of The World, I would say that I'm in love with him."
They laugh. Kate says even if she is in love, it is nice to be loved
back. "I am. No, I think he really cares about me, I do. OK, so
maybe his feelings aren't as strong for me as mine are for him, but
I'm willing to wait." Kate says she doesn't want to put a damper on
this -- maybe she has become a jaded Mother Of The World -- but...
The doorbell rings. Kate says it's Cooper, there to show her that she
is all wet. She goes to answer the door. "Flower delivery." Kate
signs for it. She smiles and turns to Kate, saying these must be from
Cooper. Tess says that they probably include his regrets. She opens
them and says they are gorgeous. Kate agrees. Tess says, "Hey, these
are for you!" "Me?" She asks who they are from, but nobody signed the
card. "It looks like you have a secret admirer." Kate takes a rose
from the box, as Tess says, "Look at *that*."
[At Ralph's.]
Cabot comes out of the kitchen, and tells Cooper and Stephanie that he
is just going to have to throw the halibut away.
Cooper: "Uncle Cabot, please listen to me."
Cabot: "Eat it. It's not poisonous. Unlike the almighty Aldens.
 Poisonous through and through."
Cooper: "What are you talking about?"
Cabot (angrily): "The audacity. Lies. Prevarications. I tried to talk
to him, tried to reason with him. Wouldn't listen. Fixed the books,
left the dirty mess on my conscience."
Cooper: "What are you talking about?!"
Cabot (meekly): "Talking about?"
Cooper: "Yeah. *Who* fixed the books?"
Cabot (angrily): "*All* of them, with their books, conniving, stealing.
And where did it get them? First place in the bread lines!"
Cabot laughs. He turns and walks back to the kitchen, singing, "Once I
built a railroad, made it run..." [_Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?_]
Cooper turns to Stephanie and says that Cabot knows who he is. She
says, "Some of the time, yes." Cooper says he is fighting not to
 remember something.
S: "Something really, really bad must have happened to him."
C: "Yeah. I'm going to find out what it was."
