Welcome to the Thursday, August 11, 1994 Loving Update!

Next week's update will be brought to you by Cari Burstein. The week
after that will be brought to you by Debbie Minett. *I* am going on
vacation! :-))))))))))))))))))))))))

Hunter & Wilder

Jeremy and Gwyn are pitching their Lady Alden campaign to Deborah. It
sounds wonderful. They are going to recreate an era at Burnell's with
sales clerks dressed in period costume, old-fashioned cash registers,
and the tub in the windows, with a woman taking a bath with Lady Alden
soap.
G: Well, what do you think?
D: That's it?
G: You don't like it?
D: Well let me put it this way, no.
G: Why not?
D: Well, that bathtub thing's been done to death. I was hoping for something...
more original...something more...well...good.

Clay's office

Clay's secretary wants to know what she should do with the stuff that Alex
left behind on Clay's desk. Clay tells her to burn it, but then Alex
comes in. Clay's secretary leaves. Alex opens an envelope and pulls
out a picture. It is the picture of Cabot that Cooper took in the park.
Clay: Where did you get this?
Alex: That doesn't matter. That proves that Cabot is alive and is right
here in Corinth.

Ralph's diner

Cooper is staring at Cabot through the kitchen window.
Cooper: Uncle Cabot?
Cabot: Halibut? Sorry, son, we're all out of halibut.
Then Cabot closes the sliding door on the kitchen window.
Cooper goes back to his table with Steffi.
Did you talk to him?
You're not going to believe this.
Why, what did he say?
He's alive.
Did you think he was dead?
No, no, that's my Uncle Cabot. He's alive!

Opening Credits.

Hunter & Wilder

G: What exactly is it that you don't like.
D: Maybe it would be simpler if I told you what I do like.
J: Fine. What's that?
D: Nothing.
G: Deborah, we're talking about a live model taking a bath in a display window
using our product.
J: Guaranteed to grab the attention of anyone passing by.
D: That's not the point, it's in bad taste. And besides, it's been done
already.
J: I've never seen anyone taking a bath in a store window before.
D: Well, why don't you just have a naked lady jumping out of a cake?
J: She's covered in bubbles, it's hardly the same thing.
G: We don't need her approval.
D: I am the owner of the store.
G: We are in charge of the campaign and the board is going to make the
final decision.
D: Well, fine, fine, fine, if you want to go with that old, tired idea.
G: I'm sorry, if you think you could do better, give it a try.
D: Well, given 5 or 10 seconds, I do.
G: Well, in that case, take the floor.
D: Hmm, let me think.
G: Well.
D: Hang on, just hang on...........(gasp) I've got it!
J: Let's hear it.
D: Take a hobo and he's all in tattered clothes.....forget it, that's not
a good idea.
G: It's not as easy as it looks.
D: Just give me a minute. We do a cardboard cut-out of Eleanor Roosevelt
in the tub. She turns to Franklin, and....I don't know. You're the ones
being paid to do this.
J: Deborah, why don't you just tell us what it is that you want?
D: Well, something....something else.
J: Something else, could you be more precise?
D: Something....different.
G: Oh, that's good, what do you think?
J: You know, I think she's onto something.
D: Very funny.
J: I'm serious. I think you should combine these two ideas.
D: Really? How?
J: Well, I think we should keep Eleanor Roosevelt, but I think she should
pop out of a cake!
D: I don't have to stand here and listen to this.
Deborah starts to storm out.
J: Deborah!
D: What?
J: The next time you have a good idea, call us.
D: Really!
Deborah storms out. Gwyn and Jeremy laugh.

Clay's office

Alex: Looks pretty good for a dead man, doesn't he?
Clay: (laughing) You think this is Cabot?
Alex: I know this is Cabot, and so do you.
Clay: He's been dead for years, Alex. When are you going to get it through
your thick skull?
Alex: So how do you explain this?
Clay: What? A photograph of an old man in a park.
Alex: Which happens to be Cabot Alden.
Clay: Looks like a homeless man to me.
Alex: You don't give up, do you.
Clay: Well, if you're so sure it's Cabot, why haven't you gone to the press
with it? Because they would laugh you right out of the newsroom, that's
why.
Alex: We'll see who's so smug tomorrow.
Clay: Give it up Alex, he's not in a position to bring you back into the fold.
Alex: I hope you have a parachute, because you're in for a long fall this
time.
Exit Alex.
Clay grabs the phone and dials.
Bill, this is Clay Alden.
Mr. Alden, what can I do for you?
You know what you're supposed to be doing for me. Why aren't you doing it?
What are you talking about?
Alex Masters was just here with a photograph taken of my father in the park.
You're kidding.
I thought you had your people out there looking for him.
I do.
Well they're not looking hard enough (Clay is screaming into the phone).
Now listen to me, I don't care what it costs. I want you to do whatever
you have to do to find him. Now.
Clay slams down the phone.

Ralph's Diner

Steffi: What are you talking about?
Cooper: The cook. The cook is my Uncle Cabot.
Steffi: Buddy?
Cooper: Okay. I'm going to go talk to him. Stay here. I'll be right back.
Cooper heads into the kitchen.
Cabot: Well, son, you look like you've seen a ghost.
Cooper: I have. You're supposed to be dead.
Cabot: Well, the work here's not easy, but it hasn't killed me yet.
Cooper: We buried you! God, what has Clay done? What's going on? Why are
you here?
Cabot: I'm here because I need a job. And becuase I like cooking, I always
have. Oh, son, I'm sorry, we don't have any more halibut. How would you
like a good piece of fried grouper.
Cooper: I don't want any fish right now.
Cabot: Suit yourself.
Cooper: I want to know what's going on here. Do you recognize me?
Cabot: Sure.
Cooper: Good.
Cabot: You're the young man that's in love with that pretty little lady
outside.
Cooper: What? No, no, I'm your great nephew.
Cabot: I'm afraid you're confusing me with someone else. I don't have a
nephew, great or otherwise.
Cooper: I'm not confused. I think you're the one that's confused. I'd
recognize your voice anywhere. You look a little different, but you don't
look that different.
Cabot: Now, son, I've got work to do. Besides, customers aren't allowed in
the kitchen.
Cooper: No, I'm not leaving until I know what's going on.
Cabot: Cooking's what's going on. Now, look, you just let me finish this
order and then I'll come out and talk to you.
Cooper: You promise.
Cabot: I promise. I'll find you.
Cooper heads out to Steffi.
Steffi: What happened?
Cooper: Something really strange happened. My Uncle Cabot is alive and well
and flipping burgers in a diner.
Steffi: Wait. Are you sure it's him?
Cooper: I'm positive. I...I...I...I, uh, he won't admit it, but I'm sure.
Steffi: Why would he lie about something like that?
Cooper: I don't know, maybe he's keeping it a secret, maybe he's nuts or
something.
Steffi: No, I knew that he looked familiar.
Cooper: You never met.
Steffi: No, but I've seen portraits of him at the mansion.
Cooper: Of course. This is so surreal. My great Uncle Cabot is wearing an
apron.
Steffi: No, no he's not.
Cooper: Yes, I just saw him.
Steffi: No, he's running down the street.
Steffi and Cooper head out running after Cabot.

Ralph's Diner

Gwyn and Jeremy head in the door.
G: It is a toy, Jeremy. Clay bought her a great, big plaything.
J: Forget about her.
G: She's intolerable.
J: Let's get a table.
G: She doesn't have any ideas of her own, but she's ready and willing to
shoot down ours.
J: I thought you handled her very well.
G: I'd like to handle her all right, with a shovel.
J: (laughing)
G: Can you imagine! Eleanor Roosevelt!
Menus are delivered.
G: Jeremy, this is a diner.
J: Yup.
G: Why have you brought me to a diner?
J: Because I wanted to take you someplace different.
G: I don't go to Harry's Burger either, but there is a reason for this.
J: Sweetheart, I want you to relax. I want you to forget about Deborah
and the campaign and everything.
G: And the diner's going to help me do that?
J: Uh huh. :)
G: Okay, I'm game, how?
J: We're going to do a little time travel.
G: Oh, of course, where are we traveling?
J: To high school.
G: So we get to recreate the past?
J: mm-hmmm. I'd like to pretend that I'm your first boyfriend ever and this
is our first date. How does that sound to you?
G: It sounds better than you will ever know. Okay, fill me in, how do we
go about this time travel?
J: First, you start by relaxing. Close your eyes and you focus on your
breating.
G: Slow deep breaths?
J: Seriously. Slow deep breaths, and once more. Forget about the past
and everyone in it.
G: Including the Aldens?
J: Especially the Aldens.

In the kitchen, Cooper is trying to get Cabot away from the grill.
Cooper: Come on, it's okay, we're just trying to help you.
Steffi: We're not going to hurt you.
Cooper: You don't have to be here.
Cabot: In that case, I'll be on my way.
Cooper: You're a big man in this town.
Steffi: You own a huge corporation and a really luxurious estate, and...
Cabot: Well, uh, what are you two, drug addicts? I'm a short-order cook.
Cooper: No, you own half of Corinth. All right, Number 1 Alden Lane.
Cabot: Is that supposed to mean something?
Steffi: That's the address of your estate. And you've got a limo driver and a
gardener and you've got...
Cabot: Look, if you'll excuse me, I've got a meeting with the President.
Cooper: No, look, Isabelle is back at the estate, so is your son, Clay.
Everything is going to be all right, just come home with us.
Cabot: No! I'm not going back there!
Cooper: What? So you admit that you are?
Cabot: Yes, I'm Cabot Alden. I own the corporation as well as the estate, but
I'm not going back to either one of them. Do you understand?
Cooper: Yes sir. Yes, but...
Cabot: And you will not mention this another person because if you do...
Cooper: If I do?
Cabot: I'll die all over again.
Cooper and Steffi just stare at Cabot.

At the mansion

Isabelle is looking through a photo album. She sees a picture of Cabot and
starts to cry. Alex arrives. They make small-talk.
Alex: Taking a little stroll?
Izzy: What?
Alex: Down memory lane.
Izzy: Oh, yes. When you get to be my age, that lane gets rather lengthy.
Alex: Can I be frank with you Isabelle?
Izzy: Of course.
Alex: I'm very concerned.
Izzy: Concerned, dear, about what?
Alex: You know I care about you a lot.
Izzy: Of course. I care too.
Alex: I appreciate that. The last time we talked you seemed to be a bit
anxious.
Izzy: Anxious?
Alex: I think I know why?
Izzy: I beg your pardon?
Alex: It's the cover-up. I'm getting very concerned about the effect it's
having on you.
Izzy: Alex, I'm afraid I don't know wh....
Alex: Isabelle, please. Let me help you. You've given me so much and now
it's my opportunity to give something back to you.
Izzy: I appreciate this, but I don't think that I really need any help.
Alex: I love him too.
Izzy: Who?
Alex: Cabot. I miss him, just like you miss him now.
Izzy: Well, of course.
Alex: Especially now, when he may need our help. (Alex gets the picture
out of the envelope.) I have another picture for your album.
Izzy: (gasp) Where did you get that?
Alex: It's him, isn't it? It's Cabot.
Izzy: How?

Ralph's Diner

Come on, you weren't really like that in high school.
Sure.
A jock?
Yeah. I lettered in hockey and track.
I had you figured for the glee club.
I was in the glee club, and the debate team.
Well, a regular Renaissance man.
What about you? Were you really that nerdy? Study, study, study.
No, I wish I had been more like that.
Why?
Because then I might have gone onto some Ivy League school and really made
something of myself.
You made something of yourself. You're part of the hottest ad agency in
town.
Yes, I am now, but look how long it took me to get here. I don't think you
really understand how long I depended on Clayton and that whole family.
Hey, hey, we're not going to talk about that.
I'm sorry, you're right. What would you like to talk about?
Right now, I don't want to talk about anything at all.
They kiss.
Part of a face edges into view in the windows. Dark hair. Dark glasses.
Spying. On what? We don't know.

At the mansion

Isabelle is looking at the picture of Cabot.
Izzy: (sigh)
Alex: Here you go. Are you all right?
Izzy: Where did you get this?
Alex: This picture was taken just a few days ago in the park. Now this isn't
the clearest picture in the world, but I would recognize that face and
that smile anywhere. It's Cabot, isn't it? Isabelle, if Cabot's still
alive, why is he sitting there alone in the park? Why isn't he here in the
mansion with you where he belongs?
Izzy: Please, Alex...
Alex: Am I right?
Enter Deborah and Clay.
Clay: Wait a minute, what's going on here?
Deb: What's that?
Clay: (taking the picture) I don't know, some man on a park bench. Do you
know him mother?
Alex: We all know exactly who he is.
Clay: No.
Cooper and Steffi walk in.
Coop: Alex, what are you doing here?
Alex: We found our mystery man. It's Cabot. (Alex shows the picture to
Cooper).
Clay: It's some bum in the park.
Alex: Really. (To Cooper) You tell me who this is?
Coop: He's right. This is not Cabot.
Alex: What?
Coop: I'm sorry Alex.
Alex: Sorry for what?
Coop: Leading you on a wild goose chase like this.
Alex: What are you talking about?
Coop: Alex, I made everything up. I'm very sorry. The Cradle Foundation,
everything. It was a stupid thing to do.
Alex: Cooper, why?
Stef: That's not true. He didn't make up all of it. It was my idea.
Alex: Why?
Stef: Because I was angry and I wanted to get back at Clay.
Alex: What's going on here?
Coop: And, as always, I was willing to help.
Alex: What are you doing? This is Cabot Alden! This is your great uncle!
Coop: I think I owe everyone an apology for getting you involved in this.
Aunt Isabelle, I'm truly sorry. And, Clay, I hope you can accept my
apology. (Clay shakes hands with Cooper).
Clay: That's very nice of you.
Coop: Alex, I also owe you an apology.
Alex: You come with me. (Alex drags Cooper out of the living room).
I want to talk to you. What are you doing in there?
Coop: I told you.
Alex: I'm not buying it.
Coop: Alex, I'm sorry to get you involved in this. It was a family squabble,
nothing else.
Alex: Don't do this, Cooper! Don't do this!
Coop: Do what?
Alex: Cooper, damn it! I'm this close, this close to nailing Clay. This is
Cabot! (shaking the photo) This is Cabot!
Coop: Cabot's dead.
Alex: No, he's not. And he's out there, and I'm going to find him.
Coop: Alex, Give It Up!
Alex: No.
Alex leaves. Cooper sighs.

Ralph's Diner

Cabot is cooking and singing away in the kitchen.
