First, an editorial comment...
It is *so* nice to have the *real* Isabelle back!!

LOVING Update for Friday, August 5:

STORYLINE: PARTY TIME!
           (location: Alden Mansion - Library)
* Clay is worried about the questions Isabelle will be asked tonight.
She responds to each quite easily (for example, saying that she came
back because the "season" in Florida is "long over" and that she didn't
tell anyone because she wanted to surprise everybody) and tells him to
 stop worrying.
Deborah breezes into the room, promising that the portrait will be back
up before the party starts. Isabelle tells her not to bother [could it
be that the show no longer has the old one around?]. Deborah is quite
shocked. Isabelle tells her, "Well, dear, why don't you change for the
party now? Perhaps a more flattering color...?" Deborah looks down at
her outfit, which is almost identical in color and style to Isabelle's,
and says, "Oh, yes, of course. If you'll excuse me..." She leaves.
Isabelle says the last thing they'd need is Cabot's face displayed when
he is "God knows where." Clay says they'll find him and deal with him,
"And I am going to take what is coming to me." Isabelle says you can't
"deal with" Cabot now -- he has changed.
* Clay says of course he's different -- he had a massive stroke and
almost died. He says he wanted Cabot to die with dignity. Isabelle
says everybody deserves that, if there is such a thing. Clay says that
if he had stayed in Corinth, he would have been attacked by the media
vultures; at least in Palm Beach, he was able to find some peace. He
just never dreamed that he would *live*. Isabelle says that it was a
miracle, and that she thanks God *every day* for that. He started out
being a little disorientied, and it never got better -- if anything, it
got worse, and he started going back in time. It isn't random, though,
he goes back to a *specific* time. Clay says that time is the time of
Cabot's father, and of the "family secrets." Isabelle says, "And those
secrets could be very damaging if they ever get out." Clay knows! He
says that Cabot had the presence of mind to get back to Corinth and to
write her a post card, so maybe he isn't spilling the beans yet. She
says he has talked to other people, though -- to doctors, nurses, the
guards, etc. She says that they usually figured those were just the
ramblings of a senile man, but "Cabot has a need to unburden himself."
Isabelle thinks the stroke affected his conscience, too. Suddenly,
 Clay looks very green.
* Isabelle is walking around the library, slowly, pondering things. An
item on the desk catches her eye. It is a *very* old photo of three
children in a silver frame. She picks it up. Very emotionally, she
says, "The sins of the fathers..." She is now almost in tears. "Oh,
 Cabot, where *are* you?"
Curtis enters and gives Isabelle a welcome home hug and kiss. Isabelle
thanks him. He sees that she is upset and asks what is wrong. She
says nothing is wrong -- it is just being back in the old house. "You
must miss him terribly." "I always will, and it's very hard to realize
that he is really *gone*." He puts his arms around his grandmother.
* [In the main room.]
The party has started. Clay and Deborah (now dressed in black) enter.
He reminds her to be careful. Deborah asks what she is going to say:
"Where is Cabot? Why is he not here tonight?" Clay doesn't think that
is very funny. He reminds her not to say anything about Cabot to his
family. She reminds him that it is *her* family, too. Clay says that
if she spills the beans, their next family reunion would be in prison.
Gwyneth tells Curtis that he is looking much better. Curtis says he is
feeling much better now that he is committed to his therapy. He just
worries about Dinah Lee. Gwyneth tells him not to worry about her.
"No matter what happens, you're not getting her back."
Clay asks Cooper what Tess is doing there. "I must have invited her.
Did I forget to ask _mein fuehrer's_ permission?" Clay says he has
warned her about prying into his affairs. Cooper says that it looks
like the only thing she is prying into is a glass of champagne. Clay
"suggests" to Cooper that he keep things that way. Clay exits. Tess
 starts walking toward Cooper.
Just as Tess is about to get to Cooper, he sees Isabelle and goes over
to her to give her a big hug and kiss and welcome her home. He says
things haven't been the same without her. She says the old house is
still standing, but Cooper answers that the foundation is a bit shaky.
Cooper asks what Isabelle thinks of the "newlyweds." Isabelle says she
was a bit surprised at first, but that Clay knows what he wants. "What
he *wants* or what he is stuck with?" Isabelle says she loves Cooper
very much, but that Clay is her son [but not Cabot's, let me remind
all of you --Bob] and she doesn't want him to say anything against him.
Cooper says, "All right, it's just that there have been a few things
you should know about." Isabelle says she doesn't question Clay's
judgment, and that Cooper shouldn't either. Cooper says, "All right."
"I *do* love you, Cooper, and I'm very touched by your concern for our
family." Isabelle kisses Cooper and walks away, leaving him a bit
 bewildered.
Deborah walks up to Curtis and apologizes for neglecting him. She says
that at this family gathering, she wants to get acquainted with all of
the Aldens, but particularly with him. He asks why, and she says it
is because of his recent difficult times. Curtis says it is getting
better. She says that if he ever needs a friend, she is there for him,
and he says she can count on the same from him. "So, how's married
life treating you?" She shrugs, and the camera pans to...
Isabelle tells Gwyneth that she has a bone to pick with her: why did she
leave Alden Enterprises when Isabelle left town. Jeremy pipes up that
it was his fault. He says he kidnapped her, and Isabelle says she has
to have a few words with him. Gwyneth points out that their agency is
working with AE on the anniversary campaign. Jeremy says that Gwyn's
brilliant idea was to focus the campaign on "Lady Alden Soap," the
company's first product. "Alden Enterprises then and now." From a
small company struggling to make it through the Depression to what it
is today. Gwyneth says they are thinking about putting Lady Alden Soap
back on the market as a tie-in. Clay storms in and says, "Definitely
 not!"
* Gwyn is shocked, saying that Clay has no idea what they have in mind.
He wants the company to go forward into the 21st century, not back to
the Depression. Gwyneth says that they want to show that the company
produced a quality product then and still does now. Clay says this is
not the time or place to discuss the campaign. "Dinner is about to be
served. Mother?" They leave. Gwyn tells Jeremy that he said it: if
she wants to be treated as an equal, stay away from Clay. Jeremy says
that was rude even for Clay. He is *shocked* that after all the time
they put into the campaign, he cut her off like that. He asks, "Why?"
Tess finally catches up with Cooper. They kiss. Tess senses that
something is wrong and asks what it is. Cooper tells her a little bit
about his talk with Isabelle. Cooper says, "I've got a feeling that
whatever Clay's up to, she's in on it."
Clay tells Isabelle that he wasn't too tactful with Gwyn, but that he
can't let them use that soap in the campaign. "If Cabot ever saw that,
it would remind him of everything he's feeling guilty about." Isabelle
suddenly realizes that he is right. Clay continues, "The '30s, his
 father, the whole dirty business."
I: "That's exactly why we should let Gwyn go ahead with it."
C: "Excuse me?"
I: "Lady Alden Soap would bring a great deal back to Cabot and, thereby,
might bring him back to us."
Isabelle walks away, leaving Clay a nervous wreck. He follows her out,
and we pan to the nearby Tess and Cooper, who observed the whole scene.

STORYLINE: CASEY GETS INVOLVED
           (location: Loft)
* Casey is shooting photos of some products on a table. He finishes the
roll of film, rewinds it and goes to change it. Tess tells him that he
has enough shots, but Casey wants more, to be safe. Gwyneth tells him
that she is getting tired, but Casey says he is just getting hot. Tess
sees that he isn't getting the hints, grabs him and pulls him away to
show him "the new layouts." Gwyn and Jeremy are leaving to go to the
family get-together at the Aldens. Gwyn thanks Jeremy for coming along
as her date, and he says he is going both because he doesn't trust the
Aldens...and because he can't stand to let her out of his sight.
Cooper enters. Gwyneth says she figures she'll see him tonight. Cooper
says yes, that he comes with the house. Gwyn asks what is going on,
with Isabelle back and planning a dinner party on her first night back.
Cooper simply says, "Stay tuned." Gwyneth and Jeremy leave. Ally asks
Cooper what *is* going on. He says he isn't sure, but *this* [he holds
up the roll of unexposed film] might be the answer.
* He tells Ally that he took pictures of a file in Clay's office that
might hold the answers, and he wonders if Casey would develop them.
Tess approaches and asks how he is. He says he'll tell her over dinner
at the mansion. He says, "[Isabelle is] back from Palm Beach and she's
ready to party so will you be my date?" Tess agrees to go with him.
She leaves with Jeremy and Gwyneth to get ready.
Ally says, "I guess you and Tess are still going strong." Cooper says
yes and asks why she asks. She says it is none of her business. "But
you couldn't help asking." "But you and Stephanie...?" Cooper reminds
her that he and Stephanie are friends and that's it. She asks why they
are spending so much time together, and he says that they are trying to
get to the bottom of this mystery. He turns to Casey and explains the
situation and asks him (as a huge favor) to develop the roll of film.
Casey refuses, saying he doesn't want to get mixed up in the Aldens'
affairs. Cooper says he doesn't have to get mixed up in their affairs.
Casey repeats no and asks what part of that Cooper didn't understand.
Cooper says Alex is helping them out and seems to think this is very
important. Ally tries to convince Casey, too, but no response. Cooper
stops Ally, saying he knows he has put them through a lot and doesn't
want to have him do something he doesn't want to do. He lays it on
very thick and finally, Casey (rather annoyed) tells Cooper to "Give it
to me." [Casey accompanies that line with a hand gesture that starts
Ally laughing, and the actress can't stop for a few moments.] Casey
says he doesn't want to deal with Cooper's attempt to lay a guilt trip
on him. Cooper "protests" but gives him the film. Casey asks for an
hour and tells him to go to a drug store next time. Cooper sneers. He
tells Ally that *he* now feels guilty. Ally says that developing a few
pictures doesn't mean he is involved. Cooper says he knows Casey works
his fingers to the bone. Ally tells him that he is right, and that the
house will turn out to be more expensive than they had thought and they
now have to hire plumbers, electricians, etc., instead of Casey being
able to do all the work. Cooper asks why she doesn't dip into the
account he set up for her and Tyler. Ally says that Casey doesn't know
about that. Cooper tells her to just use it. She asks what she is
supposed to tell Casey; Cooper says not to tell him anything: "Can't
 life be *simple*?" Cooper leaves.
* [In the darkroom.]
Ally, all over Casey while he works, says she has to leave to check on
Tyler. Casey says he will drive her, but she says she can't wait for
him to finish; she left Alex with a houseful of screaming kids. He
says he just needs a few minutes, and, while unbuttoning his shirt, she
says she can think of a better way to spend a few minutes. She says
that if he isn't working at the loft, he is working on the house, and
she is going to file for divorce on the grounds of neglect. Casey
turns to Ally and says, "OK, you win." As she completes the removal
of his shirt, he kisses her. As they proceed, the photo of Cabot on
the park bench, left in the developing fluid, begins to take shape.

STORYLINE: MY NAME IS CABOT
           (location: Ralph's Diner)
* Cabot enters the diner, followed by Stephanie. He says he is late for
work, but she persists in asking him what he meant by saying that he
was "more" than just Buddy. He tells her to stop yapping and she might
find out. That's why he brought her here -- to "his" diner. Stephanie
asks if he owns it, and he says no, he cooks there. She asks why he
was so interested in "that guy I was with." A car alarm goes off, and
Cabot dives under the counter, shouting "AIR RAID!" As Stephanie and
the other customers look on, Cabot tells Stephanie to "Get down, girl!"
* None.
* Stephanie runs behind the counter and tells "Buddy" to get up, that
there are no bombs. Cabot says he won't get up until he hears the All
Clear. A customer asks what is wrong, and Stephanie asks her to get a
manager. Janie comes out from the kitchen and says she'll take care of
it. She convinces Cabot that the "siren" is just a test. Just then,
it stops. They get up. She asks if he is OK and he says he is, a bit
indignantly. She says he had better get to work because Ralph will be
there shortly to perform an inspection. Cabot goes into the kitchen,
muttering something about them not caring if they live or die. Janie
says, "He's a little nuts but he makes a great burger." Stephanie,
*very* coolly, asks when she became a waitress. Yesterday.
S: "My goodness. You move fast, don't you?"
J: "Money runs out fast."
Stephanie calms down a bit.
S: "You were really good with Buddy. For a second there, I actually
 thought you cared about him."
J: "I *do* care."
S: "No, you care about yourself. So what kind of scam are you pulling?
What? Are you after his Social Security check or something?"
J: "How about getting off my case?"
Cabot emerges from the kitchen.
S: "No, I think the police should get on your case."
J: "Oh, please."
S: "You know, you'll do anything for money. You'll lie, you'll steal,
you'll cheat. God knows what your other talents are..."
J: "Look, lady, I don't know --"
Cabot interrupts the near-catfight.
C: "'The almighty dollar,' as my father would say. [Softly.] You want
to talk about lying and stealing? I could tell you some stories..."
* Stephanie says that Janie has taken a lot of money for lying. Cabot
asks if she has ever lied. "Yes, I've lied, but not her kind of lies."
Stephanie leaves. Cabot says that there are all kinds of lies: lying
to yourself [Stephanie disappears from the scene on that note], selling
yourself...? "You always think you can buy it back. 'The almighty
dollar.' You have all of the dollars, you have everything, you have
nothing. You're alone." Janie puts her arm on his shoulder: "Oh,
 Buddy, I --"
C: "There, you want to talk about lying? I like you. My name's not
Buddy. Something my father called me sometimes."
J: "So what *is* your name?"
C: "Cabot. I don't like it. I never have liked it. You call me Buddy,
 all right? I'm Buddy!"
Janie shoots him a "what a strange guy" look.
