LOVING Update for Friday, July 29:

STORYLINE: COOPER'S WRONG
           (location: Stacey's house)
* Cooper is outside, debating exactly how to tell Stacey his (incorrect)
assertion that Jack might still be alive. Stacey, of course, surprises
him at the door, saying that from him, person-to-person communication
is "novel. And here I just thought you came to my humble home to talk
 to yourself." Cooper laughs nervously...
* Now inside, Cooper is looking at a wedding photo of Jack and Stacey.
She enters, bringing some tea. Cooper observes that the two of them
were pretty happy. Stacey says they had their ups and downs like every
couple. Cooper asks how they met. At Corinth High. Cooper asks if
they were HS sweethearts. Stacey says no, she just had a big crush on
him then. Cooper asks what it was like marrying into the Alden clan.
Stacey says it was rough. He asks about any troubles with Clay, and
she says Clay was jealous of Jack because he thought Cabot favored
Jack over Curtis; that Clay always thought Jack was the "fair-haired
boy." Cooper asks why Stacey married Clay; she answers, "temporary
insanity." Cooper apologizes for bring it up and Stacey asks if he
came over to talk about Jack's death. "Not exactly." She asks why
he *did* come over. Cooper answers, "Not Jack's *death*, more like
Jack's *disappearance*." Stacey says, "Excuse me, are you saying that
Jack never died?" Cooper shakes his head "yes."
* Stacey, very annoyed, tell Cooper that he can stop playing games.
Cooper says he is sorry for upsetting her. She asks why he brought it
up, and he says he is doing research into the family history. He has
a short story to write for English next semester, and he was thinking
about writing about the Alden family history. She tells him not to
write about her dealings with the Aldens: it's very boring. He says
she is not boring. She says that if something *were* interesting, she,
as a writer, would have told it herself. Cooper says his idea is about
the whole Alden family. She tells him to forget about the Aldens and
just have a good time this summer, and to create his own history. She
says that she always had to remind Jack to not let the Alden life ruin
his life when he got caught up with AE. "It sucks them in, it drains
their blood, it embalms them. They don't even know it is happening."
She says Cabot *still* has a hold on the family; that all the Alden
kids feel that they have something to prove to him. Cooper says, "Not
me." He apologizes again for bringing all of this up, and Stacey says
that the "bad hurt" is gone. She says she still misses Jack every day
of her life. "The pain's gone, the fear's gone, but not the memories."
She says she still thinks about him lying next to her, and about the
fisherman sweater she couldn't get him to throw out and that he wore
on that final cruise. She remembers "so much" about the cruise: the
way he would look at her, and the last time he looked at her before
he went out on deck... Cooper, awkwardly, apologizes again, and Stacey
says it's OK, she likes remembering. "I was *loved*, Cooper. I was
really, truly *loved*. And, when Jack looked at me, especially that
last time, it was like -- I don't know, it's hard to explain. It was
like souls touching." She says he will find "that person" that will
make him forget to breathe and stop time for him. Cooper says that
he thought he was in love once, and Stacey says, "You don't *think*,
you *know.*" She says that once you have that kind of love, you'll
have enough to write about for a lifetime. Cooper just shakes his
 head "yes."

STORYLINE: BUDDY'S BACK
           (location: Ralph's [Diner])
* Cabot goes to Stephanie's table, asking if she is really going to eat
everything she ordered. The waitress says that her fries and garlic
bread are on the way, and she asks her to cancel them. Cabot asks if
he has seen Stephanie before; she says, "no, I don't think we've ever
met." Cabot remembers that he has seen her on TV, and Stephanie says
that she has only done some work in the papers. Cabot insists that he
has seen her on OPRAH: "You've got one of those -- what do they call
it -- eating disorders!" Stephanie just stares at Cabot.
* None.
* Cabot says he doesn't have much else to do these days but watch the
soaps and the talk shows. He says the talk shows have "extraordinary
people" and that he wishes he had watched such shows years ago, because
he has learned a lot about women from them. Stephanie says, "Really?"
"Oh yes: press-on nails, the G-spot, *faking* to please your husband.
And the fixation of women on weight. What lengths women will go to
to keep thin. They purge, and --" Stephanie interrupts, "I do *not*
have an eating disorder." Cabot points out that she has enough food
to "feed China." Stephanie says there *is* a problem and Cabot asks
if she wants to talk about it: "Come on, you can tell 'Buddy.'" He
 sits down at her table.
S: "Well, why not, Buddy? Everybody in town probably knows about it
anyway. I was dumped by the man I love."
C: "The *cad*!"
S: "Yes, that's exactly what Clay Alden is."
Cabot, very likely agreeing completely with that statement, straightens.
S: "You know, people warned me, they told me that this was going to
happen, but I was too dumb to listen..."
C: "Well, you have to be very protective when you mess with an Alden
 man."
S: "That is *so* true."
Stephanie says that 'Buddy' looks familiar to her. He changes the
subject, saying that Oprah says that food is a substitute for love.
She says she wouldn't know about that. Cabot says it isn't *much* of
a substitute, that it's better by phone. "Huh?" Cabot tells her to
phone somebody who cares about her. "Huh?"
C: "Don't be baffled, girl. This is the '30s. Get out of bed! Look
alive." Cabot gets up and leaves. Stephanie smiles.
* Cabot, back at the counter, sees a calendar. He says to the waitress,
"It is a joke! 1994? And I suppose Roosevelt has pulled us out of the
Depression and the whole world is hunky-dorey, eh?" The waitress just
 shrugs and walks away.
Cooper enters the diner and his eyes lock on Stephanie. She smiles at
him. Her waving becomes slow-motion as he re-hears Stacey's words:
"When you find that person who makes you forget to breathe, time, the
world, everything just sort of stops." He goes to her table and she
greets him, "Hi. Oh. What's wrong? Oh, you're mad at me because I
dragged you away from Tess. I know, I'm sorry." "What?" "I really
needed somebody to talk to, and you're the best friend I've got right
now." "Huh?" Stephanie says she has been screwy, but that's what
happens when you fall in love with the wrong man. "Stephanie..."
S: "But...you'll be happy to know I've decided I'm getting out of bed."
C: "What?"
S: "I'm moving on. I just hope I can find somebody as wonderful to me
as Tess is to you. Anyway, thank you for coming today. Oh! There's
this really neat old guy, you have to meet him."
C: "Who?"
S: "His name is Buddy. He's a hoot, you're going to love him. Now,
 where'd he go?"
No sign of 'Buddy' at the counter...

STORYLINE: BUCK'S SON
           (location: Rodeo Bar)
* Trucker can't believe Buck's announcement: "I'm an uncle?!  Why didn't
you tell me this?" Buck says he just found out.
* None.
* Trucker asks how he found out. Buck says Dinah Lee got it out of
him. She had to know everything about everybody he had ever been with
and she had tracked down Pam. Buck says he didn't know that Pam was
pregnant when he walked out on her, and that Egypt had held that over
his head when she was in town. He says he had no clue where Pam had
gone to, even though he hired a private eye. He found out that she
had been living with her parents and tried to hide the pregnancy for
as long as she could, but they kicked her out and now nobody knows
where she is. He says the kid should be a teenager by now.
B: "I aim to find Pam and that kid."
T: "And then...?"
* Buck says that he and commitment have never gotten along very well.
Trucker asks if that is changing. "Maybe." Buck says being a dad
before he was a husband wasn't part of the plan.

STORYLINE: PAPA DON'T PREACH and DINAH LEE'S DILEMMA
           (starting location: Rodeo Bar)
* Frankie and Charles enter. Frankie insists that he wants to hurry up
and donate his bone marrow because he knows it will save his mother.
[At the hospital.]
Angie is speaking to her lawyer. As Dinah Lee enters the room, Angie
says, "Michael, I want this will to be *absolutely* clear. I don't
want Frankie to be unprotected." Dinah Lee looks shocked.
* Michael says he wants her to take her time and look it over until she
is completely happy with it. He leaves.
Angie invites Dinah Lee into the room. Angie says she knows that Dinah
Lee heard what she was discussing. Dinah Lee says she knows that a
mother, especially a single mother, needs to keep her affairs in order.
Dinah Lee hands her some flowers. Angie tells Dinah Lee that she is
using her hospital stay as a forced vacation to catch up on paperwork.
Dinah Lee says she always has so many things to do, and Angie suggests
that she check herself into a hospital. Dinah Lee says she thinks she
will come up with another way to get things done.
Dinah Lee says that Angie looks so much better. Angie thanks her for
that. She asks if she *feels* better; Angie says she won't be running
in any marathons, but she gets to go home! Dinah Lee, surprised, asks
if they have to monitor the aplastic anemia, and Angie says they can do
that with blood counts. Dinah Lee asks about the drugs they had used,
and Angie says they were too hard on her so she is waiting for a marrow
transplant so she could "lick this thing." Angie says she is anxious
to get back to work. She asks how Pins is doing; Dinah Lee says it is
"a job." She says she gets a lot of kids in there, and that Frankie
comes a lot. Angie says that is good, just as long as he stays out of
trouble. Dinah Lee is surprised, but Angie says he got in with some
bad kids in San Francisco, and she wants to make sure *that* doesn't
happen again. Dinah Lee says Frankie will be just fine, and Angie will
 be right there with him.
[At the Rodeo.]
Frankie and Charles are now shooting pool. Charles asks how Frankie's
summer reading list is going. Frankie says, "It's OK. [Pause.] Page
sixty." Frankie takes a shot, and Charles gives him some tips about
a steady right hand. Charles asks about Frankie's job at the Agency.
Frankie says, "It's OK." Charles asks if he is learning a lot about
the advertising industry, and Frankie says no, more like the art of
moving boxes. Charles says he has to start somewhere. Charles gives
Frankie another pool tip, and Frankie says he doesn't need his help.
Charles says he is just trying to help out. Frankie wants to quit
playing pool; he knows what is going on: Angie wants him to have a
father figure, so this is nothing more than Male Bonding. "Burger and
fries, pool, insights on life." He says he doesn't need a father, he
had one, and he still has a mother. Charles says he doesn't have any
"particularly scintillating insights," so Frankie says that they can
"quit with this 'pal' routine." Charles says he doesn't think they
should do that; they're both going through something they don't know
anything about. Frankie acts surprised that there is *something* that
Charles doesn't know about. Charles says, "Come on, Frankie, cut me
some slack. Please. I don't want to be a father or a role model or
whatever you want to call it. I didn't *intend* to fall in love with
your mother, but I did and there's just nothing I can do about it."
Charles says that now that Angie is sick, this "love thing" has a big
dark shadow hanging over it. Frankie, apparently sincere for once,
asks him to tell him about it. "I don't know how to handle it, man.
I don't know what I should say to her son, what I *should* say...
Frankie, look, maybe you don't need me now. Maybe right now, I just
need you. OK? [No reaction from Frankie. Charles stands up.] Damn
it. *Damn* it. I just don't know what to do." Frankie stands up
and says, "maybe you can start by telling me how to line up this shot."
 Both smile.
* Frankie sinks a shot and the two of them celebrate. Charles suggests
that they leave to see Angie. They pay Buck and leave.
[At the hospital.]
Angie asks Dinah Lee to not mention the will and the lawyer when Frankie
and Charles show up. She agrees. Dinah Lee says she has been thinking
about putting her life in order. She says she thinks she and Trucker
need some time apart. Angie says she knows Dinah Lee thinks that he
hasn't let Trisha go, but she asks if he has shown any way that the two
of them could make it. Dinah Lee abruptly says, "Angie, I *really*
 have to talk to you."
* Frankie is telling Angie about his day with new best buddy Charles.
Angie says it is a real "man thing." Charles says Frankie may even
beat him some day. Frankie says he will beat him next game.
Dinah Lee enters. Angie asks how it went, and Dinah Lee says she hopes
she was a [bone marrow] match. She says she should be going, but she
thanks Angie for "arranging that other thing for me. And, remember,
noone is to know." Angie promises and tells her to take care of
herself. Frankie thanks her for getting tested. She leaves.
The doctor enters. "Charles, Frankie, I'm glad you're here. I have
the results of your blood tests."
