LOVING Update for Friday, July 15 (apparently originally scheduled
for Wednesday, July 6):

[After watching this show, maybe I shouldn't have done it by storyline,
because this update gets rather convoluted. Oh well, you get what you
pay for! (-: (-: ]

STORYLINE: TESS and COOPER at the party
           (location: Alden mansion - party)
* Tess asks Lenox if he has seen Cooper. He says he has not, but he'll
let Cooper know that she is looking for him. Tess storms off.
* None.
* Tess walks up to Cooper and says she hasn't seen him all night. She
says she was about to put his face on the back of a milk carton. She
tries to get him to leave with her, but he says he has to stick around
for some "family business." Stephanie approaches and Tess guesses that
*she* is the family business. Cooper says she's wrong, but Tess says
that's not the point -- she shouldn't have told him she loves him. He
asks why and she says they haven't seen each other since. Cooper says
she has to trust him, and the "family business" has absolutely nothing
to do with romance -- exactly the opposite, in fact. He asks her to
wait for him at Kate's and he'll explain everything to her there. She
says, "OK. See how *tough* I am?" "Oh, you don't have to be tough
with me." They kiss. She says, "See you later," and leaves.
* None.

STORYLINE: UNCLE HARRY'S PREDICTIONS
           (location: Alden mansion - party)
* Ava is still frantic about Uncle Harry's prediction that somebody is
coming home. She decides it must have something to do with the Aldens.
Then, she says that Uncle Harry said something else. Alex says, "Harry
was a bit of a chatterbox up there, wasn't he?" Ava says that Harry
also said that something was going to tear this family apart. Alex
asks if he was talking about the Aldens. "Yes. [Pause.] I think."
Alex is disgusted, because he was sure she was over this and yet it
doesn't look like she is going to get over it any time soon. Alex
takes a deep breath and announces his new strategy: "If you can't
beat 'em, join 'em." Ava smiles...
* Ava asks Alex if he is beginning to believe in "the other side." He
says he's not, but since she does, and she's not going to rest until
this is "seen through" to the end. Alex says he is going to try and
find out if there is any validity to this "other side" stuff. Ava
 hugs him ecstatically.
Wendell and Mrs. Barnes enter. He shakes Alex's hand, saying it is
strange seeing two Clay Aldens at the same time. Alex tells him that
"it's just plain Alex Masters now." Wendell continues, telling Alex
that he was a damn good CEO at Alden Enterprises. Alex modestly says
that is all in the past. They leave (Ava wishes them a happy 4th of
July). Alex says he wishes they wouldn't have brought that up. Ava
says she thinks about those days sometimes, especially when they are in
that house. She says they had some good times as "Mr. and Mrs. Alden."
* After Deborah leaves, Alex asks if the little bride is not feeling
well. Alex says, "No trouble, I hope." "Not at all. Why do you ask?"
Alex says he has heard a rumor that something was shaking up the Alden
family. Clay says his family is none of Alex's business. Alex says he
wants nothing from him, let alone to *be* Clay again. Clay tells them
that all he has is the fortune, the mansion... Alex says he can have
all of that. Clay thanks him and says he hopes they can remember how
to find their way out of his mansion. He leaves. Alex looks up and
says, "Oh, Harry, you might be on to something here!" Alex notes the
defensiveness in Clay's speech, but Ava says not to let him bother you.
Alex says he really doesn't miss being Clay and all of the trappings,
but he thinks Ava does miss it. She reminds him that she said they
*had* some good times. He asks if she is sure about that, and she
says she is. They kiss. Alex leaves to say "good night" to Cooper.
Ava opens up an American flag fan and smiles.
* None.

STORYLINE: GRAND THEFT AUTO REVISITED
           (location: Alden mansion - inside)
* Gwyneth herds Janie and Frankie into a room and asks them to start
talking. Frankie tells her about the incident at Belden Pond, when
Janie took the money from Cooper and ran, and when he caught up to her
to ask what was going on, she just fed him "a bunch of bull." Gwyneth
asks how this has anything to do with her car. Frankie says he was in
Boston when they brought Janie in, and, by the way, the police there
 are still looking for her.  Gwyneth starts to ask "Jane" a question;
Frankie corrects her, telling her that she goes by "Janie." Cooper
enters and asks, "'Janie?' What happened to 'Tyra?'" Frankie asks,
"Whoever she is, what does she have to do with you?" We fade to a
commercial with a close-up of Janie, squirming a bit.
* Cooper drags Janie out to a balcony. He tells her that her conning
days are over. He asks how she found out about Clay and Deborah. She
says that when she first got to town, she had no place to stay. She
broke into the loft and overheard Cooper talking to Ally about them.
She apologizes and says she'll give him back the money and get out of
his life for good if he will help get those two off her back. Cooper
says that he'll help those two put her in jail. As Cooper looks down,
he sees Clay and Stephanie kissing. Meanwhile, Janie tells him to go
ahead and call the cops. Cooper turns back to Janie and says that he
is going to save her neck, but she is going to owe him "big time."
 They re-enter the house.
[Inside.]
Frankie asks Gwyneth why she let Cooper and Janie leave; he says she'll
just get away again. Cooper and Janie enter.
F: "You two have a nice chat?"
C: "We straightened a few things out."
F: "Well how about straightening us out, huh?"
C: "Gwyn knows most of the story. I met Janie here through the Big
 Brother program..."
F: "You and --um-- *Tyra*, right?"
C: "The reason she gave a false name... Janie, why don't you tell them
why you gave a false name?"
J: "OK. Um... Well, when I first heard his name was Alden, I figured
he was related to you, and I didn't want to have to tell him about the
 stolen car."
G: "Well, I should think not. It would have made your stay at _Corinth
 Towers_ a bit short-lived."
J: "Oh, but it wasn't the money. I really, really liked him, and I
wanted him to get a chance to know me before I told him about the car
or Dr. Hubbard or any of it."
C: "Dr. Hubbard? What happened to Dr. Hubbard?"
F: "Oh, come on. Catch up, Coop. Your little sister here mugged and
 kidnapped my mother in Boston."
J: "No, my boyfriend did that -- I mean, my *ex*-boyfriend, by the way.
I never want to see him again. I was the one who brought Angie to the
hospital, who saved her life. Just ask her!"
F: "You had her as snowed as you got big brother here."
J: "I know I have done a *lot* of dumb things, but I want to turn it
around. Your mother said that she would try and help me, that's why
 I came here."
F: "Funny you say that. I haven't seen you around the house."
J: "I met Cooper before I had a chance to see her."
Janie and Frankie are nearly face-to-face now...
F: "Uh-huh. Cooper and his wad of bills?"
J: "Look. I know I blew it, by stealing his money and everything --"
F: "But what? It just 'came natural,' Janie?"
J: "Yes! [Pause.] Oh, sure, it is just fine for you to just stand
here and trash me, but you try living the life sometime and you see
what kind of a damn boy scout you'd be."
F: "Well, you know something? I wouldn't have turned into some two-bit
 con artist."
J: "Well, I *want* to get straight. I swear I do. I just --"
C: "It's OK. It's OK."
J: "I just don't know how."
C: "You didn't have to steal the money. I would have given it to you,
 Janie."
Janie is crying. Cooper hugs her. Frankie is beside himself.
F: "WHAT? I don't believe this!"
C: "Frankie, please. I think you've done enough."
F: "Don't tell me you're falling for this act."
We get a shot of Janie, trying to compose herself.
* Cooper asks if it would kill them to give her another chance. He says
he will take full responsibility for her. Frankie asks if he is brain
dead. Cooper asks Gwyneth if she will drop the auto theft charges.
Gwyneth, a bit surprised, says she'll have to sort this whole thing
out. She leaves. Frankie still can't believe it -- he can't believe
Janie has both of them snowed, and he can't believe that they got so
rich "being so damn dumb." Cooper asks if Frankie will let him handle
this. Frankie wishes him "lotsa luck" and leaves.
Cooper tells Janie that he was impressed with the "real tears" but that
she can cut the act, because the audience is gone. She says it wasn't
an act. Cooper asks how stupid she thinks he is. Janie says he can
believe her or not, she doesn't care. She says she wishes she never
came there and that she just wants to "get out of this lousy town."
Cooper says they have a deal: she does something for him and he does
something for her. She says she can't do anything for him. Cooper
says she can do *a lot* for him, and she is going to start tonight.
"Now here is what I want you to do."
* Janie is waiting outside. Frankie enters from behind, sneaks up on
her and yells, "Gotcha!" Janie jumps, then says she is tired of him
sneaking up on her. Frankie says he can't keep away from her. Janie
suggests that he try. He asks what she is doing out there, and she
says Cooper told her she could take a look around, "do you mind?"
F: "I mind everything about you."
J: "That is tough. Would you just get away from me, please?"
F: "I still can't figure it. It's like, a smart guy like Cooper being
taken by a phony like you."
J: "Figure it out on your own time."
F: "[Laughs.] Must be a real sucker for a pretty face."
J: "I didn't know you cared."
F: "All I care about is you getting out of town."
J: "[Smiles.] Don't trust yourself, huh?"
Frankie lets that comment slide.
F: "And don't bother saying 'good bye' to my mother, OK?"
Frankie leaves. After a moment (during which time Janie seems pretty
proud of herself), Stephanie enters. (See Stephanie/Cooper storyline.)

STORYLINE: SECRET -- NOT!
           (location: Alden mansion - party)
* As Stephanie looks on from a distance, Clay and Deborah are talking.
Deborah, getting increasingly tipsy from the booze Cooper slipped her,
suggests to Clay that he enjoy himself a little more at the party. He
tells her not to worry; he's having a great time. The only thing which
would make this party better would be if Clay's "illegitimate daughter"
showed up. Deborah says that he has no illegitimate daughter, and that
Cooper is only trying to trick him into telling him their secret, but
he's not going to find out. Clay, looking a bit sickened, tells her
 how "charmingly girlish" she is.
Stephanie approaches and asks if they have seen Cooper. Deborah says
that he is probably poking around in closets, and she is surprised that
Stephanie isn't there with him, holding a flashlight. Deborah asks
Stephanie if she became Cooper's partner in crime just to make her life
miserable, or does she have a crush on him?
* Stephanie says she has no crush whatsoever on Cooper. Deborah says he
would be very good for her. "I mean, at least he's single." Clay is
furious and escorts Stephanie away from Deborah. While she whines that
nobody has a sense of humor any more, Clay tells Stephanie to ignore
her mother. Stephanie says she is sick of seeing her cling to him.
She says their marriage is insane. Clay tells her that she is right,
but she and Cooper *have* to stay out of it. He asks if she was in on
his latest scheme. Stephanie says that the girl came to them, claiming
to have the dirt on him. She held out for money, and Cooper gave her
some before she would tell them anything. Clay ponders that...
Clay: "Stephy, if you have any feelings left for me, please stop all
this and convince Cooper to do the same."
Stephanie: "I *do* have feelings for you. I have feelings for you.
Look, I'm not trying to make your life more difficult than it already
 is..."
C: "Then please stop."
S: "OK. I'll stop. One one condition."
C: "What?"
S: "Just admit to me that you're in this marriage because my mother is
holding some threat over your head. I *know* she is."
Clay ponders *this*...
C: "All right. It's true. What she has on me could destroy me. That's
why I can't tell you or anyone else about it, and that is also why this
has to be our last conversation on this subject. Do you understand?"
S: "Thank you for trusting me."
C: "Well, this has been really rough on you. And I love you for it."
They kiss...
* Tess approaches Deborah and asks if she has seen Cooper. Deborah is
glaring at Stephanie and Clay, who are still cuddling. She says, "No."
Tess decides to have a little fun with this, saying that now she knows
why Deborah tried to keep her away from Cooper (to give Stephanie a
chance to get close to him) and now she sees why! Except that her plan
didn't work! Cooper walks by and Deborah points him out to Tess and
says that the two of them deserve each other.
After we see Cooper talking to Tess (q. v.), Deborah approaches Clay
and says she *saw* that little scene! Clay asks if she is a spy.
Deborah, increasingly tipsy, reminds Clay that if he embarrasses her
in any way, he will regret it, and that is a promise that she will
keep. Clay asks, "Do you know how disgusting you are?"
[Across the patio.]
Cooper: "Making any headway on the big secret?"
Stephanie: "I just know that there *is* one."
C: "Uh-huh. The way you and Clay were going at it, I'd have thought he
dropped everything, up to but not quite including his pants."
S: "Excuse me, but you're the one who told me to get close to him in the
 first place."
C: "I didn't ask you to dive down his throat, did I?"
No reaction, except that Cooper looks like he is sorry he asked...
C: "Looks like 'Mommie D' could use another drink."
S: "Oh no, Cooper, she doesn't need any more liquor. She can't handle
 it. Look at her."
C: "That's what I'm counting on. *Lenox*?"
Lenox: "Yes, sir?"
C: "Hit Mrs. Alden again."
L: "With pleasure, sir."
Lenox crosses to Clay and Deborah and offers the drink. She takes it and
thanks him. Clay says, "Sure, drink yourself silly."
Alex and Ava approach. They thank Clay and Deborah and tell them that
they are leaving. Clay says it was good seeing them again. [Huh?!]
Deborah says, "I'm very happy that you could come, Mrs. ... uh ..."
Ava says, "Masters." Alex says, "And Mr." Deborah apologizes and asks
them to excuse her. She walks inside. [Continued under Alex/Ava.]
* Outside, where Janie (as Tyra) is standing...Stephanie asks what she
is doing there. She says she knows Janie has nothing to say to them.
Janie says she has *lots* to say. Stephanie says she can _say_ it to
the police. Janie says she was scared to talk about it before because
Clay Alden obviously has some influence around here. Janie says she
is risking her neck to tell Stephanie this. Stephanie asks, "Tell me
*what*?" "What Clay did to me. How he used me, the way he hurt me.
The same way he is using you. And if you don't get out fast, you'll
get the same." Janie leaves in a hurry. Stephanie calls after her,
"Wait, where are you going? Tyra?"
[On the patio.]
Gwyneth is getting a drink. Clay approaches and asks where she went.
She says Frankie found the girl who stole her car. Clay asks if she
has called the police and Gwyn says no, that she's young and she has
had a miserable life, and she is considering dropping the whole thing.
Clay asks how many times she can let a person off the hook. Gwyneth
asks what he has done now, and he says, "Nothing. Just follow the old
Alden Code Of Honor: family first and foremost, everything else last."
Gwyneth says she is worried about him, but he says he can take care of
himself. She says that is just Alden pride, and he quotes the song,
"They Can't Take That Away From Me." Clay offers to walk Gwyneth to
 her car, and they leave.
Cooper enters and goes to Deborah, who is half-sitting, half-laying on
a chair. He asks if she is all right, and she (in a rather strange
voice) says she is not. He asks what is the matter. "Everything.
The party was a disaster, and then somebody piked my crunch. Or they
spiked my punch, I don't know. I'm just -- I'm sick." Cooper asks
who would do a thing like that.
D: "Lenox. Lenox did it. He just kept bringing me all kinds of drinks
I didn't even ask for. But he's going to get hers [sic]. You'd better
believe it. [*Sigh.*] Oh, why does everybody hate me so much?"
C: "Oh, they don't."
D: "Yes they do!"
C: "Is there anything I can do for you?"
D: "You could try to like me. Or do you think that's impossible?"
C: "Maybe not."
D: "What would I have to do? Would I have to lay myself down at your
 feet?"
C: "Why don't you just try trusting me a little. [Big smile.]"
D: "[Laughs.] Trust you? Oh yeah, you want me to tell you about Cradle
and me. Well, I have nothing on him, nothing at all. He married me
 because he loves me."
C: "I believe your other half is named Clayton, not Cradle."
D: "Cradle? Where did you hear that?"
C: "You just said, 'Tell me what I have on Cradle.'"
D: "Oh, I didn't say that. I don't even know what I'm saying, I'm so
drunk. I can't even think straight. [She gets up out of the chair.]
Oh, Cooper, just forget everything I said, all right? Just *please*
 forget --"
Deborah passes out in Cooper's arms.
C: "Cradle?"
