LOVING Update for Friday, January 20:

STORYLINE: STREET SMARTS?
           (location: Angie's house)
* Angie and Charles are laying on the couch, kissing. She says, "That
was nice." He tells her that she should take days off more often. She
points out that _he_ has been working double shifts since Alex left the
police force. "Not by choice, I assure you." She asks how much time
he has left: eight minutes. She asks if he *has* to go to work today.
Yes, so "hurry up and relax." They smile and resume kissing. Angie
pulls up and asks what if she would vouce for the citizens of Corinth?
Charles says she doesn't have that kind of "juice." She says they are
all good, decent people. Charles says she should see the rap sheet on
some of those good, decent people. Angie, persistent, says, "There'll
be no crime today, I promise. [...] The people of Corinth do not
require your services today, but I do." They kiss again.
* Charles says he had better get going. Angie suggests to him that they
both quit their jobs and buy a cabin in Vermont. He asks if she would
be bored. No, she says, she could garden and he could fish. Charles
asks about Frankie. Angie says he'll be in college soon. He asks if
she is serious; she answers that at this moment, she can't think of
anything better. She says that he could be a forest ranger; he answers
that she could doctor sick animals. They laugh as he gets up. She
asks if that would be such a bad life. He answers that he would be
happy just about anywhere with her. As Charles puts on his shoulder
holster, Angie says that at least he wouldn't have to wear that thing.
She says she hates it. He says he knows, but it is part of his job.
"Let's just say it's my stethoscope." She says a stethoscope *saves*
lives. He asks if she wants him to face the bad guys unarmed. Angie
says that is what scares her most -- that he has to face them at all.
She says they should get rid of them all. "Look at England." Charles
says a nightstick and a whistle wouldn't do the job here. Angie says
that Frankie told her that some kids are carrying guns to school now.
"They are actually talking about putting metal detectors at the doors!"
Charles answers, "Yeah. It's about time."
* Angie asks if they have found guns at the high school. "No, but it's
just a matter of time." He says kids are carrying, but they haven't
been caught yet. She says this is *Corinth*. He says she would be
surprised how many weapons they find on kids, but she shouldn't be:
they get gunshot victims at the hospital all the time. She says those
aren't the kids that go to school with Frankie. "Believe me, they do."
"God, they're just kids. Innocents." "Innocents?! Come on, baby,
they're blowing people away. And why? For their sneakers, maybe a
jacket, maybe because somebody said the wrong thing?" Angie says maybe
they just carry because they're scared. Charles says he doesn't care
why, they're breaking the law. Angie says, "That's understanding."
She says he should look at the causes behind the problems. Charles
says they should just put the punks away.
A: "I can't believe you just said that."
C: "Yeah, well that's what I'm saying, because that's how I feel.
That's why I got into law enforcement in the first place."
A: "I beg your pardon?"
C: "Baby, I told you this before. I was going to law school. I was
planning to get married, get a job with a big firm: partner on Park
Avenue, 2.5 kids. Had it all laid out. And one day, I'm sitting with
Clarissa. Sittin' in my car. <Bam.> Stray bullet. She's dead. Some
drug deal gone bad. Baby, you of all people should understand how I'm
feeling. Jesse was killed the same way."
A: "I know exactly how you feel, Charles. We just have different ideas
on how to handle the problem."
C: "I'm sick and tired of hearing about how these kids are victimized by
economics. A bad home, all the stresses of life..."
A: "A lot of times, it's the truth."
C: "Well, I don't care! Baby, people I know don't deal in guns and
drugs. The ones that do, baby, I don't want to know."
A: "I think you're being totally irrational--"
The door bell rings. Angie goes to get it. It's Ally.
* None.  [See below.]

STORYLINE: STEPHANIE'S DAY AT THE HOSPITAL
           (location: hospital emergency room)
* Cooper carries Stephanie in, calling for a doctor. One approches and
asks what happened. Cooper says she passed out and has been coughing
up blood. He lays her on a stretcher. He tells the doctor that she is
bulimic. He says it is probably a tear, probably a [Mallory-Wise?] and
calls for Tony, a gastrointerologist. He calls for some X-rays. He
asks what her pulse is: 140. Cooper says, "My God!" The doctor says
that is to be expected. He asks for some blood and a saline IV, and
they wheel Stephy off while Cooper follows, telling her she'll be OK.
They take her into a curtained-off area and stop Cooper from entering.
Outside, Cooper (practically in tears) says, "I love you, Stephy."
* Cooper, "reading" a magazine, sees a nurse. He asks if she is out of
X-ray. Yes, the doctors are with her now. He asks to see her. Not
yet. He asks if she is conscious. "I don't believe so." She says
they'll tell him something when they know something. The nurse leaves.
Deborah enters and asks how she is. Cooper gives her the basics but
moans that they aren't telling him anything. Deborah tries to reassure
Cooper that she will be all right. He says he doesn't want to leave
her again. Deborah says he doesn't have to leave her. "No, maybe I
don't, if you'll help me." Deborah asks how. "By telling the police
everything. Deborah, you have to confess."
* "Confess? Confess to what?" "To running Clay down." Deborah says
she has no idea what he is talking about. Cooper drags her into a
waiting room and closes the door. He says her confession is the only
way she can help Stephanie. Deborah asks how that will help her.
Cooper says his deal with Clay, keeping him out of jail, forbids him
from being with Stephy. He can no longer do that, so Clay is going to
throw him back in jail and take Stephy for himself. Deborah says she
will never go back to Clay. Cooper says that's not the point -- the
point is that he can't help her if he is sitting in jail. Deborah
says that Clay won't change his story. Cooper says he won't once she
confesses. "I know you did it. Now, if you love your daughter, and
I think you do, you'll tell the police everything." Deborah says she
thinks there is another way. She has been watching Clay carefully.
She says she saw something which she knows she can use against him
sometime. Cooper asks what she is talking about; she tells him to
trust her. He says she is only trying to save her own skin. "That is
not true." Cooper shouts, "That is absolutely true. You're the most
self-serving individual I have ever met, and I am sick of it!" Deborah
again asks for some time. "We don't have any more time, Deborah!" He
screams at her to leave. The doctor enters and reminds Cooper that he
is in a hospital. Softly, he apologizes and asks how Stephanie is.
* The doctor takes Cooper into Stephanie's room, then he and the nurse
leave. "Hey, Steph? How you doing?" Stephy opens her eyes and says,
weakly, "Hey." He asks how she is feeling. Better. She asks if this
is emergency. Yeah. She asks what happened. He tells her that she
passed out on him. He says she has a tear in her esophagus, but that
she will be OK. "Can I get out of here?" Cooper tells her to stay
 until she is better.
C: "Listen, Steph, there's so many things I have to tell you, and I--
I love you. I love you so much, and I'm so sorry about everything..."
 Stephanie shakes her head no.
S: "Cooper, please."
C: "You believe me, don't you?"
S: "I want to."
C: "OK, you will. Listen, I know how confusing these past few months
have been, and I'm so sorry about that."
Stephanie tries to interrupt, but Cooper asks her to let him finish.
 Deborah enters, unseen.
C: "I'm going to explain everything to you. Everything. OK?"

STORYLINE: END OF THE "LINE"
           (starting location: Ad agency)
* We see Ally pull the vial of drugs out of Casey's camera bag again.
After she stares at it for a few seconds, Casey enters. He asks her
where she got that. "Where do you think I got it?" Casey says it's
not his. Ally says she got it out of his camera bag. Casey says, "No,
Ally, that's impossible. Hey, that is *not* mine. It-- I haven't
been-- Ally, that's not mine. You've gotta believe me." Ally just
 gives him a blank stare.
* Ally asks how he could do this. "I didn't!" "I told you I would
leave you. How could you risk everything?" He tells her to hold on.
She asks if it is her. She asks what she is doing wrong. Casey tries
to quiet her down, but she continues, asking what it was he was trying
to tell her about the pressures. "I wanted to know how hard it was
for you to stop doing this." "Yeah, it has been hard, but *that's not
mine*." He tries to explain. Ally says that all he is going to tell
her is that he's using drugs again. He protests again. She says she
found the vial in the camera bag again. [And so on, and so on...]
She accuses him of lying to her. He says he hasn't touched that stuff
again. She asks how he expects her to believe him. She says she wants
to believe him. He urges her to do so. She wails that she has to
think about Tyler. He says of course she does. He says that when he
got ahold of the drugs before, it was a wake up call for him. "I'm not
stupid. Why would I ever do something like that again?" She says that
Tyler found it in his camera bag before and so did she now. He says he
didn't put it there...then realizes what must have happened. "Danny
was here. He's this dealer. He-- I didn't ask him to come here."
Ally says she thought he got his drugs from friends, and how he has a
*dealer*? He says he didn't want it. Ally doesn't believe him. She
shrieks, "Stop lying to me!" "I'm not lying. Ally, please--" Ally
storms out. Casey says to himself, "It's the truth."
* [At Danny's apartment.]
Danny is reading, laying on a bed. Casey knocks on the door. He asks
if Casey noticed his sample. "Yes, I did. [He throws the vial at
Danny.] What the hell's the matter with you? Why'd you put that in
my bag?" "A simple thank-you would do." Danny says it was a gift.
Casey says he didn't want it. "Danny, you ruined my marriage." He
tells him about Ally finding it, and reminds him that he has quit!
Danny laughs. "Is something funny?" He asks if he never enjoyed it,
if it totally messed up his life. Danny continues, "Let me ask you
something. Has it ever helped you?" "Helped me?!" Danny asks if it
ever sparked an idea when he needed one, if it kept him up all night
when he needed that. Danny says, "My old man used to say, 'As a man
thinketh within himself, so he is.' I think that's true. I bet you've
done some of your best work on the stuff, right?" Casey says that's
none of his business. He says his wife is going to leave him because
of this. Danny says that if she does, she never loved him in the first
place. He says she's just a little "freaked out," and he's under a lot
of pressure at work, so he needs a little stimulant every now and then.
It isn't as if he uses it every day. "I don't need it." "Exactly. So
if it helps you out every now and then [he holds the vial out], I say
go for it. You can take it or leave it, right? Whaddya say? It's on
the house." Casey's resolve seems to be wearing down a bit...
* [At Angie's house.]
After some small talk, Ally asks Angie how her wedding plans are going.
Angie says she knows she didn't come by to ask about the wedding. They
sit down. Angie says, "Talk to me. What's up?" Ally reminds Angie
about her "friend" who "experimented" with drugs, and that Angie made
such a big deal about it. She says Angie made her feel like anyone who
does drugs is an addict. Angie says it would have been irresponsible
if she had just said he would be OK. She says that people respond
differently to drugs -- doctors are very careful about that when they
prescribe drugs, and on the street, you never know what you're getting.
She says you have to look at why the person does drugs in the first
place; it's usually a symptom of a bigger problem, which is why there
is no such thing as "recreational" use of drugs. Ally says she thinks
her "friend" may be hooked on drugs. Angie gives her a hug. "Angie,
I don't know what to do. I want to help him." "I know. It's hard."
"I love him so much." "Casey loves you, too." Ally just holds Angie
 tighter and sheds a tear.
[At Danny's apartment.]
"Go on. Take it, it's yours." "It's mine?" "That's right. Don't say
I never gave you anything." Casey snatches the vial. "Thanks. I'm
sorry. [He opens the vial.] Would you mind if I just--" "Go ahead."
Casey sprinkles the entire contents onto his wrist. Danny says that's
quite a bit. "Yeah, I guess maybe you're right." He turns toward
Danny and blows it off of his wrist onto the floor. "HEY, Casey! What
are you doing?" "Returning your favor." Danny says he just blew $200
onto the floor. Casey says maybe he should be more careful not to drop
it into someone's camera bag in the future. Danny tells him to get out
of there. "Don't worry, I'm leaving. And you're going to leave me
alone, do you understand? If I so much as smell you near me, I'm going
to call the cops." "Don't threaten me, Casey." They start shoving
each other. Someone bangs on the door. "Police! Open up! We have
a warrant." Danny runs to the window and leaves via the fire escape.
Casey tries to brush the powder off of his jacket. The cops bust the
door down, guns out. "FREEZE! Don't move." Casey puts his hands up.
The two uniformed cops start looking around. Charles steps forward
and asks Casey what he is doing here. "Nothing. I just --um--" One
of the cops returns with a couple of grams of cocaine and an ounce of
marijuana. The other cop starts to handcuff Casey. "Where's Roberts?"
"I don't know. He went out the window, I think. I don't know."
Charles sends them to check that out. He goes to Casey and completes
putting on the cuffs. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything
you say can and will be held against you in a court of law. You have
the right to an attorney. If you can not afford one, one will be
provided for you by--" "Charles! Please. Don't tell Ally. She'll
leave me. Please don't tell her. Please?"
