Wednesday on "the city":

In his apartment, Jacob remembers the accident that
killed his wife and son. He's remembering the hospital
where the nurses kept him from being with his badly
injured son. Angie comes over and asks what's wrong.
David, Jacob says. He got this letter about his son.

In their apartment, Nick says this is the party to end
all parties. Loraine tells him to stop. Nick says how
many guys get to headline their own wake? Loraine wants
to know what the joke is.

Coming back to her apartment, Alex asks Jocelyn what's
the rush? She has to beat the pizza guy. They were
having fun, Alex says. If they had any more fun, Jocelyn
says, the neighbors would have complained. Jocelyn is
worried about telling Ally. They go in and find the note
from Ally. She's in the bar, Tess is singing, and she's
good...and good things come in small packages. Jocelyn
sees teh package, and she gets her 7% share of the
building. The phone rings. It's Tracey. She wants to
talk to Jocelyn, right now! Jocelyn says she'll be in
her pffoce tomorrow by nine. Tracey says don't hang up.
Dial tone.

It's a check for $15,000, Angie says. Why? It was David's
college fund, Jacob says. They didn't have the money for
the hospital, but he wanted to give him everything. David
would have been 18 years old. He misses him so much, Jacob
says.

Nick says hasn't she heard about showing a man friedship
when he's alive, and not celebrating when he's dead? Loraine
blows up at him. This is killing her. It's like a knife in
her stomach. He can have his party, and she'll smile, and
she'll pretend that this is not the end of her world, too.
But, she can't take it. She just can't take it.

Alex, reading the document, says looks like she, and some
of her friends, and one bossy lady, are the owners of this
building. She wants to check this out. Sydney never just
gives things away, Jocelyn says. Alex wants her to stop
working. Maybe they should go hear Tess sing, Jocelyn
suggests. No, Alex says he's heard her before. He kisses
her. Jocelyn thinks they should talk to Ally about her
moving out. The pizza will get cold, Alex says. They kiss.
They're still kissing when there's a knock on the door.
They ignore it. Tracey comes in and Alex and Jocelyn break
apart. Tracey laughs, and says Alex Masters! You never change.

Tracey always thought the world was round, then he dissapeared,
and she figured he fell off the edge of the world. Tracey
Quartermaine, Alex realizes. This must be the lady on the phone,
Jocelyn says. Tracey owns 51% of the building Alex asks?
Jocelyn says they must know each other. It was a long time
ago! Alex says. Not that long ago, Tracey says. Tracey says
that Alex worked for her father at ELQ. Corporate Espionage,
Alex says. Tracey says she wants to sell the building as soon
as possible. Jocelyn says that won't be easy, she has
partners, herself included. Tracey says MINOR partners.
Tracey sends Jocelyn to get the real estate agent's name and
number. When they're alone Alex asks Tracey what she's really
doing here. She evades his question and tells him that she's
in the hotel and she invites him to come over, they can
trade war stories and he can show her his scars, and she'll
show him her...Jocelyn comes back. Tracey leaves, and thanks
Jocelyn for hanging up on her, or she never would have met
Alex again. Jocelyn closes the door and tells Alex to go on.
Alex says she's trouble. Big trouble. Outside, Tracey says,
Alex, yum.

Nick tells Loraine that she thinks he's laughing at death,
but if he doesn't smile, he's afraid that he'll lose it. He
knows this is hard on her, but he needs her and that scares
him almost as much as realizing that he's dying. Loraine
admits that she's afraid that she'll let him down.

Jacob tells Angie that he bought a bond, and added to it
consistently for 8 years. They talk about the things that
Jacob'll never have the cahce to do...like his first little
league game, his first girl friend; losing a kid is so
empty. Angie says she wishes that there was something she
could do. Jacob says he misses him. He misses him calling
Daddy, Daddy.

Jacob appologizes to Angie for putting her through this.
She says she understands he wants to be a father as much
as she wants to have his child. But she can't. Jacob says
he understands, and he is content with that. She mentions
that Joe Martin knows about some experiemental techniques
where infertile people are having babies. Jacob says he'd
never put her though that. But, Angie says, if they could
have their own child...Jacob says that they're newlyweds,
why doesn't she slip into something so he can deal with
her. She leaves. Jacob looks at the letter and says "Oh,
kid." Angie doesn't look happy.

Nick asks what are they going to do with each other?
Loraine asks what are they going to do without each other.
Nick says miracles happen, even for an old geiser like him.
Loraine says that this is the real thing, she's not going
anywhere, she's gonna be strong. She offers to lock up.
Nick tells her not to ber too long. She goes to the cabinet
and takes a drink.

So, who are the Quartermaines? Jocelyn asks. A rich family,
Alex says. And Tracey? Well, her father is her bigest enemy
and her biggest fan. What she is denied, she takes anyway,
Alex says. And what about you, Alex darling? Well, he's not
going to lie to her. They had a thing. A brief thing, he adds.
Jocelyn saw the way she looked at him. Alex says did she see
the way that he looked at Tracey? How was that? Jocelyn asks.
Like a man who wanted to be with the woman he loves. He
kisses Jocelyn. We have a winner, Jocelyn says.

Back at her apartment, Tracey says she hates it when some
men get better with age. Oh, Alex. There is a knock on the
door. It's hotel management. Seems her corporate card was
cancelled. When he called the corporation, he was told that
she had passed away. Ha! Tracey laughs. Does she look like
someone that has died? Well, no, management says. This will
all be cleared up and the bill will be paid - tomorrow,
during business hours, Tracey says. She closes the door on
the manager. Well, she says to herself. They did it. They
cut her off. No money, no place to live. Well, we'll see
about that.
