THE CITY Update for Friday, August 9:

STORYLINE: WATCH AND LEARN
 (location: Jared's "inner sanctum")
* Richard, apologizing for being late, lets Alex, Tony and Ally in.
They are in awe. Alex asks what's with the monitors -- "What was he
watching?" Richard turns them on. "He was watching _us_."
* Richard tells them that not only was he watching them, he was taping
them! Alex asks where the tapes are. Richard says he's sorry, but he
destroyed them and the recording equipment when he found out about this
hideout. He says Jared also had a camera in Sydney's apartment, but
she had it removed. Ally asks why he was watching them. Richard says
he knows why Jared watched Sydney, but not why he watched the rest of
them. As he and Tony are putting on rubber gloves, Alex says it was
probably to keep an eye on them so that he could protect his investment
behind the wall, but it doesn't matter: "Whatever he knew about who he
was watching, it obviously wasn't enough." Richard asks why that is.
"Because one of them most likely killed him."
* As Ally shoots pictures, Tony expresses his frustrations that they
haven't found anything. Richard asks exactly what they are looking
for. Alex says they aren't sure, but their theory is that whoever
killed Jared is responsible for the rest of the things going on in the
building now. Richard says Jared was a lot of things, but he wasn't
stupid, and he doubts he left a "bloody stained glove." Ally tells
Alex that she has taken pictures of the desks and monitors, what else
does he need? As they decide whether they are done there, Richard
looks at the monitor shooting the City Bar, and sees Zoey...
[Later.]
Richard turns off the monitors and says he has to go. He tells them not
to bother locking up; he doesn't care if the place burns to the ground.
He says he's sorry they didn't find anything. He leaves.
Ally says this gives her the creeps: Jared watching them the whole time.
Tony says he missed the good stuff: he got "bumped off" before the two
of them got together. Ally says she's going home now and if she finds
a camera there, "it's gone." Tony tells her not to do that: he might
want to come up there and check her out every once in a while. Ally
and Tony wrestle for a moment, then they kiss. Alex suggests that they
continue this across the street. As the three of them walk out, Alex
notices a piece of paper on the ground. It's a page from a datebook:
June 21, the day Jared was killed. Alex shows it to Ally and Tony.
 It says, "What a masquerade."
* Tony says he doesn't get it. Alex says it might have been a person.
Maybe someone wasn't who he thought he was. "And they had something
on him," offers Ally. So they killed him to keep him quiet, concludes
Alex. Tony doesn't buy it: maybe someone went to a costume party.
Besides, even if they're right, how does this help? Alex says it
narrows their list of suspects down. Tony asks how. Since he only
had cameras in 212 Greene Street, someone who lives there, or is there
a lot, must have killed him. OK, says Tony, then we'll do the same
thing Jared did: we'll watch the people in the building.

STORYLINE:
(starting location: First floor of the stairwell)
* Richard enters the elevator, and Zoey follows him in. She says she's
going to get something to eat. "_Bon appetit_," says Richard, who
walks away. She invites him to join him, but he says he is late for
another appointment. Zoey sighs and goes into the bar.
[In the City Bar.]
Zoey expresses her frustration to Lorraine. Lorraine tells her that
Richard is trying to send her a message: "When are you going to pick
 it up?" "Never!"
* Lorraine points out how she worked so hard to get rid of Richard, with
the Thorn Birds scenario and all. Zoey says she doesn't need a plot
summary; just get back to the tarot cards. "Yes, of course, Zoey."
Lorraine glances at the cards, then exclaims, "What a surprise!" Zoey
asks what. "They say you're lying your little butt off, sweetheart."
[Later, while Richard is watching.]
Steve, a bartender, is talking to them. Lorraine says that Zoey's heart
belongs to another; he can read about it in the paperback or rent the
video. Zoey, through clenched teeth, says that'll be all. Steve
leaves. Zoey asks her to get off her case. Lorraine says she won't
do that until she *solves* her case. Zoey admits again that she made
a mistake. "Madame Lorraine" says that she hears all and sees all,
and she can tell she's lying. Zoey tells "Madame Lorraine" to get her
radar checked, because there's nothing more to it. Lorraine just can't
buy that for three months, he was the wrong guy, and now she can't live
without him. Zoey says she just realized that Richard wasn't the guy
she thought he was. Lorraine says she'll second that.
Steve comes up and asks Lorraine for some help. They leave. Zoey
flashes back to receiving the letter on the set, when she told Richard
 that her father wasn't Nick.
Lorraine comes back and picks up the cards. No, says Zoey, don't do
that; it's just that this voodoo stuff gave her the creeps. Then let's
burn my dolls, says Lorraine. Zoey asks if they could just move to a
different subject...maybe that new bartender. She asks if she should
go out with him to get back at Richard. Lorraine picks up the cards in
complete frustration and goes up to the bar, telling Zoey that she has
met all kinds, but she takes the cake. Zoey, following her, asks her
what she should do, since she sees all and knows all. "Grow up, Zoey!"
"Could you be more specific?" She tells her to quit playing games.
Zoey says she tries, but he keeps running away. Lorraine advises her
to get him someplace where he can't run away. "What am I supposed to
do, tie him up and--?" They both smile. Zoey calls "Madame Lorraine"
a genius and leaves to hatch her plan; as she leaves, Zoey tells her
 *not* to burn the dolls.
* None.
* [At Richard's apartment -- a new set?]
Richard enters, flips on some loud music, and opens his mail. He hears
a noise and gets up quietly. He grabs something (a pipe?) from the
wall and goes into the kitchen. He leaps into the doorway to his
bedroom, ready to attack, and sees Zoey, dressed in -- his sheet.
[The only decent outfit they've ever chosen for Zoey.]

STORYLINE: WORKING GIRL
 (location: Penthouse)
* The doorbell rings. Sydney opens it (without looking through the
peephole, naturally) and invites Jocelyn (who is carrying a box) in.
Sydney tells her that she meant to call her -- she tried to call her.
Jocelyn says she can't stay long, she just came to give Sydney her
papers. "Your next lawyer is going to need them." Sydney says that
there is no need for her to do that now that Danny is out. No, says
Jocelyn, I won't be representing you or anybody else any more.
* Sydney asks if she isn't overreacting; people have short memories.
This is going to blow over. Jocelyn asks if she remembers blackmailing
her -- threatening to tell everyone her secret to force her to stay on
as her attorney. "It wasn't an idle threat." Sydney says she can't
blame her for holding that against her-- Jocelyn says that for all
intents and purposes, her career as an attorney is over. Not as far
as I'm concerned, says Sydney; even if worst comes to worse and you
are disbarred, I will still want you with me. She is even willing to
back it up financially. Jocelyn starts to feel around Sydney's body.
Sydney asks what she is doing. "Checking for attached strings."
[Later.]
Sydney promises her that there are no strings attached. Sydney tells
Jocelyn that she is one of the best attorneys she has ever worked with,
and she doesn't care what the press or the bar association have to say.
Jocelyn asks for that in writing for her scrapbook. Sydney asks why
she is turning her down. First reason: Jocelyn would be completely
indebted to her (Sydney knows she isn't getting another offer like this
for a very long time). Second reason: Jocelyn thinks this offer has
more to do with her brother than with her talent as an attorney. Syd
says that's ridiculous. Jocelyn says she knows they had a relationship
and that if they had anything to do with Jared's death, she'd want to
keep it quiet. "This doesn't have anything to do with Jared." Sydney
says she is very suspicious. Not suspicious, cautious, especially when
it comes to Danny. Sydney says that what Danny did was very brave, but
just because he was willing to sacrifice himself doesn't mean that she
 should do the same.
* Jocelyn says that giving up a job doesn't compare with what Danny did
for her. But that doesn't mean she has to make the sacrifice, and she
isn't just talking about the job. Sydney says it is obvious that Alex
is in love with her (Jocelyn protests that that's none of her business)
and she thinks Jocelyn is going to do the same thing to Alex that she's
doing to her: turn him down. "I wouldn't count on that. I am very
much in love with Alex." Sydney says that even so, she's going to find
a way to mess it up. She will convince herself that he doesn't love
her; that he is acting the way he is because he feels sorry for her,
or maybe that he just respects her because of what she did for Danny.
Jocelyn says that was pretty close to her life story. "Look, you've
 obviously been through hell.  But Jocelyn, it's over.  Danny's free;
your father can't hurt you any more; Alex loves you. Why don't you
take this chance for happiness and go with it. If you don't like the
job, _quit_!" Jocelyn laughs that she'll probably blackmail her into
staying. Sydney says she never does the same thing twice, then smiles.
"OK. I accept. On one condition." "What?" "I don't know exactly
what happened between you and Danny--" "Jocelyn, I have told you--"
"I don't expect you to tell me right now. I just want to know that
when they find out who killed Jared, I'm gonna want to know the truth.
That a deal?" "Deal." Sydney welcomes her back aboard and hands her
the box. Jocelyn thanks her for pulling her out of the water, takes
the box and starts to leave. One more thing, though, says Jocelyn.
She says that Sydney's personal life is none of her business, but she
thinks it would be best for everybody if she and Danny don't continue
to have a relationship. Sydney asks if she thinks she really wants to
"revisit that scene." "Reassure me." "It's over, OK?" "OK." Sydney
suggests that they get together tomorrow to go over things. "My time,
as you very well know, is yours." Jocelyn gets to the door and thanks
Sydney again. "Thank *you*, Jocelyn." Sydney closes the door and lets
 out a heavy sigh.
[Later, at Ally/Jocelyn/Molly's apartment.]
Jocelyn enters the dark apartment, balancing the box. She turns on the
lights and walks to the answering machine, smiling as she passes the
 balloons. She plays the messages:
"Hey, Joss, it's Alex. Remember me? Listen, I'm sorry about the
clowns. Next time, I'll send over some ballet dancers. [Jocelyn
laughs.] I don't know, maybe you hate ballet, too. I'll get it
right sooner or later. I love you." Beep.
"Miss Brown, this is Harriet Adams, I'm with the _New York Post_. I was
wondering if we could do an interview. I promise it'll be sympathetic.
I admire you very much for what you did--"
Jocelyn fast-forwards to the next message.
"How about opera singers? [Jocelyn laughs.] Where *are* you? I love
 you." Beep.
"Hi, princess. It's daddy. How's my special girl? Thought I was
 gone, didn't you? Happy now?"
