Somehow my VCR got turned on, so it didn't tape the City on Tuesday or
Wednesday; I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a quickie synopsis
of what happened (I gather Zoey talked to Nick, Jocelyn talked to her mom,
and Sydney talked to Richard). Fortunately it did tape Thursday, so on
with the update:

Thursday, April 25, 1996 in the City:

As far as I can tell, it's the morning after the big night (Nick's concert,
Ally-the-non-hooker's encounter with Tony-the-non-john). Our storylines
today:

A FREUDIAN FIELD DAY I: SYDNEY'S SECRET/THE CHILDREN OF NICK
============================================================
Jared wishes Sydney a good morning, but soon foregoes small talk in favor
of his favorite subject, Richard's parentage. Jared claims to be smpathetic.
Sydney doesn't believe that Jared is capable of sympathy. He assures her
that he does care about her, in his own way; in fact, she's probably the
only person he's ever really cared about. Sydney vows that she is going to
tell Richard, and then Jared will lose his control over her, his leverage.
At this point Nick arrives and demands to talk to Sydney alone. Jared was
just leaving for a meeting, anyway (see below), but he congratulates Nick on
being a "new father." "Zoey Rivers," Jared chuckes on his way out the door.
Nick cuts right to the chase, and asks Sydney why she wants to bust up Zoey
and Richard's relationship. Cleverly trying to change the subject, Sydney
pretends interest in his conversation with Zoey, which apparently went fine.
Syd asks if he believes she's his daughter? None of your business, Nick
retorts, and tells her to answer his question. Syd just thinks they shouldn't
get too serious. Nick asks why. The reasons should be obvious, Syd says,
not realizing how dangerously close her foot is getting to lodging itself
in her mouth. Nick presses, and Syd, narrowly missing kicking herself in the
nose, cites Richard's good education and breeding. Nick bristles at her
intimation that Zoey isn't good enough for Richard. Syd denies that she
thinks that; it's just that they're from different worlds. She seems amused
by Nick's parental feelings towards Zoey, and asks again if he believes her.
It doesn't matter, Nick says, Zoey and Richard have a good thing going, and
I'm not going to let you break it up. Nick leaves. Sydney laments to Maria
that everything is a mess, and she's the only one who can fix it...

Meanwhile, Jared is meeting with Malcolm. Jared's tense. Malcolm inquires
if it's Sydney that's bothering him, and Jared informs Malcolm that his
personal life is none of Malcolm's business; they're here to talk about
acquiring Tess' agency. Malcolm says Tess' balance sheet appears sound,
but if you look deeper, she's a bit overextended; if it wasn't for Azure,
Tess would be drowning in the red, but Azure is making her a fortune.
"Then we get rid of Azure," says Jared, but Malcolm is way ahead of him.
He's already got people digging up dirt on her, and promises that if they
don't find any, they can make it up. Jared asks about Tess' $100,000 that
he invested for her, and Malcolm assures him that she'll take a big loss.
Jared has to run. But we're not done, says Malcolm. This is simple, Jared
says; get the agency, get what's there, and get out. What about Sydney, asks
Malcolm. That's my concern, not yours, says Jared. He goes back upstairs
looking for Sydney, who has left. Maria won't tell him where she's gone,
but does tell him that she didn't leave with Nick...

At the same time (busy morning!), Richard and Zoey are at the clinic talking.
He wants to talk about her big night with Nick. Zoey notices that he looks
worried. Richard won't tell her what's bugging him, but she presses. He
claims at first that it's just that he wanted to get away with her and she
wouldn't go, but eventually admits that he's afraid she won't need him any
more... he's not exactly afraid of being replaced, but he does realize that
things will be different from now on. She won't be all his any more; he knows
it's selfish, but she was his little secret, because no one knew how great
she was, and he had her all to himself, and now he has to share her. Zoey,
who apparently has no problem with being referred to in the same vein as a
playground toy, says he's wonderful. Richard is beginning to realize that
he has no idea what he'd do without her, and it's a new and scary feeling.
Zoey promises that will never happen (soap opera kiss of death); even if she
finds a slew of relatives, he's the one. They start to kiss -- clothing
starts to come off -- and Sydney, who has just arrived at the clinic, hears
panting and grunting from inside and starts to open the door...

A FREUDIAN FIELD DAY II: HOOKING IN YOUR ROOMMATE'S (YOUR UNCLE'S GIRLFRIEND)
PLACE FOR YOUR UNCLE'S PARTNER, WHO IS ALSO THE EX-FIANCE OF YOUR BEST FRIEND
WHOSE CHILD HAS THE SAME FATHER AS YOUR CHILD, AND WHOSE ROOMMATE (THE PARTNER,
NOT THE BEST FRIEND) IS YOUR ROOMMATE'S BROTHER, WHO YOU ONCE ACCUSED OF RAPE,
AND WITH WHOM YOU WERE BRIEFLY HOT AND HEAVY / A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ALLY
==============================================================================
Jocelyn is one the phone with her mom, who is apparently recovering, and
promises to see her soon. After she hangs up, she tells Ally about her mom's
suicide attempt. Ally hugs her, and apologizes for not being here. It's okay,
says Jocelyn, Alex was with me. Jocelyn talks about how nice it was; they
talked, about how she feels about Malcolm (hates him), about her childhood and
why she now has problems. She didn't tell him about being a prostitute, but
she did tell her mom, and that's what led to her try to kill herself. But at
least I'm not crazy, Jocelyn says, something did happen to me, and my mom knew
but couldn't face it or do anything about it. You must have had quite a night,
too, Jocelyn says. Ally's confused. Jocelyn holds up the red wig, and asks
her if she went to a costume party. Ally fesses up, shocking Jocelyn big time.
Are you nuts? Jocelyn demands to know. Ally asks what she was supposed to do.
Ignore the message? Jocelyn suggests. Ally couldn't do that, because it wasn't
just any john; it was Tony. Tony? asks Jocelyn, why? Because he's starting
to figure everything out, says Ally, shocking Jocelyn again. If Tony tells
Alex, my life is over, panics Jocelyn. But he's not going to tell Alex,
because the hooker wasn't you, Ally points out. Jocelyn thinks Tony must
surely have recognized her, but Ally promises that she disguised herself and
her voice, and assures Jocelyn that there's no way he recognized her; they're
in the clear. Jocelyn sighs that she had no idea that things would get so
complicated. Ally promises her that everything will be all right, and leaves.

Alex shows up at Tony's. Tony was expecting it to be Danny, because he never
came home last night. Tony wants to talk about Jocelyn, but Alex says he
already knows. Tony's surprised, and asks him how he found out. Alex says
he was there when she got the call from her dad. "Boy, he's a piece of work,"
says Alex. Tony surmises that Alex doesn't know about Jocelyn's night job.
Alex tells him about Mrs. Roberts' suicide attempt, but that she's going to
be okay. Alex asks how it went with the hooker, and starts to pack up the
recording equipment to return it, since it didn't work. Tony tells him there
wasn't much to hear, she didn't know anything. Alex asks if it was Malcolm's
regular girl. She said she was, Tony says, but he felt like she was hiding
something. Alex asks if he thinks Varoushka might be pulling a fast one on
them, thinking they wouldn't know the difference if it wasn't Malcolm's girl.
Maybe, says Tony, and promises to get more information out of her the next
time he interrogates her. Alex is kind of glad the recording equipment didn't
work; if it did, he wouldn't have been here when Jocelyn needed him. Tony
realizes that Alex still has feelings for Jocelyn. Alex admits that he does,
even though she's been nothing but trouble. Tony tells him it might be worth
saving. Alex says he thinks he might be in love with her. Tony asks if he
told her? No, Alex says, but it might have been different if I had...

Ally is getting her mail. Tony asks her to come have coffee with him. Ally
makes excuses; Tony says he thought she really wanted to hear about his big
date...

... while Alex knocks on Jocelyn's door. He wants to talk seriously; he was
talking to Tony, and he doesn't know how to say this... but he doesn't spit
"I love you" out before Jocelyn outs with "you know, don't you?"

Curbhanger (since we know she won't tell him this time, either...)
