Sorry this is so late... and next week's probably will be, too, since my
thesis is due on Friday. So, if anyone feels like trying an update this
Thursday, let me know. Anyway, without further ado...

Thursday, March 7, 1996 in the City:

AROUND THE BAR
==============
Tess comes into the bar to bring Buck some flowers, to apologize for yelling
at him about chasing her secret admirer away. Buck asks "what's the catch?"
Nick wanders over to get a club soda, and comments on the flowers, saying
Buck can't stay mad at someone who could scare up flowers like that in the
middle of the winter in the city [actually, they lookes strictly supermarket
variety to me, but whatever]. Buck still wants to know what Tess is really
after, but she insists she has no agenda. With my luck, Buck comments, I'll
probably turn out to be allergic and drop dead. Nick says his luck will soon
change; Nick will be packing 'em in. Buck's skeptical, and remarks that, now
that Nick seems to be telling fortunes too, between him and Lorraine, he's
employing half of the Psychic Network. Buck goes to help a customer. Nick
asks Tess if she bought anything yet with her $100K. Tess decides she should
buy him something nice, since he didn't have to get the cash for her; he had
the urn. Nick says he was already rewarded, in sort of a karma-like way. He
did her a favor, and then someone did him a favor. He produces a plane ticket.
A producer wants him to fly out to L.A. and perform a set of his new stuff
for him; he sent the guy a tape, and the guy wants to fly him out and all.
Tess tells him to knock 'em dead... and speaking of dead, Tess wants to talk
about Jared. Tess asks Nick to come have some fun with her; she's going up
to Sydney's press conference, probably on their favorite subject. Nick doesn't
look interested; Tess can't belive he could stand to miss it.

Buck's customer turns out to be Larry Brown, of the Dallas Cowboys, who's in
town for business and has heard about all the hot, happening music at the City
Bar, so he came to check it out. He goes to play some pool, and leaves not
too long after (Tess and Nick are still having their conversation). He
recognizes Nick, saying his great-grandma is a big fan, and leaves, never
explaining why he expected to hear music in the middle of the day and left
after 15 minutes. [Does anyone know what the point of that was? Just stunt
casting? Whatever...]

JAMES AND JACOB AND ANGIE AND LORRAINE...
=========================================
Jacob has found Lorraine a customer who wants her to help him decide what kind
of new car to buy. She says she has a doctor's appointment. Jacob's concerned
there's something wrong, but [alas] there isn't, she's just going to visit with
Angie (see below). She gives him a kiss on the cheek, which James sees. He
and Jacob give each other the evil eye for awhile. James finally comments on
Lorraine, saying maybe he should get her to read his fortune. Jacob says
James' future will be bright, as long as he stays out of other people's bus-
iness. James says he can't help it, he's a people person. Jacob wants to talk
about the particular people James is interested in. James says he doesn't
tell people what to do with their lives; Frank's decision to change his name
was his own, all James did is support him. Jacob is grateful to James for
saving Frank's life... Rahib, James corrects him... anyway, Frank/Rahib isn't
the issue , says Jacob, who else are you interested in getting with? James
says he's interested in being a voice in the community. Jacob isn't talking
about politics. James says everything is politics. Jacob wants to know why
James is always lurking around his world, especially around Angie? James
spouts his line about Angie being a remarkable woman, and a role model to
young African-American women. Up on your soap box again, Jacob remarks. James
wants to know why Jacob gives him attitude every time he tries to tell him
where he's coming from. He also says that Angie is the mother of his good
friend F/Rahib, and he'd like to get to know her better. Jacob says he has
lots of reasonable explanations, but none of them are true. James pretends not
to get it. Jacob spells it out; Angie's grateful to you for saving F/R's life,
but nothing more.

At the clinic, Angie sends her last patient off with a prescription, and her
assistant home for the day. She primps her hair for Lorraine's visit, then
realizes that she's being silly. Lorraine shows up. They pretend they're
glad to have this chance to chat, since they haven't had time since Lorraine
arrived in the city, what with the business with the bomb and all. Lorraine
expresses that she's glad Frank is all right. Angie stumbles into their talk,
saying she was surprised to hear Lorraine was from New Orleans; she's awfully
far from home. Lorraine knows Angie's wondering why she didn't run home with
her problems. Angie stammers... Lorraine says the old Lorraine would have,
but after her experience with AA, she now feels in control of her destiny.
"I noticed," Angie comments. They get some coffee. Lorraine says the old
Lorraine would have had a field day boozing it up the last few months. Angie
says she's proud of her. Lorraine says she's grateful to Angie and Jacob.
Lorraine makes a toast: "to old friends and new beginnings." Angie wonders if
New York is the right place for Lorraine to make her new start. Lorraine sees
through this particularly transparent comment, and asks Angie what's on her
mind. Angie says she's concerned about Lorraine working in a bar. Any bar,
or this bar? Lorraine asks. Does it matter? asks Angie. Lorraine says she
was a bit concerned herself when Jacob suggested it. This was Jacob's idea?
asks Angie. Who remembers, says Lorraine, the point is she likes the job, and
the challenge of facing temptation every day and not giving in. Angie wonders
what her AA sponsor thinks. Lorraine says she can make her own decisions.
Angie thinks living with temptation can be rough. Lorraine says she's up for
it. Look, if you have a problem with me... Angie interrupts her, saying that
now that she and Jacob are together and planning their lives, there will be NO
more problems [soap opera kiss of death]. So, both of us are telling the future
now? asks Lorraine. Angie says she can predict her own, because she's going to
make sure that things happen the way they should. Lorraine says Angie shouldn't
worry about her, she feels no pressure; working in the bar, with Jacob, feels
right. Angie looks un-thrilled.

Lorraine goes back down to the bar, and is sitting at a table. When Jacob comes
up, she starts acting all upset; she can't do any readings right now, in fact,
what she wants is a drink. Jacob asks what brought this on? Nothing in par-
ticular, says Lorraine. You talked to Angie, right? says Jacob. Lorraine
begins to weep, saying she thought she and Angie were close, she thought she
could count on her... Jacob's confused, and tells Lorraine she can talk to him.
Lorraine's expression turns conniving when Jacob isn't watching. [If Jacob
doesn't realize he's being played, he's a bigger moron than I thought...]

SYD TELLS RICHARD THE TRUTH, MOTHER AND SON BOND, DAD SPIES
===========================================================
At the penthouse, Richard wants to know why she dragged him up there right now,
yammering about a matter of life and death. He makes a few smart remarks, but
the smirk is wiped off his face when Sydney tells him that Jared's dead.
Richard's all concerned about when it happened, where, is she okay, what can
I do? Sydney says she's fine, she's called a press conference to announce it,
but she wanted him to know the real story. She makes him promise that it's
off the record, because if it got out, she'd be in big trouble. Richard asks
if she killed him; no one who knows Jared would blame you. Sydney says no,
and he's been dead for some time. She tells him about her and Samuel keeping
him "alive." Richard can't believe Samuel made all those phone calls. He
was quite a good Jared, wasn't he, Sydney says. Richard asks if anyone ever
told her she's quite strange? Sydney knows it sounds strange now, but it made
perfect sense at the time. Richard has to hand it to her, everyone bought it.
Sydney says it was such of a house of cards anyway, then Tess stole the urn.
Richard's shocked to hear that one. Why do you think we were suddenly best
buddies? Syd asks. Richard's amused at that one. Sydney knows she's vul-
nerable; if word got out, not only would the merger be dead, but the cops
would be at her doorstep. Why, Richard asks, do you think they'd think you
did it? Sydney says Chase International is a public company, and she didn't
tell the stockholders about the CEO dropping dead. Richard comments that it
was easier when they didn't have to answer to stockholders. Anyway, Syd says,
it's time to lay things (including Jared) to rest. Richard says if he was
to go on the air with this, no one would believe it anyway. Syd reminds him
of his promise. She asks him if he's mad. Richard says it would have been
fun to be in on it from the start. Fun? Syd asks. Richard says she's one of
a kind. He picks up the urn, and observes that it seems empty. Don't know
if she tells him why, because the next scene has her telling Richard the game
plan for the press; she's going to focus on the memorial service, and where
the company will go from here, not the specifics of his death. Richard offers
to act as a reporter and help steer the conversation that way. Sydney wants
him to act like a son -- she wants to announce the creation of a new music
division, and also to announce that she's bringing her son into the company
to learn the business from her, so that she can one day turn it over to him.
Richard's shocked that she would want him, after all they've put each other
through. Sydney says this is a night for new beginnings. They hug... as
Jared watches on the monitors...

Cliffhanger!
