ROOTS: THE CHICAGO YEARS

The Blue Parrot - Tracking down a lead on his mother's past, Tyrone
returns to the blues club to find a musician who might have known Artie
(the guy who wrote the letters to "Satin" that Ty found with his mom's
estate). Toni shows up, dressed to the nines [pretty provocative for
someone who's not trying to lead the guy on, IMHO] but shying away from
Ty's affectionate greeting [what a tease!]. He tells her he was unable to
find any trace of his mother's old neighbor Mrs. Gentry. Toni reveals
she'd had better luck using cop resources - she'd found and talked to the
woman, and has a lot to report. Mrs. Gentry lives in a nursing home,
still mentally sharp. Ty's mother Irene had left town for a while in her
20's, saying she was visiting a sick friend, and returned 2 years later
with little Tyrone, no father in sight and no mention of anyone named
Artie. Mrs. Gentry's daughter had been friends with Irene, and might know
more details. Ty is convinced from the letters that Artie must be Ty's
father.
The musician, King Monroe, comes in for a drink at the bar. The
bartender signals to Ty that it's the guy he's looking for, and Ty and
Toni come over and introduce themselves. King remembers Artie as a fellow
musician from the old days, who always had women hanging around him but no
one special - except this one lady named "Satin" who was able to keep him
in line for a while. Ty asks what he remembers about Satin; she could
light up the room, King says, could have had any man she wanted (including
me), but she only seemed to want Artie. The name Irene doesn't ring a
bell, only Satin. [What about "Etta Mae," hmm? Could explain E-M's
attitude about Toni and Ty getting romantic? Nah, too obvious...] Toni
gets beeped, and goes to return the coall in case it's Mrs. Gentry. King
wonders it's so important for Ty to know about Artie? I just figured out
that he was my father, Ty tells him. Toni returns and reports that Mrs.
Gentry had phoned her daughter in L.A. - turns out, Artie and Irene were
first cousins, not lovers. Ty says he needs to talk to Artie to clear up
all his questions, and asks King where to find him. I thought you knew,
says King - Artie's dead!

TALK TO SANTA

Carlinos - PLaulina is working in the kitchen when Joe enters in full
Santa Claus regalia, for their annual visit to the children in the
hospital. He expects her to join him as Mrs. Claus, but she says they're
short-handed and besides she has a huge headache. He says he's not
surprised, he found the empty wine bottle, obviously she's hung over. She
takes offense at the accusation. he's upset that she's hinding things
from him, and she resents that he's interrogating her. She informs him
that she wasn't alone, Cindy had brought the wine as a gift and drank most
of it herself. The way he feels about Cindy, this doesn't make him feel
much better - he thinks she could do much better in the friend department
than Cindy. I don't need a father, I need a husband, she replies, nearly
distraught. All he can think of is when she was lying to him about the
pills. How do you expect me to put that behind me, if you won't put it
behind you? she protests. You're right, he agrees; he exits, then comes
back in and starts over, encouraging her to dress up and come help him
entertain the kids at the hospital. This time she balks at the idea of
playing the fat, jolly Mrs. Claus this year, when she's so sensitive about
her weight. Joe has to stop by the house, and tells her he'll leave the
costume in case she changes her mind by the time he gets back. Then he
splits out the back door. Paulina strides right out to the restaurant bar
and defiantly pours herself a glass of wine and takes a sip. Then,
unaware that Shane has left town, she calls and leaves a shaky message on
his answering machine: she's having problems with her life, he's the only
one she can really talk to - and maybe he could use a friend right now,
too? Call me, she begs, toying edgily with her wine glass.

Gary and Rain are having dinner, and Lila joins them at their table
to report to Gary that she used some of Gary's detective techniques and
tracked down Shane in California. Gary guesses that Shane won't come back
unless Vicky lets him know she changed her mind and wants him back. You
never know, says Lila, exiting (see below). Gary notices that Rain isn't
eating much. She says it's because she misses Josie so much. Gary
promises Josie will be home soon, and offers to take Rain to the airport
to see where Josie's plane will arrive as soon as her business is done.
Joe returns as Santa, and Rain's eyes pop. Joe comes over and Gary
introduces Rain. "Reminds me of my Rain-deer!" Santa jokes. Rain thinks
he's funny. Gary says she's keeping her wish list secret so she won't
jinx it. Santa is the one person you can tell, Santa assures her. I want
a doll like me, and a family of my very own, Rain tells him shyly. I'll
do what I can, Santa tells her soberly. Gary whisks Rain off to the
airport, motioning "thank you" to Joe and indicating that he'll pay him
later for the dinner. As they exit, Joe turns and sees Paulina standing
right behind him dressed as Mrs. Claus. He's delighted that she'd changed
her mind. The elves can bake the gingerbread, she quips, kissing him
through his fake whiskers (see below).

Airport - Gary buys Rain a toy airplane, telling her Josie's plane
will look a lot like this. As he pretends to fly it around, he spots an
international newspaper on a nearby seat. The headline reads, ZOE NIKOS
PARTIES AS MANHUNT FOR BILLIONAIRE DAD HEATS UP [some headline - it takes
up half the front page - must be a slow international news day....]. We'd
better get you home and find a sitter, says Gary, it looks like I'll be
working tonight (see below).

PEACE OVERTURE

Cory mansion - Rachel has fallen asleep on the couch, and awakens
with a nightmare. Carl is instantly at her side to reassure her, and she
says she was dreaming about the children. The new '90's models, asks
Carl, or the antiques? She admits she loves Matthew and Amanda but she
almost doesn't know them anymore - she's afraid she's losing them,
especially Matthew. Thanks to Nikos, Carl notes. The doorbell rings -
Carl rises to answer it, but Rachel stops him. It might be Matthew, she
prepares him, he said he was coming by to apologize. He what?! Carl asks
incredulously. He answers the door in silence - it's Matthew, who asks
Carl to just hear him out, the rest is up to you. Carl ushers Matt in to
greet Rachel, then informs him that Rachel's just had another nightmare -
a frequent occurrence since Nikos kidnapped her. Matt admits he was wrong
about Nikos. I told you so, from the very beginning, Carl points out.
Matt says he's sorry he'd mistrusted Carl, but he hadn't been able to buy
that Carl had really changed from the man who'd tried to kill Mac years
ago - I thought you were just using Mom to gain power and the Cory
fortune. So why the change, Carl asks skeptically. When Rachel was
missing and presumed dead, Matt explains, both Amanda and I could see that
you genuinely love my Mom - and you make her happy, which is all I want.
Rachel looks hopefully at Carl. Carl asks about all the Cory stock he's
bought up, do you want to come back to the company? Yes I do, but that's
up to you, says Matt; but tonight I just came to say I'm sorry, and I
don't want anything in return. He thanks Carl for listening, kisses his
mother goodnight, and exits (see below). That took courage, Rachel
remarks. IF he's sincere, Carl replies - time will tell (see below).

PAPER CHASE

Town Square - After Lila leaves Gary at Carlino's, she finds a pay
phone outside to call the courier company, to see if the letter she forged
in Vicky's handwriting was delivered to Shane. She learns that Shane had
moved out - the letter was undeliverable and was being "returned to
sender" (meaning Vicky). Lila panicks.
Vicky's cottage - Hoping to get the intercept the letter before Vicky
sees it, she goes over to Vicky's house and finds it all closed up and
dark while they're on their honeymoon. Lila starts to scour the front
porch to see if any mail might be accumulating (like the forged plea for
Shane's return being, uh, returned?). Donna arrives and catches her,
demanding an explanation, and threatening to call the cops. Lila swears
she's not here to make trouble. Donna snarls that she's been trouble ever
since she shamelessly forged Donna's writing to get Vicky to San Domenica
to catch Shane in bed with Lila. Lila says she just needs to talk to
Shanke, and thought Vicky migiht have heard from him. I hope she never
speaks to him again, now beat it, snaps Donna. A courier arrives looking
for Vicky - she's out of town, I'm her mother, says Donna. He hands her
an overnight letter packet being returned to her, gets Donna's signature
and exits, as Lila recognizes the packet and lets Donna chase her away.
Donna examins the packet and sees that it's from Vicky to Shane, and she
nosily tears it open to read the letter. She reads "Vicky's" admission
that she'd made a mistake marrying Jake and her begging Shane to come
back. Hmm - Lila, forger, suspicious letter, Shane - Donna puts 2 and 2
together and gets - 2 (i.e., she believes that Vicky actually wrote the
letter). Victoria, have you lost your mind? she moans with dismay,
scurrying off. Lila emerges from where she's been hiding, and follows
frantically.

Carlinos - Lila follows Donna to Carlinos, and spots her sitting at a
table, stewing over the letter. She spots Matt at another table and joins
him to keep an inconspicuous eye on Donna. [Wonder why Donna and Matt,
former lovers/newlyweds that they were, don't seem to notice each other?
How quickly they forget...] Matt tells her he'd tried to make peace with
Carl tonight, at Paulina's suggestion - he'd seen how Carl acted while
Rachel was missing, it's possible I was wrong. Are you going back to work
at Cory? she asks, watching Donna the whole time. Matt notes how
distracted she seems, and asks if she ever found Shane. Yes, but I lost
him again, she admits. Maybe someday you'll feel the same way about me as
you do about him, Matt suggests. No, I'm just worried about him, she
protests. I've made my pitch, he replies, mumbling something that sounds
like an invitation to call him when she's ready. He gets up and exits.
She kits herself for letting Matt walk away while she stews over a man who
doesn't want to be found - but I have to get that letter back! She
watches Donna slip the letter into her purse, on the floor by her chair.
She tries to subtly move to the chair nearest Donna's table and scoot back
close enough to make a grab for the letter - but a waiter comes to take
Lila's order. When Lila tries to get rid of him, Donna recognizes her
voice, accusing her of following her. Lila denies it, but Donna grabs her
coat and purse and exits. Drained with frustration, she wallows at her
table - then she hears the waiter call Paulina (who's just returned from
the hospital - see above) to the phone, it's Dr. Roberts. Lila darts over
and tries to get Paulina to put her on the line, but the call is so brief
that he's hung up by the time Lila gets her attention. She pumps Paulina
for info. Paulina tells her that Shane just flew into Chicago and
returned her call from the airport - he didn't know where he'd be staying,
but they could leave a message for him at some bar. The name? Real
surprise - The Blue Parrot. [They're sure getting their money's worth out
of that set, eh?]

ECHOES OF BIG AL

Nikos' suite - Felicia enters, flashing back to her memories of her
horrible fall. Cass follows a moment later. Felicia is anxious to get
her things moved out and close the book on Nikos. She feels like such a
fool for being sucked in by Nikos, but Cass urges her to stop beating
herself up, Nikos folled a lot of people, and she was just following her
heart. She says Gary was right, that she'd used Nikos as a "dry drunk,"
after the pain of Lorna's injury, Gabe's murder, John's betrayal - she
knows Cass is upset that Nikos wasn't caught and punished for torturing
and nearly killing Rachel. Rachel knew instinctively that Nikos was bad
news, says Felicia, I don't think she'll ever get over this.
Later, after a trip to the car to carry stuff out, Cass returns and
finds Felicia sitting out on the balcony, gazing into the night and
remembering. She flashes back to the first shock of meeting the Lucas
look-alike, through being swept off her feet, their whirlwind courtship
and engagement, to sitting on this very balcony with him, watching
fireworks together. Cass sits behind her and wordlessly wraps his arms
around her, and she leans back against him for solace in her misery.
When she has it out of her system, he escorts her back inside. The
doorbell rings. She looks worried it might be you-know-who, but Cass's
expression doesn't change. She takes a breath and opens the door - it's
Gary. He says Cass told him she was moving out, and he stopped by in case
she needed any help. Perfect, says Cass, I have to leave - but they
quickly realize she isn't buying a word of their innocent act. She gets
Cass to admit he'd called Gary so she wouldn't be alone in case of a
meltdown. Should I be happy you both know me so well, she chides with
amusement. I think so, Gary advises, and they kiss her simultaneously on
opposite cheeks.

Somewhere circling the planet - Apparently Big Al has found a way to
live indefinitely on his private jet. He's sitinng and studying the
surveillance tape of Carl in the town squre. His lackey enters and hands
him the latest tape, reporting that Zoe isn't pleased but has agreed to do
as Al asked - she's packing to leave for Bay City tonight. Nikos just
looks intense.

Hospital - Rachel emerges in good spirits after her CAT scan, and
Carl is waiting for her. Joe and Paulina run into them on their way from
one pediatric ward to another, and ask what brings them here. Just a
routine check-up, Carl assures him. Paulina cheerily invites them to the
restaurant later, and she and Joe Ho-Ho-Ho away. Carl just wants to spend
the evening alone at home with Rachel, and she happily agrees. They start
down in the elevator, but it suddenly lurches to a halt. Carl takes it as
a minor irritation, but Rachel is seized with terror at being trapped
(again). Carl tries to contact someone via the emergency phone, but no
answer. We'll be out soon, he reassures Rachel. I have to get out of
here - you have to get me out of here, she insists, terrified, cowering in
the corner and hyperventilating. FADEOUT.

Thanks for reading, and have a good week!
