Here is the update for Another World for Friday, December 8, 1995 - no
hospital action, but lots of restaurants [nobody ever goes to TOPS
anymore, or the Daily Grind (except for the cops on Homicide), it's always
Harbor Club and Sassy's, and we don't even know the owners! It's not like
Felicia ever cooked or anything...but I digress...]:

CABIN FOR TWO AND A HALF?
Paulina/Joe

Paulina has talked Gabe into telling her where Joe is staying in
Canada. She's waiting in his cabin with a pair of baby booties she bought
as visual aids when she breaks the news of her pregnancy. When he comes
back, she tries repeatedly to tell him, but he doesn't want to hear it.

It's been such a lousy day, he's just glad she's here. He babbles on and
on about interviewing the nuns at the convent; they identified Dr. Chika
as Justine's only other visitor. Dr. Chika had posed as Justine's
personal physician, but Joe ran a check on him and learned he was a doctor
of particle physics - more than capable of building the bomb. Then the
nuns had made him feel guilty for not going to mass - Feast of the
Immaculate Conception, dontcha know. They even gave him a figurine of St.
Jude, they obviously think I'm a "lost cause," he moans. As he sets down
the statue, he notices the booties, but doesn't get the hint. Mr.
Detective tries in vain to detect how these booties got in my room. He
still has no clue, even when she tells him she brought them, she'll be
needing them sometime next year. Finally the light dawns - Joe is
stunned. He takes a moment for it to sink in, then he starts bouncing off
the walls with joy. He gives her a big bear hug, then [predictably]
starts worrying about hurting the baby, makes her sit down, put her feet
up, etc., over her fond protests. She says she just took the test today,
couldn't wait to tell him right away, so that's why she's here. They talk
about how happy they are, how right it feels. He wants to wait on her
hand and foot; all I need is you, she tells him, and they kiss on the bed.

Later Joe calls to report in to headquarters about his investigation.

He tells Paulina that Gabe's put out an APB for Dr. Chika in Canada [can
you say "jurisdiction"?], and gave him a couple days off so they can stay
in their cabin and celebrate. Paulina notices the snow falling outside
[in December? in Manitoba? What are the odds?], and they stand by the
window and watch it as they enjoy their happy news.

A LANDLORD'S WORK IS NEVER DONE
Jake/Nick/Intruder

Jake is at the gym [whatever happened to The Spa?], working out on
the heavy bag. He thinks about Paulina's revelation that she's pregnant,
and pictures Joe's grinning face on the bag as he pommels it. Nick
interrupts him, nearly getting his head bitten off. He tells Jake he had
a landlord/tenant meeting scheduled with Joe, but Joe didn't show. He's
in Canada tracking down Justine's accomplice, snarls Jake, at least he's
far away from Paulina. Nick reports that Joe's restaurant building is a
real pit, falling apart. Jake decides Nick should get a hammer and head
over there. I'm a landlord, I'm not Schneider, Nick protests, I don't fix
buildings. I don't want you to fix it, Jake corrects him, I want you to
make it worse. Ah, Nick smiles, bad enough so Joe'd go bankrupt trying to
fix it on a cop's salary! Jake sends Nick happily off to "work," and goes
back to beating up "Joe."

At the Future Site of Carlino's - a dark figure sneaks in, puts a
zipper bag on an upturned empty cable spool, and pulls out a large
submarine sandwich, a miniature Statue of Liberty, and a wallet. He/she
goes to the pay phone, but it's out of order. Suddenly we hear keys
rattling at the door; the figure ducks out of sight as Nick enters, spots
the loot on the makeshift table, and starts to look around for the
intruder. The intruder finds a 2x4 and raises it, waiting for Nick to
come around the corner, but Nick catches the person's arm and shoves the
intruder against the wall into a pool of light. You guessed it: it's A
GIRL! They accuse each other of breaking in, then Nick shouts that she
can't crash here, try the shelter down the street. She says she's not
homeless, she knows Joe, where is he? Out of town, Nick answers, I
represent his landlord, now beat it before I throw you out on your rear.

She takes her bag and skulks away.

Some time later, the girl [oh, let's call her - Sophia?] sneaks back
to Joe's restaurant to retrieve her sandwich. She finds it where she left
it and takes a bite, but Nick's dog Riley starts barking at her. While
Nick is chewing her out for coming back, Riley wolfs down her sandwich -
my last one, she wails. Nick demands she leave now. I can't, she
confesses, I have nowhere else to go.

I'LL HAVE A BLUE CHRISTMAS WITHOUT YOU...
Vicky/Grant/Steven/Jake

Vicky is picking up toys from the living room. From between sofa
units she finds a half-eaten sandwich - and Ryan's wallet. In it is a
picture of them together at Christmas. The doorbell interrupts her
memories; it's Grant, with a Christmas tree for her. You're way out of
line, she cautions him. Grant thinks she just needs a push to get her
into the holiday spirit, but she responds that he can't make up for losing
Ryan. Christmas Eve was Ryan's birthday, she reminds him, holding back
the tears, also the day he proposed to her. It was always a really
special time for them and the kids, they used to pick out the tree
together. I'll get the tree myself, when I'm up to it, she says, I'm
really not trying to stifle Christmas for my kids, but please stop acting
like you're trying to take Ryan's place in our lives. Grant apologizes,
offers to donate the tree to the community center - then Steven runs out,
gets all excited over the tree, and offers to be good and clean his room
if Mom will just let them keep the tree. Vicky, seeing how Steven's
spirits seem to have lifted, relents. Grant brings in the tree to set it
up, and stays to help decorate it.

Later Vicky is watching Steven happily hanging ornaments with Grant,
when the doorbell rings. When she opens the door, Jake bursts in dragging
another tree. He sees that Grant got there first - what the hell are you
doing here, Jake demands. He and Grant trade insults until Vicky breaks
it up for Steven's sake. Steven wants to keep both trees, but Vicky says
one's enough, and takes Jake aside to talk in private. She explains how
it wasn't her idea, she'd told Grant no, until Steven got all excited.

Jake is incensed at how cozy Gun-boy is getting with her and her family,
do I have to remind you of all the damage he's done to you? She assures
him she's forgotten nothing - but if Grant can bring a little holiday
cheer to help Steven and Kirk get over losing Ryan, I say fine. Why not
take the tree back to your place, she suggests. My hotel room, no thanks,
he growls. She guesses something besides the tree has put him in such a
foul mood, we're friends, you can tell me anything. It's obviously a
struggle, but he finally tells her Paulina's pregnant. Vicky's heart goes
out to him, I know how much you and Paulina wanted kids. She'll still
have kids - just not with me, he smiles ironically. As they watch Grant
helping Steven put the star on top of the tree, Jake reminisces to Vicky
about Paulina's box of ornaments with the big star, they'd planned to
write their kids' names on each point. Vicky promises he'll get through
this, just like she got over him when he dumped her for her sister Marley.

Sure I made some bad choices, she admits, but eventually I found happiness
with Ryan - and you'll find happiness, too. I'm not giving up, he tells
her. I kinda think it's out of your hands, she warns him. They share a
comforting embrace - which Grant witnesses, not pleased at all.

Jake leaves, and tries to return his unused tree to the lot where he
bought it. The salesman refuses, no refunds. Forget the money, says
Jake, give the tree to someone who can't afford one, I don't need it. He
shoves the tree into the guy's hands and exits.

When Vicky's tree is all decorated, she thanks Grant for cheering up
Steven. Grant asks to see Kirk, and Vicky goes to get him from his room.

While she's gone, Grant notices Steven moping on the sofa and sits beside
him, talking about what a nice evening it's been. Steven is obviously
depressed - I'm glad you came, he says, but I miss Ryan, why'd he have to
die? I'm sorry, Grant says uncomfortably, putting his arm around the
lad's shoulders, it wasn't right, was it? Vicky rushes in carrying Kirk,
frantic: Kirk's burning up with fever, she gasps.

A NICE RELAXING DINNER (NOT)
Matt/Donna/Mike/Cass/Frankie/Cecile

Matt and Donna are dining at the Harbor Club. He gives her an
envelope wrapped in a ribbon. It's tickets for a Christmas honeymoon in
Hawaii. She's touched by his wonderful gesture; as she hugs him, she
looks up and sees Michael enter. He comes over to greet them, says he's
meeting his date Dr. Carol here. As he's heading for the bar to wait,
Matt stops him and grills him again about the name of that nasty farmer
who wouldn't let Donna use the phone on their wedding night. Sorry, been
busy, I'll get right on it, Mike bluffs.  Donna tells him not to bother;

as Mike finally gets away, she begs Matt to drop the whole unpleasant
matter, water under the bridge, time to focus on our future together.

Cass, too, has brought Frankie to the Harbor Club for a romantic
dinner to make up for their earlier fight. He tells her he's dropped
Laurie as a client, Frankie was right, he'd been neglecting the people who
matter most to him. They're about to share an arm-twining toast with
sparkling water, when Cecilla the Hun appears at their table, says she's
meeting Maggie here for dinner, but takes the opportunity to get in a few
digs at Frankie's expense. They study their menus and try to ignore her,
until she brings up the newspaper accounts about Laurie - she pretends
sympathy, the poor creature, and remarks how Cass was always one to take
on losers - nice outfit, Frankie... They've finally had enough and tell
Cec to get lost, this is a dinner for two. Wouldn't dream of intruding,
she smirks, spotting Mike at the bar and heading in his direction. Cass
vows to Frankie that he's starting a new chapter in their lives - the
bookstore is turning a profit, you have your P.I. business [gee, rescuing
lost cats must pay better than I thought?], and my law practice took too
much out of me to have enough left for my family. Promise? she asks, no
more lawyer stuff? As soon as I finish with one last client, he says,
glancing toward Cecile. Frankie follows his glance and goes quietly
ballistic - you know what a mess she makes of people's lives, especially
yours, she even crashed our honeymoon. Not to worry, he assures her, I
just have to file some papers for her, it won't affect our lives, scout's
honor. [Famous last words?]

Over at the bar, Mike buys Cec a drink and she removes her jacket.

When she pries, he tells her he's waiting for an oncologist - actually,
she's my date [gotcha, Cec!]. Well, you know doctors, coos Cec, could be
hours late, why not keep me company while I wait for Maggie.

Matt tries to get Donna to focus on ordering dinner, but she can't
help carping about how Cecile has glommed onto Mike. Matt thinks Mike
looks like he's doing just fine; since Donna is turning herself into a
pretzel trying to watch Mike and Cec flirting, Matt finally says he'll
just order for both of them. Fine, says Donna; she gets up with her glass
of (red) wine, heads in Mike's direction, and pretends to trip, dousing
Cec's white blouse. Oh, I'm so sorry, it was an accident, Donna claims,
making a bigger mess trying to get the stain out with club soda and blue
paper napkins. Cecile doesn't buy a word of it, and testily excuses
herself to hit the ladies' room. I didn't need to be rescued, Mike points
out to Donna. Even you don't deserve a barracuda like her, Donna replies.

The bartender tells Mike his date just called, she'd had an emergency at
the hospital and has to cancel. Mike's about to head home, when Donna
stops him to discuss their "nasty farmer" story. Tell Matt anything you
want, says Mike, just leave me out of it - as long as no one else saw you
that night, we're in the clear. Donna looks ill. No one else saw you,
did they? Mike asks with disbelief. I'll handle it, says Donna, glancing
toward where Cecile just exited. Mike exits, and Matt gives Donna a
little wave from their table, where he's been sitting and watching her the
whole time.

Cec returns wearing her jacket to cover the stain. Donna still
claims it was an accident, but Cec knows it was intentional. She finds it
interesting that Donna seems so protective and possessive of Mike when she
has a new husband, child though he may be. Go back where you came from,
Cecile, says Donna, nobody wants you here. Donna walks away [potty break,
maybe?], and Cec stops by Matt's table [aa-OOOOO-gah, aa-OOOOO-gah,
WARNING, WARNING, RED ALERT, RED ALERT...]. I never congratulated
you on
your wedding, she coos, I'm so glad it finally worked out - why, Donna was
so frantic that night when she came to the Cory mansion, I tried to help
her but she was inconsolable! Matt absorbs this, rises in a rage, and
confronts Donna at the entrance: You lied to me, he accuses, you made up
that whole farmer/tire story! Donna, stunned glances over at Cecile, who
sits gloating at their table. FREEZE FRAME.

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
