Here is the cliff-hanger update for Another World for Friday, December 1,

1995:

* John clams up with Sharlene, breaks up with Felicia
* Grant as hero? Yup, he rescues Steven & Kirk, risks life to save Vicky
* Two parties interrupted: 1) Gary & Josie; and 2) Hospital gala
* Justine on the loose, attacks Carl & Rachel

PROLOGUE

The crowd is gathering for the grand hospital gala: guests in fancy
dress, and cops (uniform & plainclothes). A reporter does a live
broadcast from the entrance. He describes the bomb threats, Laurie's
arrest, and the dedication of this new wing in honor of Ryan. Paulina is
at the door checking off names as guests arrive. Joe greets her, then
looks for Josie and Gary, who haven't reported in yet. We see a
current-time montage of various people: Sharlene at home, worrying about
John; John looking morose; Felicia, distressed, dressing for the party and
putting her ring back on; Matt and Donna dressing up and smooching; Mike
having trouble with his bow tie; Cecile primping and preening herself and
Maggie; Nick looking spiffy and pleased; and Gary and Josie starting to
dress - but quickly falling back into each other's arms and into bed.

TROUBLE ON THE FARM
John/Sharlene/Frankie

John arrives home, looking tired and disheveled. He finds Sharlene
in the bedroom, tells her he was riding around on his motorcycle all night
trying to work out his problems. She's hurt that he's shutting her out.

He says it was all about her selling the farm, it's a guy thing, his pride
won't let him lean on her like that; she points out that they soon may
have no choice. Suddenly he says he thinks they should show up at the
gala together, to show the world they're not beaten yet. Sharlene says
they have too much to work through first: you said you needed to "fix
something broken inside" - did you mean us? He tells her the problem
isn't with them or their marriage, it's with him. Part of me knew I was
out of control last night, he confesses, and part of me didn't care - I
feel cut off from myself, like I've lost everything. Nothing we can't
replace, she tries to reassure him; I'm not so sure, he answers. She says
she doesn't understand why he's been pulling away from her, won't look at
her or talk to her, he's only half here and that's not good enough,
where's the other half? I can't tell you, he answers guiltily; then he
takes a clean shirt and exits, telling her he's going out to "fix what's
broken" [see below]. She sighs in frustration.

Apparently she calls Frankie, who rushes right over. Sharlene is
distraught over John's recent behavior. Frankie suggests it might be the
stress of the lawsuit, the suspension, etc. No, says Sharlene, this is
different, John's changed or regressed or something, I can't reach him -
my marriage is falling apart, and I don't know what to do about it! She
blames herself for not noticing John was so troubled, she was too busy
with her own problems [little things, like childhood rape, multiple
personality disorder, her sister's stroke, etc.]. That wasn't your fault,
Frankie says supportively; she talks about the angst Cass felt when he
gave up being a lawyer [what? you hadn't noticed?] to open his bookstore,
and that was by choice - John's losing his job was a total shock to him,
no wonder he's having an identity crisis! But he's like that about me,
too, says Sharlene, and I'm not going anywhere. Maybe he doesn't know
that, maybe he's testing you, suggests Frankie. It doesn't feel like
that, frets Sharlene, it feels like part of him is already gone, as if -
do you think - is it possible - could John be having an AFFAIR? [Ha, if
you can call it that...]

TRAPPED
Grant/Justine/Vicky/Steven/Kirk (non-speaking part)

Trapped in the elevator in the deserted new hospital wing, Steven
finds the "clock" under his toy truck - just as Justine is telling Vicky
over the emergency phone that the bomb is set, they're about to blow sky
high! Suddenly Grant finds Justine at the elevator, and tells her it's
all over. You've never been able to stop me before, she sneers, what
makes you think you can stop me now? Vicky calls out for help, which
Grant hears through Justine's phone. Justine takes off [see below], as
Grant grabs the phone. He tells Vicky he thinks he can catch Justine, but
she tells him about the bomb, which has just ticked down to 14 minutes.

She says there's no time to get the cops, and begs him to get the doors
open. He tries the circuit breaker on the wall, but finds that Justine
has cut the power, and he can't pull the doors apart. Grant spots a
nearby toolbox, finds a metal lever, and pries the elevator doors open.

The car is down about a floor. As Vicky tells him the timer is down to 10
minutes, he climbs down the ladder on the wall of the elevator shaft, to
get to the car. The timer is down to 9 minutes by the time he climbs down
through the ceiling trap into the car, stepping down by way of some
stacked trunks. He proposes that he climb back onto the roof, Vicky help
hand the kids up to him through the ceiling, and he can carry them up the
ladder on his back - then she can climb up and follow. They start with
Steven...

PARTY FUN
Carl/Rachel/Cecile/Maggie/Paulina/Nick/Joe/Lorna/Gabe/Dana/Marshall/
Felicia/Matt/Donna/Cass/Mike/Carol/Rita/Anyone else I forgot

Carl cases the gala looking for Justine. He tells Rachel there's no

trace, but he can feel Justine is here. Rachel is worried, Carl doesn't

look well, but Carl says he'll have no peace until Justine is dead. He

catches a glimpse of a dark cloaked figure scurrying through the room and

out the back. He tells Rachel he's going out for some air, and takes off

in pursuit. Rachel gets suspicious and follows him [see below].

Cecile arrives with Maggie, but Paulina blocks her at the door, her

name isn't on the guest list. Cecile tries to bluff her way in by making

a scene about being royalty, must be some mistake, etc., but Paulina

isn't fooled - you should have paid for your ticket, no free rides, she

says. Maggie is humiliated, but thrilled when Nick appears. He tells

her curtly that he's here for Vicky, Ryan was almost his brother-in-law.

He gets his ticket and enters. Joe arrives, listens to Cecile's line,

and finally gives her a couple of tickets to get rid of her. Paulina is

annoyed, calls Cecile a "royal" pain.

Lorna finds Gabe, they flirt a little, then she's thrown when he

gives her a single pink rose. She covers by thanking him for tracking

down the bomb threats. Then he reminds her that she was the one who

asked him on this date, he expects her to show him a good time.

Dana runs into the [seldom-seen] Marshall [yes, Marshall!], who's

happy to see her. He's about to escort her in, when Felicia arrives [her

hair is slicked back like she just got out of the shower]. Marshall

gives Felicia a kiss on the cheek, and Dana is surprised to learn they're

here as a couple.

Felicia and Marshall run into Lorna and Gabe. Marshall asks about
the bomb threats. Gabe explains that there was never any bomb, Laurie
just didn't want people celebrating at the site of her son's death. Gabe
excuses himself to talk to Tibbs, tells him they're still on the lookout
for Justine, and asks about Gary and Josie. Still a no-show, Tibbs tells
him. Lorna comes over and drags Gabe away to the dance floor. Rita
Madison arrives, and Felicia points her out to Marshall with a
contemptuous sneer, that power-crazed woman! Hmmmmm, responds
Marshall.

Cecile runs into Matt and Donna, makes a catty remark or two, then
drops them when she spots Cass using the phone at the desk. She makes a
beeline for him, but as soon as he sees her, he hangs up and walks away.

Mike arrives with his date, Carol, his former oncologist, and
introduces her to Donna and Matt. Donna greets her coolly but civilly,
excuses herself and Matt to hit the dance floor, and tells Mike good luck
with his speech. My speech! He realize he left it in the deserted new
pediatric wing when he was watching Kirk, and he frantically excuses
himself from Carol and dashes out [see below].

RESCUED!
Mike/Steven/Kirk/Grant/Vicky/Gabe/Rita

Mike arrives at the elevator, just as Grant is lifting the kids to

safety. Grant hands the kids to Mike, tells him about the bomb, and says

to get the boys out of here while I go back for Vicky. Mike exits with

Kirk and Steven; Grant poises to help Vicky climb out, but she falls off

the trunks and hurts her shoulder - less than 5 minutes to go!

Mike returns to the gala carrying the kids, has a quiet word with

Gabe, and takes the kids outside. Gabe calls for the crowd's attention

and orders everyone to exit immediately, don't stop for coats, look for

your friends and relatives outside. People rush for the doors, but some

guests help the hospital staff evacuate the patients. As guests and

patients are evacuating, Rita rails against Gabe, he promised me

everything was under control. At Gabe's request, she goes back inside

and gets the building plans, which Gabe uses to locate the elevator. He

sends in the bomb squad, largely tuning out Rita's carping about breaking

his promise, I thought the bomber was in custody, what about the other

patients in the main hospital, etc.

Grant returns to the elevator car and reassures Vicky that Mike has
the kids. She urges him to get out while he can, time's running out - one
(1) minute to go! He ignores her, digs through her purse and finds a pair
of scissors. In the movies there are always 2 wires, he says, if you cut
the right one, you're in the clear; cut the wrong one and the bomb goes
off, which is about to happen anyway, we have nothing to lose, so - red or
blue? She says he's crazy - then says Blue, cut it. He snips it, then
they huddle behind a trunk as the clock reaches 0000. The timer beeps -
but no explosion, it worked! Grant wonders why she picked blue, red's her
favorite color. It is, I was trying a reverse thing, she laughs as they
relax. He credits her famous Lassiter luck; she asks why he came back
instead of going after the kids or Justine. Just leave you here? I don't
think so, he answers. The power comes back on, and they hear the sounds
of a rescue team. They hug joyfully, although she winces at the pain in
her shoulder.

MAKE THE WORLD GO AWAY [or, TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT?]
Josie/Gary

Snuggling in bed together, Gary tells Josie she's made him happier
than he's ever been, but Josie says she's scared. She says she's been
thinking about Ryan, about her mom and John, and she needs to know if what
they have is just physical or something more, so she can prepare herself
for... For what, Gary asks, for when I tell you I love you? He says it
feels like love to him - they start kissing, then the phone rings. Gary
doesn't want to answer it, but Josie talks him into it. When he hangs up,
he tells her they'd better get dressed, something heavy's going down.

They finally arrive at the hospital. Tibbs tells them we could have

used you 20 minutes ago when the place was real chaos - now it's all

over, the bomb has been found and dismantled, we're just waiting for the

final all-clear to let people back in.

THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
Mike/Steven/Kirk/Nick/Matt/Donna/Vicky/Grant/Gabe

Mike spots Nick outside, leaves the boys with him, and tells him to
get Donna to take them to her place and keep them there. He dashes back
inside to see about Vicky. Donna and Matt see Nick and the kids; Donna is
frantic when Nick says he thinks Vicky's still inside. Matt goes and gets
a blanket for Donna and the children, and tells them he found out the
crisis is over, Vicky's safe. Grant and Vicky soon emerge with Mike and
Gabe. Vicky dashes over to hug her kids; Donna and Matt watch as she
thanks Grant with new warmth.

Grant goes over to Gabe, tells him he saw Justine, she planted the
bomb, he almost had her but Vicky and the kids were trapped. Gabe says
you saved the day - but Grant says it's not over yet, wherever Justine is
she must be stopped. He urges that they split up to look for Justine,
she's targeted so many people. Gabe tells him to let the police handle it
from here. He spots Gary and Josie, zooms in, and says nice of you to
show up, where the hell have you been? They squirm.
Gabe announces the all-clear; as soon as the patients are back in

their rooms, the guests can return to their party. Donna wants Vicky to

come home with them and the boys, but Vicky doesn't want to risk Justine

tracking her down there. She asks Donna and Matt to take her kids to a

hotel, don't tell anyone where you've gone, until Justine is caught.

Donna is worried for Vicky, but agrees. Vicky gives her sons a last hug

before they leave, then she tracks down Grant. There's something I have

to tell you, she says.

BREAKIN' UP IS HARD TO DO
John/Felicia

John arrives at the hospital; in the commotion outside, he asks Lorna
about the chaos, and she tells him there was a bomb scare but it's over.

He sees Felicia, and tries to apologize for leading her on and deluding
himself, it has to end now before we go too far, I [all of a sudden] can't
risk my marriage, ya-da, ya-da, ya-da. Felicia responds bitterly - did
you think I was just a casual diversion while your wife was out of town? I
believed you when you said we should explore our feelings; if you expect
me to be brave and understanding, you can forget it, you've used me for
the last time! She stalks away. He follows her and tries to smooth
things over, but she cuts him down and leaves in disgust.

THE FINAL SHOWDOWN
Carl/Rachel/Justine

Carl arrives at the Cory mansion, where he's apparently trailed
Justine. Without turning on the lights, he searches for her with a
flashlight, calling out to her: your surprise has failed, I know you're
here, you wanted me to see and follow you, here I am, come out and face
me. Rachel arrives; Carl tells her Justine is here. Rachel wants to get
out now and call the cops, but Carl is afraid the cops will only lose her
again - this must end tonight. They huddle together as they hear
Justine's mocking cackle echo through the house. Suddenly Justine
appears, holding a gun on them. How convenient, she sneers, which of you
wants to die first? Just me, says Carl, begging her to spare Rachel.

Justine drops hints that she left a surprise at the hospital, her own
tribute to the son who rejected her - too bad Carl couldn't die with the
rest ... KA-BOOOOM! Carl's been holding his left arm; suddenly he
clutches at his chest, calls out to Rachel, and collapses onto the floor
with an apparent heart attack. Rachel anxiously examines him, says he
doesn't seem to be breathing, and tries to get to the phone to call an
ambulance. Justine darts across the room and intercepts her, pouting
about how Carl typically deprived her of the pleasure of killing him - oh,
well, at least I got to watch. She aims the gun at Rachel, who is
crouched over Carl: End of the line, she says [how ironic - a train
metaphor!] - Now it's your turn! FREEZE FRAME.

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
