Here is the update for Another World for Friday, December 5,
1994:

Lots o' big stuff this week

- Brett and Morgan talk in circles (again); Brett heads for
Chicago
- Vicky and Ryan won't let each other get a word in edgewise
- Amanda and Lorna have a civil conversation (alert the
media!)
- Vicky gets some news from Evan; Evan gets THE news from
Carl
- Vicky and Evan compare notes over Grant
- Rachel gives Carl the heave-ho while Grant eavesdrops in
the Cory mansion [where are the security guards when you
need them?]
- Ryan reaches a lousy decision while in a bad mood

Brett/Morgan

Brett gets a call, and tells Morgan she has to go to Chicago
tomorrow for her new job. Morgan is thrown, because he's
planned a going-away/engagement celebration at Tops, but now
she'll have to stay and pack. Brett wonders if they're
nuts; between the engagement and the new job and the instant
packing, things are moving pretty fast. She hates to leave
him to deal with the movers alone; he assures her he can
cope. Then he sits her in a chair, kneels in front of her,
and says since they won't have their party tonight, he'll do
"the ring thing" right now. He pulls a box out of his
pocket, takes out the rings (she gasps), and puts it on her
finger: she can look at it and know how much he loves her,
even when they're far apart. She falls into his arms with
kisses and hugs. Later, he's giving her luggage a final
check before he drives her to the airport. He finds some
photographs, including one of Brett and her old boyfriend
(Rob, the ballplayer) at Wrigley Field. He acts a little
jealous but she reassures him it was a long time ago, Rob
dumped her, Morgan's been with her through thick and thin,
he's changed her life, etc.  She sends him to get the car;
while he's gone, she muses over the old photo, then tosses
it in the trash. Morgan returns 20 seconds later
[apparently the car was in the hallway], and they kiss good-
bye. He takes her luggage out while she locks up; on her
way out she pauses, retrieves the photo from the trash, and
sticks it in her purse. Then she turns out the light, takes
a last look around, and exits.

Spence/Grant/Lorna/Amanda

Spence is appalled at Grant's cold-blooded strategy of
letting Amanda's "lover" (Evan) sneak in and see her, why
doesn't he go upstairs and kick the hell out of him? Grant
predicts Evan's ardor will cool once he sees Amanda
paralyzed; the real problem, he says, is Rachel. Spence
doesn't get it, but Grant says he's trying to protect
Amanda, Rachel is all over her, pushing her to get therapy
and walk again, and we can't have that, can we? Spence
suspects Grant has ulterior motives, like he did with Vicky
in Switzerland. Grant insists he's in complete control. He
gets his keys to the Cory house, ostensibly to get Alli's
things to move to his house. As he leaves, Lorna arrives to
start work; Grant says he'll be right back; Lorna and Spence
trade barbs.

Meanwhile, Amanda is sitting alone in her bed. She flashes
back to her conversation with Evan, who just left. Lorna
enters her room (which apparently used to be Lorna's office
before Grant converted it) to get some papers for Grant.
Amanda tells her she's o.k., but Lorna hints she just saw
something that made her think otherwise. She finally
reveals that while she was on her way in, she saw Evan
sneaking off the grounds. Amanda asks Lorna not to mention
it to Grant [see below].

Vicky/Ryan/Billy/Evan

Ryan asks Vicky to stay and help him take care of Billy's
sister's kids. Vicky asks if this means he wants them to
get back together. Ryan is flustered, and makes a quick
escape to go to the hospital to see Billy - but he asks her
to stay and watch the kids until he gets back. He exits,
and Vicky kicks herself for putting words in his mouth -
"Why didn't you just let the guy say what he wanted to say?"
she tells herself [see below]. The phone in her purse rings
- she hopes it's Ryan, but it's Evan. She tells him she's
at Ryan's, it's a long story. He tells her he just climbed
Grant's trellis to see Amanda (Vicky hoots with delight),
and he's convinced something's wrong. Vicky says come on
over, let's talk.

Ryan arrives at the hospital with some magazines for Billy.
Billy apologizes for the damage the BeBe's kids have
probably done to his place. Ryan says no problem; besides,
a cute blonde came over to help me out, as well you know
since you sent her. Ryan wants to know what Billy was about
to tell him before he got shot. Billy says they have a
witness who can place Ito in Evan's garage before the
accident. It's all circumstantial, the department still
considers the case closed, Billy tells him. We don't have
enough evidence to get the D.A. to re-open the case, and no
one else will want to waste their time, but you have a
personal investment; if you want to pursue it, it's up to
you, I'll back you either way, and I'm sure Vicky will, too.
Ryan notes wryly, Vicky's the only one who can manipulate
people as well as my father. She's usually just trying to
manipulate you back to where you belong, suggests Billy,
which is walking down the aisle side-by-side.

Meanwhile, Evan arrives at Ryan's and Vicky lets him in.
Talk fast before Ryan gets back, she says. He reports that
Amanda seemed o.k. on the surface, but she seemed totally
resigned to being paralyzed, not her usual feistiness, and
she seems almost afraid of something. Of Grant? Vicky asks.
No, Grant's like a saint, he answers, he's made up a special
room for her, checks on her all the time, brings her
medication - if Grant is that attentive, and Amanda is
really happy, I'm bowing out.  Don't do that, Vicky advises;
she's gotten the chills from hearing the account, noting the
similarities to how Grant treated her in Switzerland. She
wants Evan to keep his eyes open and gather evidence that
Grant is back to his psychotic tricks - then she can prove
to Ryan that Grant is still sick, and Ryan will have to
forgive her for switching babies to keep Kirk away from
Grant; but, despite their animosity, she's also truly afraid
for Amanda. She thinks Grant is playing the Switzerland
game with Amanda to punish her for something they don't know
about. If you can catch him, she tells Evan, we can blow
the whistle on the creep. Yeah, right, says Evan, who'd
believe us, the two biggest con artists in town, against the
word of a U.S. Senator? - but he agrees to keep an eye on
Grant for Amanda's sake. Vicky ushers him out quickly, with
a warning: Watch your back, chances you're next on Grant's
hit list, right after Amanda.

Rachel/Carl/Grant

Now that she knows Carl was involved in Amanda's accident,
Rachel won't let him just walk out - "That's too easy," she
says. She tells him maybe he has no regard for human life
because he's never raised a child, lucky for Ryan; he
doesn't care who he hurts, he's amoral. She expresses guilt
for bringing him into her home where he was sure to revert
to form and hurt them all. Carl says he's changed because
of her and Ryan, but she doesn't believe him and he doesn't
argue with her. Meanwhile, Grant has used his key to enter
the Cory house unannounced; when he hears the heated
discussion, he hides out in the foyer and eavesdrops [CHEEZ,
what a nerve!]. Carl offers to tell Amanda the truth, but
Rachel says stay away from her. She suspects all his
remorse is because it was Amanda who was hurt; if Evan had
been killed and Amanda was safe, Carl wouldn't have batted
an eye. You put Amanda in a wheelchair, she says, get out
of our lives. Carl says he's turning himself in. Rachel
tells him to keep the scandal from touching her family, and
Carl agrees. She kicks him out of Cory; he gives her back
his wedding ring, saying all he has left are memories. You
don't deserve them, Rachel answers, you deserve to be alone,
that's your punishment. She tells him to leave and never
see her again. He walks out. Grant emerges and confronts
Rachel with false curiosity and sympathy. Rachel is almost
in shock over what's happened. Grant pretends to be
surprised when she tells him Evan wasn't at fault, Carl
caused Amanda's accident and then lied about it so she
kicked him out. She urges Grant to keep up Amanda's
spirits, don't let her give up, she'll walk again if I have
to drag her out of bed myself. Don't worry, says Grant
cryptically (while Rachel is too shaken to notice), Amanda
will get everything she deserves. Rachel cuts off their
conversation and runs upstairs in tears. Grant's lip curls
in a little smirk.

Evan/Carl

Evan returns home, to find an agitated Carl waiting for him.
Rachel knows everything, I told her, says Carl, now shut up
and listen: From now on I will control everything, you will
remain silent no matter who asks (like Rachel or Ryan), you
don't need to know anything more. Then you did put a hit on
me, Evan says bemusedly. If I had, snarls Carl
[convincingly], you wouldn't be breathing; just stay out
of it. Where are you going, says Evan - then he adds with
amazement, "You're going to confess to something you didn't
do!" Carl gives him a wry smile, then gets on the elevator
and exits.

Rachel/Grant/Lorna/Amanda/Alli

Grant is in his study when Rachel calls; he stands there and
listens as she puts a message on his machine (so he can
claim later that he never played it back). As she speaks,
he makes sarcastic comments (Rachel: "Sorry I was so abrupt,
but I was upset..." Grant: "I'll bet you were..." Rachel:
"Don't tell Amanda about Carl yet, I think it's best we put
it off..." Grant: "Do you, now?"). She suggests that
she'll decide when the time is right, and then Rachel wants
to tell Amanda herself. Later, Rachel is sitting on the
stairway at home, grief-stricken. She rises and ambles into
the living room; as she passes the desk, she sees the photo
of her and Carl, and she pushes it over. She goes to the
sofa and sits a moment with her face in her hands, then
opens the photo album on the coffee table to some childhood
shots of Amanda [I expected some to look like Sandra
Reinhart, but none did]. How am I going to tell you the
truth, she sighs.

Up in Amanda's room, Lorna agrees to keep quiet about seeing
Evan, he was probably uninvited anyway. Yes, Amanda
confirms, there was never anything romantic between us.
Lorna says she knows Amanda loves Grant, and she can see
he's devoted to her, so despite what Amanda thinks of her,
she won't mess with their marriage. Amanda wonders if it's
because Lorna feels sorry for her. No way, laughs Lorna,
you're a tough cookie, you're gonna beat this. Alli bounces
in, and announces that she's all moved in, Grant's got her
room all fixed up, down to the posters on the wall [is he
obsessive, or what?] - he's the best! Grant appears [he's
been doing a lot of that today - sneak up, eavesdrop, then
pop up at an opportune moment] and asks, as if he's teasing:
"What about you, Amanda? Do you think I'm the best?" Silly
question, she answers to Grant and Alli, "I'm the luckiest
woman in the world." (Of course, she glances down at her
immobile legs, and her smile fades.) Grant sends Alli to
her room to play with the new computer he bought her.
Sherlock Amanda senses something's wrong, and asks Grant
what gives. He pretends to be reluctant to spill the beans,
and lets her drag it out of him that "I'm sure your mother
would have told us long ago if she had knows - Carl caused
your accident." Amanda, is shocked (and almost blurts out
something like, Evan said the opposite when he was here just
now...but she catches herself, and Grant catches her doing
it), and says but Rachel said it was Evan's fault. Grant
sits in accusatory silence, and lets Amanda talk herself
into wondering if Rachel knew all along, and she's been
lying to protect Carl. [Mission accomplished, daughter
suspicious of mother...]

Ryan/Vicky

Ryan returns from the hospital; Vicky tells him Billy's
sister just picked up the kids. She asks about Billy, then
starts to explain about her comments earlier. Ryan, still
stewing about the Carl/Ito/Evan case, interrupts Vicky's
statement - not every crisis or trauma revolves around you,
Vicky. I get the message, she snaps, mind my own business,
I'm outa here. He tries to stop her as she heads out the
door, but she's gone. He kicks himself: "I should have
just let her say what she wanted to say" [see above]. He
picks up his phone and, as he walks to the window, dials
Billy. "I've decided to re-open Amanda's case," he
announces, "I'm going after my father." FREEZE FRAME.

Yours truly,

Vicky (vkorosei@midas.sinclair.edu)
