DISCLAIMER - my coverage today was interrupted by a brief Presidential
press conference; please excuse any gaps in the story logic, which hasn't
always been very logical lately, even when it ISN'T interrupted! With
that in mind...

Here is the update for Another World for Friday, November 14, 1997, in
which:

* Rain disappears, giving Gary and Josie a scare
* Chris confronts Toni about her feelings for Tyrone
* Carl leaves Matt out of the loop, and Lila sympathizes
* Shane finds time to treat Rachel, in between chasing Vicky and annoying
Jake
* Vicky gets an anonymous message - and a visitor from the East?

LITTLE GIRL LOST (AND FOUND)

Sinclair digs - Gary returns to find the house glowing with candles
left over from the blackout. Josie tells him that Rain slept right
through it. Gary reports that Rachel's been returned home, then starts
getting romantic in the candlelight. Josie wants to check on Rain first -
and panics to find the bed empty and the child nowhere in sight.. Josie
and Gary tear around frantically looking for the kid, and Gary finally
finds her hiding in the back of the closet. She tells them she was scared
by the dark [so why was she hiding in the closet, huh?]. Josie reassures
her, and says if she ever gets scared all she has to do is call out to
them and they'll come running. Josie then tells her she can spend the
night in their bed. They carry her in, and she snuggles in with her
stuffed tiger and quickly falls asleep.
Gary and Josie tiptoe back to the living room, and Josie admits she
was afraid Popper had come and snatched Rain. She's grown to love the
little girl and wants them to adopt her. Gary's all for it, but first
things first: he pulls a fat envelope out of his coat which he'd saved to
open with Josie. It's from Children's Services, in response to their
application for temporary custody. It turns out they've been approved, as
soon as they complete the enclosed paperwork. Josie whoops and bounces
around the room, now they can be a family as she'd hoped. Gary cautions
her, there's no guarantee they'll be able to adopt her, he needs to get a
lawyer to start the process. Josie figures they have a better chance than
anyone else, unless an unknown blood relative pops out of the blue to
claim her.
The noise rouses Rain, who emerges to tell them her tiger is hungry -
for ice cream. They're fresh out, so Josie sends Gary to the Lucky Lady
for ice cream and chocolate cake so they can celebrate. When he's gone
[see below], Rain asks Josie to tell her a story, about a princess. Josie
predicts the story will have a happy ending. The story unfolds, about two
owls who looked and looked but couldn't find the princess's father, so she
and her tiger came to live with Mr. and Mrs. Owl - happily ever after.
Just like us, says Rain. You're my little princess, Josie tells her with
a hug.

LOTS O' LUCK

Lucky Lady - Toni is dressed in a long slinky gown, waiting for Chris
to arrive for their date. Apparently she and Tyrone were trapped there
during the blackout. Tyrone is so busy watching her dance around by
herself, he knocks all his papers off the table. They stoop to pick them
up, and Ty runs across the photo of the two of them taken in Chicago.
Chris arrives, and views the tete-a-tete with some displeasure, but Toni
rushes to greet him with a kiss. Ty assures him he was just keeping Toni
company until Chris could get here. He shows Chris the photo; Chris
remarks that Ty and Toni have been hanging out together a lot lately.
Toni looks a little embarrassed, and Ty looks innocent.
Chris and Toni take a table. Toni tells Chris about her mother's
photo with an old boyfriend, on the wall of the Blue Parrot, and how the
club owner tried to pose her and Ty like the old photo, not realizing Ty
was just family. Ty, hovering nearby with a mug of beer, remarks how Etta
Mae didn't seem to want to talk about the guy. He pulls up a chair to
their table, then asks if they'd rather be alone. "Actually,..." Chris
starts to say - but Toni says Ty's welcome to join them. Chris grits his
teeth and asks Ty if his business with his mother's estate was settled.
Yes, says Ty - all except the mysterious key from his mother's charm
bracelet. Toni offers to make an impression and use her cop resources to
track down whatever it might open. Ty wonders if it's connected to the
father he never knew; Etta Mae might remember him, but she'd suddenly fled
the club rather than dredge up old memories. Guess we're on our own, like
the old days, Ty and Toni chuckle familiarly. Chris, barely hiding his
irritation, makes it clear that enough is enough - this is a DATE, for
pity's sake, three's a crowd... Ty finally takes the hint and leaves them
alone.

As he crosses the room, he runs into Gary. Gary shows him the papers
from Children's Services and asks if they can meet tomorrow. Ty offers to
go over them right now, and confirms that it's a good first step toward
adoption. Gary's eager to get the process started, but Ty informs him
that, even as Rain's foster parents, they have to wait 18 months before
they can even take an adoption petition to court - in the meantime, a
blood relative could come forward at any time and claim her. Gary knows
of no relatives, but thinks it's unfair to Rain that she won't have any
say in where she lives or who her family is [What kid does?]. He says
he'll start running a trace for any relatives, but if Rain lives with them
for two years and then suddenly someone comes forward and takes her away
from them, it would tear Josie to shreds.

Later, Ty spots Dana alone at a table and joins her. He apologizes
for not calling, he's been busy, and he asks her to go with him to Jake
and Vicky's wedding. Toni walks by and he obviously can't keep his eyes
off her, and Dana tells him she always feels like an also-ran with him.
Chris tells Toni he's tired of talking about Ty, and urges her to
come clean about whatever might be going on between them. Nothing, she
insists; but he claims he's been sensing some weird vibes between them,
something's been not quite right for some time now. Then let's get back
on track, she says, you're the one I think about all the time, the one I
want to share everything with. She pulls out a present she'd gotten him
when he broke his arm - it's a little silver car on a chain [a men's charm
bracelet? New one on me...]. The enclosed note reads, "Take care of
yourself, do it for me - Love always, Toni." Get the picture? she asks,
smiling. They kiss across the table.

WED'ER OR NOT

Hospital - After power is restored and Jake and Lila have found Vicky
and Shane trapped on the room, Lila helps Shane to the elevator and back
to the lobby. He carps at her for bringing Jake along to rescue Vicky.
Lila notes that he seems to be burning up with fever, and begs him to get
himself checked out. He refuses treatment, but he can barely stand, so
she helps him to a bench. He seems a little woozy from the fever, and
keeps asking if Vicky's all right. She's fine, says Lila, let's at least
get your fever down. He agrees to let her help him to his office. On the
way, he babbles about stopping Vicky from marrying Jake, I have a reason
to live now. He pager beeps, and Lila convinces him to answer it from his
office [see below].
Meanwhile, Jake and Vicky are exiting the hospital. Jake drapes his
jacket around his frozen fiancee, and complains that Shane's pursuit of
her is getting intolerable. Vicky has to restrain him from rushing back
in to confront Shane. Jake brings up Lila's insinuation that something
went on between them at their Halloween/engagement party. Unsure how much
he knew [not much], Vicky explains that Shane was making yet another pitch
for her not to marry Jake, but she'd made it clear she loved Jake and only
Jake, she was going to be his wife, and Shane should give it up. What
would it take for him to get the message, Jake wonders. Who cares, says
Vicky, and they agree not to mention the "S" word anymore. Vicky wants to
go home, the boys are over at Michael's so they'll have the house to
themselves. Jake agrees, but says he'd promised Paulina to stop by the
Cory mansion once he'd found Vicky. They exit.

Cory mansion - Paulina comes downstairs and tells Matt that Rachel's
still unconscious, Carl's calling the hospital [anyone we know?], and
Paulina is about to call Joe to report Rachel's return. She has to stop
Matt from rushing up to see Rachel - Carl still blames him for the whole
Nikos/Hadley mess, and doesn't want him upsetting his mother.
Later, after considerable pacing, Matt starts up the stairs - then
reconsiders, grabs his coat and starts for the door. Paulina catches him
and urges him to at least wait until Rachel wakes up, but Matt doesn't
feel like hanging around to get rejected again. Tell her I love her, he
asks Paulina, then exits.
On his way out, Matt passes Jake and Vicky on their way in. Paulina
fills them in on how they'd found Rachel unconscious on the terrace as
soon as the lights came back on, no explanation yet. Jake figures Nikos
will have the answers if anyone can find him. He says he needs to see
Amanda about tomorrow's front page; Paulina says she's in the library, go
easy on her; Jake exits.
Left alone, Paulina pours a drink and offers Vicky one, but she
declines. Paulina then asks how the wedding plans are going. Vicky
confides that Shane gets more intense every day as the wedding approaches,
like tonight during the blackout when they were trapped alone together on
the hospital roof. Paulina asks if it's just Shane's problem, or does
Vicky still have feelings for Shane, as well? Vicky insists it's just
memories - but when they're together it's hard to stifle the old feelings.
Paulina admits she still had feelings for Jake when she married Joe, so
much that she almost canceled the wedding. She'd never told Joe, not
wanting to hurt him over nothing, and advises Vicky not to tell Jake,
either. Vicky insists that in her heart she really wants to be married to
Jake. Then trust those feelings, it'll all work out, Paulina reassures
her. Vicky embraces her gratefully - then looks up and sees Shane
standing in the entryway, gazing at her intensely.
Shane reports that Rachel's on an IV, someone had given her a
powerful sedative which is why she's still unconscious, and the nurse will
stay with her all night.  Vicky starts to go up to spend time with Carl;
Shane stops her to ask if she's all right. I'm fine, she answers a little
too cheerfully, then exits. Paulina tells Shane he looks awful. He
claims he's just been fighting a bug, it's not contagious. He asks how
she's doing. As always, playing peacemaker, trying to stay above the
fray, she replies. He reminds her to whistle for him if she needs to
talk. Same here, she offers - I heard about you and Vicky being stuck on
the hospital roof. He's sure tonight's events prove Vicky still loves
him, she can't possible marry Jake after that. They already consider
themselves married, insists Paulina, the kids consider themselves a family
- if you really love her, you have to let her go. They're not married
yet, Shane replies, all I need is time alone with Vicky - she'll cancel
the wedding once she realizes she still loves me. You're a sick man,
snaps Jake, returning in time to hear the last comment. He accuses Shane
of following Vicky here. I'm here to treat Rachel, Shane retorts. Jake
threatens a restraining order if Shane doesn't stop chasing all over town
after Vicky. Shane insinuates that Jake's only worried because he knows
Vicky loves Shane and belongs with him. Wrong, says Vicky, returning - I
love Jake with all my heart, and we'll be married in a week. There's your
answer, Jake tells him. He apologizes to Paulina for the fuss, as he and
Vicky exit.
In the foyer, Jake repeats to Vicky that marrying her is making him
happier than he's ever been. Me, too, says Vicky; she suggests they pick
up something to eat on the way home. Jake says he has to stop at the
Herald first, and they decide that Vicky will go to Carlinos and order
take-out pizza, and Jake will meet her there to go home together. They
exit.
As Jake and Vicky leave, Shane insists to Paulina that it just
wouldn't be right if Vicky married Jake - I just have to find a way to
make her see it. Give it up and leave them alone, Paulina pleads - the
only way Vicky isn't walking down the aisle with Jake is if she gets
kidnaped. Don't worry, says Shane, I know now what I have to do...
[Uh-oh!]

FOR YOUR MISINFORMATION...

Town Square - Matt runs into Lila, and they sit on a bench to talk.
She's happy to hear that Rachel's back, but sympathizes that Carl won't
let him see her. That won't last forever, he assures her. He invites her
for dessert, but she says it's late and takes a rain check. She exits,
and Matt spots Shane crossing the square. He asks about Rachel's
condition. Shane reports she's suffering from exhaustion and dehydration,
but should recover with her family around her. Matt notes that he doesn't
look well. Just tired, says Shane.

Carlinos - Somehow, Matt and Lila end up at Carlinos. Lila warns him
that interfering in other people's lives can cause more trouble than it
prevents. Matt wonders whether the ends don't justify the means - if
someone you love is headed for disaster, how can you not interfere? Lila
observes, they're a lot alike; she offers him a quarter to call home to
check on his mother. He smiles and heads for the phones. Lila spots
Vicky entering, and turns away so she won't notice her. She sneaks a peek
as Vicky trots in and orders a pizza. Angelo hands her a message received
by phone - "Meet me at the marina, on "The Turning Point,"" no signature.
He said you'd know who it was, says Angelo. Jake, she sighs with a smile.

Elsewhere (A Long Way Away) - An unseen woman opens and studies an
invitation to Vicky's wedding. Then she lays it down along with an
airline ticket: Beijing to Bay City. [!]

Carlinos - Some time later, Jake enters with a flourish and a big
bouquet of flowers, expecting to meet Vicky. Paulina informs him she'd
ordered a pizza, got a message, and left. But we were supposed to meet
here, says Jake, puzzled.

Marina - Aboard the "Turning Point," Shane has the cabin prepared
with an elegant table for two, complete with candles. As he lights the
candles, he hears a noise from the doorway and looks up, staring as a pair
of stockinged legs and high heels descends. FADE TO BLACK...

(Boy - if candles hadn't been invented, we almost wouldn't have had a show
today - they'd be my nomination for the Ultimate Soap Prop.)
