STRANGER IN THE NIGHT

Lila's Place - Lila is at the window, spooked by the sound of
explosions in the night. Donna knocks at her door, she's come to talk
Lila into keeping her ex away from Vicky.  Another explosion rattles Lila;
Donna explains that a nearby church is being demolished [see below], now
what about Shane? You've come to the wrong person, says Lila; I've
learned my lesson, no more tricks on Shane; besides, Jake and Vicky are
nearly married. She's surprised when Donna tells her Shane and Vicky were
kissing at her engagement party. Lila thinks Donna just wants to avoid a
scandal, but Donna claims her only concern is Jake and Vicky's happiness,
as well as Steven & Kirkland [the only kids in B.C. still mentioned
regularly]. Donna promises Lila she'll make it financially worth her
while - why make knock-offs of designer clothes, when you can buy the
originals? Lila kicks her out [good for her! What do you know - there's
a real person in there!].
Later, Lila calls Shane at the hospital to tell him about Donna's
visit, but he's off duty. She asks them to beep him and have him call her
[see below].

Vicky's Cottage - Shane shows up at Vicky's door, almost an echo of
her earlier dream. She claims the kids are asleep upstairs (although we
haven't seen them), and steps out on the porch to talk. Despite her
protests of her devotion to Jake, Shane reminds her of their recent kiss
and begs her to call off her wedding to Jake - it's Shane she loves, and
marrying Jake would be like cheating on him since he'd never have her
heart. She threatens to call Cass and get a restraining order to keep him
from stalking her. [Just kidding.] Actually, she tells him she cares for
him, but if he doesn't stop chasing her she'll have to stop seeing him.
He insists their feelings for each other are stronger than ever, and asks
for one day with her the way they used to be - after that, if she still
wants to marry Jake, he'll walk away. To her credit, she refuses to play
his game; she tries to convince him that their time together has come and
gone, she's made her decision, and he'll just have to respect it if he
really wants her to be happy. He says it'll never be over between them -
even if something should happen to one of us [Note: foreshadowing???],
which she thinks is an odd thing to say. Then this is good-bye, she says,
I can't see you anymore. She goes inside and closes the door, looking
distressed. This isn't good-bye, not yet, he says; I love you forever.
He turns away, then appears to be overcome with fatigue and props himself
against the porch column.
Inside, Vicky paces around in the dark waiting for Jake to return
[see below]. She tries calling him at the paper, but they tell her he had
to go out on an emergency. She goes back out to the porch, and finds
Shane still there. She tells him he has to leave; he tries to hide that
he can scarcely move, but she sees him collapsing and rushes to prop him
up, looking worried. Shane claims he's just weak from skipping lunch.
Donna arrives and blasts Shane for chasing an engaged woman, demanding
that Vicky get rid of him, why doesn't he go back to Lila, the woman who
loves him. He manages to gather the strength to walk to his car. Donna
wonders accusingly, what would have happened if she hadn't interrupted
them. I don't know, Vicky answers as she watches Shane leave - something
is very wrong [see below].

Lila's place - Lila has gone to bed, but is awakened by a knock on
her door - it's Shane. She thinks he's answering her message, it wasn't
this urgent - but he says he's off duty, wasn't wearing his beeper. She
tells him about Donna's visit; yeah, we already ran into each other, Shane
informs her, but that's not why I'm here - I wanted to talk about us. Lila
helps a weakened Shane to the couch, worried about him. He refuses a
glass of water, and grimly announces that he has to set things right
between them.

DANCING LESSON

Harrison Suite - With a photo of Grant stuck to her forehead, Cindy
has lit incense and candles around the totem, woven a jasmine lei to hang
around her neck, has rhythmic tribal music playing, and is reading through
the final instructions in her occult ritual instruction book, studying the
ceremony that will bind her beloved to her permanently. She puts down the
book and begins to dance counterclockwise around the totem. Paulina
knocks on the door; Cindy shuts off the music and says it's not a good
time, but Paulina is insistent. Cindy gathers up all the paraphernalia
and dumps it in the bedroom, wraps herself in a robe, and answers the
door. Brushing back her hair, she realizes she still has the photo on her
forehead - she claps her hand over it, claiming she has a headache, and
gets rid of it unnoticed. Paulina offers to give her a neckrub, but Cindy
turns chilly - I don't trust you, not since you told your police captain
hubby that I gave you those illegal drugs, just because I was trying to
help a friend! Cindy doesn't want to end up in jail - Paulina promises
Joe will cut her a deal. Yeah, if I testify against my husband, Cindy
sneers. Paulina says she knows Grant was just using Cindy to get the
captain's wife hooked on drugs, but Cindy could go to jail for possession
if she refuses to put the blame on Grant where it belongs. Rain's mother
died because of those drugs, she pleads, I want those drugs off the street
before they kill someone else, and Grant is the only link to the pusher.
She promises Cindy would have immunity; Cindy sympathizes, but says she
loves Grant too much to squeal on him. Paulina tries to convince her that
Grant isn't worth the sacrifice, he's just out for himself, but Cindy
figures they're two of a kind.. He's not so bad, she adds, over half of
the town elected him mayor! No comment, Paulina responds. Cindy admits
she'd hoped Grant would love her if she got pregnant. Paulina sympathizes
over her recent miscarriage; Cindy starts laughing, and confesses it was
just a publicity stunt - "I'm sterile as surgical gloves." Paulina is
appalled at how Grant used her just to get votes. I can't let Grant go to
prison, sniffs Cindy, I'm nothing without him. Paulina vows not to let
Cindy sell herself down the river to protect a rat like Grant [see below].

DUELING PHONES

Police Station - Joe lets Grant cool his heels in his office for a
while, then goes in to needle him about the mysterious drug pusher. Grant
tries to claim Executive Privilege; that's just for the President of the
U.S., Joe laughs. I'm calling my lawyer, says Grant, dialing his cell
phone. Good, I'll use the time to call the press, Joe replies, dialing
his desk phone; he imagines the headline: "Law-and-Order Mayor Linked to
Drug Dealer." I'll sue you for slander, snorts Grant. It'll be worth it
to see you kicked out of office, Joe retorts. They stare each other down,
then Joe suggests they keep the conversation just between them, for now.
Grant caves in and hangs up, and Joe does the same. Joe asks about where
he got the drugs he gave Paulina. Grant claims he just brought Paulina a
present from his generous wife, Cindy. Joe shows him a photo of Rain, the
now-motherless child staying with Josie and Gary. Tragic, frowns Grant
(incapable of shame or guilt) - she should really be in foster care. She's
under police protection, Joe informs him. The phone rings - it's Adams,
telling Joe they just got a call that there were possible injuries at the
church demolition site. Get over there with a rescue squad and keep me
posted, Joe orders. You're busy, we can do this tomorrow, Grant suggests
a little too eagerly, his hand on the doorknob. Not so fast, says Joe -
first, tell me about "Popper." Grant squirms, but claims ignorance. Joe
can't wait to haul the guy in and see if he'd be willing to cut a deal, a
reduced sentence in exchange for bringing down the Mayor. Who'd believe a
pusher, scoffs Grant. What if the mayor's wife backed him up, Joe
suggests - or do you think Cindy would go to jail to protect you? Grant
threatens to go to the press and publicize that Joe's wife is a drug
addict who nearly killed the mayor's son while she was high. Sensing
Grant isn't about to talk, Joe releases him - don't leave town, he warns.
Why would I do that - I run it, smirks Grant, exiting [see below].

KA-BOOOOOOOM!!!!!

All Souls Church - After the latest explosion, Carl digs through the
rubble to where he'd lost contact with Rachel's hand (unaware that Alex
has come in the back way and carried the unconscious Rachel to safety).
As Carl wanders through the ruins with his flashlight looking for his
wife, another explosion sends a pile of rubble pouring down on him.
Outside, amid a crowd with picket signs, a TV reporter on the scene
is telling his audience that the church is coming down despite protests
from the Historical Society. Matt and Amanda arrive and try to convince
the foreman to stop blasting until they can make sure their mom isn't
trapped inside; but he figures they're just protesters trying to delay the
demolition - we checked thoroughly, everyone was out, he asserts [famous
last words]. Gary arrives as the foreman finally orders the blasting
stopped until the cops can clear out the troublemakers. Gary says he was
supposed to meet Carl here; Jake arrives and tells them he got a call from
a guy named Wally who claimed Rachel was in the church with a hurt ankle.
Alexander killed my mother, whimpers Amanda. Gary describes Carl to the
foreman, asks if anyone saw him. The foreman remembers seeing him with a
homeless guy outside, but the building was clear when the blasting began.
Jake finds out that Carl's limo driver saw him enter the church just
before the blasting started. [But did she call 9-1-1? Did she alert the
foreman?  NoooOOOOOOOOooooo!] Gary suspects Carl may be trapped inside;
Rachel, too, according to my source, Jake informs him. They bolt for the
church ruins, eluding the foreman, who manages to stop Matt and Amanda
from following. Matt reassures Amanda that Alex has too much to lose if
Rachel was hurt, no way would he leave her in there to die - but it's
entirely possible that Carl is inside. Matt leaps a barrier and follows
Gary and Jake, and only Amanda can't get through. She begs the foreman to
send in some workers to help the guys search, but he says it's too
unstable, he won't risk their lives.
Inside, Gary and Jake dig through the rubble. Matt is sure Rachel is
o.k., Alex would never let her be hurt. They pump him for anything he
might know; Alex never admitted he took Rachel, says Matt, but he promised
to bring her to the house tonight. Jake thinks it sounds like a
confession of guilt to him; besides, he didn't bring her back, now did he?
[How would they know? They've been out running around all night.]
Besides, Matt adds, all Alex's actions have been directed at Carl so far -
he's never hurt anyone else, I'm sure Mom is safe. Gary figures Alex was
using Rachel as bait to lure Carl to the church to get blowed up real
good. They finally break through a wall of rubble, promptly bringing down
a shower of dirt and stones on them, nothing major. They brush themselves
off and shine their flashlights around in the dark, calling out for Carl.
Adams arrives to clear out the trespassers, and Gary talks him into
helping them search until the rescue team can take over. They soon find
Carl unconscious under a pile of debris - but no Rachel. They manage to
extricate Carl and carry him to a flat place to revive him. He stirs
briefly, calling out for Rachel, then passes out again.
Later, outside the church, the newsman is reporting on the possible
injuries. Gary pulls out his cell phone and calls Joe to tell him about
Carl being injured looking for Rachel - no sign of her, Carl's being taken
to the hospital, not critical but definitely in shock. Thought you should
tell Paulina, he adds.
Police Station - Paulina arrives at Joe's office just as he's hanging
up, and reports that Cindy probably won't testify against Grant, she loves
him too much, would rather go to jail herself. That's o.k., at least you
tried, we'll get him anyway, Joe reassures her. Then he tells her about
Carl's injury, we have to go to the hospital - no, no word on Rachel.

BACK TO THE LAIR

Harrison Suite - Dressed in a long, slinky blue gown, Cindy gives one
extra plea to the totem for protection, then stuffs it behind a cushion
and lolls on the sofa as Grant arrives home. He tells her Joe tried to
back him into a corner but it was just a fishing expedition, the cops have
nothing! He immediately becomes enraptured by her, falling under the
totem's spell. He's all over Cindy, but she manages to put him off long
enough to spill her bad news: Paulina was here to warn her, she could go
to jail on a drug charge if she doesn't testify against Grant. What
drugs?  Do you see any drugs? quips Grant innocently - it'll never happen;
trust me, I'm a lawyer - as long as we deny everything, we're in the
clear, they have no proof! He oozes her to the bedroom, where they sink
out of sight below the frame...

HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY

Vicky's Cottage - Donna and Vicky have gone inside for a cup of tea,
and Donna (recalling her own disaster with Matt and Michael) begs her to
put Shane in the past and not let him hang around and ruin her happiness
with Jake. Vicky assures her she and Jake are solid - but her
relationship with Shane never actually ran its course, it ended abruptly,
and Shane is having trouble accepting it. Jake arrives home, still
brushing off the dust. He'd left a message on Vicky's machine, but she
hadn't played it yet. Donna is delighted at his arrival and exits to give
the lovebirds their privacy. Jake starts to tell Vicky about his
adventure, but she silences him, perching on his lap, just needing him to
hold her.
Later, he reports on rescuing Carl, who's now in the hospital - Carl
keeps calling out for Rachel, but we didn't find any trace of her in the
building. All because of Felicia's accident, observes Vicky. Talking
about Alex (but thinking about Shane), Vicky muses at how different people
react to losing someone they love.  Jake feels lucky they have each other;
Vicky vows to love him forever.

AFTERMATH

Hospital - Matt has been back to the demolition site, no trace of
Rachel or Alex, and the church has been leveled. Amanda reports that Carl
is still unconscious, no diagnosis, one of us should be with him when he
wakes up. Knowing how much Carl hates Matt, they figure it should be
Amanda. Carl awakens and calls out for Rachel, and Amanda rushes in.
Where's Rachel, he pleads over and over. She tells Carl they're at the
hospital, he was the only one injured, assuring him that Rachel wasn't in
the church. But Carl attests that he'd seen Rachel there - he pulls out
his I.V. to go back and look for her, until Amanda informs him the church
has been blasted to bits. You left her in that tomb, moans Carl,
collapsing in grief. She's dead! Amanda wails. Fade to Black...

Happy Armistice Day,
