Here is the Veterans' Day Weekend update for Another World for Friday,
November 8, 1996:

* Maggie wavers in her rebellion
* Ryan breaks out
* Carl and Bobby form an alliance, re: Gun-boy
* Riley plays Lassie, but no Timmy in sight, at cops' wedding

Cory Mansion - Carl brings Rachel a peace offering, a bird figurine
[they seem awfully fond of figurines lately in ol' B.C.] on a ribbon. A
pigeon, she guesses. It's a dove, love, he corrects her, forgive me?
It's a start, she answers, but she's still upset at his pattern: initiate
a row with Grant, beg her forgiveness, then repeat the whole thing. She
wants it to stop, this hate is controlling his life, he has to let go of
it. She urges him to ignore Grant, refuse to take his calls, Grant will
lay off once Carl stops responding. Carl worries about giving Grant free
reign to cause trouble, but promises to try harder not to let Grant goad
him. He announces he's off to Vicky's to apologize for the scene they had
at her party. Rachel reminds him Grant's probably edgy with Mercer on the
loose. Carl muses whether Grant and Mercer may not be closer than they
let on? He exits [see below].

Out on the terrace, Rafael and Maggie arrive secretly so she can pack
some things for their elopement. She regrets she can't say good-bye to
Cass; leave him a note, Raphael suggests. We'll finally be free, we'll be
happy forever, he assures her with a hug. Forever, she repeats, less
confidently. While he waits, she goes in to pack, and runs into Rachel.
Rachel invites her to go out to dinner, but Maggie says she has plans;
besides, she doesn't want another confrontation or lecture. Rachel says
she just wants what's best for Maggie, your choices lately have been
pretty bizarre [no joke]. As for giving her her trust fund early, money
won't make you happy, Rachel continues, just look at Cecile. I'm smarter
than Cecile, says Maggie [!], and I'd rather rely on money than love, love
only causes hurt. We all love you, says Rachel, and when you decide to
listen, I'll be here. She exits. But I won't, Maggie says sadly. She
goes back outside and tells Raphael she's having second thoughts about
leaving her life and family behind, it's all so final. I thought this was
what you wanted, he tells her, you've changed my life, I know we can be
happy together - we have the same dreams, I love you. She decides to go
through with their plans, but he's nervous that Carl could come back and
catch him (and tear him limb from limb). I'll meet you on Center Street,
he tells her, promise you'll be there. Ten minutes, she promises. She
goes back in to pack, and he exits.
Later she struggles down the front stairs with a suitcase. She stops
by the table in the foyer to leave a note for Carl and Rachel. Rachel
catches her and demands to know where she's going...

Vicky's (Haunted) House - Jake comes over with a surprise for Vicky.
[The surprise is, it's not another figurine!] It's a shopping bag
containing an old paste tiara and ribbon sash, relics from an old
Homecoming back in Lassiter. Even surly Bobby has to laugh when she puts
them on and gives a queenly wave. Jake hopes it will help convince her to
go on their trip. They laugh over their old wild times as kids - we left
as losers, says Jake, but we're going back as winners - aren't we, Vicky?
Before she can answer, there's a knock at the door. It's Carl; as he
enters, Bobby greets him and exits. Carl apologizes for ditching Vicky's
party, and she thanks him for intercepting Grant outside - he hasn't been
back since. Pleased at this news, Carl remarks to Jake on the Herald's
recent series on Cody Mercer, could I get some back issues? Sure, for a
nominal fee, answers Jake, talk to Matt or Chris Madison. (Carl picks
Chris, for some reason...) Carl exits; outside, Bobby stops him and asks
for a word. I have an appointment at Carlinos, he says pointedly, but I
can give you a minute or two. Inside, Jake continues to press Vicky for
her decision about their trip to Lassiter.
In the attic, Ryan paces around, frustrated - I've got to get to you,
Vicky, he mutters. He presses up to the door; to his delight, his hand
passes through it, up to his arm! But then it gets stuck. Now, what?? he
frets. With some effort, he manages to pull it back in.
Back on the porch, Bobby asks Carl if Grant might follow Vicky if she
went out of town. He has before, Carl informs him. She's planning an
overnight trip, says Bobby, and Grant's been hostile, even reckless
lately. Carl is disturbed, but says there's not much he can do, what with
his promise to Rachel; *my* hands are tied, he says mysteriously... He
exits. Mine aren't, Bobby murmurs (as Carl knew he would). He goes back
inside, to find Jake and Vicky cozily curled on the sofa, cracking up over
Jake's plans for once they hit Lassiter. Bobby tells Vicky he has to go
into town, he'll be back in the morning. He exits, but Jake notices the
way he and Vicky exchanged a look - what's going on, he asks her with a
sigh. She tries to reassure him, she likes Bobby but it's not what you
think. She finally admits that knowing Bobby has Ryan's eyes makes it
seem like a part of Ryan is still with her. So it's not Bobby coming
between us, it's Ryan, Jake concludes. I'll always love Ryan, she
answers. He says forget the remark, ignore his jealousy, he just wishes
he were enough to make her happy. She tells him she was doing better, she
was happy moving into her house, but lately she's been feeling more
unsettled - I should be missing him less by now, shouldn't I? This was a
tough year, you lost Bridget, Jake reminds her. And finding out about
Bobby's eyes threw me, she agrees, not to mention Grant's antics. Jake
encourages her to come to Lassiter to get her bearings - if not for you,
do it for me, I need to compare my wild past with what I've become. In
one day? she teases. Easy fix, he answers - we could spend the night...
She giggles.
In the attic, Ryan sits brooding. Kirk enters - you look tired, he
tells Ryan. No, I just need to get out of here, Ryan answers. But Kirk
can't hear him. Oh, he shouts - I wish you could hear me - because
you're the only person in the whole world that can help me! Ryan watches
Kirk playing with his ball and glove. You have to help me, says Ryan,
you have to get your mom up here, I have to see her and I can't get out -
I can't walk through walls, or float, or anything else I'm supposed to be
able to do...! No response. Gotta go, says Kirk suddenly. He gets up
and dashes out - Ryan tries to stop him, but Kirk closes the door behind
him. I hate when that happens, Ryan jokes grimly. He decides to take
one more try. He focuses on the door, walks towards it - and pops
through, to his amazement.

Carlinos' - Grant is still stuffed in the dumpster out back, where
Mercer left him, hands tied and mouth taped [he never looked lovelier!].
He manages to find the jagged edge of a can lid, and starts sawing at the
ropes around his wrists. Angelo comes out of the restaurant with a bag
of garbage and hears the noise, but thinks it's just some scavenger [!],
and quickly leaves.
Inside, Carl meets Chris, who gives him some back issues of the
Herald plus a file on Josie's rescue. Carl claims he's writing a mystery
novel [isn't everyone?], with a satisfying ending, but Chris isn't
convinced. You'll be well rewarded, says Carl, spotting Bobby entering -
I have another appointment, gotta go. Bobby greets Carl, both admitting
this isn't a chance meeting. Bobby offers to help with Grant, but he
needs more info. Carl shows him the info he just got from Chris. Grant
only cares about two things, he says - his reputation, and his son. Carl
confides his suspicions about Grant and Mercer, it could have been a scam
to boost Grant's reputation, and maybe help him get his son back - and
Mercer gets Grant's $1 million. Carl suspects Grant may be planning a
repeat performance, once again involving Mercer. Then Kirk and Vicky are
both in danger, Bobby realizes. He'll kill to get what he wants, says
Carl, he has before. Bobby offers to help stop Grant, so Carl doesn't
have to break his word to Rachel. I'm at Vicky's all the time, he says,
Grant doesn't like it, but I don't think he's suspicious, I can keep an
*eye* on him [get it?]. You're a good man, says Carl. They shake hands,
and Carl exits with his stack of newspapers. Chris has been watching
their conversation; he promptly joins Bobby. How well do you know Carl,
he asks. Better than I know you, Bobby retorts. Chris introduces
himself, and warns Bobby to be careful dealing with Carl.
Outside, Carl spots Grant's car. He sees Angelo and asks what it's
doing here. It's been here all day, says Angelo, he's lucky it hasn't
been towed.
Meanwhile, in the dumpster, Grant manages to free his hands and pull
the tape from his mouth [pity], then he goes to work to free his ankles.
Once he's loose, he clambers out of the dumpster, pulls a banana peel from
his pocket and brushes off the other garbage [hee-hee!], then heads for
his car. He finds his gun and puts it on the seat beside him, then drives
away - not noticing the dark figure hiding under a blanket on the floor of
the back seat - it's Carl!

Hudson Farm - Donna angrily confronts the florist (Mercer) sampling
the good champaign out by the front porch. He pulls a gun on her and
hustles her out of sight, leaving something (I couldn't tell what) on the
ground where they struggled.
Inside the house, Gary tries to convince Josie it would be safer to
bag the wedding and flee with him under police escort, before Mercer can
find them and try again. She refuses to let Mercer ruin their plans, she
feels safe here surrounded by their cop friends, and she shows him her
good-luck necklace, the unicorn figurine from Sharlene. She's not leaving
until they're married, can't wait. He reluctantly agrees, and exits to
let her get dressed. The necklace drops ominously to the floor, and she
picks it up, looking distressed.
Having stashed Donna, Mercer returns with his rifle kit and the
bottle of champaign he's been swigging. He enters the barn, which is set
up for the wedding (but ridiculously, no one is guarding it). He climbs
the ladder and settles into the hayloft to have another drink and await
the festivities, chuckling demonically.
Josie and Sharlene share a mother-daughter talk while Josie gets
ready. Josie tells her mom that the panic has passed, she's feeling much
better. I don't have any magic words, says Shar, just be good to each
other, be happy being Mrs. Sinclair, but don't lose sight of your own
identity. We bring out the best in each other, Josie claims [jury's still
out on that one], and someday I know you'll find an even stronger love for
yourself. Don't worry about me, this is your day, says Shar. (Close-up
of unicorn figurine on dresser)
Outside, Gary is pacing nervously. Joe comes up and tells him no
sign of Mercer, so far so good. Paulina comes out, and Gary sends her
back in to tell Josie he's ready. She exits; Gary and Joe join Mike, John
and the police chaplain ("I don't often get to do weddings, usually my
duties are less happy") in the barn. Somehow Riley follows them in. Mike
ushers the dog out so he won't cause a fuss; but Riley slips back in and
starts sniffing at the ladder. Mercer sinks down out of sight in the
hayloft. Riley starts barking, and Mercer pulls out a gun... Gary looks
up at the hayloft suspiciously, but Mike assures them it's just bats, no
cause for alarm. [oh, puh-leeze!] He drags Riley back out. Paulina
appears at the door and tells them to take their places, time for the
ceremony. Ridiculously, no one actually bothers to check the hayloft.
[How do any of "Bay City's Finest" keep their jobs - or their lives???]
John leaves to get the bride; Mike comes back, concerned that Donna's
missing. No one else even noticed, apparently could care less; Mike says
she's probably busy, he'll save her a seat. Joe tells Gary to relax, we
checked the barn thoroughly! [If Joe doesn't get busted for this, there's
no justice...] We should've left, frets Gary; as soon as we say "I do,"
we're saying "Good-bye!" Cass enters and starts taking pictures in
between ushering, first snapping Joe and Gary.  He asks Mike about Donna;
"She's late," says Mike, "but then, she was late to all of her weddings,"
he jokes. Cass gets a shot of Gabe entering w/ Lorna (meanwhile Mercer is
assembling his rifle, complete w/ high-power scope), then escorts Sharlene
to her seat. Cass glances back up the aisle, and proudly spots beautiful
Charlie, the flower girl, catching her on film as she strews petals along
the path. He also gets a shot of Gregory the ring bearer, as he comes up
the aisle and Sharlene gives him a kiss. Joe, the Best Man [if not "Best
Cop"] smiles when Matron of Honor Paulina enters. Mercer smiles, too, as
he peers out of the hayloft and sees he has a clear view of the entrance.
Everyone is glowing as they await Josie's entrance. Sharlene rises
and motions for everyone to stand. John appears and starts down the aisle
with Josie on his arm. Josie notices Cass taking pictures and mugs for
the camera. In the hayloft, Mercer raises the rifle and takes aim. He
gets Josie's face in the cross-hairs... FREEZE FRAME.

Until next time,
