STOP HARASSING ME!
Carl/Rachel/Joe/Paulina/Grant

Grant returns from Canada to find his answering machine filled with

messages. As he plays them, he finds they're all from Carl, each one

more annoyed and accusing than the last, demanding the truth about where

Grant disappeared to. Grant angrily rips the answering machine off the desk.

Meanwhile, Carl sits on the floor in the Cory living room with a box
of stuff from Ryan's apartment. He bounces Ryan's old baseball against
the baseboard, and mourns the loss of his All-American son who had such
promise. Paulina and Joe drop by, and Rachel tells them Carl's been in a
real funk lately, maybe you can help snap him out of it. Carl finds
something in the box, and shows them a beaded Indian belt Ryan must have
made at camp as a kid. Grant's name is spelled out in beads on the belt.

Paulina tries to comfort him, but he babbles about Ryan, unable to carry
on a real conversation. Rachel changes the subject and asks Joe about the
bomb threat investigation. No progress, says Joe, the captain will cancel
tomorrow night's gala if the maniac isn't caught by then. Carl bounces
the baseball at Rachel, who deftly snags it and observes that the gala is
in Ryan's honor, it would be a shame if it were canceled. Joe and Paulina
sit and chat with Rachel, while Carl stands staring out the terrace doors,
brooding. The doorbell rings, and Paulina goes to answer it. It's Grant,
who storms in and demands that Carl stop harassing him with phone
messages. Or else - what? sneers Carl, or else you'll shoot me? Wait -
I'll turn my back! [Good one, Carl!] Grant repeats his demand that Carl
lay off. Carl says he has a present for him, and gives him the beaded
belt with his name woven in - a gift to a beloved older brother, made at
Camp Wyoming - did you two go to camp together? needles Carl. I don't
remember, snarls Grant [wait till Carl tells Vicky about that]; he takes
the belt, tells Rachel to control her husband - he's a menace. Then he
heads for the door, with Carl nipping at his heels, as Rachel watches
helplessly.

Later, after Joe and Paulina have left, Rachel finds Carl out on the

terrace, staring into the night. She wraps a cloak around his shoulders

and stands with her arm around him.

FINALLY - A SUSPECT (OR TWO)!
John/Felicia/Gabe/Jetter/Sharlene

Felicia watches as John and Jetter are hauled into the police station
in handcuffs, obviously drunk and testy. Jetter is locked in a holding
cell, and Gabe tells John to prepare to be questioned about the bomb
threats. John is bewildered, and Felicia leaps to fill him in about the
threats to blow up the hospital gala. John, still in cuffs and drunk,
tries to make a break for the door to get to the hospital, but the cops
drag him back. They cuff him to a bar against the wall until he cools
off. Gabe tells Felicia to butt out, and she asks to make a phone call.

She calls Sharlene and tells her John's here at headquarters, he needs
you. In answer to Gabe's question, John unwittingly touts Jetter's
praises as a demolitions expert. Felicia tells John she's sorry she may
have accidentally turned the cops' suspicions onto him. John drunkenly
rails against the cops for hassling Jetter on the docks just because he's
homeless; Felicia stops his tirade and again tries to explain, the cops
may be after you because I told them how mad you were about being
suspended. It finally registers with him about the bomb threats, and he
wants to know details; then he gets irate at not being told sooner. They
look up and see Rita Madison enter - Just what I needed, John mutters.

In Gabe's office, Rita demands to know why John is chained up in the
hallway. He's sobering up so we can question him, Gabe tells her. Rita
is shocked, says the board will have to be notified about John's arrest.

He's not under arrest, Gabe corrects her. Relieved, Rita says she came
down to check on the investigation. That's what we want to ask John
about, he tells her. Rita reacts with contempt: is that the best you can
do? she snorts, John and I aren't close, but I respect him. He has a
motive, says Gabe, I have to check it out.

Jetter continues to babble from the holding cell, and John offers
words of support. Felicia regains his focus and tells him she also went
to Rita and demanded he get his job back, which may have done more harm
than good. John mutters that he doesn't care anymore about his job, he
doesn't need B.C.General to give him his identity - I just want all my
well-meaning friends and family to BUTT OUT. Jetter comments to John what
a classy babe his wife is, referring to Felicia. Felicia looks miserable.

Gabe has John released and brought into his office. Josie sees this
and protests, you can't be serious! I'm always serious, he answers with
slight sarcasm. Felicia looks up and sees Sharlene arrive. John acts
offended at being considered a suspect. Gabe says he doesn't have time to
be sensitive, he's trying to prevent a disaster. Then he asks John about
Jetter. John says Jetter was shattered by Vietnam, he's had trouble
readjusting, like a hell of a lot of other vets. Gabe pegs Jetter as a
social misfit and a loose cannon. John shouts that Gabe is insane if he
thinks Jetter is the bomber. Gabe shoves him back in a chair, and notes
that John's been the cause of a lot of negative headlines about the
hospital lately, maybe some nut case read the stories and decided to teach
you all a lesson. Whatever the motive, Gabe adds, it's my job to nail the
sucker.

Felicia fills Sharlene in on what's happened with John; as he emerges
from Gabe's office, Sharlene embraces him, and Felicia steps aside to give
them some space. Sharlene apologizes for their fight earlier over selling
the farm, she got scared when he took off on his cycle, like when he used
to have combat flashbacks; all that matters is that we're together. Gabe
tells John he's free to go. Sharlene asks if he has any personal effects
to retrieve before they head home. John sees Jetter babbling incoherently
in the holding cell, and tells Sharlene he's not going home with her.

Felicia looks distressed. She listens as John tells Sharlene it's not
about the hospital, or about what happened tonight, it's about me.

Sharlene begs for a chance to help, but he refuses. I don't know where
I'm going, he says, there's something broken inside me, and going home
with you won't fix it. He walks away listlessly.

Gabe orders Jetter released and then puts a tail on him. Joe and
Paulina stop in to ask if there's any new leads. Plenty - all dead ends,
Gabe answers. I can't believe it, says Paulina. Sorry to spoil your
party, snarls Gabe, but I don't want hundreds of casualties, and no
hospital to send them to! He storms out.

THE FIRST STEP
Gary/Josie/Morgan/Courtney

Gary and Josie, on a lunch break, are eating at his apartment. She
teases him about his cooking, then says she's grateful for whatever stolen
moments they can find together. He promises their time will come, and
pulls her onto his lap, Santa-like, asking what she wants for Christmas.

She tells him, what she really wants is to go to the department Christmas
party together, out in the open; to share family festivities without
hiding, out at the farm (if they still have it). Then she tells him about
Sharlene having to sell the farm to cover John's malpractice settlement.

Gary promises they'll figure out a way to be together, and says he's
arranged for the super to bang on the radiator pipes when Gabe comes home,
as a warning. THey tease each other about which one makes more noise in
bed. Then the phone rings - it's Morgan, he needs to see Gary right away.

Morgan shows up at the station with Courtney, who's bruised and
scared. She nearly chickens out, but Morgan tries to convince her she's
doing the right thing. He isn't thrilled when Gary shows up with Josie,
but Gary says Courtney may feel more comfortable giving her statement to a
female officer. Courtney says her bruises were caused by her boyfriend
Andrew (EX-boyfriend, Morgan corrects her), but she's scared to file a
formal complaint because - he threatened to kill her. Hearing this,
Morgan has all he can do to control his rage. As he paces around, Gary
tries to keep him from exploding. Morgan wants to ride along when the
cops pick up Andrew, so he can tear him to pieces. Gary says forget it,
you can help Courtney more by showing her that not all men are violent.

Courtney tells Josie she doesn't want to see Andrew go to jail, he's not a
real criminal, he's a good person. Right, says Josie, he's no criminal,
he just beats you repeatedly and threatens your life - he needs help, and
you won't be free until you take the first step and file a complaint.

Courtney agrees and signs the statement. Gary gives her a voucher for a
women's shelter, but Morgan says no need, she's staying with me, and he
hustles her out. As they leave, she tells him she'll be fine at a
shelter, but he says no way, you're staying with me until you feel safe
again. I'll never feel safe again, she says. Morgan tells her he's proud
of the stand she took tonight. Thanks to you, she answers. He reminds
her, she's strong every day for her patients, and she can learn to be
strong for herself. She says she hopes he won't regret putting his faith
in her. Never, he answers. They head home.

Josie is wired, tells Gary she'll file the paperwork and then head
out to pick up the low-life boyfriend. Gary says he's coming along; she
says good, she doesn't trust herself with the slime, but Gary says I trust
you. They get their coats and prepare to go after Andrew. Josie's still
agitated, says it's partly because of John's interrogation, but she's glad
Gary's with her tonight. They exit.

WHERE'S GRANNY?
Vicky/Nuns/Justine/Dr. Chika/Grant

Vicky bursts into the convent cell, expecting to confront Justine -
but the cell is empty. The nuns try to dissuade her, but she frantically
demands to know where Justine is hiding. She clues in the nuns that
Justine is a dangerous killer, which is news to them. Couldn't be, they
say, this woman was far too maimed to have hurt anyone. Vicky wants to
know how Justine got to this remote location in the first place, in her
condition. It was a miracle, they tell her, she appeared out near the
gardens, she couldn't possibly have limped here on her own. Vicky is
baffled - until they mention there are railroad tracks a half mile away.

Maybe she left with her visitor, one nun tells the other. Vicky leaps at
them - it was Grant Harrison, wasn't it, she demands. She says she
understands how convincing Grant can be, but he's protecting his mother, a
sick woman who murdered her own son. The nuns say Grant warned them to
keep the woman's presence concealed from her enemies. She bricked me up
in a cellar and left me for dead, Vicky replies, then she kidnapped my
baby and shot her own son to death - so yes, you bet, I'm her enemy. The
nuns are horrified. Vicky shows them a photo of herself, Ryan and Kirk -
while Justine's at large, my son is in danger, she tells them.

The nuns conduct a search of the grounds, then Sister Mary reports
back to Vicky that Justine has apparently vanished. She's baffled,
believing Justine was too crippled to get very far, but Vicky begs for a
phone so she can warn her family of the escape. Down the road at the
general store, the sister tells her. Justine's accomplice, Dr. Chika,
overhears this from the corridor, and ducks into the shadows as Vicky
dashes out.

Grant sits alone in the dark at his place, brooding over the Indian
belt. The phone rings. He thinks it's Carl again and answers angrily,
but it's Sister Mary (from a pay phone). She says he lied to them about
how dangerous his mother was. He asks with alarm, did she hurt someone at
the convent [not an unreasonable question!]. No, answers the sister,
she's disappeared, vanished, gone, adios, history, vamoosed... Grant is
so horrified he drops the receiver.

MEANWHILE - Justine, dressed as a nun, has hitched a ride with a
truck driver. He says he's never picked up a nun before, maybe you'll
bring me luck [well, there's GOOD luck, and then there's...] - but he
looks nervous when he spots her hook-hand. He pulls up at a truck stop,
says he's not going all the way to Bay City, but he'll ask around to see
if anyone else is going that way. As he's getting out, Justine clonks him
with her hook, shoves him out onto the ground, and drives away. As she
wheels along, pedal to the metal, she snarls: Grandma's coming to get

you, Kirkland, they can't keep us apart. FREEZE FRAME.

And a Happy Holiday to us all!
