Greetings from Dayton - home of the Bosnia Peace Talks!

Here is the Another World update for Friday, November 10, 1995:

* Queen Cecile Holds Court
* Michael Calls Donna's Bluff
* Morgan Takes (Unwanted) Action to Help Courtney
* Vicky and Carl: All Trails Lead to Grant!

THE B**** IS BACK
Carl/Rachel/Cecile

Carl and Rachel arrive home after a happy visit with Amanda. Rachel
notes that Carl's been helping Alli learn chess, and Carl says he and Alli
have agreed to continue their match by computer, as he used to do with
Ryan [not always a friendly game, as I recall...]. Rachel is delighted at
the flowers he's had delivered to greet her homecoming, but Carl is irate
that the box of candy has been ravaged. I had no choice, I hate nuts,
announces Cecile from the staircase. Yes, she continues with phony
sincerity, it's so good to be home with my family. Still causing trouble,
Cecile? Carl greets her. She offers her condolences about Ryan - our
children are all we have, that's why I rushed home when Rachel called
about Maggie. Cecile reveals that on her arrival she found Maggie having
a wild party with some friends of questionable breeding. Rachel is
appalled. Yes, agrees Cecile, she needs a better class of friends. No,
says Rachel, she was grounded, wasn't supposed to have any parties at all!
Cecile claims she's here to teach Maggie all she needs to know. Carl,
shuddering at that prospect, takes his leave to go "to the office" [see
below]. After he leaves, Cecile makes some cracks about Rachel's unlikely
union with Carl - although understandable, to keep her company and
lifestyle after that nasty takeover. Why are you here, asks Rachel,
largely ignoring all the digs. Cecile maintains she's had a pang of
maternal instinct, surely Rachel understands. Rachel: "With me, it's sort
of constant." Cecile: "Well, some of us are perfect mothers, and some of
us have a life." Rachel wonders if Cecile wouldn't be more comfortable at
a hotel [hint, hint], but Cecile says she's happy right here in Jamie's
old room, you can never wear out your welcome with family[!].

[Translation: She's probably out of money, hence her plan to rope Cass
into helping her?] Don't worry about me, says Cecile cattily, you have
enough problems with your "little boy" - didn't you know, Matthew was all
set to marry Donna right here last night, but the bride was a no-show!

Later, Cecile swoops into the living room to find a workman drilling
on the terrace doors. She demands that he stop, she has some important
thinking to do, but he says Rachel's instructed him to finish before she
returns [good one, Rachel!]. He asks if she's Cecile, and pulls out a
note that some guy named Cass Winthrop called. She grabs the note; she's
annoyed by the drilling, and even more annoyed to get Cass's answering
machine. Cass, where are you? she wails, her mouth full of bonbons.

DONNA'S "NIGHTMARE" CONTINUES
Courtney/Donna/Matthew/Michael/Rachel

Courtney tells Donna she's lucky she wasn't badly hurt in the
accident. Donna doesn't want any more tests, just wants to go home; but
since she still claims to be in pain (for Matt's benefit), Courtney wants
to keep her for observation. She runs into Matt outside; he's frantic,
but she says Donna's much better, she'd love a visit from you. Donna
pretends to be groggy when he enters, apologizes for ruining their
wedding. He's just grateful for her miraculous survival - tell me every
detail, he insists. She tells him about going to Mike's to get the
cufflinks - then weaves a fantastic tale about having a flat tire (M: Why
didn't you call me?), my cell phone has been broken for weeks (M: But I
just called you a couple of days ago on it), I can get calls in but I
can't call out, then I found a farmhouse (M: But it was pitch black out in
the country at night), I heard chickens and followed the clucking, then
the nasty farmer wouldn't let me use the phone, so I went back and changed
the tire myself (M: Since when?), I was desperate to get to our wedding -
so I picked up that widget, I cranked up that thing, I lugged the nuts...

Matt buys every word, confessing that when he found her he'd had a
paranoid thought that she was maybe "pulling a Jake" [come off it, Matt,
even JAKE wasn't pulling a Jake], driving off at high speed to escape him.

He apologizes for doubting her. Mike arrives in the lobby and runs into
Courtney. She observes that he's looking in good health, and says Donna's
doing well, Matt's visiting her now. Mike approaches the door in time to
hear her telling Matt that her arms were so tired from changing the tire,
she lost control of the car and hit the tree. But I found you on the
ground - were you thrown? asks Matt. I guess so, I was in and out of
consciousness, lies Donna, I must have collapsed in the mulch until you
arrived. As they embrace, she catches sight of Mike hovering at the door.

She sends Matt out to get her a nice breakfast from The Healthy Gourmet,
the hospital food is making her sick. Out in the lobby, Matt runs into
Mike and apologizes for his drunken jealous rage last night, he was a fool
to imagine Donna would cheat on him. Don't worry about it, says Mike,
someday we'll look back on this and laugh. Matt wonders how Mike found
out about Donna's accident; Mike lies that he's here for a post-chemo
check-up. Matt encourages him to visit with Donna while he's out getting
her breakfast, and exits.

Mike goes in to see Donna: I'm glad you took my advice to lie through
your teeth, he says, I always knew you could be a world-class liar and now
you've fooled both this hospital and Matt that you're injured, even though
there's nothing wrong with you. Donna resents the characterization, upset
that he'd hung up on her when she'd called him for help after the
accident. Letting you seduce me was a big mistake, she says, Matt cares
for me like you never did, and I'd marry him this second if I could. Glad
to hear it, says Mike, you seemed to forget all about him last night.

Donna chalks it up to a momentary hallucination, and demands that Mike get
out now. A nurse comes in to take her vital signs. Get this man out of
my life - I mean, out of my room, NOW, she demands.

Matt returns with a bag of goodies, and runs into Rachel. She's
supportive, but wonders why he'd decided to elope rather than have a big
church wedding. He admits he was feeling insecure about Mike, but that's
all over, I know now Mike is no threat to what we have.

Inside, Mike apologizes for upsetting Donna and exits, a little too
readily. He runs into Rachel and Matt, and reports that Donna's doing
fine - should be back to normal in a couple of hours, he says cryptically.

As Rachel and Matt go in to visit Donna, Mike goes to a pay phone, calls
someone and asks for a small favor... Later he tracks down Courtney, and
asks her to approve a "special treatment" he has planned for Donna.

In the room, Donna tells Matt thanks for the food, but I resent being
poked and prodded and having Mike wandering in to harrass me at will, I'd
recover much faster at home with my fiance. Get me out of here, she
pleads. Rachel sympathizes with Donna's ordeal. It was a complete
nightmare from start to finish, Donna pouts, I just want to go home! I
know how you feel, says Rachel, but it's just one more night. Suddenly
Mike bursts in with the hospital chaplain. I don't need the last rites,
growls Donna. Oh, no, says Mike, I brought him here to marry you two!
Matt looks puzzled but happy; Donna is shocked, but smiles pleasantly.

THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR
Morgan/Courtney/Gary

At his place, Morgan awakens on the floor behind the sofa, and offers
Courtney a cup of coffee. But she's long gone; he finds the sheets folded
up on the sofa, and a note: had to get to work, thanks for letting me crash
here. He goes to the hospital and confronts her about leaving before he
woke up. Despite her denial, he guesses she's avoiding him so she won't
have to talk about her boyfriend beating her. She says she has to work,
and scurries away. He catches up with her later, but she still denies
she's in trouble. Morgan says he wants to meet Andy, so the guy will know
Courtney has friends looking out for her, but Courtney says no way, just
butt out. Fine, says Morgan, next time you have a midnight crisis, don't
come to my place unless you're willing to tell me the truth.

Morgan goes down to the police station, and reports to Gary that he
has a friend whose boyfriend is beating her up regularly, but she won't
admit there's a problem, I want to file a complaint against him. I've
never seen him hit her, Morgan admits, never even met the guy - but I work
in an emergency room, I know what abuse looks like. Gary sympathizes, but
unless a cop sees the assault or the friend files a complaint herself,
there's nothing the police can do. He advises Morgan to have her call me,
I can refer her to counseling, a shelter, a restraining order - but it has
to come from her. Getting her to call you won't be easy, Morgan realizes.

Back at the hospital again, Morgan overhears Courtney on the phone to
Andy: Sorry I stayed out all night, I was with a friend, you don't know
her, I'll come right home after work, I love you too. As she hangs up,
looking drained, Morgan exits sadly.

A LOCKET AND A NOTE
Vicky/Gabe/Gary/Carl/Grant

Vicky is playing with Kirk, when Justine's locket falls out of his
toys. As he grasps the fascinating necklace, she realizes its
significance. She calls the station to tell McNamara about the locket.
Gary answers, tells her Gabe's out, and takes her message that she needs
to see him in person to show him something. When Gabe gets back to the
office, Gary hands him Vicky's message, and reports no luck in the
expanded search for the locket - seems a shame to waste all this manpower
on a closed case, following a lead that's going nowhere. Gabe thanks him
for his diligence, and tosses him a cassette of bagpipe music as an
apology for disturbing him last night. That's o.k., sir, winces Gary, I
can hear it fine through the walls from your apartment. Gabe reads
Vicky's message and dials her number.

Meanwhile, Grant is musing over Justine's "I'M ALIVE" note, when
there's a knock at the door. It's Carl; Grant, fearful of another attack,
doesn't want to let him in, but Carl says coldly that it's a social call.
As Carl describes his visit with Amanda, he notices Grant secretly slip
the note into the copy of his book on the desk. Carl sneers that Amanda's
flourishing without Grant - and that she, too, was curious how a gun was
registered in her name without her knowledge and ended up at the scene of
Ryan's murder. Grant tells him to give up on these absurd notions; Carl
vows he'll never give up until the culprit guilty of his son's
cold-blooded murder is flushed from his dark, cowardly hiding place into
the light. Grant indignantly tells Carl to back off, I've suffered quite
enough. Carl: "There we disagree." The phone rings; as Grant answers it,
Carl sees him fiddling with the book to make sure the note is hidden. The
caller is Vicky; Grant responds cryptically, admits he's not alone. Vicky
accuses him of having a hooker with him, then informs him she found
Justine's locket among Kirk's toys and Grant better have a good
explanation. She hangs up on him, but Grant pretends he's agreeing to
have a meeting with someone right away. He tells Carl it was Marshall on
the line [I wish! We haven't seen him for ages!], about marketing his
book. Carl picks up the book and reads the title: "If Truth Be Told, by
Grant Harrison" - at least you haven't lost your sense of irony, he
needles him. Grant kicks him out, then takes the note out of the book and
locks it in the lap drawer of the desk. Then he grabs his coat and exits
[see below].

After Grant's gone, Carl returns, picks the lock and breaks into
Grant's suite. He searches the book: the note is gone, but he finds the
empty envelope it came in. He starts to break into the desk drawer, when
he hears keys rattling at the door. He ducks out of sight as the cleaning
lady enters. When she goes into the bedroom, Carl sneaks out, leaving the
envelope on the floor where it fell. The cleaning lady peeks out,
thinking she heard a noise, but Carl is long gone so she shrugs it off.

Grant goes over to Vicky's house. He begs her to calm down, but she
angrily accuses him of having the locket all along, why didn't you mention
it when I asked about it earlier? Grant claims he found it in his suite,
in the room Kirk had been sleeping in when Justine abducted him. Kirk
must have torn it off at the time, he claims, I kept it a secret because I
didn't want it seized as evidence, it's all I have left of my mother.

Vicky isn't impressed. The doorbell rings: He's here, she says smugly.
Who? asks Grant nervously. She opens the door: Thanks for coming so
quickly, Captain, she announces for Grant's benefit. No problem, why did
you want to see me? Gabe asks, as Grant quietly panics. FREEZE FRAME.

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
