GRANT ON EDGE
Grant/Gabe/Vicky/Steven

Captain Gabe finds Grant on the docks looking out at the water, and
urges him to come clean about what's eating him. Gabe reminisces about
how they once shot hoops till all hours when Grant's girlfriend dumped him
in prep school. Grant is only half-listening, thinking to himself: "You
can't help me, don't you understand, I shot Ryan, my own brother, you
can't forgive me for that!" Gabe grabs him by the coat lapels and insists
emphatically that Grant tell him what's wrong. Finally Grant says You're
right, I do have something to tell you: I blame myself for Ryan's death!

But then he sings the same old song about protecting Justine, now he's
lost both his mother and his brother. Gabe tries to comfort him, you
couldn't have known, unless you pulled the trigger yourself it wasn't your
fault [note irony]. Then Grant starts blaming himself for Ruby the
Hooker's death, too. There's a pattern here, he moans, I'm cursed! Then
he talks about losing his mother a second time, reminds him of the last
time... You don't think she's still alive, do you? Gabe asks, concerned.

No, Grant is sure she's dead; but he rejects Gabe's suggestion that he
have a memorial service for her, to help him heal - Gotta go, babbles
Grant, exiting abruptly.

Grant returns to his flat, puts his hand in his coat pocket, and
pulls out Justine's famous locket. He looks around for a place to put it,
finally drops it in the drawer of the lamp table by the sofa. Then he
goes to an open carton on a chair and pulls out an advance copy of his
autobiography, "If Truth Be Told" [again, note irony]. He opens it to the
dedication: "For My Brother, Ryan, with Love and Devotion." There's a
knock at the door, Grant sets the carton aside and opens the door to
Vicky. She says she needs him to babysit for Kirk while she deals with
Donna's wedding - she left Kirk in the car with Bridget so she could make
sure Grant didn't have any call girls in the apartment. Grant acts hurt
that she'd suspect such a thing, but he's happy to watch Kirk. He
examines the diaper bag she hands him, and pulls out her journal. She
snatches it away before he can read much more than Ryan's name, and starts
to exit - then turns to ask something that's been on her mind, about
Justine's locket. Grant explains uneasily that it was his only keepsake
from his mother, Spence wouldn't allow pictures of her around. He says he
gave it to Lorna on their engagement, he guesses Justine got hold of it
after that. Vicky exits; outside the door, she pauses to scribble a few
lines in the journal, then continues on her way.

Grant settles in to play trucks with Steven, then suggests coloring,
and he gets some crayons out of the lamp table drawer (leaving it slightly
open - we can see this one coming, eh?). As Steven colors, Grant mumbles
that he loves spending what time he can with Steven now - if your mommy
ever finds out what I've done, I'll never see you again. Later, Grant
calls down to room service for food specially prepared for a child. While
he's on the phone, we see Steven sitting at the end of the couch - the
drawer is open, and he's playing with the shiny locket and chain.

A NON-DATE WITH LORNA
Gabe/Lorna/Vicky

After leaving Grant, Gabe returns to the station with a large brown
sack, and demands the forensic report on Ruby's death ASAP. Lorna arrives
at the agreed-upon time for Gabe to "feed her" since her purse was
snatched. She's all ready to head out for a restaurant, but he says he
has to stay to wait for a report, I thought we'd eat right here, hope you
like Chinese. He offers her a set of chopsticks from the sack. Lorna
flirts as they eat, mentions coyly that she's heard Gabe is very focused
on work. He asks if she's been talking with Grant; she informs him, I
know Grant's your friend but he's not exactly my favorite topic. Vicky
arrives at the station and is greeted sympathetically by some of Ryan's
men, while Lorna and Gabe dine in the office. Vicky bursts in on them,
then stops short, tells them she remembers having take-out with Ryan like
this. She wants to talk to Gabe, but asks Lorna to stay, as long as their
discussion is confidential. She repeats that until she sees a body,
she'll continue to assume Justine is still alive. Lorna: "She was run
over by a train, Vicky." Vicky: "Have you ever run over a squirrel -
something gets left behind!" She tells Gabe to look for Justine's locket
as proof of her death - I'm not sure what it looks like...but I'm sure
Lorna can give you a detailed description! Gabe guesses that Grant and
Lorna must have been pretty close if he gave her a family heirloom. Lorna
squirms, talks about how Grant doesn't let anyone get close (which Vicky
confirms - my marriage was more like a hostage situation), and after they
broke up the locket disappeared - Justine playing Rachel must have taken
it. Before she gets around to describing the locket, she gets upset at
being grilled about her ex-fiance's psycho mom, says she's lost her
appetite, and walks out. Oh, well, Vicky says to Gabe with amusement,
Lorna can be difficult. So I see, answers Gabe. Vicky gives Gabe a list
she's prepared of everything she can remember about Justine - clothes,
obsessions, places she'd mentioned - she needs Gabe to read it objectively
to help piece together where Justine might be. "Pieces" being the
operative word, he remarks skeptically [aHA! He DOES have a sense of
humor!]; but he agrees to consider what she's written. As Vicky exits,
Gabe starts to read the list.

GOIN' TO THE CHAPEL?
Matt/Donna/Morgan/Courtney

After talking with Vicky, Donna returns home to Matt, who is still
upset that Donna reneged on her agreement to elope. She tells him she's
changed her mind, she wants them to elope tonight after all. Matt is
skeptical, so Donna goes down on her knees: Matthew Cory, will you marry
me? Matt is ecstatic, but has to know what changed her mind. Donna says
Vicky convinced her, after what happened to Ryan it would be foolish to
waste any more time. She says Vicky agreed to be her maid of honor, it
will be good for her recovery; but she doesn't want to be married in some
stranger's house. Matt says he doesn't care if it's in a bowling alley -
but then suggests the Cory mansion, Carl and Rachel are out of town but
wouldn't mind. Donna agrees happily, then throws him out to find a best
man and make the arrangements (and so he won't find out all her beauty
secrets). He exits joyously; she looks thoughtful.

Meanwhile - at the hospital, Morgan congratulates Courtney on the
treatment of a patient; she's pleased, and says she used a technique she
learned from John. They discuss how unfair it is that John got suspended,
and Courtney wonders if they should still go out to dinner, since they're
so shorthanded without John. Morgan convinces her, they need time off
since they've been on duty 24 hours. Courtney's beeper goes off, and she
hopes it won't ruin their plans. Later, she tells him that the page was
good news about a pediatric patient, and frets about the fallout if they'd
lost another young child. Morgan tells her to lighten up, and confirms
their date tonight. Then Matt enters, calls Morgan aside, and asks him to
be his best man - no one else knows, just Vicky, we'll have a big
reception later. Morgan agrees, but wonders why me? Matt admits he
wasn't his first choice - the original plan was to have Vicky and Ryan...

Matt's so excited he nearly forgets to give Morgan the rings for the
ceremony, but catches himself before he's out the door and hands them to
Morgan. Morgan: "I'll try not to lose these in surgery." Matt: "Uh -
that's a joke, right?" Morgan hustles him on his way, then tells Courtney
don't be mad, but this will have to be a short date...

Matt returns home and pops in on Donna as she's getting ready. She
scurries into the bathroom so he won't see her before the wedding, but he
talks her out. He playfully kisses her and pulls her onto the bed, but
she tells him to save it for the honeymoon, now leave so I can finish what
I'm doing. But first, he has a gift for her, a beautiful pair of diamond
earrings, hope you'll wear them for the ceremony. She's gratified by the
sweet gesture, and he kisses her and tells her he can't wait, don't keep
me waiting. He exits, and she thoughtfully muses over the earrings.

LEAVE ME ALONE!
Maggie/Tom'as/Pam

Volunteer Maggie hovers in the hospital lobby, waiting for Tom'as to
come on duty. She acts puzzled at his cold shoulder, says he should be
grateful for her help: they just posted the EMT exam results and he aced
it! He's still furious because she stole the exam and tricked him into
cheating - don't try to deny it. But she does deny it, swears it was an
innocent mistake, she thought it was an old exam. He calls her a big
liar, says she lies so much, it's all she does lately. Maggie insists it
isn't a lie this time, but Tom'as doesn't buy it. She casually asks if
he's told anyone what she did, which he takes as more evidence of how
self-centered she is. I could have passed on my own, he snarls, but you
never gave me that chance. She begs him not to give up on her, give me
one more chance, I still want to move in with you and Luisa like we
dreamed about, now that you'll be getting your own place with your EMT
raise. Not gonna happen, he tells her, how could I trust you enough to
live with you, when you do things like going after Nick and getting me to
cheat on my exam?

Later, Tom'as goes to confession, presumably about his cheating on
the test, it was all in Spanish (I'm much better at French) - all I got
was "muy terrible."

Pam runs into Maggie and confronts her about that phony pizza order
she called in to send to Pam's house. Maggie lies to Pam that it wasn't
her. Pam calls her a liar, which Maggie of course denies, why does
everyone hate me? Pam relents, and Maggie confides that her life is a
mess, between Cecile's arrival and Tom'as's hostility. Shelley told me
about the cheating thing, Pam sympathizes. But I know he still loves me,
says Maggie. Pam says she doesn't want their spat over Nick to come
between them, and gives Maggie a hug - Maggie looks less amiable.

THIS CALLS FOR A PARTY!
John/Josie/Mike/Luisa/Nick/Troy/Phyllis/Morgan/Courtney/Tom'as

John arrives home with the carton of stuff he had to clear out of his
office. Josie greets him, protests that his suspension wasn't fair, and
tries to cheer him up by predicting the fuss will soon blow over and he'll
be back at work. John grumbles bitterly about the hospital's ingratitude
for his sacrifice, and carries the carton upstairs to gather dust in the
attic. Michael arrives, tells Josie he got the run-around when he tried
to call John at the hospital, and demands to know what's going on? Josie
quietly fills him in on John's suspension. Mike is irate over the
hospital's action, and upset that John didn't call him for help. John
enters and takes Mike to task for discussing him behind his back. It's
nothing I haven't said to your face, says Mike. Josie exits to answer the
phone. John and Mike discuss how the press seems out to smear him; John
is sure the hospital will realize their mistake - in a few years. Mike
asks how he intends to pay off Laurie Michael's settlement without a job,
and renews his offer to give or even loan John the money to pay her off,
I'm so rich I'd never miss it. John, of course, absolutely refuses, I'll
handle it myself. Mike calls him stubborn; John reminds him sarcastically
that Mike was the one who refused all help with his leukemia until John
dragged him into the hospital. Right, Mike admits, I was stupid and you
saved my life, and no amount of money I could give you could ever repay
what I owe you. I don't need your help, John growls, back off! They
continue to argue over John's refusal to accept Mike's help. "They took
away my job, they took away who I am - what's your money gonna do about
that?" John finally shouts, stalking out. Josie returns at the tail end,
and she and Mike commiserate. Then she says the call was good news, and
she thinks she knows how to cheer John up.

Later, we see John helping Josie and Mike decorate for a
"spontaneous" [really? You should see the cake!] party for Tom'as passing
his EMT exam. Morgan and Courtney are there, agree to try their date
another time, and observe that John doesn't look too cheered up. Nick
tells Josie he'll leave if his presence would be too uncomfortable for
Tom'as, but Josie says you're family, you're staying. Phyllis and Troy
arrive with gifts; they tell Josie that Tom'as deserves a party for all
his hard work, they passed the test, too, but they didn't get a perfect
score like Tom'as.  Luisa says she wants to give Tom'as something special;
she runs out and returns with plastic vampire teeth she got for Halloween,
Josie helps her pry them out of her mouth and wrap them. Nick sees Tom'as
drive up, and they turn out the lights and hide. When Tom'as enters and
turns on the light, they all jump out and yell Surprise - as they
congratulate him, he looks uncomfortable. Tom'as tells John he doesn't
feel right about partying after what happened to John, but John says don't
be silly. Troy and Phyllis repeat their congratulations, Tom'as was
really sweating before the exam but during the test he "had all the
answers" [yuk-yuk]. Luisa gives him her precious vampire teeth, then Nick
and Mike bring in an amazingly quickly-baked cake with sparklers, which
says "Tomas Is Perfect." Tom'as interrupts their chorus of "Jolly Good
Fellow," and they quiet down to hear his "speech." You guys, he starts
with difficulty - look, I don't deserve this party. FREEZE FRAME

Until next time,
