Subject: Friday Update
Status: R

Here is the update for Another World for Friday, November
11, 1994 (Veterans Day):

Paulina gets sick; Jake gets happy
Brett and Morgan get registered; Frankie gets to interfere
Donna gets to the truth; Vicky gets an earful
Ryan and Lorna nearly get lucky
Bridget and Matt get a few lines

Brett/Morgan/Frankie

Brett and Morgan are dressed up for their appointment at
City Hall; Brett holds the bouquet Morgan gave her. Frankie
drops by to give Morgan a pep talk after his surgery on
Amanda. She sees Brett, and shrieks when she thinks they
decided to elope without telling her. They explain they're
just getting officially registered as domestic partners.
Frankie laughs at them: you're such cowards, why don't you
just get married? Brett runs nervously out of the room.
Morgan warns Frankie not to mention marriage anymore - it
sends Brett running. Cass and Frankie may be a great
example, but Brett and Morgan don't want to risk becoming a
divorce statistic. This is just so I can put Brett on my
health insurance policy, he tells her. Brett returns, and
Frankie gives them a group hug. FRANKIE: "I always cry at
domestic partnership registrations." She offers to
accompany them to be their witness, and they go to City
Hall. When they arrive, they hesitate outside a door that
says Marriage Licenses, then enter the office across the
hall. A male couple is ahead of them. When they finish,
Frankie marches Brett up to the counter with Morgan right
behind. Since Frankie is doing all the talking, the clerk
assumes she and Brett are the partners. Morgan corrects
him, and the clerk asks if they have their paperwork and
I.D. They keep answering his questions with "I do," then
rephrasing to sound less like wedding vows. The clerk
whispers to Frankie, why aren't they getting married? Their
papers are all in order, so the clerk tells them there's a
notary down the hall. No, she's right here, says Frankie.
She pulls out her notary stamp, notarizes their signatures,
and the clerk hands them a Certificate of Domestic
Partnership. FRANKIE: "I now pronounce you man and woman.
You may kiss the partner." They do so. Afterwards, Brett
seems edgy. She goes to call her parents to tell them she
just got...health insurance. Morgan tells Frankie he can
tell that Brett is miserable.

Lorna/Ryan

Ryan drops by, obviously much distressed. Lorna thinks it
was just the shock of finding Amanda in the car wreckage.
He tells her the wreck wasn't an accident. Was it Carl? she
asks. He says he has no proof of Carl's involvement. RYAN:
"I've looked the other way so often, I'm gonna need a
chiropractor." Lorna tries to share the blame because she
helped convince Ryan that Carl had really gone straight.
Ryan confesses how he crossed the line by destroying
evidence - he threw the counterfeit plate in the harbor,
when Evan tried to set up Carl to be arrested by Billy.
Lorna admires his loyalty to his father. Ryan is worried
he's been helping a killer, if Carl turns out to be
responsible for Amanda and Evan's crash. Lorna says Carl
may not be guilty; and even if he is, Evan asked for it by
threatening Carl's wife and son. As long as no one died,
let it go, she urges. But Ryan feels so guilty, he doesn't
deserve to be a cop. Lorna insists he's the most honest
person she knows. They're standing close together, and find
themselves starting to kiss, more and more passionately.
They end up on the floor, but as Lorna starts to unbutton
his shirt, he pulls away. He always screws things up, he
tells her, and he doesn't want to hurt her because she means
something to him. She guesses he's still carrying a torch
for Vicky. He insists he wasn't thinking of Vicky, but
Lorna isn't convinced. He claims he can't trust Vicky
anymore, he doesn't even know who she is, and he has to
straighten some things out with her before he can pursue
things with Lorna. So what's stopping you? she asks. He
says he has regrets about seeing what he and Vicky once
shared come to an end. Lorna thinks he should face his
destiny and confront Vicky once and for all. He gives her a
peck on the cheek and exits [see below].

Jake/Paulina

Jake has prepared a junk-food feast for Paulina, to begin
their romantic time together now that they've left Mark with
Bridget for a while. Paulina isn't in the mood, all she can
do is whimper that she misses the baby and wants him back.
Jake cradles her and tries to comfort her. He explains that
he's trying to spare her the pain of getting too close to a
baby whose real parents could come back anytime, even months
or years down the road, and take their baby back. Paulina
is inconsolable. Jake expresses surprise at her emotional
collapse, she's usually so feisty and in-control. What's
the matter with me, she sobs? [Any guesses?] He reassures
her there's nothing wrong with her, except she tries to do
too much to fix the world's problems. He apologizes for
getting on her case so much, and tries to cheer her up. She
smiles a little, but then starts to think about how
emotional she's been lately about the tiniest little things.
Suddenly she grabs for her purse, pulls out her calendar,
and confirms her suspicions: she's six days late, she could
be pregnant! Jake goes nuts, as Paulina giggles with
excitement. He announces to her belly what a terrific
father he's going to be, and claims he felt a kick. She
laughs, and they kiss. He runs around pampering and waiting
on Paulina, disappointed that she can't take the home
pregnancy test until tomorrow morning. She says no need,
it's just a formality, she's already sure. How does she
know? I feel pretty lousy most of the time - isn't it
great? They kiss and cuddle on the couch.

Vicky/Donna/Bridget/Matt

When Donna catches Vicky breast-feeding "Mark," she guesses
Vicky pulled a switcheroo on Grant. Vicky and Bridget try
to stonewall her, but she won't let it go. She's appalled
that Bridget is going along with this, but Bridget reminds
her how Donna felt about being separated from Vicky when
Vicky was born. She takes Kirk out of the fray, and Donna
gets Vicky to admit how she got the fake Kirk from his dying
mother at Marley's clinic. Donna reams Vicky out for
playing God with a baby's life, as well as forcing everyone
who cares about her to compromise their own integrity: she
has Jake lying to new wife Paulina, she's lying to Grant and
Amanda, she expects Donna to lie to Matt, and saintly
Bridget is lying to everybody, just so Vicky can get her
way. Vicky says she's just doing what she has to do to keep
Grant from taking away her baby, and Fake Kirk will have a
fantastic life with Grant and Amanda. Donna warns her that
Grant can find out the truth with a simple blood or DNA
test. Vicky insists he has no reason to check unless
someone panics and spills the beans. Donna's lies cost her
her marriage to Michael, she reminds Vicky, and she doesn't
want Vicky to lose Ryan the same way. Vicky begs her not to
tell Matt because he'll tell Amanda and spoil a perfect
plan. DONNA: "This is emotional blackmail." VICKY:
"Where do you think I learned that?" Matt bursts in
[without knocking, as usual], and sees they've been having a
serious argument. He wants to know what's going on. Donna
keeps quiet as Vicky tap-dances about how mothers and
daughters always fight. She asks about Amanda, and Matt
reports so far, so good, but the doctors are still
concerned, which worries him. He thanks Vicky for helping
out by watching Mark for Paulina, and wonders why Jake and
Paulina are so evasive about Mark's mother. Vicky goes to
check on the baby. Donna tries to make light of Vicky's
behavior, but Matt insists on knowing what they were
fighting about. Donna won't elaborate, but notes that all
the cliches are true about what parents will do to spare
their children from pain. He holds her and promises to
support her until she can tell him about it. Vicky comes
back, and Donna leaves to fix her mascara. Vicky tells Matt
she can see how good he's been for Donna, she's never been
happier. Matt warns her, she can have as many secrets as
she likes, as long as they don't hurt Donna. Donna returns,
and Matt has to leave for the studio. Vicky thanks Donna
for keeping quiet, but Donna says Matt could still figure it
out - and so could Ryan, that's why you've been avoiding
him. She urges Vicky to tell Ryan the truth; she could lose
him, but it would be worse for him to find out later. Donna
starts to leave, and runs into Ryan [see above and below] in
the doorway. She leaves them alone and exits [see below].

Jake/Donna/Paulina

As Jake continues to bounce off the walls, Paulina tells him
to make himself a soothing pot of tea while she goes
upstairs to lie down. The doorbell rings, it's Donna [see
above]. She tells him sotto voce that she found out about
the baby switch. Jake says he and Paulina have some news
that will change everything, but Donna answers that his
marriage will be over unless he ends the scam now. Paulina,
curious about the doorbell, reaches the foot of the stairs
in time to overhear the end of the conversation.

Vicky/Ryan

Vicky is surprised and happy that Ryan came over [see
above], but she's nervous about her secret and about what
Ryan might say. As they sit and talk quietly, he tells her
it's time they were completely honest with each other, about
everything. Just then, he hears the baby crying. Is that
Kirk? he asks. FREEZE FRAME.
