Here is the update for Another World for Friday, October 10, 1997 - still
no sign of Cass, they'd better be planning one heck of a birthday party
for him!

* Joe and Paulina's cabin getaway is interrupted
* Gary and Josie clash over her return to work
* Carl and Rachel search for traces of the vanished "Hadley"
* Matt, Amanda, Alex continue to bluff
* Felicia reaches an epiphany

CORY/CARLINO GETAWAY

Cory Cabin - Paulina and Joe get away for a romantic weekend alone.
Paulina starts out very tense, but eventually starts to relax. They
snuggle in front of the fireplace, and Paulina wishes they could bring
Dante and stay here forever. They're interrupted by a phone call from
Eddie in Italy. Joe is reluctant to tell Paulina what he said, but she
can see he's upset. He finally admits, Eddie told him Joe's grandfather
just died, and they want Joe to fly to Calabria for the funeral. Paulina
says she understands, and tells him to make the reservations while she
closes up the cabin. She frets that they need to make arrangements for
Dante while they're away. Joe is sorry to tell her, she can't come along
either. She assumes he's too ashamed of her weight and her drug problem
to want to parade her in front of his relatives - but he swears he wishes
she could be with him. She doesn't buy his explanation that they can't
afford two tickets to Italy; he finally admits, he knows she needs to stay
in therapy and avoid stress if she wants a full and speedy recovery. She
apologizes for worrying him when he's the one who needs comforting. He
suggests she and Dante stay with Carl and Rachel until he returns [huh! No
stress there...!]. She expects she'll be so busy with the restaurant and
Dante, she'll hardly know he's gone. He figures they have time to sit
until the fire dies out; he pulls her onto his lap, and promises to bring
her back here to the cabin and make love to her when he gets home from
Italy - shouldn't be more than a week or two...

BACK TO NORMAL?

Josie and Gary's Apartment - Gary tries to pamper Josie, who's at
home recuperating from her fall and miscarriage. She tells him she's
eager to go back to work - like tomorrow. She's anxious to get back into
a normal life again. They mourn the loss of their baby. Gary reminds her
that, when she's ready, they can still have another child. Next time
we'll do everything right, he assures her. What's that supposed to mean,
she says defensively, thinking he blames her for losing the baby (which he
sorta does). He claims, he just means next time he won't go jetting off
to the Riviera when she needs him most - but the damage has been done. He
insists he doesn't blame her, she's a great cop who did a great job - but
she could have been killed, and if she took a nice safe desk job he
wouldn't have to worry that someday he'd end up with a drawer full of
medals and no Josie. She assures him his training has enabled her to get
out of any number of dangerous situations safely, and resents his
suggestion that she should quit the force and end the career she loves.
We had this same argument before we were married, she reminds him, now
it's time to settle it. He still thinks she should have quit and joined
his P.I. business, where they can pick and choose what cases they handle,
reducing the danger. She promises to try to strike a better balance
between work and home, like lots of cops do. Half of them end up
divorced, he warns.
There's a knock at the door, it's Joe and Paulina. Joe says he needs
to see Josie about returning to work - but he ends up talking with Gary in
the living room while Paulina joins Josie in the bedroom. Josie tells
Paulina how empty she feels inside since the miscarriage, she's no longer
the same person she was before her pregnancy. She can't handle seeing the
piles of baby clothes around her anymore, a reminder of her loss. Paulina
offers to sort through them with her, and to store them at her place until
they're needed. Josie wants to be able to get on with her life, and
accepts gratefully but sadly.
Meanwhile, Gary is upset at Joe for wanting to put Josie back on the
street again so soon after her ordeal. Joe says it was Josie who called
the station, and the assignment he has in mind will keep her behind a desk
and safe. Paulina and Josie return to the living room, and Joe offers
Josie the assignment: while he's away in Italy on a family emergency, he
wants her to be acting captain. [Oh, puh-leeze.] Gary looks unhappy, and
asks Joe to give Josie time to think it over, but Joe says there really
isn't any time. Josie glares at the sulking Gary, then happily accepts
Joe's offer, it would be an honor. [Also a mistake - but they didn't ask
me...]

NOW YOU SEE HER - NOW YOU DON'T

Bayview Towers - Carl and Rachel return to "Hadley's" suite, looking
for traces of the recent tenant. Carl insists Nikos set him up, but can't
figure out how he reproduced Carl's voice for Rachel to hear. Under the
sofa cushions, Carl finds a fountain pen without a cap. Smearing his
fingers all over it and totally obliterating any possible fingerprints of
its owner, he shows it to Rachel (who doesn't recognize it), then pockets
the clue. While they continue the search, there's a knock at the door.
It's the resident from across the hall, who comes to greet her new
neighbors since the other woman moved out yesterday. Odd, note Carl and
Rachel, the concierge said the place had been empty for the last month.
The neighbor describes Hadley for them; Rachel asks if she'd ever seen a
gray-haired man with her. A man with a ponytail, Carl snidely adds, my
wife wants to know if you ever saw her with me. The neighbor, in a burst
of good sense, quickly flees. Rachel is ticked that Carl scared off their
only witness. I couldn't let her tell you about all my romantic trysts, he
sneers sarcastically. Rachel is at least grateful that the neighbor
confirmed Hadley's existence. Carl figures the concierge was paid off to
lie - but not by me. Rachel explains her wariness - I've been here
before, betrayed by people I loved, including Mac. I'm not Mac, asserts
Carl; I admit I've used women in the past, but I swear I've never once
been unfaithful to you - ironically, it was your love that changed me.
Rachel relents and they embrace; Carl tries to comfort her, but predicts
there'll be more grief to endure before they get to the bottom of this
attempt to split them up.

Nikos Suite - Felicia tells Alex she wants their wedding in Bay City
rather than Greece - partially to test whether he's willing to be flexible
or if he'll continue to demand his own way. He says he enjoys sparring
with her, but she shouldn't delude herself that she can ever win; he has a
condition of his own. He offers a compromise: they'll have two
ceremonies, one in Bay City and one in Greece, and people can attend
either one. In return, he insists on her letting him put the engagement
rock back on her finger. He vows that his love will overcome all the
character flaws she's witnessed recently. They kiss. Insistence pays
off, he smiles smugly.

FAMILY SECRETS

Cory Mansion - Amanda tells Matt how Rachel and Carl nearly caught
her at "Hadley's" suite, but she got out undetected. Matt chews her out
for taking chances. Amanda is sure Rachel is nearly convinced of Carl's
affair, and will soon return home. Matt informs her Rachel returned last
night - with Carl.  Carl is suspicious, he adds, and thinks I'm involved;
if he finds out the truth, it's us who'll be history, not Carl. Maybe we
can convince Rachel that Carl warned Hadley to clear out once Rachel
discovered their love nest, they decide. Amanda assures Matt she'd
removed all trace that Hadley ever existed, nothing can tie her to that
apartment. [Especially in view of Carl's recent stupidity; what do you
bet, he'll never make the connection with the fountain pen?]
Later, we see her dump out the contents of her briefcase looking for
her missing pen (a gift from Matt), but no luck. Matt reviews their plan:
deny everything and keep accusing Carl of infidelity. Amanda wants to
call Alex, but Matt demands she cut off all contact with the tycoon. He
ducks out, anxious to leave before Carl and Rachel return, while Amanda
stuffs everything back in her briefcase. The doorbell rings; it's
Felicia, coming by to check on Rachel in light of the news about Carl's
affair. Amanda tells her Rachel's back in town, but Carl's got her
convinced there was no affair. She asks Felicia to have a word with
Rachel; we're barely on speaking terms, Felicia reminds her. Carl and
Rachel arrive home, and find Amanda and Felicia in the foyer. Carl can
guess why Felicia's here; Felicia swears Alex didn't send her, she just
wants to talk with Rachel alone. Rachel says this isn't a good time, she
needs time alone with Carl. I know about Carl, Felicia announces
accusingly. What do you know? I haven't done a damned thing, Carl snaps,
then he exits to the living room. Amanda again advises Rachel to throw
Carl out; while Rachel and Felicia stare each other down, Amanda returns
to the living room to get her briefcase to take with her to the Herald.
In the living room, Carl is studying the found pen thoughtfully -
then he asks Amanda what's going on with her and Nikos. She spots the pen
and it throws her briefly. Carl suggests Nikos is cleverly using her
interviews to elicit intimate family information from her - help me prove
that I've never met this Hadley woman, what have you told Nikos? Sorry,
you're on your own, Amanda blusters, you've cheated on my mother and
caused her enormous pain; if you really cared for her, you'd leave now
before she gets hurt anymore!
Meanwhile, Felicia and Rachel sit on the staircase and talk. Rachel
claims Carl isn't having an affair, he's trying to prove the evidence was
a set-up. Manufactured by Alex, Felicia assumes; she doesn't want to
fight with Rachel over this, but the whole "set-up" theory sounds fishy to
her. However, she admits she now believes Alex hates Carl so much, he'd
hurt him if he could. [Oh, he could, he could!] She claims Alex is
worried about Rachel. Rachel thinks their conversation is on thin ice,
but Felicia doesn't want Carl and Al's feud to destroy their friendship -
then she urges Rachel to take another objective look at the evidence
against Carl, you've never been afraid to face the truth, even if it
hurts...

Nikos Suite - Matt goes to see Alex, warning him to stay away from
Amanda - the "Hadley" scheme is history, and our deal was to get Carl out
of the family, not to destroy my mother, my sister, and the family
business in the process. Alex scoffs, if you want to protect Mac's
company, you'll have to do a better job than that - I've already stolen
your best authors.  I'll get them back, Matt replies matter-of-factly;
when Carl's gone, Amanda and I will be in charge, not you. [Actually -
how many vote to have RACHEL back in charge?!?!?] Alex sneers, if Carl
couldn't keep the business from slipping, what chance does a boy like you
have - you're way out of your league, watch what enemies you make. He
curtly shows Matt the door.

Cory Mansion - Back at the homestead - Rachel tells Felicia she
suspects Alex's hatred of Carl is stronger than any concern he might have
for Rachel or, possibly, even for Felicia - he's controlling and used to
getting what he wants. Felicia admits she's recently seen a glimpse of
that side of him. Rachel is hopeful that Felicia may be having second
thoughts, but Felicia doesn't respond. Rachel says she intends to stand
by her man, unless and until something concrete persuades her she
shouldn't.
In the living room, Carl continues to pressure Amanda, this time
about what she and Rachel had heard from the hallway outside Hadley's door
- the exact words. Amanda bluffs, you were there, you should remember
what you said. He angrily grabs her arm, swearing to do whatever it takes
to get to the truth and save his marriage. She warns him, threatening her
won't help him any; then she reveals they'd heard him reciting to Hadley a
Shakespeare sonnet he used to read to Rachel. How would Nikos know what
sonnet I whisper to my wife in the privacy of my home, muses Carl - only a
close member of this household could have given him such detailed info; am
I onto something, Amanda????

Meanwhile, Felicia instantly [as if by magic - who's in charge of
"chronological plausibility" on this show?] appears back at Alex's suite,
where he chews her out for going to see Rachel without telling him. She
blasts back that she wanted to be there for her friend, and she has no
intention of letting his feud with Carl break up their long-standing
friendship. Alex backs off, observing that Rachel must be a wreck over
Carl's affair. She seemed pretty calm and level-headed, Felicia reports,
and she's determined not to take any rash actions. Then Felicia tells
Alex, her talk with Rachel made her reexamine her own life - I can't marry
you in November, she announces. [Oooh - she's in trouble now!]

You disgust me, snarls Amanda, breaking away from Carl [we're back at
the Cory mansion again - see, I told you Felicia got to Alex's place
awfully fast!]. She flees through the living room, where she passes
Rachel. How can you let him in Daddy's house, she whines, exiting. Carl
informs Rachel he was quizzing her about her meetings with Nikos. She was
upset to hear you with another woman, pleads Rachel. For the last time,
it wasn't me! Carl asserts. Rachel begs him to consider Amanda's feelings
for once. For ONCE?? To HELL with Amanda, he shouts [good for you, oh
Master of Darkness!] - SHE wants me OUT of this house - do YOU???
Amanda runs into Matt in the foyer; let's get out of here, she begs,
distraught. Carl and Rachel follow Amanda to the foyer, where Matt and
Amanda blast Carl for destroying their family by having an affair. My
so-called "affair" has been manufactured, says Carl - by someone in this
house! Matt and Amanda try to look dubious and outraged and innocent; it
doesn't really work, but they choose this moment to FADE TO BLACK.
