>PAULINA/MATT/SOFIA/NICK
>Carlino's: Paulina takes a phone message for Sofia about school when Nick
comes in. He tries to make small talk, and then he asks about Sofia.
Paulina says she isn't around and she isn't sure when she will be back.
Nick will wait. Paulina wants to know why Nick keeps coming around if Sofia
doesn't want to see him. She didn't say that, did she, Nick asks. Paulina
glares at him, but he sits down and asks for a lemonade. You just don't get
the hint, do you, Paulina asks. Nick thinks that if Sofia doesn't want to
see him she can tell him herself. She will, Paulina promises.

>Art studio at the Cory estate: Matt looks at some sketches of hand, looking
for inspiration. Sofia comes in and asks if she is interrupting. Matt says
no, he was just thinking about her. You must be thinking about me because
I'm late, she replies. She tells him she isn't the model she used to be,
that Paulina asked her to slice some ham before she left and that she wasn't
paying attention. She holds out her left hand, which Matt takes. It is one
of those fake plastic hands with a bloody stump on the end. Matt feigns
horror, and then he says it is lovely and he will add it to his collection.
He then says that he is glad that she isn't afraid to waste time when he
could be sculpting. He looks at her hands, says something isn't right, and
proceeds to roll up her sleeves. They both seem to be enjoying themselves.
Later, while Sofia is posing and Matt is sculpting, Sofia tells him how she
was a klutz in art class, but he doesn't believe her, she probably didn't
have a good teacher. He says she has to have the right attitude when it
comes to the materials. You have to establish a relationship with the clay.
He tells how the sculptor sees the image in his head, transfers it to the
clay, and then everyone can see that image. She says she thinks she can see
it. They come close to kissing, but then Jake bursts in and says there is a
crisis at the paper. Sofia says she has to leave. He walks her out and
tells her to come back another time and to bring her hands, but only the
real ones. Matt then tells her he got a call from Dean (blast from the
past) to go check out this group at a coffee house downtown and asks her to
go with him. Sofia agrees, and she tells him that she thinks it is great
that Matt is coming up with all these things for them to do so Nick thinks
they are dating. (Somehow I get the feeling that Matt was asking her on a
date because he wants to go out with her, not to fool Nick.) They make a
date to meet at the pier at 7. Sofia leaves. Matt goes back into the
studio, and Jake asks Mattoangelo what is going on. Matt says Sofia is
modeling for him, but that Jake shouldn't get excited because it is just her
hands. Jake tells Matt there is a problem with the teamsters at the
printing house. Jake has had some problems dealing with the guy in charge,
so Matt is on deck. And after you are done with that, here's a few more
calls for you to return, Jake says, handing Matt a piece of paper. Matt
complains that this will take him all day and part of the night too. Jake
leaves, and Matt makes a call.

>Carlino's: Nick sits at the bar and Donna comes in. Paulina tells Nick he
can stay, but not to expect a welcome mat and leaves to tend to other
things. Donna asks what is wrong with Paulina. I'm wrong with her, Nick
replies, she's the Boyfriend Police. Still burning your torch brightly,
Donna asks. Nick answers affirmatively and ask what Donna wants. Your
father, she replies, I mean, do you know where he is, she asks. Nick thinks
that the chairmanship of the hospital board keeps him busy, so he is
probably there. Is he alone, she asks. Nick tells her he is working with
Cass. Oh, well maybe I will stop by, she says. She says she has to go and
pick up Stephen and Kirk because Vicky is running around getting decorations
for the party and Donna is keeping the boys for the night she Vicky can
decorate, she supposes. Donna asks if Nick could pick them up and play with
them for a few hours. Nick says he is busy, he is getting ready for
something and he has to be ready when it happens. From across the room,
Paulina glares at the smiling Nick. So you aren't going to help me, Donna
asks. Nick insists he has to be there. If you ever see your father again,
tell him to call me, Donna says. She departs. The phone rings. Paulina
gets it. It's Matt; he wants to let Sofia know he will be an hour late to
their date. Paulina is excited that they have a date, but Matt tells her it
isn't like that. She hangs up and adds it to the list of messages for
Sofia. Nick gets up from the bar as Sofia walks in. He tries to make small
talk and says he needs some time alone with her. She asks why he is back.
He says he wanted to have a chance to talk to her, that this is the first
time he has seen her without Matt. She reminds him that she and Matt are
dating now. He tries to talk to her, but she tells him that he can't do so
any old time he pleases. He says he will make her believe in him again, but
he needs her to give him a chance. No, I don't have to do anything, she
replies. He agrees, and she starts to talk away, but he stops her. He
tells her it is his birthday soon, and he was wondering if they could do
something for old time's sake. Paulina comes and takes Sofia away to talk
to her. Paulina needs to go get Dante from the baby-sitter, so could Sofia
and Tony hold down the fort? Sofia says she can, and that she will be fine
even through Nick is there. Paulina tells her there are some messages at
the bar and leaves. Nick comes over and asks her if they can do something
on his birthday. How about hotdogs on an open fire, he asks. She declines.
He says he can help her out in the kitchen or sit down and have coffee.
Sofia says she can't talk right now, she has a million things to do and asks
him to leave. Sofia goes into the kitchen. Nick turns to leave, but he
can't. He goes to the bar and sees the message from Matt about being late
for their date. Nick pockets the message.
>Later in the evening, Matt comes in to talk to Paulina. He said he
finished his work early. Paulina says that Sofia isn't at the restaurant,
but all her messages were gone from the bar, so she is probably at home
changing, and she will probably stop by the restaurant before she goes to
the appointed meeting place, so Matt will wait.

>VICKY/JAKE/BOBBY
>Vicky's house: Jake comes in, calls to Vicky, and starts to climb the
stairs. Vic yells back that she will be right down, much to Jake's
displeasure. Vic then pisses him off even more when she asks if Bobby is
down there. Bobby's in the truck, Jake replies. Jake looks around, and
then goes over to the sink and examines the faucet that has been turning
itself on. Jake reaches over and turns it on, and Vic comes up behind and
they scare each other. Vic asks if he is going into plumbing. He says no,
but she needs a plumber because Bobby is no plumber. She asks him what he
is talking about. Jake explains how the faucet turned on by itself earlier.
Bobby then sneaks up on Vicky and scares her. Jake and Bobby go to hi-five
each other, but then remembering their animosity, they stop short. (This is
one of the best Bobby/Jake moments I have seen yet.) Vic asks the boys if
they think it is more than just a coincidence. There is something going on
in the house and it is very weird, Vicky proclaims. Vicky says that the
things happening aren't dangerous or scary, but they are weird. She tells
Jake about the wind outside the door, the drafts in the house, the potted
plant falling off the windowsill, the windows flapping open and closed by
themselves, Jake's mug ending up on the porch but everyone denies moving it,
and now the water turning on and off. Jake demands to know why Bobby didn't
tell Vic about the plumbing. Because I knew she would make a big deal of it
like she is right now. He tells them old houses have old plumbing which is
noisy. And all the other stuff can be explained away, Vic asks. Bobby
believes so, and Jake, though it hurts him to say so, agrees, because Jake
can't believe the house is full of spooks because there are enough living,
breathing people who cause trouble. Jake looks over his shoulder, glaring
at Bobby. Vic says that the weird things can't be explained away that
easily. Jake launches into a diatribe about how this is not the way to
teach the kids that the house is not haunted and suggests that Vicky have
Bobby rig the house so all these strange happenings will occur during the
party. Vic decides to keep everything for the party store-bought, which
reminds her that she has about a million things to do, and that Jake has to
get back to the paper. Jake gets really excited and tells Vic that he will
help her with anything she needs for the party. He rushes off in a good
mood. Vic turns around and tells Bobby Halloween brings out the kid in all
of us. Oh, is that what it is, Bobby asks. Vic calls a farm out on a back
road and asks for directions. She hangs up, puts the address down on the
table, and tells Bobby she is on her way. She tells Bobby that she has to
go all the way out there because she wants to have big pumpkins and bales of
hay and stuff. Bobby points out that won't fit in her car, so he gives her
the keys to his truck. You know how to drive stick, don't you, he asks.
She doesn't, and she throws him back the keys. He tells her that he will go
with her, that it won't take that long and that he can help her lift stuff.
She says she can handle it. Have you ever lifted a hay bale before, he
asks, they're heavy. Vic admits defeat and they leave, but not before he
grabs the Thermos and she grabs a giant bar of Dairy Milk. But, she leaves
the address on the table.
>
>The open road:
>Bobby and Vicky have Rhonda loaded up with all the stuff for the party.
Bobby can't get the truck to go; he says Rhonda has been acting up. He gets
out to take a look. She thanks him for helping her find the place and
apologizes for leaving the address at home. After a short time underneath,
he tells her to stop thanking him. He pronounces that the axle is broken.
She looks at her watch and asks how long it will take him to fix. He says he
can't, no out in the middle of nowhere. They aren't going anywhere. Vicky
gets out of the truck and tells him to start walking. He tells her that
they are on a road between the farm and the interstate, but that no one will
probably be coming down the road tonight. Vicky grabs her purse and tries
to call the garage from her cell phone, but she says she can't get a dial
tone. He tells her they are out of the range of the cell or the mountain is
blocking the signal. She says she can't wait around, she has a party to set
up. She starts to walk, and promptly falls into a ditch. Bobby helps Vicky
into the back of the truck and checks her ankle. He thinks it is sprained,
so he wraps it up in his shirt (he had two shirts on, don't get excited,
girls ;) before the swelling gets too bad, and has her elevate it on a
pumpkin. He then gives her the flashlight and tells her to stay put, he
will go look for help on the interstate. She turns on the flashlight and
looks around. Then she hears a wolf cry.
>Bobby comes back. Vicky asks about the sound. It's a brush wolf, a
distant cousin to the timber wolf: half the size, twice as mean, but they
aren't dangerous unless they are spooked. Bobby says he will stick around
since Vicky has a sprained ankle. Bobby says he was going to get lost
anyhow because it was so dark. (They must have switched from daylight
savings time to standard time already.) He says they will be stuck there
all night.

>Vicky's house: Jake comes in to find Donna in the house. She is holding
Kirk's blanket. Jake walks in with a tub: bobbing for apples, he says.
Donna says that is very kinky, but Jake says it is for Vicky, for the party.
Donna says she just came to get Kirk's blanket, that she is keeping the boys
for the night. Jake smiles. That gives him some free time (alone with
Vicky) to put up decorations before the kids see it, he quickly says. You
will do anything to win her heart, Donna says. Jake replies he will give it
his best shot. He asks where Vicky is. Donna says Vicky isn't there even
though her car is in the driveway. Donna surmises Vicky is getting the
decorations with Bobby Reno. Jake looks annoyed. Jake says the operator
says Vicky's cell phone is out of range, so what are they going to do.
Donna tells him to relax, that she will be home soon. Jake says she better
be or he will smack Bobby's mustache off his face. Why darling, are you a
little green around the gills, Donna asks. Jake reminds Donna the kids are
waiting for her and she leaves, smiling at Jake's jealousy. Jake sits and
waits, just to make sure she is OK.

>GARY/JOSIE/CODY
> Gary and Josie's: Gary is sitting on the couch listening to the answering
machine tape from the call Cody made to Josie. Eventually Josie comes out
of the bathroom and asks Gary not to listen to that tape over and over.
Josie is visibly shaking. Gary gets up and apologizes, he thought she was
in the shower. She yells at him, asking why he is playing the tape over and
over: do you like hearing me like that, or do you like to hear Cody
breathing into our phone. He says it is possibly Cody, but she knows it is.
Who else would do it, she asks. He is trying to drive me crazy, and it is
working. She yells that the tap didn't work, so they don't know where he
is. Gary says there might be a clue on the tape. She wants to know more,
and he says that he will tell her when he figures it out. She tells him to
tell her now, but he says he doesn't want to tell her something he isn't
sure about because it will just upset her. She says she is already upset
and demands that he not shield her from this. She quickly says she is sorry
for blowing up, but she wants to know what he thinks. He explains that he
hears a voice in the background with the music, maybe the DJ, and that
perhaps if they can hear the call letters for the station, they can find out
where Cody is. She tells him to play it back. They sit down and play the
tape. They hear the DJ say the call letters: KWOK. She asks where the
station is. He doesn't know, but they can call the FCC and find out where
he is based on their listening area, and then they can pin down Cody. If he
is still there, he might have just stopped off at a bar for a drink. Gary
points out that he called a few hours ago, so he can't be that far. They
can call the Feds, they will pick him up, and then it will all be over. He
tells her to get ready and he will take her to her therapy session before he
goes to the station. She protests, but he insists. She gets up and looks
out the window while Gary calls the station and tells Adams to look up the
location of KWOK. He gets off the phone and tells her not to worry. He
tells her to talk to her mom about moving up the wedding plans. He tells
her that they will be long gone by the time Cody gets there. They hug.
>
>The shrink's office: Josie goes to the office of her psychologist and goes
in. In the office, Josie paces around, talking, it seems to herself. There
is no indication the psychologist is there. (There is no easy way to
explain this scene; it was very powerful, taken from several cuts of the
character talking: looking out the window, sitting down, standing up,
leaning on furniture, looking right into the camera as if it was the
therapist, etc.) She talks about the hang up calls, that she knows it is
Cody. If he comes after her again, she isn't sure what she will do. She
hates Cody like she hates Fax, who killed Frankie, but Cody stole everything
that is important to her. Now everything is gone and she doesn't know how
to get it back. She had everything she wanted: Gary, her family, her job as
a cop. She felt she had finally found herself. She felt strong and smart
and people counted on her, but she knows it was all a fantasy now. Sooner
or later it all fell apart. She feels ashamed that she was such a bad cop.
She wanted to be brave and in control, like a good cop, like Gary, but she
wasn't. She was total failure with Blair, Fax, and Cody. She feels guilty
that Cody isn't in jail because of her and confused about who she is
anymore. She feels like a fake. She feels out of control, and a cop has to
be in control. There has to be a way to get her life back, she surmises.

>The barn at Michael's (I think): Josie raises the gun and points it at a
bale of hay with a target on it. She imagines she sees Cody's head at the
target and starts to shake. Gary opens the door and calls her name. She
turns around and points the gun right at him.
