I thought we were past all that, Maggie responds. Rafael doesn't think they
will ever be past all of that. But that isn't what he said the other night
when they kissed, she reminds him.

>The Herald: Chris shows Matt some changes on a print out. Matt is
appreciative. Chris says he is underpaid. Paulina comes in to place an ad
for Carlinos as Matt and Chris argue about having a reverend do a regular
article. Matt says that is the sort of writing the paper needs: three
letters in two weeks, a sermon each Sunday, the guy can meet a deadline,
Matt says. But nobody is going to read that crap, and it will never get
past Jake, Chris replies. Matt and Chris proceed to argue about Jake as
Matt and Paulina talk about the ad for Manicotti Monday. Chris gives up on
the argument when the phone rings and he take it in the other room. Paulina
asks for a small favor from Matt. Matt shows her the paperwork he has to
finish. OK, Paulina says, and she turns to leave. She turns back and asks,
So, you won't be able to pick Sofia up from the airport? Matt lifts his
head, eyes wide. What time? Paulina just smiles.

>Vicky's house: Vic and Jake are resting in front of the fire Jake built. A
loud sigh is heard. Vic and Jake both open their eyes. Vic asks Jake why
he sighed. Jake said he was going to ignore her sigh while she was thinking
about Ryan. She didn't sigh, she replies. If I didn't sigh, and you didn't
sigh, who is in my house? Just then there is a noise at the door. Jake
picks up a fire poker, and he and Vic tiptoe to the front door. The knob
turns and they wait for the intruder.

>Cory Mansion: Rafael agrees it was a nice kiss. Maggie says it wasn't just
a kiss; it was very nice the way we understood each other. She gushes about
how he made her feel comfortable. That's Rafael, Mr. Warm and Fuzzy, he
smirks. She pushes his comment away, saying he hadn't been like that
before. Rafael tries to get away from her compliments, that after Rachel
came down her for flunking out of school, anyone, even Rafael would feel
sorry for her. Don't tell me it didn't mean anything, she yells. She rants
about whether it was all a big lie to him. He says he wasn't lying when he
said he would be there for her, but it won't change the situation any, that
there is still the issue of Maggie and Nick. Nick doesn't care about me,
Maggie replies. But that doesn't stop you from caring about him, Rafael
replies. As long as there is something between Maggie and Nick, Rafael
won't waste his time pining for Maggie and nothing can happen between Maggie
and Rafael. Maggie storms off, and Rafael is left grinning that his scheme
worked.

>The Herald: Matt thinks he can rearrange his schedule to pick up Sofia. He
and Paulina talk as Nick listens at the door. They arrange to have dinner
together with Sofia. Nick bursts in, says hello to Paulina, asks her what
has brought her to the newsroom. She says she was dropping off an ad. Nick
asks about Sofia, but gets nothing from Paulina before she leaves. Matt
laughs at Nick's attempt to pump Paulina for information. Have you got the
market cornered, Nick asks. Matt cracks that Nick's stock was way down
before Matt came into the picture. Nick asks if Matt is officially in the
picture now. Matt tells him that it is none of his business. Nick says
that Matt didn't seem that confident at Sassy's. Matt replies that was when
Nick used Jake to get Sofia's number and tells him to stay away from Sofia.
Nick says if he wants to contact Sofia, he will, last night proved that.
Matt says last night proved that Sofia doesn't want Nick in her life, but
Nick disagrees. Matt reminds Nick that Sofia hung up on him. Just then,
Chris starts yelling YES!!! in that excited way one does when someone has
just won the lottery. Matt asks him what is up.

>Vicky's house: Bobby opens the door, and Jake nearly takes his head off.
Bobby asks Jake what the heck he is doing. Bobby says he was coming in
using the keys. Jake asks why he didn't knock or ring the doorbell. Is
this your house? Are these your keys? Bobby yell. Just then, Vic gets out
her whistle and blows it. I'm dating a referee, Jake quips. Vic replies if
it works, use it. Bobby asks again what the heck is going on. Jake and
Vicky, after a brief argument on who was jumpy, proceed to tell Bobby about
how there was someone in the house sighing. They imitate the sigh, Bobby
looks at them funny; he says sometimes old houses creak and sigh and moan.
He then asks them if today was the first time they built a fire. They say
it is, and Bobby deduces that the sighing they heard was the hot air in the
flu expanding in all the cracks. The phone rings, startling Jake and Vicky
severely because they are sitting on the phone. Jake goes to grab it, but
Vic takes it away from him. It's my house, she comments. Bobby laughs and
walks into the kitchen. Vic answers the phone and silently hands it to
Jake, who smiles and gives her a patented
you-should-have-just-let-me-answer-it-in-the-first-place look. It's Matt:
they need Jake down there in 20 minutes, or Matt will pull all of his
capital out of the paper. Matt hangs up. Power hungry Mama's boy, Jake
comments. He then turns to Vic and says that he had a great time while it
lasted, glaring at Bobby, but now he has to leave. Jake goes to the door,
and Bobby calls after him. Jake turns around, drops the poker on the floor,
and turns back to the door and almost leaves when Bobby gives Vicky back her
hat. Jake hears this, grunts in disgust, and slams the door behind him.
Bobby tells Vic he is headed upstairs, but Vic asks him to join her for a
cup of coffee and a chat by the fire. Bobby asks her if she has something
on her mind. She shakes her head no, but then nods her head yes, that she
has something to ask Bobby.

>Wallingford's: Felicia and Cass get to the front door when Cass starts to
complain that it is too soon to be doing this, that it reminds him too much
of Frankie and that Felicia must be reading some book on aversion therapy.
Felicia tells him to go in. They do. Babs is there. She comments that she
loves Wallingford's. Felicia tells Cass that Babs is a real estate agent.
Babs informs them that she has found a buyer, the owner of a chain of
bookstores. Cass tries to back out, that they are not in a hurry to sell
and that they will probably lose money on the place. Babs shows them the
deal, saying that after expenses they will make 25% on their investment.
Cass looks at the contract, then at Felicia, telling her that she has
already signed it. Cass says he needs some time. Babs stresses the need to
make this decision fast as she and Felicia go to the front door. Babs
leaves and Felicia comes back to Cass. He says it isn't that he doesn't
want to sell, it's just that he didn't know that she had gone ahead and made
a deal. She says she wanted him to come over to say goodbye.

>The Herald: Jake comes into Matt's office and asks Matt where the hell he
gets off threatening Jake, that he signed a contract and can't take anything
from the office. Matt tells him to shut up, that Chris has just won the
Illinois Publisher's award. Jake is excited, that he made Chris what he is
today, master of the universe. So do I get a raise, Chris asks. No, Jake
and Matt answer in unison. Jake says they will put him on the front page
with the head line "Bay City Herald's Secret Weapon." Matt disagrees: make
a discreet anouncement on the op-ed page. Jake says that Chris saved the
paper from Fish Wrap Hell, that Matt doesn't know how to handle a master
situation. Matt replies Chris is not going on the front page. Then he
quits, Jake announces. What, Chris yells. Let me handle this, Jake
mutters. You're about to handle me out of a job, Chris snaps. Are you
kidding, Jake replies. With this award, you could get a job at any paper in
the country. Jake then realizes what he has just said and stumbles over his
words and reminds Chris that he has a contract with The Herald. Chris
prompts that for a little more money, he'd stay for sure. Jake says he
should let Matt quit since we (he and Chris) won this award. We, Chris
asks, don't you mean me? Jake tries to take some credit for pitching Chris
all those award winning story ideas. Chris reminds Jake that he had to
write the stalker piece in secret so Jake wouldn't mess it up. So what does
that make me, your muse, Jake asks. My nemesis, look it up, Chris returns.
Matt thinks Chris could win another award for the Cody Murcer series of
articles. We could run an article: where's the cop killer, Jake answers.
He then quips without him, the paper would still run stories on Arbor Day.
It isn't your ideas I have a problem with, it's your methodology, Matt says.
He reminds Jake how underhanded he is. Right back at ya, he who was going
to take his capital out of this company. Matt says it was the only way to
get Jake in the office, and Chris wanted to see Jake's face when he found
out about the award. Jake hugs Chris. Matt says he didn't forget the trick
Jake pulled the other night and asks him if he really wants to hire Sofia.
Jake says he would love to hire Sofia. When Sofia's name comes up, Matt
asks what time it is. It's about, Chris begins. Matt sees the time, lets
out a Homer Simpsonish Doh, and anounces he has to go. Before he does, Jake
asks matt if he can come up with a new sales promotion: 100 ski masks to the
first 100 new subscribers. No, Matt and Chris say in unison. Matt tells
Jake if he has so much energy, he can attack the stack of paperwork in the
office. Jake tries to tell Matt that is his department. Matt leaves. Jake
tries to get Chris' help, but he has to go do award-winning journalist
things. Jake turns to Nick, who was just leaving. Nick says they need to
do this another time. No, you screwed up, my friend, and I want an
explaination, Jake demands.

>Vicky's house: Bobby asks Vic what is on her mind. She asks if he has had
anymore experiences, dreams or Ryan's memories. Bobby says since he went to
the grave and said thank you, he hasn't. Vic says that is great. Bobby
says he has been sleeping well. He asks if she had a good time last night.
She says she did. It's good to get out sometimes, he says, and she agrees.
He says he did all the talking, but he doesn't know much about her
personally. He says if he is overstepping his bounds, he'll stop, but she
knows everything about him thanks to Jake's thoroughness. Vic talks about
herself: she loved Ryan, the kids are his life. She tells him about how she
technically was born in Bay City, but she grew up in Lassiter, PA, about her
sister Marley and her work. He interupts her about the technicality. She
explains how her mom and dad weren't married, how Donna didn't know she had
two daughters, but only one. Vicky was taken away and raised by Bridget and
Jake was her only other family, that she and Jake have been friends all
their life. Bobby says that explains a lot, why they fight and play like
kids together. Vic agrees, that they do a lot of things the way they always
have. Bobby thinks it is interesting that she knew Jake long before she met
Ryan, but she fell in love with Ryan, but he figures Vic and Jake weren't
ready for a relationship. Vic quickly agrees, that Ryan was different.
How, Bobby asks. Ryan was Ryan and Jake's Jake. She admits she fell in
love with Ryan long before she met him. You couldn't really do that with
Jake, Bobby cracks. Vic thinks it still could be that way with Jake, that
it will be whatever it is, but she has to take it slow. Bobby says he
doesn't understand that: if she knows and trusts Jake completely, what is
she waiting for. She says she has to know it is right.

>Wallingford's: Cass and Felicia have coffee and talk. She asks if there is
anything he wants to keep. He says not really, but then he goes over to the
wall and gets Wally's hat.

>Vicky's house: What do you have to be sure about, Bobby asks. Just then,
the boys come in. Kirk says Stephen got in a fight. Stephen tells his
little brother to shut up, that he will tell his mom. Vic asks what happen.
Stephen says another kid said some stuff. Kirk tugs on his brother. Bobby
gets up and, doing his best Scotty accent, asks Captain Kirk to help him
with the warp drive. The little boy leaves with Bobby. Vic asks Stephen to
explain why they had the fight. Stephen says the boy said the house was
haunted. Bobby and Vic exchange glances.

>The Herald: Chris puts down the phone and says he has to go. Nick tries to
bum a ride, but Jake stops him. Jake grabs him and tells him to sit down
and write the report. Nick slips out of Jake's grasp, and they both tumble
to the floor. Jake remind Nick that this isn't a part-time job he has, that
he has to come ready, willing and able. Nick says he will make it up to
Jake, but there is somewhere he has to be. He turns to leave, and Maggie is
standing in the doorway. She says she has to talk to him, and this time, he
is going to listen to her. Nick wants to know what Maggie wants. She asks
if they can go someplace a little more private. Where, the barn, Nick snaps.
Maggie tells him that she is finally over him. That's it, Nick asks. Yeah,
I just didn't want you to think that I was still thinking that things would
change. Nick says he doesn't care what Maggie wants or who she wants it
from. I don't believe you, she responds. What did you expect after the way
you treated me, he asks. All I did was love you, Maggie defends. That was
love? Lying about being pregnant? Tricking me into marrying you? Love
you, too, he snaps. She admits she made some big mistakes, but she never
wanted to hurt him. He replies that she saved all of that for Sofia.
Maggie says she sees Nick for what he really is. Nick says that this is all
really interesting, but he has to go meet Sofia. It's hard loving someone
who doesn't love you back, isn't it, Maggie asks. You'll find out the hard
way, she promises. Nick says his and Sofia's only problem was Maggie, and
she is history.

>Vicky's house: Stephen says he hit the other kid because he said the house
was haunted. Vic asks what is wrong with the house. It's falling down
everywhere you look, Stephen replies. Vic says it just needs some work.
It's a wreck, it's scary and it's haunted, Stephen says firmly. IF you
think it is haunted, why did you hit the kid, Vic asks. BEcause you are my
mom, and you're crazy about this place, Stephen says. Vic hugs Stephen and
tells him he doesn't have to stick up for her, but that the house isn't
haunted. Bobby comes in and tells Stephen that Vic is right: it is sad when
people die, but they don't stick around in the form of ghosts, they get on
with it. As for this place being a wreck, Bobby agrees. But Bobby says Vic
is a visionary: she sees the house how it's gonna be when all the work is
done, that it will be the most amazing house in Bay City when it is
finished. The best part is that they get to keep all the nooks and crannies
and hiding places. That reminds Vic of the silver dollar Jake found in the
chimney. She shows the small piece of history to Stephen. She gives
Stephen the coin and says he can put it in his treasure chest. Stephen says
he told her not to bring it downstairs. Vic says she didn't. Stephen looks
at Bobby, but Bobby says don't look at me. Well, if you two didn't bring it
down, how did it get here, Stephen asks. Bobby and Vic exchange looks.

>Wallingford's: Felicia caresses Wally's hat and says you never really lose
someone you love, you just have to take it one day at a time. Felicia takes
down Wally's picture and asks Cass if he is ready for a new adventure. Cass
takes up a pen and signs the papers. They turn out the lights, but then
Cass goes back to the shelves and takes down a book of Browning and reads:
>"Overhead the treetops meet
>flowers and grass spring 'neath one's feet,
>it was not above me, not below
>my childhood had not learned to know
>for what are the voices of birds, ion(?) of beasts, but words
>our words, only so much more sweet
>the knowledge of that with my life begun
>but I had so near made out the sun
>and counted your stars, the seven and one,
>like the fingers of my hand
>nay I could all but understand
>whereforth through heaven the white moon ranges
>and just when out of herself fifty changes
>no unfamiliar face might overlook me?
>Suddenly God took me.
>(I hope I got this right)
>Cass cries and Felicia hugs him. They take the book, along with Wally's
hat and picture and, with one long gaze back at the store, the two friends
leave.

>Vicky's house: I left it upstairs in my room, Stephen says. Etta Mae must
have brought it down, Vic concludes. Stephen gets mad: Etta Mae promised
not to touch his stuff, but she must have. Vic gently reminds her son that
Etta Mae sometimes has to touch his stuff. Stephen tells Vic he doesn't
want anyone touching his stuff, not even her. Who is gonna clean your room,
Vic asks. I can clean my own room, Stephen retorts. Vic sends Stephen
upstairs. Bobby watches the boy leave. Harumph, the handy man comments.
They talk about how all kids get in fights. But over ghosts, Vic asks.
>Upstairs, Stephen tells Kirk that Bobby was right, that there are a lot of
places to hide things, and they need a hiding place for the box so no one
else will touch it. No one goes in the attic, Stephen says. Kirk tries the
door, but it is locked. The boys try the keys and open the attic.

back home. He tells her he missed her. She missed him too, but he says she
