TRUST ME - I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING...?
Maggie/Tom'as/Phyllis/Troy/Shelley

Tom'as is at the hospital before work, cramming for the paramedic
exam with Troy and Phyllis. He's been so busy and distracted lately, he
isn't really prepared, so he's pretty wired. Oblivious Maggie comes up to
talk - he snaps at her that he's busy, but she doesn't seem to get the
message. He begrudgingly introduces her to his study buddies, who head
off to the cafeteria. Maggie tells Tom'as he should take a break, he
looks wiped. You're wasting your time, he says, it's over. She keeps
trying to get a response, and he keeps trying to ignore her and study.

Finally she takes a hint and leaves, but runs into her fellow
candy-striper Shelley. I'm trying to get on his good side, Maggie tells
her, but he has to study for this test, his whole future depends on it.

When Shelley makes a comment about not having "all the answers," Maggie
gets an idea. Come on, she says, and they exit.

Maggie has Shelley stand guard while she sneaks into the hospital
classroom. Shelley is afraid this plan could backfire, but Maggie insists
Tom'as will love her for it. She digs through the teacher's desk and
finds the master test with the answers. They turn off the lights and make
their escape.

Tom'as's study pals warn him he's muffing easy questions, he should
take off work this afternoon and study. Tom'as says he'll study on his
breaks, he has to get to work now. Shelley, listening from the doorway
with Maggie, urges her to reconsider, but Maggie is sure her idea will
work, I'll call you later and tell you how it went. She stops Tom'as on
his way out - he's annoyed, but she says she can help him pass his test.

She tries to give him the stolen answer sheet, telling him it's sample
questions she got from a paramedic who took the test 2 years ago, she's
sure it'll help him ace the test - just think how proud John and Sharlene
and Luisa will be when you pass. He says he doesn't want her help, but
she won't go away so he takes the test pages. This doesn't change
anything between us, he tells her. He dashes off to work; she smiles
smugly [see below].

WHILE THE CATS ARE AWAY...
Carl/Rachel/Maggie

Rachel catches Carl on the phone, arranging with one of his old thug
buddies from the past to get Grant's phone records. He tries to conceal
it from her, but she's disappointed because he'd promised to leave the
investigation to the police. The police have limited time and resources,
claims Carl, but I can devote all my efforts to finding proof against
Grant. Rachel is against his renewing his underworld connections, and
blames herself for not being able to remember what happened on the
trestle. Not your fault, says Carl; but the new captain is Grant's
childhood pal, I'll need absolute proof before he'd seriously consider
Grant as a suspect. He seems more suspicious of ME, Carl adds. Rachel
wants Carl out of it, but he reminds her that the police investigation is
officially closed, he may be the only one who can make sure Grant pays for
killing Ryan. But Carl apologizes for all the tension he's caused between
them lately, and suggests they get away for a few days. Rachel likes the
idea, maybe the relaxation will help her memory return. It'll be nice,
she says, to be together with you for a while without worrying about your
plans for revenge on Grant. Carl decides they should leave right away to
visit Amanda and Alli in Los Angeles. Rachel is delighted - she asks only
that he leave his cell phone at home, so his people can't interrupt their
holiday. He agrees; she shuts the phone in the desk drawer and starts
upstairs to make the arrangements - but pauses long enough to overhear
Carl retrieve the phone and call his contact again. I'll be out of town
for a few days, says Carl, that gives you extra time to get Grant's phone
records - and don't call here anymore, I'll be in touch with you. He
returns the phone to the drawer; realizing this is as good as she is going
to get from Carl, she sighs sadly and continues up the stairs.

Later, Maggie [see above] returns to the mansion as Rachel descends
with a suitcase - we're going to visit Amanda in L.A., says Rachel:

remember, you're still grounded, no drag racing, no guys spending the
night, no parties. Don't worry, says Maggie, I'm so busy, and both Nick
and Tom'as hate me, how could I get in trouble. Oh, I'm just so sure
you'd find a way, says Rachel - but I warn you, if you let me down, I'll
have to call Cecile, she's worried about you. Anything but that, says
Maggie, I promise you can trust me [not even bothering to cross her
fingers!]. Right, says Rachel skeptically, rolling her eyes. She goes
back up to finish packing; Maggie's wheels start turning in overdrive.

Rachel comes down shortly with Carl's portable chess set, which he accepts
with relief. They kiss Maggie goodbye and head out the door. As soon as
they're gone, Maggie triumphantly calls Shelley: I'm totally free, she
exults, I have the house to myself, and we are gonna have ourselves one
MAJOR party!

FAMILY TIES
Vicky/Steven/Nick

Vicky is on the phone with Donna - yes, I picked up Steven at the
airport last night, he was too jet-lagged and tired to tell him about
Ryan, I'll tell him as soon as I can; no, I haven't read those grief
therapy books yet, I haven't had time... Unable to handle Donna's
nagging, she makes an excuse and hangs up. She takes a breath, then
re-reads her latest entry in a journal she's been writing for Ryan: I
stopped by your office yesterday, it just isn't the same; the new captain
wouldn't show me Justine's autopsy report, all they found were "body
parts," it's so creepy; what if she isn't really dead? Steven slogs in
sleepily with his ball and glove - where's Ryan, he promised to take me to
the park and play catch. Vicky sits him on the sofa with her and tries to
find the words to explain what happened: Ryan was trying to catch a
criminal, he was shot, they took him to the hospital, Uncle John and the
other doctors did their best, but he didn't make it. Ryan's dead, she
explains, you won't be able to see him anymore, or play catch with him;
we'll be sad for a long time, but you and Kirk and I will get through this
as a family, it's what Ryan would have wanted - do you understand? Steven
nods, then asks if he can play his videogame now. Surprised, Vicky agrees
and lets him go, wondering how much sunk in.

Later, Nick comes over with his dog Riley to visit Vicky and cheer
her up. She's pleased by his visit, and confides she's tired of people's
sympathy - she shows him the grief books Donna gave her. He asks how
Steven took the news. Vicky isn't sure, she thought he was mature enough
to understand, but he just wanted to play videogames. Steven enters, gets
excited over Nick's dog, and they plan to pick up Steven's dog Shortstop
from the kennel. Steven wants to go to the park and play catch with
Riley, but Vicky uneasily says she's busy today, I'll take you tomorrow.

Steven throws a tantrum, no, I wanta go NOW, I hate you, I want a new
mommy! He runs out of the room in a snit.

Nick gets Steven to come back talk with him on the couch. Nick tells
him Vicky really does love him, and they talk about what a great guy Ryan
was, never too busy to play with him. Nick says he's not as good as Ryan,
but maybe he and Riley could play baseball with Steven sometime. Steven
seems happier, gives Nick a hug, then takes his ball and glove and trots
off to his room. Vicky thanks Nick for stepping in, she just wasn't ready
to face her memories in the park yet. Nick assures her Steven needs her,
it's hard when she's busy. Like you needed your mom when she wasn't
around, Vicky guesses. Nick sidesteps the issue, he has to get to work,
he's the new busboy at Sassy's. Vicky teases him about having to wear one
of those skimpy waitress uniforms. They won't let me - unbelievable! Nick
says in mock indignation. They hug, then he exits. She returns to her
journal, scrawls a few lines, until she's interrupted by commotion back in
the kids' room. As she dashes out, the camera zooms in on her last entry:
IS JUSTINE REALLY *DEAD*?

COLD COMFORT
Joe/Paulina/Jake

After spending the night together at his house, Joe wakes Paulina
with a kiss. She smiles blissfully until she realizes he let her
oversleep, now she's late for work. He's sorry he was asleep before she
got home last night, and asks how it went when she told Jake their
marriage was over. His whole future was just taken away, says Paulina, he
didn't take it very well. I doubt if he'll just walk away, she predicts,
Jake's never known when to let go, we could be in for a long rocky time
before he accepts this.

Meanwhile, Jake sits alone, studying their wedding picture. It's not
over yet, he vows.

Joe tries to make Pauline feel less guilty - Jake's probably taken up
with Allison again, he suggests. No, says Paulina, that was just an act
to make me jealous. She's upset over the pain she's causing Jake, through
no fault of his own; Joe cheers her up by talking about their long and
happy future together. The phone rings; Paulina answers. Jake,
intentionally running the vaccuum cleaner in the background, claims he's
trying to clear things out and start his new life, but the donation truck
is coming over today and I won't be here - if you don't want them to take
the wrong stuff, you'd better get over here and clear out all your things
before they arrive. She agrees to come right over, and hangs up; Jake
looks quite pleased with himself. Joe suspects a typical Jake trick,
doesn't want Paulina going over there and letting Jake try to manipulate
her again, I'll do it for you. No, says Paulina, I can take care of
myself, you have to stop trying to protect me, like when you lied to my
face about Jake being dead. They get into an argument, until Joe points
out that's probably what Jake wants. He offers a compromise: I'll go to
Jake's house with you, then we'll have a celebration dinner tonight at the
Harbor Club. Paulina happily agrees.

Joe and Paulina arrive at the house, no sign of Jake. She leaves Joe
waiting downstairs while she goes up to clear out the upstairs rooms. Joe
picks up the wedding picture and studies it. Jake emerges from a back
room - hands off that picture, Carlino, he snarls. Joe tells Jake he
should read the writing on the wall, he's history, bow out gracefully.

Jake insists he and Paulina were meant for each other, it's just a matter
of time be fore Paulina comes to her senses and wonders what she ever saw
in Joe. They get in a shouting match, until Paulina comes down and breaks
it up. She pleads with Jake not to make it harder than it already is.

Jake is livid that she would bring this neanderthal into his house; he
proclaims his devotion to her, he's risked his life for her, even when he
couldn't remember his own name he was dreaming about her - I know you love
me the same way. Not anymore, she says, stopping him cold. She begs him
to give her a half hour alone to finish getting her stuff, then she'll be
gone. Fine, I have to see Vicky, he says - but we both know there's one
place you'll never get rid of me: right here - and he plants the tip of
his finger in the center of her chest [as close as he could get to her
heart on daytime TV]. He gives her a wistful smile, and exits. Paulina
tells Joe he should go, too, she wants to finish up by herself. Joe
agrees reluctantly, he'll go check out the restaurant Eddie saddled him
with. They embrace and kiss, then he exits. Jake, hiding nearby,
approaches the door - then sends a sly smile in the direction Joe just
left.

Paulina finishes packing up her CD's, then gazes one more time at the
wedding picture: You gotta let go, Jake, she says with a tearful sigh.

Back at Joe's, she puts away her things, then calls the Harbor Club to
find out what time Joe's reservations were for. 8:30? Great, see you
then, she says happily.

Meanwhile, Joe is poking around the vacant restaurant, then he
decides to check out the meat locker. [Yes, we can see this one driving
up Main Street with a police escort...] He turns down the thermostat, and
steps inside. Right on cue, Jake joins him. Jake: "Gonna sell me some
poisoned meat?" Joe: "Tell you what - you come back when we're open, and
the poisoned meat is on the house." Naturally, Jake pulls the door shut -
as he hears it latch, Joe gets an appalled look on his face. You're not
going anywhere until we have this out about Paulina, Jake insists. Wrong,
growls Joe, WE'RE not going anywhere - you've just locked us in, we're
stuck in here, and it's about to get a lot colder! As Jake realizes he's
serious, he starts yelling for help and pounding on the door. He shoots
Joe an icy glare [no pun intended] as Joe stares at the ceiling in a
silent rage. FREEZE FRAME.

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
