PLUS - Great Line of the Week, also Lines of the Day...

YOU'RE GETTING SLEEPY...SLEEPY...

Carl/Rachel/Dr. Alpert/Grant/McNamara

Grant is waiting for his old pal Gabe at the station, nervously
fiddling with a pair of handcuffs, and accidentally snaps one on his
wrist. He panics, and when McNamara walks in he pleads with embarrassment
and fear, get me out of this thing! McN is surprised at his overreaction,
tells Grant he's worried about his obvious distress, what's going on.

Grant says he just needs answers about the investigation; McN reassures
him he'll keep him posted when there's any news.

Meanwhile, at the mansion, Carl watches Rachel's hypnosis session.

She relives following Justine up the trestle; struggling with her; seeing
Ryan arrive, he's unsure which is which; then a fourth person appears, but
she can't make out who it is. Is it Grant? Carl suggests. He's
frustrated when she can't identify the fourth person, but she's so
agitated that he agrees to let Dr. Alpert bring her out of it - she won't
remember what she's just experienced, she can't yet handle it consciously,
says the doc.

Just as she comes to, the phone rings, and Carl answers it. It's McN,
he says they know Rachel's undergoing hypnosis [thanks to Dana], and
demands to know what she remembered. Carl is hostile, thought you closed
the investigation; but he tells him a fourth person was definitely on the
trestle. Are you sure there was a fourth person, McN repeats, as
[naturally] Grant casually eavesdrops. McN insists the police conduct
future hypnosis sessions - cooperate, or we'll have to haul Rachel in for
interrogation, your choice. Carl reluctantly agrees the police can
participate, as long as Carl and Dr. Alpert can run things (Your bedside
manner leaves much to be desired, he tells McN sarcastically). Meanwhile,
Grant has made a quick exit from McN's office [see below].

Rachel is frustrated that she can't remember what she said in the
session. The doc tells her to be patient, it'll all come back in time.

Carl tells him the police may sit in next time. The doc exits. Carl
wants Rachel to go upstairs and rest, but she insists he tell her what she
remembered. He finally admits she saw a fourth person, she couldn't
identify it but he's confident it'll turn out to be Grant. She makes him
promise to let the police handle it, then agrees to go upstairs and rest.

STRANGE BEDFELLOWS
Jake/Allison/Matt/Joe/Paulina/Gary/McNamara

Seeing Allison talking with Matt at Sassy's, Jake makes a big show of
being relieved to find her, kissing her like a long lost lover - "Paulina
Who?" he kids. This is all for Matt's benefit; Matt rolls his eyes at the
display. Allison is very suspicious, but plays along for the moment.

Jake tells Matt he was just kidding about forgetting Paulina, he just got
jealous seeing Matt making time with his ex-Cupcake Allison. No need to
mention this to Paulina, Jake adds with mock embarrassment. Matt's seen
enough, and exits with disgust [see below]. Jake tries to grill Allison
about what she wanted with Paulina's brother, but she's more interested in
what scheme of his brought on the phony display of affection. He tries to
make nice with her, but she knows him too well. She doesn't believe his
story that seeing her with Matt, his old nemesis, made him jealous - I
refuse to let you use me to get Paulina back, she tells him. I'm not that
devious, he protests, that's apparently more your style (i.e., using that
bracelet to needle Paulina, hanging around when she said she was going
back to S.F., etc.). Eventually she gets him to admit, he knew Matt would
go blabbing back to Paulina, and tries to convince Allison to team up with
him to make Paulina jealous, so she'll come back to him. Why should I,
Allison asks bitterly, what do I get out of it?

Meanwhile, Paulina comes to the police station to find out who's the
police liaison who will co-chair the hospital benefit with her. When she
runs into Joe, he tells her McNamara gave him that assignment. She's
suspicious, wonders why his assignments always seem to link him with her,
did he arrange it this way? He assures her it was random, he agreed for
Ryan's sake, didn't know she was involved; but he doesn't need the hassle,
if it's too awkward for her why doesn't she just ask McN for a different
liaison. She thinks that's a good idea, then reconsiders. McN comes out
and tells Joe he has a phone call. They move into the office; as Paulina
waits, she overhears Joe talking affectionately with someone named Sofia.

Trying not to be too obvious, she makes some menu notes as Joe finishes
the call. She tells him she thinks they should work together on this,
they just need to keep their "former" feelings out of it. He agrees,
reviews her notes, and offers his own menu suggestions. She decides he
should work on the food and she'll plan the flowers and decorations. He
has trouble staying focused, finally says he has to get back to work,
they'd better plan the event outside of work hours. He exits abruptly,
says he'll call her later.

SO - Paulina hauls herself home, runs into Carl, who tells her he's
glad she's working on the benefit in Ryan's honor. Then Matt enters [see
above], looking for his old address book.  Carl exits to check on Rachel;
Paulina kids Matt about his "little black book," but Matt implies that's
more Jake's style. Paulina has a guy question for him: can guys be as
crushed as women are when a relationship falls apart? Sure, he answers,
they try to hide it, but they can be torn up inside. Paulina says she's
worried about Joe, he's been assigned to work with me on the benefit, and
he can't seem to spend more than five minutes with me before he makes an
excuse to duck out. Then she asks Matt if he ever heard Joe mention some
chick named Sofia, he really lit up when she called him at the station.

Matt tells her it's silly to be jealous - besides, it's Jake who's up to
his old tricks, I just saw Jake and Allison getting it on at Sassy's, big
time - this time it was Jake who was doing the pursuing, not Allison.

Paulina can't believe it. As he continues to trash Jake for his very
public infidelity, Paulina is about to write Jake off for good - until
Matt mentions that Jake called Allison "Cupcake." This pushes just the
right button, and Paulina decides to storm over to Sassy's and confront
him. Why can't I have a normal, healthy relationship like you and Donna?
she rages. (Matt looks uncomfortable.)

BACK AT SASSY'S, Jake begs Allison to help him out with Paulina "for
old times' sake." She tells him he knows what he can do with his "old
times." She gets up to leave; Jake glances toward the entrance and sees
Paulina arrive, so he says loudly to Allison: "You're forgetting how great
those old times were" - then he kisses her ardently, as Paulina watches
with disbelief.

Meanwhile, back at the station - in the office, McN tells Gary about
Rachel's memory of the fourth person. Gary has a list of tire dealers for
luxury imports, to help identify the tracks at the trestle. Joe enters,
as McN tells Gary to start fresh in the morning. "Bright and 'Early,'"
Gary says with mock innocence.  McN shoots him an icy glare and exits;
when he's gone, Gary cackles to Joe over the insulting nickname. He asks
Joe how it's going with Paulina. Joe reveals that Paulina is the other
co-chair for the benefit. Gary thinks it's great, could bring Joe and
Paulina closer together - he hides a guilty smile when Joe moans how hard
it is to work with someone you care about, trying to stay professional
when all you want to do is grab her and kiss her. Must be hell, says
Gary. He advises Joe to hang in there, this may be your last chance to
get her back. But Joe says he can only stand to be rejected so many
times, maybe he should just move on with his life, without Paulina.

GRANT ON THE RUN
Donna/Vicky/Grant/Carl

Donna drops in on Vicky, who's just going through the motions. Vicky
gives her a tin of Bridget's shortbread cookies to take back to Matt.

Vicky says Mike called her from the clinic, and told her that Donna's been
calling him several times a day. Vicky wonders how Matt's been reacting
to Donna's concern for Mike. Donna assures her Matt's supportive, things
are fine - you should worry about yourself instead of me. Vicky's next
big hurdle, says Donna gently, is to clear out Ryan's penthouse
[AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!]. Vicky doesn't want to consider it, it's like
saying goodbye to him forever, she can't face it. She tells Donna that
Carl should do it instead. Donna promises to go with Vicky and help her,
but Vicky absolutely refuses, it would be too painful. She orders Donna
to leave, go find Matt and be together like every other happy couple -
then she bursts into tears. Donna hugs her, then starts to leave, when
Grant [see above] shows up at the door (for the second time today). Donna
offers to stay, but Vicky says it's o.k., and Donna exits [see below].

Grant looks so shaky, Vicky agrees to let him see Kirk again. While she's
getting him, Grant picks up Ryan's picture, and hears three gunshots echo
in his mind. Vicky enters and hands him Kirk, then leaves again to get
Kirk a cookie. While she's gone, Grant confides to Kirk that he may have
to go away for a long time, I don't want you to feel abandoned like I did
when my mother left - people may say bad things about me, but I never
meant to hurt anyone, especially you. He hands Kirk the teddy bear:
Theodore will help remind you that I love you, even after I go away.

Vicky enters in time to hear the end of this; she hands Kirk the cookie,
and questions Grant about what he meant. She's dubious when he makes up a
story about having to take a job out of town. Doing what? she asks; but
he says he has to go now. He kisses Kirk goodbye, and exits [see below].

Carl [see above] sits brooding on the stairway. The doorbell rings,
it's Donna [see above]. Carl says Matt was here earlier but he's gone by
now, but Donna says she really came to see Carl. She gives him the
cookies - Ryan's favorite, Carl notes wistfully. Donna comforts him, and
says she's worried about Vicky - especially with Grant coming around all
the time. Vicky's too fragile for Grant to be leaning on her so much,
says Donna, he's there right now. Carl makes his apologies and leaves
abruptly. He goes over to Vicky's - probably hoping to catch Grant, but
Vicky's alone. She says she was going to call him, and asks him to do her
a huge favor. Anything, he says. But it's a biggie: would you go through
Ryan's things at his penthouse. Carl doesn't relish the task, but Vicky
obviously can't handle it, and Carl graciously agrees. She tells him to
keep anything he finds that he wants to save, and he says he'll set aside
anything she might cherish. You should probably do the same for Grant,
she sighs, he's really a wreck, seems to be getting worse all the time.

Carl sees his chance to gently pump her for details; at his prompting, she
tells Carl that Grant was here twice today to see Kirk, actually had tears
in his eyes - the second time, he talked about not being around for much
longer, and Vicky wonders if Grant might be suicidal! "Grant has neither
the courage nor the decency," Carl observes. He promises Vicky he'll find
out what's up with Grant, he's going over to Grant's to make sure he's all
right. Vicky offers to call Grant, maybe she can keep him on the line
until Carl gets there - but she gets a busy signal. She's worried, but
Carl says leave it to me, kisses her on the cheek, and dashes out.

MEANWHILE, Grant has the phone off the hook. He grabs Kirk's photo
from the dresser, and unzips a bag on his bed to start packing for a hasty
getaway...FREEZE FRAME.

LINES OF THE DAY:

  Jake: "I kissed you."

Allison: "If you'd gotten any closer, you'd be wearing my blouse!"

Vicky (worried about Grant): "Who would've thought it - the guy has a
soul."

Carl: "Well, let's not be too hasty."

LINE OF THE WEEK (from Thursday, 10/19):

Jake (to Allison): "I hate long goodbyes, and this is turning into a
mini-series!."

Until next time,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
