Here is the Update for Another World for Friday, October 28, 1994:

Angela/Maggie/Jerry

Maggie has been working on her school paper in the hospital cafeteria when Angela intrudes; as she leaves, Angela spills her purse and makes sure Maggie sees her birth control pills. She hints that she and Tom'as are sleeping together, but denies it when Maggie says she doesn't buy Angela's act. Angela: "I don't like to see people get hurt, even people who don't like me much." Maggie: "That must be quite a crowd." Angela says she'll go get Tom'as, if it will make Maggie feel better. She exits, and Jer
ry moves in from the sidelines where he's been watching this. I saw the pills, he says; if you think Tom'as is living celibate with Angela, you're being naive. Maggie asks if he has any proof. I know guys, he answers; he implies it wouldn't be hard for Tom'as to be with Angela one night and then act innocent around Maggie the next day. You deserve better, he says with fake concern. Maggie is a little shaky by now, but keeps repeating that Tom'as wouldn't do that. Jerr!
y drops hints about how Tom'as use
d to act around Angela at the Surf Bar when Maggie wasn't there. Maggie is nearly in tears, and Jerry puts his arms around her to comfort her just as Angela reenters with Tom'as. Tom'as isn't inclined to read anything into it, but he insensitively tells Maggie that he and Angela are going to shoot some pool at the student center, would she like to come along. Maggie, having some pride, sniffs No thanks, Jerry and I have plans. Jerry takes her cue, and says they're going to a frat party. They exit, and
Angela sympathizes with Tom'as that Maggie is growing away from him, getting into the college social scene. He doesn't buy it, and starts off after Maggie and Jerry; Angela smiles smugly to herself.

Grant/Vicky/Jake

Vicky goads Grant about letting Amanda fly off to New York with Evan - what's the plan? she asks. No plan, he answers, I trust Amanda implicitly. Jake bursts in: "Sorry to interrupt, I've been tracking Vicky all over town." Grant: "I know the feeling well." Jake takes Vicky out in the hallway, and tells her Paulina's getting suspicious about their secret conversations, it's only a matter of time before she finds out who "Mark" really is. Vicky makes her excuses to Grant and hustles Jake out of there.
They go to Tops to talk. Jake is concerned that Paulina is getting too close to Mark/Kirk, she'll get hurt when she has to give the baby up; in the meantime, she's getting suspicious that Vicky is hanging around too much. Vicky promises to be more careful, but rejects Jake's suggestion that she spend more time on getting Ryan back. His phone rings - it's Paulina, the baby's sick, meet me at the hospital. Vicky insists on coming along, despite Jake's warning that she's !
pressing her luck if she wants to
keep her secret.

At the hospital, Vicky gets upset when Jake won't let her go to the emergency room with him, but finally agrees to stay back. Paulina catches them together. Vicky asks anxiously about Mark; Paulina says he'll be fine, but why are you two always together? Vicky "confesses" that she's Jake's new investor in his publishing company. Paulina is steamed that he'd take Vicky's money as a partner but not hers; he explains that by the time he was ready, she had given all her money away - Vicky found out about i
t and stepped in to help, but if Paulina's upset, that deal is history, just say the word. Vicky objects, she insists he honor their "deal," and Paulina agrees the deal should stand - she's not happy about it, but she and Jake will discuss it later at home. A nurse brings Paulina the baby, ready to go home. Vicky hovers a little too close to the baby, and Paulina pulls away and tells Jake it's time to head home. Jake sends Paulina ahead, he just has to finish some busin!
ess with Vicky. Paulina exits war
ily. Jake reams Vicky out for her stupid idea, but she insists it's the perfect excuse for her to spend lots of time at Jake's house. You're playing a very dangerous game, he warns. It's not a game, she answers, it's the only choice I have.

Amanda/Evan

On the Cory jet to New York, Evan keeps making supposedly innocent comments that hint at their past relationship. Amanda calls him on it, saying she wants to make this trip bearable for both of them, so just cut it out and stick to business. He apologizes and says he wants them to be friends again. We were never friends, she says ironically, but she admits that she has regrets that they couldn't make their relationship work back then. He's surprised at this, and wants to talk about what happened. Aman
da agrees that they never really closed things. Evan: "You told me to leave town and never darken your doorway again." Amanda: "Yeah, I see how you listened." But he wants to seriously discuss what went wrong. With difficulty, she explains that they were only lovers, never friends or partners - they were always sneaking around, Evan was lying about who he was and why he came to town - she wanted more, and real love takes a lot more honesty and commitment than he was abl!
e to give her. He seems astounded
, I thought it was just me that felt that way - but you can't turn back the clock. No, she says, but you can learn from the past so you can love better the next time, like what I've found with Grant; maybe there's someone like that out there for you, too. I'm not so sure, he says quietly.

They get to their hotel (separate rooms, one suite); Amanda wants to work on the ad campaign, which she really loves. He suggests they work together over dinner. At first she refuses, then she changes her mind - just give me a few minutes to call Grant [see below]. He watches as she has an obviously intimate conversation with her fianc, and looks uncomfortable when she hangs up and catches him looking at her.

Grant/Spence

After Vicky and Jake leave, Spence arrives to visit with his "grandson." Grant brings down fake-Kirk, and Spence announces that the injunction was lifted and the Harbor Club is reopened while he works on proving his innocence on the gambling charges. Grant is doting on the baby, and Spence warns him not to come on too strong like he did with Grant and Ryan - he nearly destroyed the whole Harrison family by his heavy-handed "caring." Just be there for him, Spence advises, he'll know you love him. Later,
Amanda calls from New York. Grant reports that Spence is here, they're all fine but he misses her, he's sorry about their earlier misunderstanding, he trusts and loves her. When he hangs up, Spence asks about Amanda. Grant explains she's in N.Y. with Evan, and Spence is appalled - get back on the phone and make her come back right now, he urges. I can't do that, Grant answers; if I did, I'd lose her.

Marshall/Paulina/Cass/Frankie

Cass and Frankie return to Walter's house with Marshall and Paulina. Frankie says she hinted to Ryan that they'd be coming here, but their search isn't really legal; Marshall doesn't care. They start combing through papers, books, etc., for clues to where Walter might have taken Felicia. Frankie finds a stack of Felicia novels, and suggests that an avid reader like Walter might have made notes in the margins, etc., that might help them get inside his head. She gets a vibe from one of the earliest books
, a damsel-in-distress story from before Felicia started writing stronger heroines; alas, the book has no marks in it. Everyone jumps when Paulina's pager goes off - it's my babysitter, she tells them, I have to go but I'll be back. Paulina and Marshall embrace, then he walks her out to her car. While they're gone, Frankie remembers when she and Cass bought their old house and started restoring it - they had moved an armoire and found a small doorway behind it, leading t!
o a stairway to the upstairs - may
be Walter's house has the same thing. Marshall returns, and he and Cass move the armoire, but there's nothing there or anywhere else on that floor. Frankie notes that there's no basement - Marshall says he once edited a book on restoring Victorian houses, and remembers that they often built without basements if they were too near an underground stream; this house is near the wetlands, so they probably built the cellar elsewhere so the house would stay solid. Cass remembers that they also used to hide im
portant documents in the newel post - they dash to the newel post, pry off the top, and discover the deed as well as an addendum listing all the additions and outbuildings. Marshall thinks, if Felicia's on the property, the location could be on this list. Most of the items - barns, tool sheds, etc. - were probably torn down long ago - but the cyclone cellar could still be there. They rush to check it out.

Walter/Felicia

is mother wanted. He could be a really good writer, she says; she'd be honored to help him, they need to get him settled in a nice place and she'll come and visit him every day to read what he's written and work with him. He sits beside her and lets her cradle his head against her shoulder, as she talks soothingly. All the time she's holding back tears of terror, glancing desperately at the stairs leading up to freedom. He finally agrees, and she leads him to the stairs - but he goes back for the manus
cript, complains again about the ending, and reveals he'd already heard her treacherous tape plus another one back at the house. I was just stringing you along, like you've been doing to me, he sneers - but I've recorded my own ending; I think you'll love it. He slaps in the cassette and hands the player to Felicia. She listens fearfully as his voice describes his perfect ending: Claudio lets Armand escape; Armand finds Rosamund in Claudio's root cellar, and Claudio loc!
ks them in to die together. Arman
d resolves to kill Rosamund and then himself, so they can be together in death. As the tape ends, Walter goes to a shelf and brings back a mechanical device - yes, folks, another bomb. Walter: "You know this is the only possible ending, don't you?" Felicia: "For Armand and Rosamund, or for us?" Walter (coyly, almost playfully): "Does it make a difference?" Felicia goes numb. FREEZE FRAME.

Happy Halloween,

Vicky (vkorosei@midis.sicklier.ed)
