Here is the update for Another World for Friday, October 21,
1994:

"IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT" or "WHICH BABY GETS THE
EMMY?"

Walter/Randy

Walter is in the mailroom, waiting for Randy to get back
from delivering Marshall's mail to his office (along with
Walter's "surprise"). He's packing up all his stuff,
including a picture of Felicia and a paperback Felicia
romance. Randy returns, surprised he's still here on his
vacation, and predicts encouragingly that Marshall may even
read Walter's "manuscript" tonight. Walter tells Randy to
go on home to his family, Walter will finish sorting the
mail and lock up. You're a nut, Randy laughs; he accepts
Walter's offer and exits.

Marshall/Ryan/Lorna

Close-up on the package on Marshall's desk - periodically we
see a cross-section of the digital timer inside, ticking
down from 59 minutes. Lorna's upset that Marshall and Ryan
have identified Walter as Felicia's probable kidnapper, and
know where he lives, but they're just sitting here. She
wants them all to rush out and rescue her mom. Ryan
explains that Cass and Frankie are at Walter's place now, as
civilians they have the leeway to gather enough evidence so
the police can justify a search warrant. Marshall kicks
himself for not fingering Walter earlier - he now remembers
seeing Walter in Felicia's entourage at the airport when he
first arrived; then, Felicia's memoir disappeared, and it
was Walter who "found" and returned it. As they wait to
hear from Cass, Lorna tells Ryan he can go be with Vicky at
her hearing, she'll beep him. He replies that he doesn't
want any part of it, and it would only incite Grant. Ryan
promises to stay until they nail Walter.

Cass/Frankie/Walter

The camera pans across Walter's bizarre living room decor.
Frankie stands transfixed by the dragons. Cass rushes
downstairs and reports he found the attic room, a sort of
shrine where Felicia was apparently held but she's now gone.
He has Felicia's boa slung over his shoulder and carries a
pile of manuscript pages - he also found an audio tape and
an empty champagne bottle - apparently she's been drinking
and writing. They start to sit on the couch to comb the
manuscript for clues, when they see Walter's do-it-yourself
bomb manual. They're hopeful it means Felicia's still
alive, but the bomb idea alarms them. Cass searches
upstairs again for more clues about Felicia and/or the bomb
while Frankie tries to phone Ryan, but the phone isn't
working because of the storm [lots of thunder, lightning,
wind - no rain]. By this time, Walter has returned and
peers in the window, seeing Frankie at the phone. He ducks
out of sight before she can catch him, but it gives her the
creeps. She calls for Cass, no answer; she jumps when he
suddenly appears. He's brought down the tape and empty
bottle, and notes that the upstairs seems soundproof from
the downstairs. They decide to return to report to Ryan in
person; they leave the bottle and boa downstairs to aid the
police search, but Cass pockets the tape. Walter watches as
they scurry out. He enters, sees the boa and manuscript
pages, and frantically dashes upstairs screaming for
Felicia, afraid she's been kidnapped[!]. Some time later,
we see him at a pay phone - he reads aloud a rescue scene
from the Felicia paperback as inspiration, then places a
call to Marshall.

Cass/Frankie/Marshall/Ryan/Lorna/Walter

Cass and Frankie rush back to Marshall's office and report
that they found enough for a search warrant. Lorna's afraid
Felicia may be dead - she remembers her own rape when she
was drunk. Frankie reassures her Felicia was apparently
well cared for, probably drank for Walter's benefit to play
for time so she could escape, and maybe it worked. Ryan
calls to get a search warrant, and rushes out to Walter's
place with Lorna on his heels. The phone rings and Marshall
answers - it's Walter, disguising his voice, scratching and
blowing on the phone like it's a bad connection. He claims
to be Walter's neighbor, who noticed something weird going
on at Walter's house, it may involve Felicia. He says he'll
call back in 1/2 hour from a pay phone for a better
connection - his real aim is to make sure Marshall stays put
until the bomb goes off (it's ticked down to 20 minutes).
Eventually Marshall starts to go batty waiting for Ryan to
call; Frankie suggests he do some work while he waits. He
sits on his desk, next to the package (now at 10 minutes),
to sort through his mail. Meanwhile, Ryan and Lorna arrive
at Walter's. Ryan pounds on the door and identifies
himself, but there's no answer. He tries the door, which is
unlocked. They enter to find the living room completely
cleaned up, devoid of all the evidence Cass and Frankie
found.

Felicia/Etc.

Felicia lies on the ground in the woods where she collapsed
near the road. A car drives by. She stirs, holds her head
which is pounding from her hangover, then collapses again.
She tries to sit up and get her bearings, then flashes back
to when she overheard Walter planning his explosive surprise
for Marshall. Walter's going to try to kill Marshall, she
says groggily, I have to warn him. She crawls nearer to the
road and tries to flag down a car. A woman finally stops,
and is about to help her until Felicia starts trying to
explain her strange garb and appearance - I was kidnapped
from a romance festival and held prisoner, Walter made me
dress like one of my characters and got me drunk so I could
write better, we have to get Walter put away, etc. You need
therapy, not a ride, cries the woman; she wriggles out of
Felicia's desperate grasp in terror and dashes back to her
car. As she drives away, Felicia sinks to the ground in
tears of frustration. She wanders around some more, then
sits dejectedly. A man approaches, and stops to watch her -
we only see his legs and feet.

Vicky (& lawyer)/Grant (&
lawyer)/Dana/Matt/Donna/Amanda/Alli

Dana starts her hearing on Vicky's custody agreement
violation. Grant asks to make an opening statement. Of
course, he rails against Vicky for kidnapping his son and
putting him through months of agony. She responds that she
was looking out for Kirk, and nothing the court could do to
her would be worse than losing her son to his father.
Amanda enters and sits with Grant. Donna gets permission to
make a statement; Grant's lawyer tries to interrupt, but
Grant says let her speak. Donna makes an emotional plea for
leniency: Vicky was taken from her at birth and raised by
someone else, and Vicky's actions were partially a result of
fear that the same thing would happen to her son. Grant
responds quietly that his childhood was also less than
nurturing, but he's learned a lot about family lately.
Vicky expects the worst, but Grant takes Amanda's hand and
announces he's dropping the charges. The hearing concludes.
Grant promises Vicky liberal visitation. Vicky says he's
never this generous without an ulterior motive, what is it
this time? Grant notes that she always accuses him when
she's trying to get away with something - what is it this
time? Donna pulls Vicky aside and warns her to keep quiet
or she could end up in jail - she may have lost custody, but
Kirk needs her free. She offers to take Vicky home, but
Vicky doesn't want to go home to an empty house, she's going
to visit some friends instead [wonder who?].  She exits;
Donna snipes a little at Grant, Amanda snipes back, and Matt
tries to make peace. He reminds everyone that they are all
Kirk's family, they all want what's best for him, let's
start acting like it. He asks if he and Donna can visit
Kirk. Grant is delighted to show off his son. They go back
to Grant's house, where Alli joins them. Matt borrows
Alli's instant camera (a gift from Grant), and gets some
shots of Donna and baby, Alli and baby, Donna and Alli and
baby, etc. Amanda pulls Grant aside and confesses she has a
business trip to New York coming up, if it's o.k. with him.
He's all for it, he'll use the time to bond with his son;
but his smile sickens a little when Amanda reveals the trip
will include Evan. She assures him she can handle Evan [in
his dreams!], and Grant claims he has every confidence in
her - in fact, it was her calming influence at the hearing
that kept him from having Vicky thrown in jail, that's why
he relented at the last minute. They embrace, then rejoin
the photography session. After Matt and Donna leave, Grant
and Amanda sit on the couch with Alli and the baby, and talk
about being one big happy family soon.

Jake/Paulina/Vicky

Paulina and Jake return home from their abbreviated
honeymoon with baby "Mark." Paulina enters the house
pushing Mark around in his stroller, and gives him a brief
tour of the house. Jake follows, loaded down with
suitcases, car seat, diaper bag, and the mail in his mouth.
He drops the stuff and collapses on the couch. Paulina
flops on top of him, and he rolls her off. She guesses he
wasn't as happy with their honeymoon as she was; he gets up
and embraces her, saying he's incredibly happy that they're
finally "man and wife." "Husband and wife," she corrects
him. They kiss, and she adds that she's also happy to be
"mommy and daddy," but Jake tries to give her a reality
check and keep her from getting carried away. She goes to
check the mail for some word from Mark's mother, but there's
nothing. Jake suggests he go to the Community Center to see
if anyone reported a lost baby. Paulina objects loudly -
the baby wasn't lost, he was given to her specifically, and
she won't report it to anyone without some sign. She goes
to put the baby down in the guest room, and returns to tell
Jake that Mark is out like a light. "Like a strobe light,"
Jake teases. Paulina wonders if Jake hates having a baby
around, why was he so anxious to get rid of Mark. Jake
responds that he thinks Mark is great, but he's worried that
Paulina is getting too attached. The mother was obviously
going through hard times, he cautions, but she could work
through her problems and want her baby back. Paulina thinks
the mother's note sounded like she wanted her to give the
baby a permanent home. Jake says that's probably wishful
thinking, but Paulina will be a great mother when the time
is right. No, says Paulina, I'm a great mother now, Mark
needs a home and I'm going to give him one. The doorbell
rings; Paulina answers it with annoyance, and is more
annoyed to see Vicky standing there. Paulina lets her in,
and she congratulates them on their marriage. Jake mentions
the baby, and Vicky acts surprised. Paulina explains that
they're babysitting for a friend. Must have been a good
friend, says Vicky. We're very close, Jake answers.
Paulina sympathizes with Vicky's custody problems, and Jake
asks about Vicky's hearing and her court date. He's
surprised to hear that Grant let her off the hook. Vicky
says weakly that now Grant has Kirk, and she's up a creek.
Paulina says she understands; she's already attached to Mark
after only a couple of days, she feels like his mom.
Thought you were just babysitting, Vicky comments. Jake
jumps in, saying Paulina just means it must be even worse
for Vicky.  Mark squeals, and Paulina goes to check on him;
she brings him in and introduces him to Vicky, an old friend
of Jake's. Vicky is obviously moved at the sight, saying
that seeing a baby reminds her of her own situation.
Paulina realizes this must be painful for her, and offers to
go out for formula and diapers so Vicky and Jake can talk in
private. She hands the baby to Jake, gets her coat and
purse, and exits. Jake offers to let Vicky hold the baby.
She accepts gratefully, joyously. As she holds the baby
close to her, Jake asks if she's o.k. Better than o.k., she
answers. She holds the smiling baby up at arms length in
front of her, and beams at him: "We did it, Kirk, we did
it," she says, "and I am never gonna let you go again!"
Jake looks on with alarm. FREEZE FRAME.
