Vicky and Jake rush back to the hospital, where Shane
regretfully reports that Kirkland has suffered an adverse
reaction to an antibiotic administered in the wake of his
brain surgery. Horrified to learn that her son's immune
system is shutting down, Vicky begs Shane to save the
boy's life once again. After bringing Chip to the precinct
house in handcuffs, Toni and Josie explain to an astonished
Joe how their colleague has confessed to being Bay City's
serial rapist. Grant readily agrees to be tested as a possible
genetic match for Kirkland after Vicky reveals that her
blood type won't fit the bill. Warning that a bone marrow
transplant is too risky in this situation, Shane describes for
his young patient's extended family how an experimental
drug treatment is the last best hope for Kirkland's survival.
As Grant insists on risking everything to be the guinea pig
for the dangerous procedure, Michael appeals to Joe to pull
some strings and get Nick released from jail so he can be
tested as a possible match. Chris and Gary scour the train
depot and Rayburn's apartment in an effort to remove any
shred of evidence which could endanger Toni and Josie's
careers. Determined to prevent her husband from
undergoing the drug treatment, Cindy tampers with the
blood samples to ensure that Grant won't be a match.
Anxious to make amends for past sins by saving his
nephew's life, Nick grabs the syringe from Shane and
injects himself with the antibiotic. Cindy tells an appalled
Grant that he could not possibly be Kirkland's biological
father. After convincing a dimwitted co-worker that Josie
locked him in the holding cell as a practical joke, Chip
              makes his escape.
