Here is the update for Another World for Friday, September 13, 1996 (as
always, dedicated to MFF1 until she comes back - probably in November, in
time for the ratings sweeps):

* Grant engineers heroic return, snows Sharlene (but not everyone)
* Felicia opposes Cass's plans; John (finally) pops the question
* Gabe recovering; Josie released, but despondent over career and mom
* Bobby and Paulina spur Jake to action re: Vicky

SOMEWHERE IN THE WOODS OFF HIGHWAY 16
Grant, smearing himself with dirt and leaves, chews Mercer out for
shooting his old pal Gabe - that wasn't our deal! [Ah-ha! We knew it!] He
was a cop, I couldn't help myself - besides, what do you care, you'll look
like a hero, Mercer snorts. Gun-boy pulls out a gun [naturally] - and
tells Mercer to hit him over the head with it - again - again, to make it
look good. I get your million bucks, says Mercer, what's in it for you?

Ah, Cody, Cody, your limited brain couldn't grasp it, smiles Grant
condescendingly. He borrows Mercer's cell phone [WHAT? Mercer lied to
Josie about not having a phone? Imagine!]; with an evil grin at Mercer,
he disguises his voice and makes a phony 9-1-1 call to report a body by
the road.

BAY CITY GENERAL HOSPITAL
John is at his desk when Felicia wakes up, having spent the night on
his office couch. He sits beside her; was there something you wanted to
give me? she hints with a simper. He tells her he wants to spend the rest
of his life with her - they're about to kiss, when his phone rings, he
answers it, then he tells her he has to go, sorry. He exits as Morgan
enters. Morgan tells Felicia there's something weird going on at Cass's
house, he wants her to come and see for herself. They exit [see below].

Meanwhile, Gabe [full of tubes] wakes up to find Lorna at his
bedside. You're not getting out of our wedding that easily, she kids. He
asks if Gary and Josie survived the shoot-out with Mercer. Later, Lorna
runs into John. She confides that it scares her to see Gabe so weak and
hurt; through the long surgery, she drew comfort from touching her
engagement ring. He'll be fine, says John. He escorts her back to Gabe's
room, where Cindy is fussing around his bed. Cindy gives Lorna a hug,
then exits with John to give Lorna and Gabe some privacy. Lorna reports
that Josie and Gary are fine, still no word on Mercer - just focus on
getting better, let Joe and the BCPD handle the investigation, she urges.

At Josie's bedside, Gary tells her Gabe made it through surgery o.k.,
he'll be fine. He tries to get her to talk to him about her traumatic
experience, but she just wants out of there (wide open spaces). Sharlene
enters, asks them (only half-kidding) to steer clear of dangerous felons
until after the wedding. Then she shows them the headline about Mercer
kidnapping Grant, he only tried to help, I'm afraid for his life. Josie
has trouble accepting Grant as a hero, can't believe Sharlene would get
involved with the slime. Not now, says Sharlene, he's a human being
[debatable, IMHO] in danger. Josie just wants out of there, and exits to
get dressed to go home. Gary confides to Sharlene that Josie is refusing
to face what happened with Fax and Mercer. Let her heal in her own way,
Sharlene advises [wish she'd tell that to Felicia-Knows-Best, re: Cass].

Joe enters, reveals they just got a 9-1-1 call from a trucker [let's see
his truck...] about a body by the highway, could be Grant. By the time
Josie comes back to pack her things, Gary tells her that Sharlene went to
the E.R. to wait for Grant to be brought in (still no word on Mercer).

Gary is a little grateful to Grant for saving Gabe's life, but Josie is
skeptical - how could Mama go from being married to a wonderful guy like
John [who only zoned out, lost her the Frame family farm, then dumped her
for a flashier woman because she didn't get over her childhood trauma fast
enough] to being involved with a slime like Grant? [O.K., I guess maybe
Grant's worse...] People have to make their own mistakes, says Gary; let's
get out of here. [see below]

VICKY'S HOMESTEAD-IN-PROGRESS
Bobby comes back to work on the house; Vicky apologizes for Jake's
over-protective (jealous?) behavior, and promises to keep Jake out of
their lives for a while.  She goes upstairs to clean up in the kids' room;
while picking up their toys, she comes across a baseball - written on it
is "To Kirkland - Love, Daddy." She sighs in disgust at Grant's gift.

Downstairs, Bobby comes across Jake's "Rely on Jake" newspaper
headline sign which he'd made for Vicky; with a snort, he starts to toss
it in the trash, when Jake walks in and orders him to leave it alone.

Bobby agrees not to toss the sign, but informs Jake that Vicky doesn't
really want him around. Then he mocks Jake for "using the back door ...

a real man would walk in through the front door." Jack scoffs, but Bobby
continues that a stupid sign won't make Vicky fall in love with Jake -
they look up to see Vicky standing in the archway. She tries to throw
Jake out - you almost cost me my nanny and my handyman, what's wrong with
you?!? Bobby's here, he's working, Jake quickly points out. Vicky drags
Jake out for a private chat on the porch: apparently you can't be in my
life without trying to dominate it, so I want you to leave me alone for
the time being. He repeats that she needs him, then shows her the
newspaper headline - thought you might get a kick out of this. She moans
in disbelief and mock sympathy at the news of Grant's kidnapping, but
scoffs as she reads that Grant risked his life, she doesn't buy it. Then
she worries, about what to tell Kirk if Grant gets killed [how about
"Break out the punch and cookies"?]. Rely on Jake, says Jake. Her phone
rings inside; they rush in, Bobby hands her the phone, it's Chris looking
for Jake. He reports he's at the hospital, they're bringing in Grant, no
word on if he's dead or alive, you'd better get down here. Jake updates
Vicky, promises to find out the details, and rushes out [see below]. As
Vicky smiles after him, Bobby pounds on the bottom stair step with a
hammer to break the spell - he claims a nail was sticking out. Sometimes
you can't see what's right in front of you, he says cryptically.

BOBBY'S APARTMENT
Later, Bobby is at home when his doctor stops by (at Bobby's request)
on his way to the hospital. Bobby tells Dr. Kessler that he's been having
a recurring dream about some woman, he doesn't see her face, she's singing
some sappy song (not even country) - am I going nuts? Kessler just
smiles, tells him to call his office and set up an appointment, and exits.

Bobby tries to get some sleep, but dreams about a laughing woman singing a
sappy song. He wakes up, distressed - what's wrong with me?

BACK AT THE HOSPITAL
Gary wheels Josie toward the exit [see below], in time to see Grant
stagger in, leaning on Tom'as, "bravely" refusing a wheelchair. [Grant
plays this whole scene to the hilt, feigning modesty but making sure all
the reporters and Sharlene hear how brave and generous he was.] As
reporters crowd around, Grant asks about Gabe, then pretends to be
astonished and baffled when they question him about his heroism and
amazing escape. Sharlene pushes through the crowd and runs to his arms.

Jake enters about this time, as Sharlene is calling Grant a hero for
saving Josie, Gary and Gabe. I honestly [like he knows the meaning of the
word - I'm surprised his tongue didn't fall out!] wasn't thinking of
myself, Grant gasps (loudly), just glad my FRIEND, GABE, the POLICE
CAPTAIN, will be all right. John enters and insists he be taken to the
E.R. to get checked out. Tom'as and John help support Grant; You were
right, Sharlene, Grant shouts over the reporters as he exits, Tom'as will
make a fine doctor, I'm just glad I was able to GIVE HIM that SCHOLARSHIP
to med school. All Grant's b.s. is too much for Jake, and Chris can't
stop him from getting in a few digs: Hey, Prisoner #6859, Mercer was your
buddy in the joint, what's the real story, huh? Sharlene, enraged, hauls
off and slaps Jake hard across the face. The press watches as they have a
shouting match - Jake reminds her of all the evil stunts Gun-Boy has
pulled, while Sharlene defends him for taking desperate actions when he
thought he was losing his son, he's changed, he's a hero now, but I'm sure
your paper won't admit it. Jake chokes on the word, how can a sensible
woman like you buy his act? Sharlene warns Chris to keep Jake away from
her and Grant, and she follows behind Grant and John.

As the press backs off to await Grant's return, Paulina comes up and
teases Jake about the fight, reminds her of when they were married. Don't
go there, he asks gently; but he can tell she's really stressed out. She
says she's worried about Joe and the other cops trying to find the killer
who shot Gabe; hmm, muses Jake, wonder why that "killer" didn't kill
Harrison?? He admits he keeps forgetting Paulina is a cop's wife now,
gives her a comforting hug and a hanky as she bursts into tears on his
shoulder, and recalls how they used to only care for each other, now we're
frettin' over Carlino - er, I mean Joe. But Paulina says it's obvious
Jake is in love with Vicky, and counsels him to go for it, tell her how
you feel, and stop making the rest of us miserable! Jake pretends to
check to make sure Joe isn't around, gives Paulina a fond kiss, and rushes
off [see below].

In the examining room, Joe observes as John checks out Grant's
condition, lots of bruising but no internal injuries. Joe takes his
statement, and Grant claims he was blindfolded near the end, but he
"remembers" a suspicious amount of detail from before Mercer tossed him
from the truck - you cops are doing a great job, he sucks up to Joe (who
doesn't seem impressed). Sharlene enters; John tells her Grant will be
fine, then John and Joe exit as Sharlene expresses her gratitude to Grant
for saving her daughter's life. Grant, with Sharlene at his side, steps
out in the corridor to update the reporters; John and Joe watch him
skeptically as he claims he's no hero, the real heroes are Gabe, Josie,
and all the cops who are trying to catch Mercer - maybe my statement will
give them some clues to find him. Grant has done more than anyone could
expect from one man, says Sharlene; John rolls his eyes and exits.

As Grant retrieves his coat from the examining room, Sharlene offers
him a ride home, she owes him so much for what he's done [I'LL say!]. You
don't owe me anything, he says, I acted freely. I can do that, too, she
answers - and she lays a big kiss on him, and he responds. [Eeeewwwww!]

BACK TO THE WOODS
Instead of going home, Josie makes Gary take her out along the
highway where the cops are combing the woods for clues about Mercer. Gary
wonders how Mercer found the tunnel under the trestle when he and the cops
couldn't; Josie says she was convinced he'd been there before, he knew all
the tunnels like he'd memorized a map. Another weird thing, he was an
escaped convict, should have been scared, but instead he was totally
confident at every step. She admits she was terrified, but Mercer helped
her focus on getting back to Gary. She still refuses to give in to her
emotions and let it out. They find a quiet spot to sit and talk. She
says she had a chance to fire on Fax, but her hand was shaking so much she
missed. Gary insists it wasn't her fault, but she says he wouldn't cut
any other cop this much slack. She beats herself up for failing to take
control with Fax or Mercer, I'm supposed to be a trained cop, but instead
I let down Gabe and the whole department. Everyone's proud of you, you're
my hero, says Gary. Josie isn't convinced.

WINTHROP-FRAME HOUSE
Morgan and Felicia enter Cass's house to find him packing boxes. He
announces that he's decided to sell the house [AAARRRRGGGGHHH!!!] and
move
into a suite in the swanky new hotel being built up on Bay Hill, he
already put down a deposit to be their first residents. Felicia is
appalled, reminds him how happy he and Charlie were here, she'll miss her
back yard, her garden... She'll get used to a life of luxury, says Cass
[yikes - careful, Cass, sounds like another Maggie in the making!], I'm
making my own luck from now on, be happy for me. This is a big mistake,
says Felicia [she's been a real busybody lately, but this time I have to
agree with her - Frankie will tear him to ribbons when she comes back
(probably during the November sweeps) and finds out he sold her house!].

She worries that he's trying to recapture the high-roller Cass he used to
be. Cass insists he just wants a comfortable life for himself and
Charlie, selling the house will give him the money he needs to do that.

I've grieved quite a bit, he adds; Frankie would want me to get on with
life and be happy, that's what I'm trying to do, and what I need from you
is your support.

BACK AT THE HOSPITAL
Felicia returns to John's office, starts to tell him about Cass, but
her John immediately grabs her in his arms and kisses her passionately.

Then he pulls out a huge engagement ring and asks her to be his wife,
you're the one I was meant to spend the rest of my life with, please say
yes. She gazes at him dreamily.

BACK AT VICKY'S HOUSE
Vicky walks in the front door looking for Bobby, and is surprised to
find Jake waiting for her. He tells her he's sick of all the dancing
around and fighting they've been doing, ever since their impromptu kiss -
it's gotta stop. She's worried that he doesn't want to be friends
anymore. Friends don't date, he says; I don't want to be your friend - I
want you to go on a date with me, would that be all right? She turns and
looks at him with a curious smile. FREEZE FRAME.

That's it for now,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
