Here's a quick-and-dirty update for Another World for Friday, 9/6/96:

Bay City Herald - Jake gets a call from his reporter in Texas who's
discovered something very interesting about Bobby. Later Matt comes in,
Jake expects another tongue-lashing but Matt actually compliments him on
the recent coverage of Frankie's death, the Stalker's demise, etc. - the
last couple of weeks, our paper has been something I wouldn't have been
ashamed to show Mac, unlike before, says Matt. He also approves that Jake
submitted Chris's work for a journalism award; but he continues to be
upset that Josie is still missing. Then Grant comes in with his police
bodyguard; he seems to be complaining about being harassed by the press
about his relationship to escaped convict Cody Mercer, who he happened to
have met in prison. Both Matt and Jake sense he's hiding something and
press him with more questions. The guy's a stone killer, says Grant, run
his picture, warn the public - but keep my name out of it, or you'll hear
from my attorney!

Vicky's house - Vicky is up on a counter trying to open the kitchen window
when she slips off; Bobby just happens to enter just then, and catches her
in his manly arms [oh, yeah, ho-hum, that's always happening to me -
falling off a ladder or desk or something, and being caught by attractive,
eligible young men...]. They both act a little embarrassed; he
recommends she leave the window shut until he can fix it. As they are
discussing repair options, Jake comes in (door was open) and greets Vicky
(warmly) and Bobby (smugly). Jake makes an issue of seeing Bobby working
at Carlino's, isn't that a conflict - but Vicky says she knows all about
it, they've already discussed it. She and Bobby go back to discussing
kitchen repairs - Jake rolls his eyes because it looks like flirting to
him (and to us). Later the kids come home from school; Steven wants Jake
to stay for dinner with them. Vicky sends them up to wash their hands
[which takes about 2 hours, apparently - they never return], and invites
Bobby to join them as well. Bobby tries to refuse, but Jake insists - so
we can get to know you better, he grins. Bobby reluctantly agrees, and
Jake claps his hands and giggles with delight. Later, as they prepare for
dinner, Jake "casually" asks Bobby about his background, where's he from?

It comes out that he was from East Texas, but born in Texarkana; hmmm,
muses Jake, I had a buddy who went there - to the, uh, BLUE RIDGE
FACILITY
- ever hear of it???? Facility for what, asks Vicky. It's a prison, Jake
grins - you spent some time there, didn't ya, Bobby, hmmm? Bobby just
scowls at him from under his eyebrows.

Cory Mansion - Rachel tries to talk Maggie out of making this move to
L.A., but Maggie is determined to get away from all the gossip and
criticism from people who think she got pregnant on purpose to trap Nick
into marriage [go figure...], it's best for the baby if we start a new
life in a new place. Rachel warns her she'll regret dropping her plans
for college, and regret leaving her support group behind. Maggie insists
she'll love it if Rachel wants to come out and visit anytime, but doesn't
even need her to drive her to the airport. Do you have referrals?

worries Rachel. Huh? says Maggie. You know, the name of a doctor,
hospital etc. in L.A.? Oh, yeah, lies Maggie, referrals, right here in my
purse... They hug goodbye, although Maggie looks a little guilty.

Hospital - Raphael takes the copy of Maggie's doctor bill (on which he's
changed the name of the patient) to Tom'as, to get him to translate the
medical codes. Tom'as confirms what Raphael had suspected: the patient
had a pregnancy test, but it came back negative, no baby. Raphael gets
some hospital stationery and composes a little letter of his own to "Mr.

and Mrs. Nick Terry," supposedly from Maggie's doctor.

Carlino's - Nick goes over to talk to Sofia; Paulina wants to kick him
out, but Sofia says it's o.k., she'll listen. He tells her he and Maggie
are moving to L.A. - which she already knew, thanks to Maggie's big mouth.

He tells her how much it hurt to see her so friendly with Tom'as the other
night, he can't stand to see her without being able to be with her; she
snaps back that she's sick and tired of hearing how much HE's hurting,
what about the damage he's done to other people - and don't say you want
us to be friends, friends are people I trust, and you and Maggie don't
qualify - now get out before my guests arrive. He sees the place is
decorated for her 21st birthday party, happy birthday, he says. She flees
to the kitchen, where Paulina gives her a comforting hug; he knocks over a
chair in frustration, then picks it up, and then pulls out a small present
from his pocket and puts it on the counter, and exits.

Bay City Herald - Nick goes to the paper to clear out his stuff, when
Raphael happens to drop by to wish him well. BTW, says Raphael, this
letter came to the mansion, I thought you should have it. He hands Nick
the phony letter to Mr. & Mrs. Terry, and exits - but he stays nearby and
peeks around a corner to make sure Nick takes the bait. Eventually Nick
gets curious and opens the letter: "Although, as I explained to Mrs.

Terry on the phone, she is not pregnant at this time, there is no reason
why she could not conceive a child in the future..." Nick is floored by
this new development; as Raphael continues to spy, Maggie bounces in to
pick Nick up to go to the airport - Nick just glares at her in silence.

Hospital - Morgan gives Cindy a tour of the hospital; they toy around with
flirting, then she says she heard that the psycho resident he told her
about had murdered Morgan's girlfriend. She sympathizes about senseless
loss, she lost her sister and nephew (Gabe's wife and son) in a fire. It
gets better, she assures him, I coped at first by throwing myself into my
hospital work. She admits Gabe has been so busy, he and Lorna haven't had
time to socialize with her. On an impulse, Morgan invites her to Sofia's
party - lots of my friends and lots of Gabe's friends will be there. She
accepts.

Carlino's - Morgan introduces Cindy to Tony, then to Joe and Paulina.

Cindy remarks about all the nice people she's met, especially Lorna; as
she peppers Morgan with questions about her, he admits he and Lorna were
once an item, it didn't work out, but she's a great person. Cindy
apologizes for being nosy, but she'd still like to get to know this
wonderful woman better... Matt and Rachel enter; Rachel gives Sofia a
bunch of balloons, symbolizing dinner and a hot air balloon ride for 2 as
a gift. Matt gives her a bouquet of 21 roses, one for each year. Joe
wants her to start opening her gifts, but Paulina insists they eat first.

Sofia sniffs the roses, and she and Matt exchange a meaningful look across
the crowd. Later she blows out the candles on her cake, and Tony makes
her make the first cut for good luck; as Rachel offers to serve the cake,
Joe and Paulina dance, and Matt asks Sofia to dance too. He asks her
about how she feels about Nick and Maggie leaving town; it's a relief, she
says, now I can put it all behind me and look toward my future. After
they eat, she opens her gifts: Joe and Paulina give her a hope chest,
which her mom wanted her to have when she turned 21. Matt gives her a
sculpture of a bird (looks like a turkey to me), which Rachel says is the
first thing he's ever made that he ever showed anyone. Everyone
congratulates him, encourages him to follow in Rachel's artistic footsteps
and keep sculpting. They think they're done, but Cindy finds one more
gift on the counter. Sofia opens it, it's a beautiful gold bracelet; but
she finds a card in the box, and as she reads it, she gets very upset and
crumples up the card.

Trestle - As Josie lies unconscious at the foot of the ladder in the pit,
Gary is searching around on the surface. Gabe comes up and tells him he
has to come back, Ozzie is more coherent and is asking for Gary, maybe he
can tells us where Josie is.

Police station - Gabe and Gary arrive at the police station, where Grant
is waiting to talk to Gabe. Gabe makes him cool his heels while he goes
in the office to talk with Gary. They've just come from the hospital, and
they discuss how Ozzie was no help, just babbled about Jabberwocky and
some hole, still incoherent as ever. Gary thinks Ozzie knows more that he
was saying, maybe trying to communicate in his own twisted way. Gabe
tells the clueless Gary what Jabberwocky means, a reference to Alice in
Wonderland. Gary says he'll go check it out. He exits, and Grant grabs
Gabe and urges him to reassign his bodyguard - he'd be more use to you on
the search for Josie, don't waste him protecting me. Gabe disagrees -
Mercer is on the loose, could be coming here for you, you don't want to
face him alone. Later Gary returns with Josie's copy of Alice in
Wonderland and pulls Gabe back in his office - I've figured it out, he
says, Ozzie was reading this book when he stayed with us, maybe he's
trying to tell us Josie "pulled an Alice" and fell down a hole while she
was chasing Fax! Gabe is intrigued.

Back at the trestle - After Gabe and Gary rush off, Cody ("The Killer")
Mercer comes out of hiding - this place is crawling with cops, he growls.

He goes off to find a hiding place. Meanwhile, Josie hallucinates that
Gary appears on the ladder, urging her to try again to climb the ladder,
you can do it. Despite her hurt leg, she promises to try; Gary's image
disappears and her head clears, but she hobbles over to the ladder and
tries to make some progress. Suddenly she notices someone behind her,
it's Mercer. [Gee, could her luck get any worse? AW presents Women in
Jeopardy, Pt. 97...] She bursts into tears of relief that someone's
finally come to rescue her, but it soon becomes clear that this guy isn't
with the Water Company, not part of any search team, just stumbled on to
her. He wants to know how she got there; in a rare burst of good sense,
she decides to be evasive and claims she was doing shots of tequila at a
party, passed out, next thing she knew she was in this hole, doesn't know
where she is or how she got here but she's been here for days waiting to
be rescued. Hmm, he figures, if you've been here for days, it must mean
the cops don't know about this place, could be safe after all. She tells
him she's hurt and needs to get to the hospital, but he growls that she's
not going anywhere, and makes some leering suggestions about having her
around. She tries to push him away, and then apparently she hears a noise
or voices from down the tunnel and tries to call out. He grabs her from
behind and puts his hand over her mouth, then pulls out a gun - if you try
to yell, I'll kill you, he snarls. FREEZE FRAME.

As ever,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
