Here's a short update for 9/3/96 -- today's episode mostly centered
around
the search for Josie....

JOSIE/GARY

Josie and Gary are both asleep and dreaming of each other. Gary dreams
that he is in a place with fog swirling all around, and he finds Josie
lying curled up on the ground. When he goes to wake her up, she
disappears.
Meanwhile, Josie dreams that Gary appears before her down in the
manhole,
dressed in full uniform, but he dissolves when she tries to go to him.
They both wake up....

VICKY/BOBBY/DONNA

Vicky is staring at Bobby in a way that disconcerts him, but when he
calls
her on it she claims it's nothing. Donna comes to visit and they turn
on
the tv set to hear a special bulletin in which Gabe offers a reward for
any

information leading to Josie. After a bit, Vicky and Donna both leave
to
go out, but not before Donna comments on how odd Vicky is acting.
Donna
makes a comment about Bobby's "sculpted chest"...

GABE/JOE/MICHAEL/JOHN/GARY

Gabe comes into his office followed by the Hudson brothers. Michael is
the one who is putting up the money for the reward. Everybody hopes
that
the bulletin will have some effect, but Gabe warns that this sort of
thing
attracts more cranks than anything else. They get a call on the
hotline
and Gary rushes off to follow up on it.....

SHARLENE/GABE/JOE/JOHN/MICHAEL/DONNA/GRANT/JAKE/CHRIS

Everybody is milling around in the police station front office.
Sharlene
shows up at Gabe's door in time to hear Gabe and Joe saying how the
more
time that passes, the less likely they are to find a missing person
alive.
Sharlene blows up and says she won't hear of it, how dare they be so
defeatist? Gabe calms her down, and then Sharlene says that she really
came there to thank Gabe for setting up the hotline. Jake and Chris
show
up. Chris is writing a story about Josie and he wants to check with
Gabe
to make sure that he's not revealing any information that the cops
don't
want released yet. Gabe okays the story and even thanks Jake for not
sensationalizing like he usually does. Grant shows up, and as the
Hudson
brothers look on with an evil eye, he comforts Sharlene and they leave
together. Donna offers emotional support to John, and tells Michael
how
wonderful he is for putting up the money. Donna and Michael embrace...

JOSIE

Josie finds a shovel and uses the sharp edge to saw through the rope
tied
around her wrists. When she finally gets it off, her wrists are all
bloody
from the abrasion. She discovers a door, but after yelling and
pounding
on it for a while, she realizes that it is locked from the outside...

GARY/TIBBS/GABE/JOE

Gary tracks down the lead to the address given him and no one is there;
there
is only a note stuck in the door saying "HA HA, no one's home, I fooled
the
cops!" Gary is furious at the prank. He returns to the stationhouse
and
throws things around in his anger. Gabe and Tibbs calm him down
eventually.
Back in Gabe's office, Joe asks the Captain what next, and Gabe says to
call the Harbor Patrol and tell them to start dragging the water near
the
docks, but to keep it quiet -- he doesn't want the family to know yet.

GRANT/SHARLENE

Grant and Sharlene having been putting up flyers all over town with
Josie's
picture and stats on them. They stop for a meal, and Grant tries to
comfort
and reassure Sharlene. He tells her how brave Josie is, and how
Sharlene
shouldn't stop fighting, because Josie is fighting right now, wherever
she
is. Sharlene talks a little about Frankie, and how it's unbelievable
that
someone so full of life could be taken away from them. Grant
commiserates
and says he also knows what it's like to experience a great loss, and
you
can't let the despair of it swallow you up. As they both get up to
leave,
Sharlene's nerves are strung so tight that she loses her footing and
almost
collapses, but Grant catches her. They embrace, and she puts her head
on
his shoulder and weeps...

VICKY/PAULINA/LORNA

Vicky, Paulina and Lorna are having coffee at Carlino's and talking
about
what they all have in common -- being a cop's wife/girlfriend. Paulina
says she knows what it's like to kiss the man you love goodbye every
morning
and not know if that's the last time you're going to see him. Lorna
says
that cops are trained to handle danger, however, and they know what
they're
doing. Vicky says that's right, that's exactly what she used to tell
herself
every morning when Ryan strapped on his gun and put on his badge....As
they
all talk, Lorna looks more and more apprehensive and unhappy....

BOBBY/PAULINA/JOE/JAKE/VICKY

A bit later, Bobby comes to Carlino's to continue work on repairing the
damage to the kitchen. Joe demands of Paulina an explanation -- he was
going to check on their financial situation before they hired the guy!
Paulina pulls Joe off to the side and explains their barter
arrangement.
Meanwhile, Vicky says to Jake that something strange has been happening
to her recently, that all the pain and agony over Ryan is slowly being
transformed into something else. She can't help glancing at Bobby as
she talks.....Later, Jake comes across Bobby in the kitchen and grills
him about his past, where did he grow up, etc. Bobby is vague and
evasive,
and tells Jake that he doesn't appreciate being interrogated. Jake
drops
some snide remarks and calls him "Cowboy"...

GARY/JOSIE

Down in the manhole, Josie discovers enough dripping water to clean
herself
off a bit. She prays for Gary to come and find her. At the same time,
Gary is taking a shower at home and can't stop worrying about Josie...

GABE/LORNA

Lorna comes to visit Gabe in his office, bearing food, aspirin and a
clean
shirt. He tells her she's going to make some lucky man a good wife
someday.
He confesses to Lorna that it's hard to stay upbeat, that every time
the
phone rings or someone comes in he's afraid it's going to be bad news.
Gabe says he feels like he's about to lose a member of his family...

JOSIE/GARY

Josie uses the shovel to take a few whacks at all the rats that are
keeping

her company down in the manhole. She hunkers down and tries to
remember
what Gary taught her at the academy about emergency survival
techniques.
First, assess the situation: She does, and despairingly concludes it's
pretty
bleak, sir...she's been down there over a day. Meanwhile, temporarily
at
a loss for what to do next, Gary is sitting quietly in a chair and
looking
bereft, as he clasps his hands together as if in prayer. In the
manhole,
Josie is starting to feel cold. The last shot juxtaposes Gary's face
in

close-up and Josie huddled and shivering.....FREEZE FRAME.
