LAUREL AND HARDY, ALIVE AND WELL
Jake/Paulina/Joe

Jake, just back from rescuing Vicky, is promising Paulina a wonderful
evening, not noticing that something's distracting her. He explodes when
Joe emerges from the shower wearing only a towel. Joe "apologizes" and
hands Jake the towel, flexing his pecs with a grin. Paulina tries to
cover Jake's eyes; That's disgusting, Jake exclaims. Paulina and
scrambles to explain how Joe got covered in soot cleaning the fireplace;
but Joe tries to make it sound like they're fibbing. Jake is much more
annoyed than suspicious, objecting violently to Joe's apparent plans for a
"wienie roast" with Paulina. No, he's here on police business, honest,
Paulina explains: he's my bodyguard.

While Joe is getting dressed, Jake says he's seen first-hand how
dangerous Justine is, and agrees it's a good idea for Paulina to have a
police guard, but he just wishes it wasn't Joe. He tells Paulina we'll
just have to ignore Joe, he won't interrupt the plans I have for us this
evening. Joe comes down, shirtless (carrying his wet tank-top), and Jake
insists he do his guard-dog routine from an outdoor doghouse. Joe
mischievously thanks Paulina for the great dinner, and exits. Paulina
tries to smooth things over with Jake, but Jake just says it's obvious Joe
is in love with you, and who could blame him - you're wonderful, I'd fight
1,000 "Joes" to keep you. She gets a funny look, and Jake says it's o.k.
to admit you feel sorry for the guy. He stops in mid-spiel long enough to
gaze into her eyes - you are so beautiful, he whispers. Then he tells her
to go change into something "more comfortable," he has a surprise for
her, don't come down until I tell you. They kiss a few times, then
Paulina goes upstairs. Jake smiles after her, then snarls toward the door
where Joe just exited.

Later, Jake, all dressed up, answers the doorbell to find Joe patting
down the florist delivery guy. Jake rags on Joe for being overzealous,
gives the guy a big tip for his troubles, and brings in the huge flower
arrangement. While Jake is chewing out Joe, a chef and his assistant
arrive carrying a chafing dish; Joe lifts the lid, sticks his finger in
the sauce and tastes it. Too much garlic, but no arsenic, he says. Jake
welcomes the chefs in, and Joe promises to be just as vigilant all night.

Great, says Jake smugly, sticking a couple of large bills in Joe's
tank-top: spread it around, it's a special night. He shuts the door in
Joe's face, and Joe snarls. Jake continues fussing around with
last-minute instructions to the agreeable chefs, making sure everything is
perfect. He puts on his white dinner jacket as the doorbell rings. This
time he finds Joe frisking the violinist, almost dropping the violin when
he searches the case for weapons. Jake extricates the musician, then
advises Joe that all the visitors are here now, you'd better make yourself
invisible for the rest of the night. Joe "helpfully" straightens Jake's
tie, then Jake remembers they're rivals and slams the door on him -
catching his coattail in the door. He re-opens the door to release his
coat, snarls at Joe's smirk, and slams the door again.

AH, ROMANCE
Lorna/John/Felicia

Lorna warns John that Laurie is about to go on the news tonight with
her malpractice accusations regarding Ben's death. She advises him to
call a press conference to give the hospital's side and control the
damage. John testily refuses to play politics, and also refuses to sign
the formal statement Lorna wrote to make the hospital look like it's
taking responsibility without admitting any wrongdoing. I'm not going to
lie, he tells her. As they argue, Felicia arrives and takes Lorna's side,
urging John to let Lorna do what she was hired to do; but Lorna tells
Felicia to butt out. John says his job is to care for his patients, and
he returns to his office in a snit. Lorna tells Felicia that John and the
hospital are on the verge of a disaster, and John refuses to lift a finger
to stop it. Felicia says she read Laurie's story in the paper, and they
agree that Laurie is too upset to think clearly. Lorna says she's too
busy to keep their dinner plans, and hurries back to work.

Nora (secretary?) tells John that Sharlene hasn't returned his call.

He's obviously upset. She exits. Felicia waves a white handkerchief
through a crack in John's door, and he welcomes her in. He comes out from
behind his desk and invites her to sit on the couch and chat. He tells
her he and Lorna will work through their differences, and admits he really
misses Sharlene and Gregory. Ben's death made him think about Greg even
more, he says, and also reminded him of all the kids he saw die
senselessly in Vietnam. Then he talks about how old he's feeling, and
Felicia admits she'd like to go back 10 or 20 years her own self. No,
smiles John, you're perfect just as you are. A little embarrassed, she
says she really has to leave, but he asks her to stay a while longer. He
says he's finished reading her novel, and she gets flustered when he raves
about how talented she is, how even though her characters live outlandish
lives, their emotions are very real - jealousy, fear, desire, passion...

You must really be missing Sharlene, blushes Felicia - but I always hope
in some small way to inspire my readers. I get the feeling you've only
scratched the surface of your talent, John compliments her. I'll never
write the great American novel, she chuckles modestly, unconsciously
patting his hand - then she draws her hand back and apologizes. Don't be
sorry, says John, intertwining his fingers with hers - and then I won't
say you're a very beautiful and very intriguing woman. Felicia, unsure
how much (if anything) to read into his words, studies his face for a
clue.

MORE SECRETS
Ryan/Vicky/Michael/Donna

Ryan sits at Vicky's hospital bed as she describes the torture
Justine put her through, and how thinking about Kirk helped her survive.

Ryan lies that Kirk is just fine, and Vicky expresses relief and
gratitude. Ryan cheers her up by promising her a junk-food orgy when she
gets home. Vicky says she can't wait to be home with Kirk and Ryan, and
she's never letting him out of her sight again. Then Ryan says she needs
to rest and build up her strength, and he has some loose ends to tie up.

She demands to know if that means Justine is still at large, but Ryan
refuses to tell her anything, it's for your own protection. No offense,
she says in dismay, but I wouldn't be in here if you'd told me the truth
about Justine from the start!

Donna and Michael arrive and rush to Vicky's bedside. Ryan says he
has to go, and promises he'll be right back. We are not finished, Vicky
says pointedly. Michael expresses his gratitude to Ryan for rescuing
Vicky, and gives him a big bear hug. Ryan exits, and Donna and Michael
tell Vicky how happy they are to have her back, and how proud they are,
she was so brave. Vicky says after all she's been through she'll never
again take things for granted, and says she's glad to see Michael's doing
so well after the bone marrow transplant from Nick. Donna says he's been
ignoring medical advice until Vicky was found; Vicky tells him I'm back
now, so go check in with your doctor. Michael guesses she wants to talk
with Donna, and agrees to go.  I knew you wouldn't die, Vicky teases him;
Michael laughs, and says he knew the same about her. He surprises Donna
with a peck on the cheek, and exits; Donna looks a little embarrassed, but
pleased. Vicky asks to use Donna's phone to call Bridget and check on
Kirk. Donna refuses, and evasively promises there'll be time for that
tomorrow.

JUSTINE'S BOYS
Grant/Carl/Ryan

Grant sits in the subterranean nursery, fretting over his missing
mother and son. He hears a police radio crackle in the crib where an
officer had left it, and tunes it in, hearing the APB on Justine. He
switches it off and clips it onto his belt as he hears footsteps on the
stairway. Carl comes down and confronts him about his involvement in the
whole mess. Grant claims he had no idea how sick Justine was, but Carl
accuses him of secretly wanting Vicky out of the way so he could have
Kirk. Grant denies it, and objects to how Ryan has the police tracking
Justine like an animal when she obviously needs help. She's my mother,
and she loved me, he whimpers. A weak son and a deranged mother are a
dangerous team, Carl sneers. She's Ryan's mother, too, Grant says
petulantly. Carl grabs Grant in a headlock and threatens to strangle him
for letting his lies put Kirk in danger - but he releases him, saying he
wants Grant to live, so he can suffer like the coward he is. Carl exits
in disgust, leaving Grant gasping for breath.

Carl goes by the hospital and finds Ryan brooding outside Vicky's
room. Ryan tells him Vicky's much better, but still no word on Justine or
Kirk. Not good enough, says Carl, it's time I brought in a few villains
to help out. Ryan rejects the idea, insists on doing it by the book, he
doesn't want Carl going back to his old life of crime. I won't rest until
I see Justine brought to justice, vows Ryan. I won't rest until I see her
dead, Carl answers coldly.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END?
Maggie/Lucy/Justine/Rachel/Carl

Maggie finds Lucy unconscious on the floor, and runs to get Rachel.

Justine scurries back in from the terrace and opens the safe behind the
painting. She removes a pile of cash and Rachel's passport, then scurries
out again. Maggie returns with the real Rachel (who's dressed the same as
Justine in a white flowing pantssuit). They try to revive Lucy. Suddenly
Maggie elbows Rachel, and they both stare as Justine tauntingly laughs at
them from the terrace doorway, closes the doors with a flourish, and
vanishes. Maggie is stunned and asks Rachel what gives. Rachel just
grabs Lucy's police radio and exits, telling Maggie to call 911 and tell
them she's going after Justine. Who's Justine? shouts Maggie, but
Rachel's gone.

Carl arrives home to find Maggie and a groggy Lucy on the couch.

He's livid to find that Lucy was unconscious and let Justine get away.

She got me in some Vulcan death grip, I'm luck to be alive, protests Lucy.

Carl is angrier still to learn that Rachel want after her. They've been
gone about an hour, says Lucy, the estate and lakefront are crawling with
cops and roadblocks, they've probably arrested Justine by now. Not good
enough, snaps Carl, call Ryan on your radio. My police radio's missing,
Lucy admits. Oh, yeah, Rachel took it, remembers Maggie.

RACHEL, RACHEL
Justine/Rachel/Ryan/Grant

Justine is driving along with Kirk in the car seat next to her. She
notices that someone is following her, and tells Kirk that she hopes it's
Rachel - after tonight she won't interfere in any more of our plans, she
gloats.

Also driving along, Ryan hears his police radio crackle, and he hears
Rachel's voice calling for help. From the cellar nursery, Grant monitors
their conversation as Rachel tells Ryan she's pursuing Justine toward the
old train depot. I'm on my way, answers Ryan. But so is Grant; he pulls
out his gun, checks it, and dashes out.

Justine pulls up at the trestle, tells Kirk she'll be right back, and
gets out of the car. She approaches the ladder, sees Rachel pull up close
on her trail, and waves so she'll see her. This is too easy, like a moth
to a flame, Justine sneers. She climbs up to the overhead platform, and
Rachel follows - I just want to meet you, cries Rachel. On the platform,
Rachel asks Justine to turn and face her. Of course, they look identical
- except that Justine is wearing the famous necklace. Rachel is astounded
at the resemblance, and says she sees now why everyone was fooled.

Justine pushes her down and taunts her about how she's so easy to replace,
except that her life is so excruciatingly dull. Then she hints how the
best part was seducing Carl, except it was Carl who pursued me, even after
he knew it wasn't you - over and over, she chortles. No, he wouldn't do
that, insists Rachel, but she's obviously shaken. Justine gloats that
it's true, Carl repeatedly made love to me, knowing it was me. You'd say
anything to destroy me, argues Rachel, you're insane. Justine's eyelids
[predictably] flutter at the word "insane." She pushes Rachel down on the
tracks and starts to run. Rachel catches her and they struggle. Ryan
arrives at ground level, pulls his gun and climbs the ladder, but of
course he can't tell them apart. Rachel has Justine pinned, and Ryan
tells her to let go, but Rachel says if she does Justine will throw her
off. As Ryan aims his gun from one to the other and back, they both rise,
claim to be Rachel, and beg Ryan for help. Ryan eyes them, uncertain.

Then, Grant arrives and joins the party on the trestle. Both women claim
to be Rachel, but Grant spots the necklace and says he can tell them
apart. Justine makes a break for it down the tracks, but Rachel pushes
her down and tells her it's over (grasping the necklace for some reason).

"'T'ain't over 'til it's over, dearie," Justine snarls - and she shoves
Rachel over the edge with her feet - Rachel rips off the necklace as she
falls. BUT [as if that weren't a big-enough cliffhanger], Ryan is now
convinced the pushee was Rachel and the pusher was Justine, Rachel would
never have done that. As he trains the gun on her, Grant tries to
intervene, and begs her to tell them where Kirk is. If he shoots me,
you'll never know, Justine snarls [apparently familiar with BCPD rescue
statistics]. Ryan approaches Justine (they're both out of the camera
frame); Grant shouts NO!, pulls his gun [we all know what a good shot he
is, assuming he's decided who he's aiming at], and fires. FREEZE FRAME.

Any questions? The answer is - I have no idea! (Like, why didn't Grant
go after Kirk first? How did Justine happen to have the same outfit on as
Rachel? Which BCPD yutz left their police radio at the crime scene? And

how did Gun-Boy manage to get yet ANOTHER gun, after what he did with the

last one?)

Until later,
