DINNER FOR TWO
Joe/Paulina

Joe helps Paulina carry in several bags of groceries, and offers to
stay and help her put them away. She rebuffs him, trying to convince him
she's in no danger from Justine and begging him to clear out before Jake
gets home. Joe says he's looking forward to seeing Jake, so he can "set
him straight about you and me." He claims he can see Paulina isn't happy
with her new arrangement. Again she begs him to leave, Jake's very
possessive. Joe says I know you don't really want me to leave, I can see
it all over your face that you still love me. But I love Jake, too, she
wails, trying to push him out the door. Not like you love me, he says,
what you have with Jake is memories, but you've changed since then, and
what we have is real. Paulina admits she loves Joe, I thought you were my
dream come true, my future, the most honest man I ever knew - but that
wasn't true, was it? You lied to me about Jake - Jake trusted that I would
always love him, but you had no faith in me. She says she owes Jake
another chance. Why? asks Joe, the amnesia may have been real, but he's
still the same creep he's always been. I married him, says Paulina, and I
take my wedding vows seriously. Joe backs off, but refuses to stand
outside to guard her. He knows from her groceries that she intends to
cook Eddie's lasagna recipe, and offers to help her so she won't ruin it.

As an almost-Carlino, he says, you're entitled to know our cooking
secrets. She finally relents, to Joe's delight - I just want you to be
happy, he says.

Later, the table is set for dinner, and Paulina is all dressed up.

She hears a knock at the door and expects it to be Jake, not remembering
that he's not in this episode. Of course, it's Joe, wearing a dinner
jacket - she tells him Jake's still out looking for Vicky. Shame to let
the food go to waste, he says, fishing for an invitation. Reluctantly she
agrees, and lets him in. They sit down to dinner; she takes a bite and
exclaims how good it is. That's Carlino magic, he says. He pours a glass
of wine and insists on making a toast to her: "You're one in a million,
and I love you with all my heart."

BABY BLUES
Cass/Frankie/Morgan/Laurie/John/Courtney

Cass carries Frankie into the hospital, complaining of abdominal
cramps. She tells Morgan it's probably just the burritos she had for
lunch, but he can see how worried they are. He suspects she's having
contractions (at 14 weeks), and has her wheeled into an examining room.

He reassures Cass he'll do his best, and follows her in. While Cass is
pacing, Laurie comes up frantically and begs his help, they told her Ben
died and they took him away, but she refuses to believe it. John sees
this and repeats to her that they did all they could. Laurie screams that
he's a liar, then Cass holds her while she sobs. John wants to give her a
mild sedative, but she refuses to let them drug her so she won't know what
they're doing. Courtney expresses her sorrow for what happened, and
Laurie shrieks that it was Courtney's fault. Cass has to restrain her
from pouncing on Courtney, and tries to calm her hysterical tirade, which
ends in uncontrollable sobs. John sends Courtney for a wheelchair.

Later, John tells Cass that Laurie's in pretty bad shape, he gave her
a sedative and she's with the chaplain, but it's always tough to lose a
child. He asks about Frankie. Cass says Morgan's still with her, no word
yet. John says don't assume the worst, wait and see. Cass wonders why
Laurie was so upset with Courtney. Morgan comes out and says Frankie's
o.k. Cass asks about the baby, but Morgan just says grimly that Frankie
needs to talk to him. Cass understands.

Morgan storms into the locker room, pulls off his shirt and kicks a
locker. Courtney, who was back in a corner, tries to sneak out, but he
stops her. He urges her to let out her anger and frustration, but she
says no, she has rounds. He tells her she can't just bottle it up every
time, it'll make her cold and she'll stop caring. She blames herself for
Ben's death, but Morgan says she's not any more to blame than he is for
Frankie's loss. Sometimes we lose patients, he shouts, and if you can't
grow up and learn to deal with it, then you'd better get out. He
apologizes for yelling and tries to comfort her, but she pulls away -
you're right, she says, I can't do this anymore. He tries to talk her out
of quitting, but she starts emptying out her locker - you want my mug? she
asks. No, he says, I want your stethescope, you won't be needing it.

Fine, she snaps, slamming it into his lovely chest. He puts it on and
tries to listen to her heart. I'm fine, she snarls, pulling away. You
look pretty unhappy, he says, but it'll be worse if you leave, because
medicine is what you really want to do - you lost Ben, but tomorrow
there'll be some other kid who needs you just as much, and you'll be there
for him. He drapes the stethescope back around her neck.

Cass goes in to see Frankie, who's grief-stricken. She tells him
that Morgan did everything he could, but she just couldn't stop the
miscarriage. Cass strokes her hair and tries to tell her it wasn't her
fault. They talk about how much they both wanted this baby. You're o.k.,
that's what's important, says Cass. No it isn't, whimpers Frankie, we had
a baby and now he's gone, and I'll never get to hold him, I wanted to hold
him. He strokes her face and kisses her forehead. She says she feels
guilty for not having more prenatal tests. Cass assures her it wouldn't
have changed anything. We have each other, and Charlie, and we can try
again, he says. She turns her head, not ready for that idea yet. Cass
remembers he has something for her; he reaches into his pocket and pulls
out a "crickle" (crystal) that Charlie had found in the herb garden the
other day, she got so excited and wanted to give it to Mommy, I wish I'd
thought of it sooner. Me too, says Frankie, grasping the stone. We'll be
o.k., he tells her. The nurse comes in to take her to surgery for her
D&C. A few more minutes, Cass tells her. The nurse leaves. You hold on
to your "crickle," he whispers, stroking her face as she weeps.

Later, Morgan runs into Cass, who's still in a daze - it all happened
so fast, says Cass. Morgan assures him Frankie will be fine, she can
still have more babies. I really wanted that child, Cass says with
amazement. Morgan says the sonogram showed the fetal heart had stopped,
they couldn't prevent the miscarriage. He adds that Frankie has to stay
overnight, and Cass says he'll be here. They both say I love you, then
Morgan exits. Then Laurie comes up to the still-dazed Cass, latches on to
him in near-hysterics, and begs him to help her - these people, they
murdered my son!

NO ESCARGOTS, THANKS
Vicky

Vicky, weak with hunger and exhaustion, groggily tries to keep her
sanity. A well-coiffed Donna appears to her and softly chides her about
how grubby she looks, telling her she should clean up herself and this
place. Help me, mother, Vicky pleads in a desperate whisper. She tells
herself she's hallucinating from hunger. Donna, now munching on a nosh,
urges her to keep her mind clear and eat something. She disappears, then
reappears by the drip in the wall where she's just filled a goblet with
water. You have water, she says, and you could always eat worms, like
that downed pilot did to survive - it can't be much different from eating
escargot. Vicky wails for Ryan. Donna again chides her, grow up, Ryan
can't always drop everything to come rescue you, you have 2 little sons
who need you, you can't afford to be finicky about what you eat. Then she
disappears. Vicky reasseses her situation: I have air, I have - bugs...

I'm not THAT desperate - but, maybe Donna does have a point... She
decides she won't consider eating worms, but she will concentrate on home.

She closes her eyes and imagines she's at home on her couch. She expects
to open her eyes and see Bridget with a plate of cookies, but instead she
sees Grant. He scolds her that Donna was right, she's much too thin, and
he offers her a platter that looks like worms. It's steak tartare, he
grins, I ground it myself. She's suspicious of it, but Donna appears and
urges her to eat. The voices are echoing in her brain. I wanna go home,
she croaks from the floor of her cell. She moans about how hungry she is.

Back in the hallucination, she tells Donna o.k., she'll eat ANYthing - but
nothing from Grant. She hears Kirk crying, and picks him up out of the
playpen, but when she unwraps the blankets he's not there. Kirk, Kirk,
she wails. Back in the cell, she wakes up and thinks she hears Kirk
crying in the distance. No, she says repeatedly, I'm going crazy. She
shakes her head around and covers her ears, then listens again: very
faintly, she hears it again. There's a baby crying, she gasps - it's
Kirk!

WHAT TO DO ABOUT MOTHER?
Grant/Justine

Grant is sacked out in a chair in Justine's "living room." Justine
gently awakens him. Despite her soothing denials, he angrily demands to
know what she's done with Vicky. She claims everything she's done has
been out of love for Grant, but he shouts that he's sick of her lies, all
she wants from him is protection so she can continue striking out at her
perceived enemies - Carl, Ryan, Lorna, Rachel, Spencer. No, she insists,
I may have been reckless and impatient, but I only struck out at those who
were keeping me from having you and Kirkland - once we all go away
together, I'll be fine. He asks where she's been for the past few days.

She admits she saw the commitment papers, and couldn't understand why he'd
try to put his own mother in an asylum where she'd be locked up and
drugged and kept in dark isolation, and he'd forget all about her. This
isn't that kind of clinic, he insists, but she doesn't believe him. She's
so manic and out of control that he cradles her face in his hands and
promises he'll never leave her, they'll all be together - but first, you
have to take me to Victoria. Justine evasively claims she doesn't know
where Vicky is. Come off it, mother, says Grant impatiently, I know you
stashed her someplace and tried to make it look like she'd left town, tell
me where she is. There's nothing left to tell, she smirks. Grant is
afraid Justine's killed her, but Justine denies it. When Justine won't
spill the truth about Vicky's whereabouts, Grant grabs her and threatens
to drag her off to Ryan, he'll put you in jail where you belong. She
struggles to free herself. How could you take me to Ryan, she screams, he
hates me, he's arrogant and hateful, like his father Carl. Grant stops
pulling her towards the door, but doesn't let go of her. You're in
serious trouble, he whispers in her ear, but we can fix it all if you'll
take me to Victoria - she's Kirk's mother, surely you can understand how
much he needs her. But he has me now, Justine protests. Of course he
will, Grant coos, as soon as you've gotten some help, but first we have to
take Victoria home. That's a different plan from mine, says Justine,
breaking away; we can consider it, but I still think my plan is best - the
three of us getting away to someplace safe, like Belize or Katmandu...

Grant pulls out his phone and starts dialing, saying she's left him no
choice but to call Ryan. Of course you have a choice, she snarls, you can
come away with us and have the life we were meant to have, or you can call
Ryan and try to lock me up - but then you'd never see your son again.

Don't ever threaten me or my son again, he snarls, now go pack for the
institute. Don't be obtuse, she says, Victoria isn't worth it, come away
with us or you'll never see Kirk again. Grant starts to call Ryan anyway,
but Justine stops him with hints that she's already taken Kirk - I didn't
have time to pack all his things, but we can buy what we need later. It's
your choice, she says, me and Kirkland - or Victoria. Grant is sure Kirk
is safe in the apartment with the nanny, and a cop guarding the door.

Justine smugly describes how quickly she overcame all those obstacles and
spirited Kirk out the door. I quite cherish him, she tells the horrified
Grant, he'll be fine, unless you and Ryan try to lock me up - in that
case, I'd have to take him far, far away, someplace where you'd never find
us - now, do we understand each other? When it sinks in that Justine
really has Kirk, Grant tries to call Ryan in a panic. Never underestimate
me, darling, she says coldly, it's a very fatal mistake. Then she walks
out the front door. Grant drops the phone and rushes out after her, but
she's disappeared. Mother! he screams into the darkness, Motherrrrrrrrr!

FREEZE FRAME.

As ever,
