CHERCHEZ LA FEMME
Jake/Paulina/Matt/Irene/Ticket Agent

Jake, guessing that Paulina is flying to Capri, shows up at the
airport and bribes the ticket agent into booking him into the adjoining
seat on her flight, which has been delayed. Meanwhile, Paulina has
switched tickets with someone going to Reno, and is nervously sitting on
that plane, about ready to take off. While Jake is waiting for the Rome
flight, he overhears Irene on the pay phone, telling her friend about
switching her Reno ticket for a Capri vacation package from a nice young
lady. Jake interrupts and bribes Irene into describing the young lady.

Realizing it was Paulina, Jake tells the ticket agent he wants to switch
to the Reno flight. It's taking off right now, she says, how fast can you
run. She tries to explain their hourly flights, but he can't wait, and
takes off running toward the plane.

Later, Paulina phones Matt from the air. She reaches him on his cell
phone at the hospital, where he has a news crew covering the Bay City heat
crisis. She apologizes for not being on the job, but asks him to go to
her house, get her marriage certificate, and send it Overnight to her
hotel - she's on her way to Reno to get a divorce. Matt's delighted, she
can finally be rid of Jake and start a life with Joe - but Paulina doesn't
want to hear his name or think about anything of the sort right now. Matt
agrees to do as she asks.

Still later, in Reno, Paulina appears to be at a diner, emptying
quarters into a slot machine. She runs out of change and asks the manager
for more, saying she feels lucky. As she returns to the machines, Jake
enters - in drag [apparently he picked up a Tootsie outfit on the tarmac].

He cheers her on as she hits the jackpot - here's to freedom, she laughs
tensely. Indeedy-doo, cupcake, he says in a very phony falsetto - she
hesitates at the nickname, but still doesn't catch on. She offers her new
friend some of her quarters; they play the machines side by side, as Jake
tugs at his pantyhose.

WE'RE HAVIN' A HEAT WAVE...
Police Station - Joe/Gary/Josie/Ryan

The police station is abuzz with activity - there's a fire at the
waterfront in the building project, and a city-wide heat crisis. Joe
shows up and tells Gary that Jake sent him on a wild goose chase, and now
Paulina is missing. Gary says to chill out.

Meanwhile, Ryan calls home from his office and plays the message on
the machine. He's baffled to hear Vicky's voice saying if anything
happens she wants Grant to have custody of Kirk, and for Ryan to steer
clear. Josie, wearing plainclothes, goes to Ryan and asks if she's being
put on the vice squad. Ryan says slow down, she doesn't have enough
experience yet. Josie thinks Gary torpedoed her, but Ryan says no, I
actually make my own decisions. He assigns her to go to Vicky's house,
get the answering machine tape from Bridget and bring it to the lab to be
analyzed. Disappointed, she runs into Gary, and lets him think Ryan put
her on a secret undercover assignment. She exits.

Joe returns, and Gary tells him he thinks Jake is pulling another
scam on Joe, Paulina is probably hiding from Jake. Then why hasn't she
called me, Joe frets. Then a woman shows up at the station with a baby
suffering from the heat. Gary advises her to go to the hospital, and Joe
volunteers to drive her. They exit.

Josie returns to report back to Ryan. Gary interrupts to ask why
Ryan put Josie undercover, and Josie admits she made it up to get his
goat. Ryan tells them both to shut up, they're giving his headache a
headache, he hasn't made the decision yet. Josie reports that the lab
results on the tape will take an hour or two, she'll keep him posted. He
says he's dropping by the hospital, the waterfront fire seems to be
spreading. He exits [see below].

...A TROPICAL HEAT WAVE...
Bay City General - Morgan/John/Matt/Ryan/Joe/Laurie/Courtney/Bridget

Morgan and John have their hands full dealing with an influx of heat
victims, mostly seniors and kids who don't have access to A/C. Matt,
covering the crisis for KBAY, tries to talk to John about coverage of heat
and fire victims, but John's too busy to deal with a camera crew right
now. How about a Public Service Announcement? Matt tries to suggest, but
John has already stormed away.

Ryan arrives at the chaotic hospital and offers to help. John asks
if he can get them an air-conditioned van for waiting patients. Done,
says Ryan, to John's delight. Ryan then asks Morgan about Rachel's
missing clothes. No word, probably lost, says Morgan. But Ryan starts to
suspect Justine.

Joe arrives with the mother and baby; as Morgan takes care of them,
Matt comes up and tells Joe about Paulina's call - she's divorcing Jake,
so obviously she loves you, he chortles. They exit - Matt for Paulina's
house to get the marriage certificate, and Joe for the station [see
below].

Laurie arrives with her son Ben, who's having an asthma attack.

Courtney hustles him into an examining room. She stabilizes him with an
epinephrine [sp?] injection, and is about to write it on his chart when a
nurse tells her she has an urgent call from someone named Andrew. She's
really swamped, but it appears to be a personal crisis so she goes to the
nurses' station and takes it. Meanwhile, Morgan checks in on the kid.

Laurie interprets his concern as an attack on her mothering abilities, but
they realize the heat is making everyone super-edgy. He exits and runs
into Courtney, who's just been chewed out by John for taking a personal
call when they're so busy. Morgan says don't worry, you're doing fine,
nice job with the asthma kid.

Ryan, still at the hospital, grabs the phone at the nurses' station
and calls Bridget, who's gasping with the heat. She reports she's worried
about Vicky after hearing the tape, which Josie just picked up. She
admits she and Kirk are restless because of the heat, the power outages
have conked out their A/C. Ryan says he'll drop by later to check on
them. After they hang up, Bridget tries to rise, but collapses back into
her chair.

Later, Laurie emerges from the examining room and tells Morgan she
and Ben have been waiting forever. Morgan tells her to get a drink of
water while he checks on the kid. Ben looks better, and Morgan wants to
release him, but asks the nurse if he's had his shot of epinephrine [sp?].

She doesn't know, it's Courtney's case. There's no notation on the chart,
so Morgan unknowingly orders another dose. Just then the lights flicker
and the hospital goes dark. As patients shriek in panic, John orders
someone to check on the backup generator. A nurse tells him they have a
cardiac arrest coming in, and John tells her to assemble the emergency
team.

BACK AT THE STATION
Josie/Gary/Ryan/Joe/Bridget

Josie is back in street clothes, checking in at Ryan's office before
she leaves. Gary is there, and hints that the hospital could use some
volunteers to help handle the backup. She agrees to chip in, then
apologizes for dissing him earlier but she really wants the undercover
assignment. Gary repeats that he doesn't think she's ready yet. Ryan
enters and Gary exits. Josie gives Ryan the lab report on the tape, which
suggests it wasn't a live message, it was from a tape, probably spliced.

I knew it! exclaims Ryan, rushing out.

Joe returns and tells Gary about Matt's news, that Paulina's on her
way to Reno to divorce Jake. Joe's afraid maybe she hates them both, but
Gary reassures him she's probably ditching Jake so she can marry Joe. Ya
think? Joe grins happily.

Ryan arrives home looking for Bridget. He hears Kirk crying from
upstairs, and finds Bridget lying unconscious on the floor, as the lights
flicker.

HUNTINGTON HOUSE [JUSTINE'S WORLD]
Justine, Vicky, Grant

Justine returns to the wine cellar where Vicky is chained, to tell
her she's set in motion her plan to get Kirk, by sending Vicky's doctored
message to Ryan. Vicky pretends to be asleep. Justine comes near enough
for Vicky to leap up and grab her, slamming Justine against the wall of
the alcove. As Justine is briefly dazed, Vicky grabs the ring of keys and
tries to release her ankle restraint. Justine recovers and attacks Vicky,
slamming her against the other wall. She throws a bucket of water in
Vicky's face, and snarls that she has a surprise for Vicky concerning
Kirk. As Vicky goes ballistic, Justine nurses a cut lip from their
struggle, taunting Vicky about doctoring her tape - don't worry about Kirk,
I'll take care of him just fine, she sneers. She exits. Left alone,
Vicky works on filing down the spoon she found earlier into some sort of
tool or weapon, and vows to be ready for Justine next time.

Meanwhile, Justine is upstairs assembling a stash of masonry tools
into a workman's satchel. She starts to head back to Vicky, when Grant
arrives. She puts down the satchel and greets him warmly, glowing when he
calls her Mother. He notes her cut lip and asks about it with concern. I
can't lie to you, she coos, sitting down with him: I'm afraid I've done
something terrible. She hesitates, and he reassures her she can trust
him. She "confesses" that she loses control when she gets upset, like
when she thinks about what Spence did to her. Grant sympathizes, says
there's nothing wrong with screaming and throwing things, everyone gets
sad and angry. But Justine says she can't control it like other people -
she bit her lip when she fell - er, uh, THREW herself against the wall.

Grant, concerned, tries to show her a brochure for a care facility, no
restrictions or drugs, just the therapy she needs. Justine: "I'm not sick
- I'm merely having a bad day." All she needs, she tells him, is for him
to move in here with her permanently, so she can try to make up for their
lost years. [She forgets to mention Vicky in the cellar...] She pours
them some iced tea, remarking how cool the house is in spite of the heat
wave. Grant says he doesn't think their being "roomies" is such a good
idea. Nonsense, she says, I'm talking about a family compound, nothing
unusual about that. Then Grant drops the bombshell that Ryan wants to
arrest her. She drops her glass in terror, why would he want to do this
to his own mother, it's because he doesn't remember me, he has no feelings
for me like you do. Grant says he'll protect her, that's why he brought
the brochure, but he doesn't have the connections to work like he used to.

Justine tells him about the scrapbook she kept of his news clippings. He
imagines she would have been proud of some of his accomplishments as a
Senator, but those days are over for good. No, says Justine, I can help
you get it all back, and your son as well. He again urges her to read the
brochure and consider the treatment facility, just as a temporary measure
to get them through this transition. He says he has to go; as she sees
him to the door, she picks up the satchel, and he asks about it. Just
some busy work to keep me occupied until you return, she answers evasively.

She embraces him and says everything she does is for him, he must believe
she's the one person who loves and supports him without judging him. He
returns her embrace and exits, and she picks up the satchel and heads back
to the cellar.

As the cellar door rattles, Vicky hides the spoon she's been filing.

Justine enters in work clothes, pushing a wheelbarrow. As Vicky watches
dumbfounded, Justine pulls out a tape measure, measures the opening of
Vicky's alcove, then pours a bag of concrete into the wheelbarrow. With a
little wave at Vicky, she exits with the bucket to refill it with water.

She returns, pours the water into the wheelbarrow, and mixes up the
concrete. With references to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Casque of
Amontillado," she reveals to Vicky her intention to get her revenge on her
enemies. Following the plot of her favorite story, she begins to lay the
bricks to wall up Vicky in the alcove! FREEZE FRAME.

[Yikes! They had that Poe story a while back on PBS, very creepy - and

typical Justine...]
