THE VERDICT!!!...Dueling Surprises...The Search

Jake/Paulina/Lorna

Jake and Paulina are making out in their living room. They
tease each other about their respective surprises, then she
has to leave to do some fine-tuning on hers. After she's
gone, Jake calls Lorna out of her hiding place in the
laundry room. He opens his briefcase and tells Lorna they
have a lot of work to do. Lorna tells Jake he's heading for
trouble - people will think he's a weasel for using his
wife's money to publish his book. He maintains he tried to
reject her money, it caused a big fight; and Amanda reminded
him that's what split up her and Sam, way before Evan showed
up. Lorna scoffs at taking advice from Amanda, but Jake
convinces her that he & Paulina know the truth, so they
don't care what people think. Then he tells her he wants to
get his book published by Christmas. Lorna says he's crazy,
no way. Why not, says Jake, Cory is getting Felicia's book
out by Christmas. But Cory has a network and resources,
retorts Lorna: they have typesetters, copy editors, book
binders, distributors, marketing, advertising, etc. - not to
mention legal issues he probably hasn't even thought of.
Jake is way ahead of her - he hands her a stack of releases
he's gotten for all the letters he's using; he follows that
up with contracts and letters of agreement with
distributors, typesetters - even one to hire Lorna. Lorna
wonders if he should o.k. all this with Amanda, it's her
money. Jake then produces one final contract, stipulating
that Paulina gets repaid off the top, he doesn't get a cent
until she gets all her money back. Lorna: "Jake, I'm
impressed - no, I'm shocked!" Jake: "It's what I live for."
Lorna gets all charged up with their plans for publication.
Then Jake hands her his checkbook - she goes ballistic at
the low balance. Not to worry, he tells her, all those
checks will be good by tomorrow, once I tell Paulina I'm
accepting her investment offer. They'd better be, she warns
him, or your reputation is toast. Then she has to leave for
the airport; she tells Jake, if Evan asks tell him I'm on
another project.

Marshall/Judy/Felicia/Paulina

Marshall is at the Community Center, all sweaty, wearing
jeans and a t-shirt. Judy enters and thanks him for
coaching the kids' basketball team. As they straighten up
the room together, she expresses concern that the Center is
running out of funds, but thanks to his help in writing a
grant proposal, maybe they can get the money they need to
stay open. He tells her he has bad news, he just found out
their request was turned down. This hits her hard, and
she's so crushed she starts to lose it. Marshall puts his
arms around her, just as Felicia enters. She starts to
apologize for interrupting, but they welcome her and explain
their situation. Felicia is surprised that Marshall has
been working at the Center. She tries to help them think of
other possible funding sources, just as a group of women
come in bringing their kids to daycare. Judy dreads having
to tell them they have to quit their jobs because she can't
watch their kids anymore. Felicia readily offers to write
her a check, but Judy won't hear of it, she's already doing
enough by donating food. Paulina enters and picks up the
gist of their conversation.

Later, they all sit around the table. Marshall has changed
back into his business suit, and he's showing Paulina the
Center budget. She says if Marshall says it's accurate,
that's good enough for her. She signs a document that puts
all her money in a charitable trust for the Center. Judy is
overwhelmed. Marshall asks what if Paulina needs the money
later. She answers that she has lots of family and friends
if she needs help, and in a pinch she and Jake can always
come to the Center for Judy's chili. Marshall tells Felicia
they'd better get going if they want to make their flight to
Chicago for the Romance Novel Festival. Felicia grabs a
quiet word with Judy about The Program - she knows she can
find an A.A. meeting in Chicago, but she's nervous about
being away from her regular group. Judy reassures her, and
Felicia promises to call whether she needs to or not.
Felicia and Marshall leave, and Judy sends Paulina to help
with the children. Paulina is delighted, now having a
personal stake.

Jake/Paulina

Later, Jake is dressed in black tie, and has elegant
decorations and champagne ready when Paulina shows up. She
is wearing a sexy yet elegant black dress, low-cut with
sheer lace sleeves - they both look great. Jake pours
champagne, and they toast to each other's surprises. "Guess
what I did," they say together excitedly.

Carl/Ryan

Carl arrives at Vicky's house, where Ryan has been living
but is now packing to move out. He presents Ryan with the
piece of paper he swiped from Donna's desk, which he
believes has the imprint of Vicky's phone number, maybe they
can track her down. Ryan grabs a pencil and begins to rub
it on the paper to bring out the numbers - 212 area code,
that's New York. Carl snatches back the paper, and demands
Ryan decide if he really wants Vicky back, or is he through
with her as he's been claiming lately. He says he's turned
his life upside down looking for her, but she hasn't given
him any encouragement. Carl wonders if he's angry enough to
give up, or does he still love her enough to try this last
clue. Ryan decides to go for it, and takes the paper back.
Not much to go on, says Ryan, but it's more than I had when
I chased her to Canada. I remember, says Carl, and they
share an ironic smile. Although they can't make out the
whole note, they decide it looks like "Something-ton Hotel."
Carl picks up the phone to call the N.Y. tourist bureau for
names of hotels. Don't bother, says Ryan, she wouldn't use
her own name, I'd better go in person. He grabs a photo of
Vicky to show around, and stuffs some clothes in a zipper
bag. Carl offers the use of the Cory jet. Thanks, Dad,
says Ryan, and he dashes out the door. Carl is delighted at
getting Ryan out of town - he throws a "thank-you" toward
heaven, and remarks with a grin that he couldn't have
planned it better himself.

At the airport, Ryan runs into Donna with Steven, who she
says has been with Jamie but Jamie's at a conference in
Boston so she volunteered to have Steven visit her for a few
days - but she's obviously hiding something. Ryan says he's
on his way to visit Kelsey in Boston, maybe he'll look up
Jamie, but Donna quickly says Jamie'll be too busy. She has
Ryan watch Steven while she goes to get his suitcase.
Steven happens mention his mom, and at Ryan's questions he
reveals that he was just with Vicky in Central Park
yesterday. Donna returns and takes Steven home. Lorna
arrives, and tells Ryan she's headed for Chicago for
Felicia's convention. Ryan says he's heading on a fishing
expedition. Catch a big one, she tells him. Oh, yeah, he
answers, I intend to. Later, we see him on the plane. As
he looks at Vicky's picture, he flashes back to their
seaside reunion, and vows to find her and settle things.

Iris/Evan/Trent/Dana/Rachel/Donna/Carl

Dana is summing up her case against Iris, saying Iris made
up this "mystery man" who was supposedly behind Barry. Iris
flashes back to Barry's deathbed statement to Ryan, and
realizes Barry wasn't saying "Heaven" as everyone assumed -
he was saying "Evan." Donna enters, stopping by for a few
minutes before she heads for the airport. She sits in back
with Rachel. Iris makes some sound, and the judge asks
what's wrong. She insists on approaching the bench, saying
she finally figured out who the mastermind was. As she and
Dana approach the judge, Evan looks concerned. Iris begs
for more time to explain her new evidence, but Dana objects
to the stall.  Donna asks Rachel if Iris has lost her mind;
Rachel says that happened years ago. Evan tells Trent to go
up and find out what Iris is saying. Trent approaches and
offers to give Iris legal advice, but Iris tells the judge
to get rid of the slime. As he slinks back to his seat,
Iris mutters that she won't let him get away with it, and
she tells the judge and Dana that Trent is part of the
conspiracy against her. The judge thinks Iris's charge
against her own former lawyer is ridiculous, and Iris tries
to tell him Trent wasn't alone, his accomplice is in the
courtroom. She pleads that 10 years of her life is at
stake, and begs for a chance to defend herself. You had
your chance, he says, wait for the verdict and then you can
appeal. He warns her to pipe down or she'll be charged with
contempt, and watch the rest of the proceedings on closed
circuit TV from a holding cell. Rachel wonders what Iris is
going on about, but Donna says she can't wait around to find
out, and she exits. Trent and Evan gloat, although Trent
says they should find out what Iris knows. Iris continues
to mouth off, and the judge has her hauled away. As she
leaves, she glares at Evan.

Later, down in the holding cell, Iris demands that the guard
let her see the judge. There he is, says the guard,
pointing to the TV monitor. The judge's voice is heard
charging the jury, but Iris doesn't watch. Instead, she
flashes back over all the times Evan snowed her while
pretending to help - planting the bug, bringing in Trent,
etc. She always thought he was after Amanda, but she can't
see the connection to Carl. She kicks herself for being so
gullible, and for teaching Evan all he knows about business
strategy. This should never have happened, she cries.
You're right, says Evan, who has come visiting her cell. He
encourages her to confide in him about what she said to the
judge - "If anyone can get you out of this jam, it's me."
Iris keeps hearing Barry's voice in her mind: "H-Evan, H-
Evan, H-Evan..." She tells him she had a sort of epiphany
about the man who "framed" her - no pun intended, Mr. Frame,
she says. She lets him play the concerned friend as she
describes the cunning, the access, and the character of
whoever set her up - If I didn't know better, I'd say it
sounds a lot like you, she says. Evan pretends to take
offense, but he's not really trying too hard to maintain a
sincere tone of voice. Finally she slams into the bars
trying to get at his throat, screaming that she knows it was
him, he set her up, but he won't get away with it, by
tomorrow they'll have traded places. He avoids her grasp
and continues to deny everything, suggesting maybe it was
Carl. No, says Iris, I'm convinced now that Carl would
never put Rachel in danger. She wonders if Evan is out for
Rachel's blood because she killed his mother, and how that
connects to his campaign to get back in Amanda's bed.
Sorry, gotta go, he says, but take my advice: Go easy on
the wild accusations, or the judge might send you to the
funny farm.

Carl arrives during the jury deliberations, and meets Rachel
in the corridor. He's not surprised that Iris was jailed
for contempt, but Rachel isn't gloating. Carl reports that
he got Ryan out of town, now he can pursue his search for
their enemy without worrying about his son. Rachel urges
him to get the police involved, but Carl ignores the idea.
Meanwhile, Evan and Trent also meet in the corridor. Evan
tells Trent that Iris has figured out everything. Trent
thinks it's time to skip town, before Iris talks. Evan
assures him she can't prove anything, people will think
she's crazy - and he doesn't want to leave before the end of
the movie. But everyone hates you, Trent warns, they just
might believe Iris.

The jury returns, and Iris is led back to her seat to hear
the verdict. Carl and Rachel watch anxiously. The jury
finds Iris guilty of all charges. She collapses in her
chair with shock, but the judge makes her stand to hear the
sentence - 15 years in the women's prison, to begin
immediately, bail is revoked - bailiff, take her away.
Before they can get to her, she makes a dive for Carl, who
has gotten up to leave. She grabs onto his coat and begs
him to listen to her, your life is still in danger, he'll
get you for sure now, I'm the only one who knows the truth.
Carl struggles to free himself, and the bailiff tries to
restrain Iris - as Evan watches over her shoulder. FREEZE
FRAME.

[We always knew Iris knew how to make an entrance - but she
sure knows how to make an exit, too! Boy, will she ever
miss be missed!]
