Here is the update for Another World for Friday, August 22, 1997 - only
two major stories: the Bay City Girl-Cop Rapist Case, and Lila's latest
Grant-inspired scheme to hang on to Shane.

* Toni begins to have doubts; Rayburn looks increasingly furtive
* Sofia begs Emily to do the right thing
* Jake and Vicky blissfully enjoy free trip to San Dominica (from "Donna")
* Lila swings into "manipulation mode" to set up Vicky and Shane

SWEET DREAMS, PRETTY LADY

Burrell House [whatever happened to Judy?] - Toni is sacked out on
the couch, while Chris and Etta Mae worry how to help her get past her
trauma. Toni dreams about the assault - in her dream, her unseen
assailant growls "Act like a lady" as he's attacking her, then suddenly
Nick's voice asks "Hey, you o.k.?" Toni wakes up with a start, telling
Chris that something's really wrong. She tells E-M and Chris about her
recurring nightmare. It sounds a lot like her assault, but there were 2
voices - one was hateful, the other was worried about her. Chris guesses
that the second voice is her subconscious, trying to restore some balance
by showing her that the evil in the world is balanced by good. She hugs
Chris, grateful that he and E-M are here to help her through her ordeal.
We always will be, pretty lady, Chris tells her. She looks startled,
telling them her assailant in the dream called her "lady," too. [see
below]

LET THE "CHIP"S FALL WHERE THEY MAY (sorry - somebody had to say it)

Carlinos - Stellar Officer Chip Rayburn gallantly holds the door open
for Cadet Lewis, commenting about a gentleman holding the door open for a
LADY [get the connection??????]. A lady can do doors herself these days,
Lewis tells him a little condescendingly (if she only knew...). She
takes a seat and Rayburn goes to the counter. Meanwhile, Joe tries to
talk Sofia into letting go of Nick and getting on with her life, like
coming back to work at the restaurant. She makes it clear she hasn't
given up on Nick. Joe seems to accept this, so she agrees to resume her
job. Joe then greets Lewis at her table; she says she's about to go
through some mug books to try to identify the stalker who was following
her on the docks. Rayburn, waiting at the counter for a take-out order,
eavesdrops intently. Joe offers to walk back to the station with him. On
the way, Joe informs Rayburn he's being assigned a new partner, not
another rookie but a streetwise veteran: Josie Sinclair. You'll like her,
she's tough, Joe assures him. Doesn't act like a lady, eh? Rayburn
comments to oblivious Joe.
Josie and Toni run into each other on their way in to work, and
Josie embraces Toni as a welcome and a show of support.
Later, as Rayburn carefully observes Toni from across the squad room,
Dana arrives to meet with Cass and welcomes Toni back to work. Tyrone
shows up and says Cass is busy working on Nick's appeal, so Ty is here in
his place to discuss the second rape charge. Dana informs him the D.A.
will offer Nick a concurrent sentence if he'll plead guilty, no messy
trial and no extra jail time. For some unknown reason, Nick is led
through the room, and Toni flashes back to the nasty voice calling her
"lady." She looks upset, but assures Ty she's o.k. He tells Dana he'll
take her offer to his client, but her case is shaky in the second rape,
they can prove Nick's innocence.
Ty meets with a very edgy Nick in an interview room, and informs him
of the D.A.'s offer, it's Nick's choice. Nick refuses to plead guilty to
something he didn't do, 40 years or 20 doesn't really seem to make any
difference at the moment. Ty assures Nick he has a good chance of being
cleared of the second rape. He says Cass is combing through the record of
the first trial as we speak, looking for grounds for appeal, but what they
really need is new evidence.

Afterwards, Ty shows up at Etta Mae's door and begs her to give him a
chance to explain his actions, you're the only family I have. She makes
it clear she feels betrayed by his decision to defend Toni's rapist in
court, and emotionally asks him not to come around her house anymore. She
walks away from the door; Chris stops Tyrone from entering and closes the
door in his face, then goes to comfort Etta Mae.

Back at the squad room, Josie warily approaches Toni about Nick and
the recent string of assaults, but Toni seems ready to listen now. Josie
shows her the file on an unsolved rape of a female bank guard six months
ago. The m.o. matches Toni's rape, as well as the B.C.U. security guard,
suggesting a pattern against women in uniform. Toni wasn't in uniform the
night she was raped - but the rapist could have known she was a cop. Nick
knew, notes Toni. But Nick was in custody when Cadet Lewis was stalked,
Josie points out - if Lewis's stalker was the same guy who committed any
of these other attacks, we still have a rapist on the loose, and it's not
Nick. Rayburn eavesdrops with interest. Josie and Toni go over the
file on the second rape victim. They note the photo of the imprint of the
rapist's belt buckle on her thigh, and agree there's something vaguely
familiar about it. Meanwhile, in the locker room, Rayburn slips a belt
with a distinctive buckle into an empty Carlinos sack, and carries it back
into the squad room (looking so furtive, it's a wonder they don't arrest
him on "suspicion of looking suspicious"). (see below)

EMILY'S CHOICE

Carlinos - Tom'as is waiting when Emily arrives, suspicious of his
cryptic summons. He calls Sofia out of the kitchen to join them, and
demands that they settle the tension between them so they can all continue
to share their apartment in peace. Sofia offers to move out, I can't live
with someone who thinks my boyfriend is a rapist. Fine, I can't live with
someone who thinks he isn't, retorts Emily. Tom'as insists they talk it
out, he'll referee. Sofia starts by accusing Emily of hiding Nick's note
and lying to the cops that she didn't hear Nick knocking that night when
she really did, just to keep Nick from having an alibi for the second
rape. Emily angrily denies it, calling Sofia crazy and desperate to dream
up something like that. Tom'as can't see Nick as a rapist, although he's
ticked off at Nick for some of his other stunts - like trying to get
Tom'as to take the Spanish placement test for him, not bothering to
mention he wasn't really Tom'as's med school benefactor... Sofia admits
Nick has treated them all badly in the past, but that doesn't mean he
deserves to be in prison for 20 years. She insists Nick isn't guilty of
rape, and Emily knows she can give him a solid alibi for the second
assault. Get off my back - and get a life, Emily shouts at her, storming
out.
Later, Sofia steps out behind Carlinos to the dumpster to throw out a
bag of garbage. On her way back, she spots Rayburn and Josie leading Nick
out of the station house. Their eyes meet, and they mouth "I love you" to
each other across the square. Rayburn takes the opportunity to casually
pass by the dumpster and stuff his Carlinos sack underneath the garbage
bag Sofia has just left. Then he returns to Josie and Nick, and makes a
crack about "let's get this garbage back to the can," stuffing Nick in the
back seat of the waiting squad car to return him to prison.
Back in the squad room, Toni eyes Joe's office door expectantly.
Shortly, Emily emerges; Joe thanks her for coming by, the D.A.'s office
will contact you, and she exits. Joe starts toward Toni, looking like he
wants to say something, then changes his mind and returns to his office,
shutting the door behind him. Toni looks thoughtful.

CARIBBEAN CON ARTISTE

San Dominica - On the flight down, Jake and Vicky talk about Donna's
generosity in giving them this surprise vacation. Gee, wonder if we'll
run into Shane and Lila getting their divorce, they muse. [Not really.]
Vicky's a little hurt that her sons were so wrapped up in their own summer
activities they didn't want to come to San Dominica with their mom and
step-dad-to-be, but she's also proud of how well-adjusted they seem
despite their tumultuous lives. Vicky and Jake vow to make their marriage
work, for the boys as well as for themselves.

Meanwhile, at the hotel in S.D., Shane has spent the night on the
couch in the lobby so as not to violate the "cohabitation clause" in the
separation agreement. Lila comes down in the morning with a cup of coffee
for him, and sends him up to the room to shower and change. He says they
have to wait until tomorrow to see the magistrate to get their divorce;
she suggests they use the time to relax and have some fun. After he
exits, Lila turns on the Southern charm and tears, and begs Ramon, the
concierge, for his help - Jake and Vicky will be arriving soon, they're
about to break my heart, she sniffs. She claims that Jake is her husband,
Vicky is yet another of her husband's infidelities, and Shane is her
private investigator who needs to be able to hide in Jake and Vicky's room
to catch them in a compromising position [where does she get this stuff??]
- what room will they be staying in? The gullible and slightly drunk
Ramon buys every word of this fairy tale. He stops short of ushering
Shane to an inconspicuous corner of their room, but feels sorry for her;
he does volunteer that they'll be in Room 107. Lila talks him into
getting her a rum cocktail. He leaves the front desk unattended, and Lila
takes the opportunity to sneak around the counter and swipe one of the
keys to 107. Shane returns, and she hands him the key and tells him the
hotel found an extra room for him after all [boy, she's good!]. He's glad
to be able to move to a bed rather than the couch, and they head upstairs
to move his stuff to the new room. Ramon just misses them as he returns
with the drink, Lila is long gone so he drinks it himself.
Later, Lila visits Shane in his new room and shows him something
she's kept - their lucky $2 bill, which they got in change on their
wedding night. He used it to help him get through his med school exams,
etc. She reminds him their marriage wasn't all bad, like dancing
together. He recalls he'd never liked dancing, until he met her; she'd
made it fun, she was a good dancer - but a lousy cook. Recounting one
particular cooking disaster makes him laugh out loud, and she suggests
maybe they can still be friends after the divorce. I'd like that, he
nods. She takes this as a signal to call room service and order 2 seafood
dinners and a pitcher of margaritas, maybe they can spend a relaxing
evening together laughing over old times as they await the end of their
marriage. He's wary but, lulled by the easing of tensions, he agrees.
Impatient for Jake and Vicky to arrive so she can put Grant's and her
plan into action, Lila returns to Ramon at the desk to ask if the last
flight has landed. He says yes, and offers to get her that drink she ran
out on before. She agrees, and he exits again. She spots Jake and Vicky
approaching, and ducks behind a post to eavesdrop. Ramon returns with the
drink - no Lila again, but Jake and Vicky meet him at the front desk to
register. He finds the reservation for Victoria Hudson, hands her the key
and icily wishes "Mr. Hudson" a pleasant stay for him and his "wife."
They seem puzzled by his attitude, but decide to ignore it and have a good
time. They ask him to have their bags sent to their room; Ramon curtly
recommends Jake and his "wife" wait in the lounge. They admit they aren't
married, yet, but will be soon. Ramon looks unimpressed. They exit to
the lounge, and Lila emerges from behing the post and returns to the desk.
Ramon sympathizes with her about how cheerfully Jake (the cad!) is
cheating on her - their luggage may just get lost. She thanks him for his
support, and exits. Vicky returns, just misses seeing Lila, and asks
Ramon to recommend a wildly romantic restaurant.
Apparently there was supposed to be another scene or a commercial
break here, because Lila is instantly beamed to Shane's room, where
they're in the middle of dinner and drinks. (She's fast, but not THAT
fast...) Shane suggests they call it an early evening and get some rest
before tomorrow; but they continue to drink margaritas and talk about some
of the happier memories of their marriage. Shane expresses gratitude for
her support during med school, he wouldn't be a doctor today if not for
her. She admits she was jealous of all the time he'd spent at the
hospital, and understands how her need to keep things the same was in
conflict with his need to move forward with his career - no wonder he
stopped loving her. He assures her they both made mistakes, but he really
did love her, and he's in awe of her determination to start a new life in
the face of their impending divorce.
Later, Shane and Lila sit on the floor getting sloshed on margaritas
and rehashing the wilder moments in their past, as music plays in the
background. Shane gets up woozily and helps Lila to her feet; standing so
close, they start to dance together. This leads to a kiss, which becomes
more and more passionate.
Still later, Ramon patrols the hallways, stopping by Room 107 to give
a disgusted tsk-tsk, then continuing on his way. Inside, Shane and Lila
are in bed together; he's asleep, but she caresses his chest with a
satisfied glow. About this time, Vicky and Jake arrive after a lovely,
romantic evening (something about him serenading her on the beach with
the entire score from "West Side Story"). They share a kiss or two, then
Jake produces the key and puts it in the lock. Fade to black...
