Here is the update for Another World for Friday, August 15, 1997, in
which:

* ...the Lila/Shane ballet continues
* ...Cindy gets suspicious of Lila and Grant
* ...Grant calls "spin doctor" [Can we talk?] to fix Cindy's situation
* ...Amanda agrees to help Donna and Carl [!?!]
* ...Tyrone switches sides in a courtroom surprise

THIS MARRIAGE IS OVER, DEAR

Carlinos - Shane makes it clear to Lila that Vicky's engagement to
Jake hasn't changed his mind about divorcing her. Shane wants to end
their marriage as soon as possible, so they can both get on with their
lives. He wants her to sign the papers, so he can fly down to San
Dominica and get a quickie divorce. That's cold, she pouts, saying her
therapist and Grant both advised her to take things slow. Shane warns her
not to trust Grant. Lila (toying with her pearl necklace) protests that
Grant has been her only friend, offering to handle her divorce for free.
Grant never does anything for free, Shane observes, he'll make you pay one
way or another, I'd hate to see you get hurt. She asks for some time to
think it over, and he agrees.

Grant's Suite - Grant is highly agitated to get the report from the
fertility clinic, that no way can Cindy EVER get pregnant, not even
artificially. He reminds her she HAS to be pregnant, it says so in the
newspaper story he planted! Sorry, nothing I can do about it, swears
Cindy. Grant calls Dunston, his publicist, to come over and figure out a
way to clean up the mess so it doesn't hurt his campaign. [Cute scene, if
totally predictable...] She rushes over, testy about being called away
from her life, this better be important - did you kill somebody else?
[Hee-hee! Good one, Dunston!] They explain the problem; Dunston is upset
they didn't tell her before she launched the big publicity blitz about
their baby. She tries stuffing a pillow up under Cindy's sweater, but
Cindy refuses to give birth to goosefeathers. Grant glares at Cindy,
suggesting he could always go for the sympathy vote - as a widower! (She
belts him with the pillow.) Dunston gets a sudden flash of brilliance
[well, brilliance is relative - she's no Frankie], and drags Grant out the
door by the lapel. [I think we can all guess what's coming, eh?]
We next see our dynamic duo at the hospital, cornering some poor
hapless doctor and steamrolling him into helping with a harmless little
scheme. He tries to protest, but they won't take no for an answer. Grant
promises to take care of the doc if anything happens to his career because
of this. You never said that, chides Dunston, we were never here, this
conversation never happened (wink-wink) - just be here in an hour. She
hustles Grant out.
Meanwhile, back at the Harrison Homestead, Cindy cools her heels.
She takes the opportunity to phone the local jeweler to complain about a
stone coming loose from her necklace. While she waits for the jeweler to
pull her records, she spots the fertility idol by the window. Scoffing at
its failure to ensure her pregnancy [probably something to do with a
cosmic sense of child welfare], she cheerfully bids it bye-bye and drops
it out the window to the sidewalk far below. The jeweler comes back on
and asks about the pearl necklace Grant bought last week. Puzzled, she
bluffs that the pearls are fine, I'll drop by in person to get the other
one repaired.
She hangs up, musing about what prompted Grant to buy her pearls, no
doubt he'll surprise her with them soon?  Lila comes by to see Grant;
Cindy sees her blatantly toying with her pearl necklace, and with feigned
cordiality invites her in to wait. She compliments her on her lovely
pearls - or should I compliment GRANT??? Lila acts shocked that she could
think such a thing [this woman is PATHOLOGICAL (i.e., she fits in
perfectly)!]. Cindy makes it clear, Grant ain't available [why she
doesn't just say "Go for it" is beyond me; sounds like a perfect out, as
long as Grant thinks he's hiding something from her!]. Lila laughs
fetchingly - he's my lawyer, he's always been a perfect gentleman. Grant
returns with Dunston; Dunston remarks how pale and sickly Cindy looks, we
need to get to a phone. Grant sends them to use the one in the bedroom,
while he talks with Lila. Lila tells him Cindy seemed cranky. Her
pregnancy, Grant explains. Then Lila reports Shane's idea of a quickie
divorce in the Caribbean. Perfect, smirks Grant, convince him to take you
along - anything can happen in a tropical paradise, even something that
could violate your separation agreement... Lila, in perfect sync, smiles
and exits. Grant summons Cindy back and shows her the fertility idol, I
found it on the sidewalk, he says accusingly. You know I have nothing to
do with that thing, she shudders with innocent disgust, now what's this
new scheme? Dunston returns, dabbing at her eyes with a hanky - I'm
afraid we have some very bad news for you, she sniffs sadly to Cindy...

Hospital - Tom'as runs into Emily, and suggests she might go over to
the courthouse to support Sofia. No way, Emily sneers, exiting. [see
below]
Lila visits Shane in his office at the hospital, and tells him her
lawyer advised her to cooperate with the divorce - but she wants to go
with him to San Dominica. I was there when our marriage began, and I want
to be there when it ends, she states logically [which should be a clue
something's wrong, eh?]. Besides, maybe we can part as friends and end
this tension. Shane agrees to make the arrangements, and she exits.
Suddenly, Dunston and Grant burst into the hospital, holding up a
writhing, moaning Cindy between them. Tom'as tries to help, but Grant
fends him off, crying frantically that his wife could be losing her baby.
Their doctor "friend" rushes Cindy and Grant into an examining room, and
Dunston blocks the door to keep Tom'as out.

WHO'S ON TRIAL HERE?

Courtroom - Chris is dismayed to see Jake enter and sit on Nick's
side. Toni and Etta Mae are equally upset when Tyrone enters and sits
with Cass at the defense table. The judge enters the sweltering
courtroom, and asks Cass for his next witness. Cass surprises everyone
(including Tyrone) by announcing that Tyrone has joined the defense team
and will be questioning the next witness - Nick. [Wasn't Cass supposed to
question Sofia on redirect, to clarify some of her testimony?] Before they
can start, the judge gets a note and calls a brief recess to deal with a
problem.
After she leaves, Ty protests to Cass that he can't question Nick,
despite their discussion last night about Nick's innocence. He suspects
Cass of trying to play to the minority jurors. Cass admits he hopes
Tyrone on the team can help defuse the race issue, especially since he
doesn't think Nick is guilty. They retreat to the hallway to talk, as
Chris, Toni and E-M glare at Ty. [see below]

During the break, Jake tells Donna that Vicky's out using the phone
[apparently for the rest of the day - we never see her]. Donna remarks
that Jake's not good enough for Vicky, but Donna will support Vicky's
decision. She insists on helping with their wedding plans after the trial
is over, despite the demands of her mayoral campaign. Speaking of
which, a process server tracks her down and hands her a subpoena. Donna
is livid as she skims it; she tells Jake to make her excuses, and dashes
out.
We follow Donna to the Cory mansion, where she shows the subpoena to
Carl. She swears that Rusty's accusation of sexual harassment is a
complete lie, designed to torpedo her campaign. Amanda overhears and
makes a crack about Donna's relationship with young Matt; that has nothing
to do with these trumped-up charges, Donna protests. Carl asks Amanda to
leave, but she informs them the news of the lawsuit has already been
leaked to the Herald by an anonymous tip. She predicts Donna's case will
take over the headlines as soon as Nick's trial is over. Carl again
advises Amanda to leave, until she can learn some manners, and she exits.
Carl suspects Grant is behind Rusty's charges - it's a little too
convenient, and Gary had reported that Grant's main campaign strategy was
apparently to blackmail all his opponents into dropping out [messy, but
effective]. Donna agrees it's highly likely. Amanda returns with the
notes in Donna's handwriting, addressed to Rusty, which the Herald had
received, that Donna had signed "Love & Kisses, XOXOXO." I sign all my
notes that way, it's a figure of speech, protests Donna. Oh, Bella, sighs
Carl... She admits she wrote the notes, but they were just about work.
Carl guesses Rusty was instructed to hold onto all the notes. By Grant?
Amanda asks. Doesn't it sound like him? Carl suggests, and Amanda has to
agree. [Note: Grant's reputation is too sleazy for him to hide his
connection to dirty deeds anymore - but he always gets away with it, so it
doesn't really matter.] Donna begs her not to publish the story, but Carl
disagrees - it's news, you have to print it, but you can make it sound
like the charges are suspicious. Amanda admits she doesn't want to see
Grant elected mayor, nor does she want Grant using the Herald as a pawn.
She agrees to run the story as Carl asked - for the good of the family,
she smiles [What's her game now?], and exits. Remember, you're innocent,
Carl comforts Donna. But is being innocent enough? Donna wonders, as we
return to the courtroom...

TYRONE FOR THE DEFENSE

Still in recess, Nick tells Sofia he's eager to take the stand and
tell his side. He's also worried about the second rape charge. He says
the note he left Sofia that night would have given him an alibi, and
wonders if Emily could hate him enough to have hidden the note from Sofia?
Sofia can't believe that, but urges Nick to have faith in himself as she
does, the jury will believe him.
Ty and Cass return, and Ty tries to explain to Toni and E-M what
happened earlier. Chris tries to intervene, and E-M can't believe he
could turn on them like this. Tyrone assures them Cass didn't pressure
him to turn traitor, that he hates hurting them - but, as a man and as a
lawyer, his commitment to the truth has to take priority. He hopes
they'll understand someday; but they just roll their eyes in disgust. He
rejoins Cass as the judge returns. Ty calls Nick to take the stand, and
questions him about the night of the rape. Sofia stews about the note
Nick says he left her the second night, which she never saw. She sneaks
out to go look for it, giving Nick a smile and a wave before she leaves.

We next see Sofia back at the apartment, where she confronts Emily
about finding Nick's note and throwing it out. Emily denies it, but Sofia
digs through some trash by the door and finds the note. Emily swears this
is the first she's seen it. It reads: "Sofia - It's 11:15, where are you,
I love you - Nick." Sofia excitedly dashes out with the note. Emily
scowls.

Back on the stand, Nick describes the argument with Sofia, falling
off the roof, trying to fight off Tom'as when he drove him to the
hospital; and his encounter with Toni at the hospital, where she told him
to stay away from Sofia. He admits he was angry, but denies he wanted to
hurt her, and swears he didn't rape her or anyone else. Jake and Mike
wonder to each other where Tyrone is going with this line of questioning,
bringing up Nick's anger at Toni. Dana objects every few questions, like
every time Ty tries to lead the jury to some conclusion about the
evidence; but Ty continues his questioning. Nick says, when he saw Toni
in the parking lot on the ground, he asked her, "What are you doing
there?" Ty: Now, why would the guy who just attacked her, ask her that?
Dana: Objection. Judge: Sustained. Ty suddenly tosses a pen at Nick -
Nick catches it in his left hand, demonstrating he's a lefty. Using Cass
as a "victim," Ty has Nick grab Cass from behind like an assault. Nick
uses his left arm, and Ty shows the jury the watch on Nick's left wrist.
Ty: The victim testified she scratched her attacker's arm, and saw a watch
on that wrist. Dana: Objection. Judge: Sustained, save it for summation.
Ty instructs Nick to raise his right sleeve, showing the scratches. No
watch, Ty points out. Dana: Objection, he could have switched his watch
for the trial. Ty produces 3 photos, claims they span a 6-year period
[any proof, Ty? Those photos notarized? HMMM?], showing Nick wearing his
watch on his left wrist - not a new habit, Ty concludes. He asks if Nick
carries condoms, the rapist wore one. No, I'm not currently sexually
active, Nick testifies. Ty: Would a rapist stop to buy condoms, or dig
through the victim's purse to look for one? Dana: Objection, calls for
speculation. Judge: Sustained, don't generalize. Ty next produces Nick's
medical records; Nick testifies he'd had a violent allergic reaction to
gin. Dana: Objection - relevance? The judge calls a sidebar and notes to
Ty that Toni had never said the liquor she smelled on the rapist was gin.
The other rape victim smelled gin, Ty points out. Dana: Irrelevant.
Judge: Sustained, move on. Ty questions Nick about the incident in high
school with Joanne. Nick swears he never tried to rape her - she was a
willing partner when they went downstairs at the party, she had ripped her
own blouse taking it off, but then she said she wasn't ready, they had no
protection, someone was outside the door, so they stopped. Sofia dashes
in and shows Cass the note, causing a stir. Cass asks for a recess for
some possible new evidence. The judge agrees.
Toni, E-M and Chris exit the courtroom, avoiding Jake in the lobby.
They puzzle over Tyrone's sudden switch to the defense. Chris wonders if
the Hudsons could have bought him off. E-M says no, he probably actually
believes he's doing the right thing. Chris reassures Toni, she has the
truth on her side.
Back inside, Cass tells Sofia the note is of little help unless they
can prove when it was written. Sofia wants to get Emily to admit she
heard Nick knocking that night and hid the note. Then it would help, says
Cass; but Tyrone points out that all evidence about the second rape has
been ruled inadmissible at this trial. The bailiff enters and summons
Cass and Tyrone to see the judge in chambers. They exit through the
lobby, as Toni, et al., glare at Ty.
Jake tries to talk to Chris, but Chris and the Burrells turn their
backs and walk away. Mike asks Jake about Ty's strategy with Nick,
spotlighting the tensions between Nick and Toni. Jake guesses it's to
defuse the issues before the prosecution can bring it up (which they
would), and slant it to sound even worse.
Ty and Cass find Dana already waiting with the judge in chambers.
They explain that the new evidence is an alibi to the second rape, which
the police believe was committed by the same attacker. The judge refuses
to admit anything referring to the second rape, this trial is about Toni's
attack and nothing else - now get on with it.
The trial resumes, and Ty questions Nick about his blackouts. He
admits his memory is fragmentary for that night, but he has no memory of
attacking Toni, and he doesn't believe he could ever do such a thing.
Your witness, Ty tells Dana.
Dana asks Nick about the fragments he remembers of that night.
Falling off the roof, going to the hospital, arguing with Toni - then
finding her in the parking lot, Nick recalls. But nothing in between,
Dana notes - under oath, can you swear you didn't attack her while you
were blacked out? After a long pause, he finally admits he can't be sure
- No further questions, Dana announces triumphantly - but I couldn't have,
Nick cries out. [Sounds like the way the defense snookered Toni, eh?] But
the damage has been done. It's over, Chris whispers to Toni, Nick just
hanged himself. Toni agrees. Then Ty rises and asks to recall a previous
witness: Toni Burrell. Tyrone stares at her resolutely, as she rises,
stunned, and glares daggers at him. Fade to black... [this would have
made a great freeze frame, oh mighty PTB]

Well, this is Vicky substituting for Dorothy; that should do it for
another week. As Tom Freeman would put it, "No rights reserved!"
