Boy, TPTB sure wasted no time dropping Frankie from the opening montage,

and now she's already gone from the closing credits as well. [I know

what you're saying - she's gone, get over it - but when you follow

someone's life for 7 years, day in and day out, they almost feel like

family.] We won't forget you, MFF1...

Here is the update for Another World for Friday, August 30, 1996:

*Raphael spooks Maggie into a rash decision
*Paulina tries to cook
*Bobby visits the emergency room
*Police spin their wheels, as Josie makes new (furry) friends

MAIL CALL
Maggie/Raphael/Nick

Cory Mansion - Maggie catches Raphael going through the Cory mail,
teases him about his petty crime - until he shows her the doctor bill from
her ER visit. She grabs for it, he (deja vu) plays keep-away, until Nick
enters and catches them. Maggie accuses Raphael of going through her
mail. Just teasing, says Raphael, besides, what's the big deal about a
doctor bill? Nick takes the bill from Raphael, and Maggie snatches it
away - not to worry, I'll pay it myself. Nick reminds her, Rachel
promised to pay her doctor bills, give it to Rachel. Raphael snatches it
back to put with the Cory mail. Nick has to get to work, but Maggie says
she wants to stay and visit with Rachel. Bad idea says Raphael - she's in
Chicago with Carl. Maggie makes another excuse to stay, and Nick leaves.

Raphael gloats; go look busy, trim some hedges, Maggie tells him. He
exits; Maggie eyes the stack of mail. Raphael returns and catches her
going through it, but she pretends she was looking for a magazine, and
retreats to the terrace. He pulls the bill from his pocket and holds it
over the lamp, trying to get a look at its contents, while Maggie paces
nervously. When the coast is clear, she makes a beeline for the mail, but
scurries to nibble at a muffin when she hears Raphael returning. No more
morning sickness? he fishes. She asks for the bill, so she can "check it
for errors." Too late, he says, I already messengered all the important
mail to Rachel's hotel in Chicago. She exits [see below]; he pulls the
bill out of his pocket again and studies the envelope.

SOMEONE'S IN THE KITCHEN WITH VICKY
Bobby/Vicky/Jake/Etta Mae

Bobby, working on Vicky's kitchen, takes off his overshirt. Vicky
brings in some dishes, tries to greet him casually without staring at his
muscles, and drops the cups in the sink. She reaches in for the broken
pieces, and he leaps to stop her, examining her hands to make sure she
wasn't cut; they both pull back awkwardly. Jake bursts in, crowing over
his latest headline, Chris's scoop about the cops solving the stalker
case. Vicky greets him, gives him a flower and a kiss for the previous
day's tribute to Frankie. Bobby glares from the kitchen; as he continues
working, Jake and Vicky sit and talk over the newspaper story, from
Chris's first-person account. Jake thinks it's great stuff, but Vicky
says Chris was lucky to survive his encounter with Fax - unlike all the
victims who died needlessly. It could have been you, Jake observes, you
wore the necklace for weeks. Why didn't the cops connect Blair and Fax
sooner, she laments. Meanwhile, Bobby has picked up the paper and started
scanning the story - you misspelled "hommicide," there's only one "m," he
digs. Jake makes a snide response and exits, back to work [see below].

Don't mind Jake, Vicky tells Bobby, he can't take criticism. He should
lighten up, Bobby observes. He exits to get something from his truck.

Etta Mae enters from the back yard, where she left the kids playing.

Vicky says she thinks Etta Mae is working out great as the kids'
caretaker, Bridget would be so pleased. E-M likes the house and thinks
the kids are a handful, Rachel probably spoiled them, but that's what
grandmothers are for. They agree the boys will benefit from this new
stability, home, boundaries. Bobby returns, and E-M chews him out for
just walking into a stranger's house without knocking. Oops, Vicky
apologizes, I thought you'd met. She introduces them, and Bobby goes back
to work. E-M wants to see the plans for the kitchen; you have the trash
compacter in the wrong place, she says, it should be next to the sink, not
the pantry. Fine, says Bobby testily [hmmm - someone ELSE can't take
criticism!], you two talk appliances. He rolls up the plans and exits.

Vicky shows E-M her choice of stove and refrigerator - you don't need all
that fancy stuff, E-M advises, just get simple, basic units, cheaper and
less maintenance. Suddenly they hear a yelp of pain; Vicky rushes over
as Bobby enters with blood gushing from his hand. Over his macho
protests, she insists on taking him to the hospital for stitches.

SITUATION WANTED: ITALIAN CHEF
Paulina/Joe

Paulina awakens Joe (after 2 hours of sleep - how rude!) with

breakfast in bed. She knows all the details about Fax, and he's annoyed

to learn she read it all in Jake's paper. He wants to go in to the

station, but she says Gabe ordered him to take the day off, and persuades

him to stay and mess around. Afterward they snuggle in bed, he tells her

how much he missed her while she was in Italy. She says she missed him

too, but felt lucky to spend time with his huge extended family, and to

keep busy with her cooking classes. She feels blessed now to be a part

of 2 wonderful families, the Corys and the Carlinos. They coo to each

other in Italian, and she covers his chest with kisses. Eventually Hoe

says he has to go, they're short-handed at Carlino's without their chef -

Sofia's not strong enough to be back full-time yet, even Gary is pitching

in. I need to turn a profit so I can pay Nick back the $50,000. Paulina

says they need a good chef who'll work cheap. You think a chef will just

fall into my lap? he retorts. Paulina throws herself across his lap. No

way! he says. Over his objections, she insists she wants to be a true

partner to him, she's now an ace at Italian cuisine, she'll bring Dante

to work with her, she can handle the grueling work... She starts to

leave; this isn't a done deal, he warns her. You don't want me to cook

at Carlino's, she counters, I'll go cook for some other restaurant! She

exits [see below].

IT'S NEWS TO ME
Jake/Chris/Matt/Nick/Joe/Maggie

At the Herald, Jake passes around champagne in paper cups and leads a
toast to the absent Chris on his great story. Chris shows up, bruised and
bandaged; he accepts the praise, and promises to take everyone to lunch on
the raise Jake and Matt will give him when he wins the Pulitzer. While
Jake is angling with Chris to share the credit so he can get Businessman
of the Year, Matt enters. Jake urges him to join the celebration; the
story's not over while Josie is still missing, Matt points out, crossing
to his office.

Later, Jake sees Nick at his terminal and asks how's married life.

Not as much fun as a root canal, Nick grumbles. Put yourself in Maggie's
shoes, advises Jake. I don't have the legs for it, Nick quips. Jake
gives Maggie credit for hanging in, even though the person she loves,
loves someone else. Nick insists he wants to be a good father, but he's
trapped in a phony marriage with no end in sight. It would be easier on
you if you could be friends with Maggie - not love, but at least try to
like her, counsels Jake. Joe strides in, and Jake retreats as Joe
confronts Nick and hands him a file. It contains a monthly repayment
schedule. Not necessary, says Nick, but Joe doesn't want to owe him
anything. Then Joe wonders where Nick got that kind of money? Nick
glances at Jake, who adopts an innocent look - nevermind, I don't want to
know, Joe decides. Was this Sofia's idea? Nick asks. No, it was my idea
- deal with it, Joe snaps, exiting [see below].

Some time later, Maggie dashes into the newsroom to see Nick. She
offers him a deal: I'm miserable in Bay City, if you'll take me away from
here, I promise I'll give you a nice, neat divorce as soon as the baby is
born!

SUPPORT GROUP MEETING: RELATIVES OF KIDNAP VICTIMS
Sharlene/Donna/Cass

Sharlene sits staring at the headlines. A knock at the door, she
hopes it's Josie, but it's Donna. Sharlene tells her it's not a good
time, but Donna says she heard Josie was missing, I came to stay with you
while you wait for news. Sharlene lets her in, apologizes for having
nothing to serve her, I rushed back when I heard about Frankie, haven't
had a chance to settle in yet. Donna assures her she needn't make a fuss,
but Sharlene insists on pouring her some coffee. This is awkward, admits
Donna, we've never had anything in common until now, but this has brought
back memories of how I felt when Vicky was missing and in danger. How did
you get through it, Sharlene asks dully. By believing in her strength,
says Donna - Josie is strong, not a victim-type, a skilled cop - and I
like to think Frankie's spirit is protecting her, guiding her home.

Sharlene hugs her gratefully, weeping on her shoulder, I really needed to
hear that right now. They discuss how hard it is to wait, sleepless
nights, terrible pictures running through your mind - you've given me a
glimmer of hope, thank you so much, says Sharlene, grasping Donna's hand.

Another knock at the door - it's Cass, he gives Sharlene a comforting hug,
then apologizes for interrupting her and Donna. We were just...bonding,
Donna smiles. They ask how he's doing; Trying to hang in, he answers,
the news of Frankie's killer's death wasn't nearly as satisfying as I'd
hoped. Sharlene wants to go to the police station and make them stop
putting her off, but she doesn't trust herself driving, and asks Cass for
a ride. Donna offers, but Cass says he has to do this, part of seeing it
through for himself. Walk us out, Sharlene invites Donna. They exit [see
below].

Meanwhile, Josie, half-conscious in the pit where Fax hid her, weakly
calls Gary's name, but doesn't move [see below].

EXCUSE ME - DOES THIS RESTAURANT SERVE FOOD?
Bobby/Vicky/Morgan/Donna/Paulina/Jake/Joe

     Morgan is on duty when Vicky brings Bobby to the emergency room;

Morgan sympathizes with a construction injury, and agrees he needs
stitches. Bobby tries to get his own doctor, Dr. Kessler; it's just
stitches, says Morgan, but if you prefer, I'll get Dr. Kessler - he's in
surgery, it could be a while... Vicky, averting her eyes from the blood,
urges him to trust Morgan, he's treated me and my kids for years. Fine,
Bobby says reluctantly, go ahead. Vicky feels squeamish and tells Bobby
she'll wait at Carlino's. As Morgan cleans Bobby's wound, he notices
scars on Bobby's arm, looks like burns. Another construction job, says
Bobby evasively. He winces as he gets stitched up.

At Carlino's, Vicky runs into Donna. Donna gushes about how
wonderful Michael was at the fundraiser last night, so elegant and
charming, he'd make a great chairman of the hospital board. You sound
like a schoolgirl with a crush, notes Vicky. Don't be silly, I'm totally
objective about Michael, it's the only way we can deal, she answers; then
she slyly observes that someone's here, looking for Vicky - she turns to
see Bobby standing in the doorway, his hand now bandaged. He greets them,
tells Vicky she was right about Morgan, I'll be fine in a couple of days,
now I'm hitching back to the house to get back to work. She doesn't want
him hitching rides, but he says he's used to it, his truck is always in
the shop. He exits, passing Paulina in the doorway. Paulina greets them
warmly, they welcome her home but she has no time to talk: I'm about to
make my debut as the new chef! She explains about her cooking classes,
Joe doesn't think I can cut it but I'm about to prove him wrong! You
should never argue with a woman who's got a carving set in her hand, quips
Donna. Paulina exits merrily into the kitchen; oh my god, Vicky mouths
silently - last I heard, she couldn't even boil an egg, she tells Donna
with astonishment. Jake bursts in triumphantly, ecstatic about their new
record circulation on this issue of the Herald. Vicky congratulates him
with a big bear hug (which Bobby observes glumly from outside).

In the kitchen, Paulina cranks up her walkman, pulls a knife from her
carving set, and confidently slices up a pepper. Then she puts a pot of
water on a burner and walks away, not noticing that she's knocked over a
large can of olive oil over the stove.

Joe enters the restaurant, greets Jake with a cordial handshake [I'm
not kidding...weird, huh?], and says he's just checking in before he goes
to the station. Suddenly he notices a strange smell, looks baffled - then
dashes toward the kitchen with alarm - Paulina!!!

THIS TOWN NEEDS A PSYCHIC...
Michael/John/Gabe/Gary/Sharlene/Cass/Josie

John's office - Mike and John pore over a city map, Josie could be
anywhere between the jewelry store and the trestle. John doesn't want to
hinder the cops, but they can't be everywhere. Mike says he'll spare no
expense to find her, and they head to the police station to see what they
can do.

Police station - Gary empties Josie's purse onto Gabe's desk, no clue
to her whereabouts. All the cops are searching the warehouses near the
jewelry store, says Gabe. Gary thinks the publicity in Jake's paper could
actually help this time.

Sharlene and Cass arrive, and Gary informs them no news yet, they're
getting court orders to search warehouses [too bad they can't ask Frankie,
eh?]. Sharlene explodes at him for letting Josie get into this mess; Gary
shouts back in equal anger and fear and frustration, I never wanted her
out there on her own. Cass helps Sharlene calm down, then goes to have a
word with Gabe while she apologizes to Gary, but Gary blames himself for
Josie's abduction. (Cut to Josie, still lying motionless in the pit,
coughing weakly.) Gary presses Sharlene for any helpful details Fax may
have let slip over lunch, but Sharlene confirms he was evasive about
himself: he claimed, if you can believe a word that creep said, that his
mother was deceased; his father was wealthy and intended to drop a bundle
on the hospital, but we never saw a dime; oh, and he said he liked living
in the woods, but wouldn't hunt or fish - he said he could never kill
another living creature, she says with bitter irony. John and Michael
barrel in and check with Sharlene, still no news. Mike says they're there
to put pressure on Gabe and lend their services. John gives her a
meaningful gaze and touches her arm supportively, then the brothers
descend on Gabe in his office.
Gabe tells John and Mike that he's getting search warrants for the
warehouses. What about the trestle area, Mike demands. I've had 2 units
there all night, Gabe assures them, but still not a trace of Josie. (Cut
to Josie, still lying motionless in the pit under the trestle, coughing
sporadically as little woodland creatures (rats? field mice?) begin to
sniff around her.) Gabe says he'll let Mike and John break the news to

Sharlene. But you haven't told us anything, they protest [that's just

what I was thinking]. They beg him to let them help step up the search

before it's too late - tracker dogs, National Guard, whatever it takes,

money no object. John observes a distraught Gary and Sharlene share a

hug in the squad room.
Final shot of Josie and her rodent friends down in the pit, with the

sound of steam pipes discharging and water dripping. FREEZE FRAME.

That's all,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
