CANDLELIGHT VIGIL
Cast of Thousands

Morgan seethes as he watches Fax hand Cass a candle, at the impromptu
candlelight memorial gathering outside the police station. Gary and Josie
convince Morgan to keep cool, they still need his inside help to gather
enough evidence to nail Fax for the killings. *** Maggie jealously watches
Nick and Sofia lock eyes across the crowd, and Rachel sees her go plant
herself next to Nick to stake her claim. Matt appears beside Sofia,
offers to take her home, but it only reminds her of the night she and Nick
tried to elope, she can't face that yet. *** Bobby appears behind Jake and
Vicky, who are remembering Ryan and Bridget in the candlelight. *** Gabe
tensely studies the crowd, and tells Lorna he can feel the presence of the
killer somewhere in the gathering.

Felicia wants to take Cass home, but he wants to thank everyone for
their show of support. Felicia quiets the Burrells' choir and the crowd,
and Cass thanks them with trembling voice, on behalf of his little girl
Charlie, his brother Morgan, and his wife... he breaks down on Felicia's
shoulder. Morgan joins them, he and Felicia assure Cass he doesn't have
to continue, but he insists. He tells the crowd he knows Frankie is here
and feels their love; despite the way the Herald has been blasting the
cops for their slow progress (Jake winces), Frankie was working with Gabe
and had faith in the department, and is sending them good vibes even now -
we should give them our full support, the killer will be caught. Morgan
echoes the sentiment, thanks the crowd for coming - be careful getting
home. Morgan and Felicia help Cass blow out his candle together. Morgan
and Cass embrace; Morgan says he has to stay and finish up some work, and
asks Felicia to take Cass home. She promises to stay with him, asks
Morgan to let John know where she is, and they exit [see below].

Matt appears with the latest edition of the Herald, and growls at
Jake for his incendiary coverage. Vicky sticks up for Jake, who says he's
just doing his job. I just hope you don't regret this, says Matt,
exiting. Jake looks uncomfortable, tells Vicky he has something to take
care of, and exits. Bobby asks Vicky if he can skip work on her house
tomorrow, the schedule is tight at the hospital construction in
preparation for the Trauma Center fundraiser tomorrow. Did you know the
victims? he asks. Yes I did, she answers, adding her flower to the
memorial display.

Nick is surprised [so was I] that Maggie carried Frankie's picture in
her purse, it was a nice gesture to add it to the memorial. She admits
she took it from the table when she moved out, she and Frankie were
starting to get closer - I'm not a totally awful person. Nick begins to
soften - then Sofia comes over. I understand you guys are married,
congratulations, she says as she walks by quickly [see below]. Donna and
Michael come up to Nick and Maggie; Mike wanted to stop by Cass's, but
he's busy with the Trauma Center opening. Nick wonders if Cass would want
him to drop by, Frankie was nice to him when he first hit town, and he
appreciated how Cass stood by Donna when she was the murder suspect.
Mike
thinks it would be a considerate gesture; he and Donna exit [see below].

Nick offers to drop Maggie at the apartment on his way, but Maggie wants
to come along, she used to live there and still feels like Cass and
Charlie are family. As they start to leave, they run into her doctor from
the other day in the ER, he asks about her health. She tries to shush him
up, but then Nick starts asking him about her morning sickness. She sends
Nick off to get the car, and tells the doc that she and Nick are
newlyweds. He thinks you're pregnant, notes the doc - but since we know
you're not, it's probably digestive problems. Yes, my own doctor is
treating me, she lies. The doc exits, but Rafael appears over her
shoulder - that doc won't forget you, he goads her. I have to meet my
husband, she retorts, exiting [see below].

Jake returns with a bunch of flowers for the memorial. Vicky is
touched, but Jake thinks it's a pathetic gesture, flowers just aren't
enough. Vicky wants to go pick up Charlie and take her home to Cass, it
helps me as much as them, Jake doesn't think he'd exactly be a welcome
sight to Cass; he says he'll be up late, she's welcome to call him anytime
if she feels like talking later. He exits; she turns to say something
else, but Bobby walks by and says goodnight [see below]. She exits [see
below].

UNDERCOVER DOC
Gabe/Gary/Josie/Morgan

Gabe, Gary, Josie and Morgan gather in Gabe's office for a progress
report on the case. Fax lied about never treating Blair, but that's no
proof. Gary and Josie hope Ozzie might recognize Fax's voice - hope he
pays off as a witness, says Gabe, since he nearly cost you your careers.

He asks Morgan if he's willing to get involved even deeper in the
investigation... Morgan agrees to wear a wire. Just act normal - or as
normal as you ever act, kids Gary, as Josie attaches the wire. Morgan
exits; Gabe isn't sure it will pay off, but Gary and Josie remind him
they're still on the trail of Margaret Banning. She was scheduled for
surgery, went to have it done in Chicago instead of here, then she
disappeared; but then her name showed up in Blair's safety deposit box
along with a stack of deposit slips, maybe Blair knew what had happened to
Banning and was blackmailing someone over it. Gary is about to meet with
Banning's neighbors; Gabe orders Josie to find out who Banning's Chicago
surgeon had been, and where Fax was before he came to B.C. Gary thanks
Gabe for going out on a limb to deputize him for this case, you won't
regret it. Gary and Josie exit.

Gary goes to Carlino's to meet with Banning's neighbors. They inform
him that Margaret had this routine surgery in Chicago, and somehow she
ended up dying from it, no one knew why. They give Gary the new address
of Banning's husband, who had moved to Chicago after his wife died.

Meanwhile, Fax finds Morgan in the doctors' lounge and produces a
file - I found Blair Baker's records, I forgot I treated her because I
just prescribed an over-the-counter remedy for sinusitis, no big deal.

O.K., no big deal, agrees Morgan, but Fax won't let it go: Why are you out
to get me, checking into my records, asking questions about my procedures?

Morgan advises him to seek treatment for his paranoia - it's part of my
new job as chief resident to check up on insurance records, etc. Since
when? asks John unhelpfully, entering the room - forget the paperwork,
you'll have plenty when the Trauma Center opens. Just trying to be
thorough, Morgan grins, as Fax leaves in a huff. John advises Morgan not
to goad Fax, he's still upset that you got the job he wanted. I just want
to know what makes him tick, Morgan replies.

Fax ends up in Rita's office, asking for permission to skip the
fundraiser, he's not feeling well. Jealous over Morgan's promotion? she
guesses - that's o.k., I understand, believe me. She reluctantly agrees
to let him skip the event. As he rises to exit, he winces in pain [Yay,
Frankie!]. Make good use of your time off, says Rita. I intend to, he
answers.

WELCOME BACK, NOW GO HOME
Sofia/Tony/Bobby/Raphael/Michael/Donna/Matt

The radio at Carlino's is playing "Nowhere to run to, baby, Nowhere
to hide..." as Sofia arrives, an emotional wreck. Cousin Tony welcomes
her back with open arms. Bobby also ends up at Carlino's and takes a
table. Tony wants to close up and take Sofia home, she's too weak and
shaky to be working, but she wants to keep busy. He gives her a glass of
water; she trips and spills it all over Bobby. No harm done, he chuckles,
but he warns them that the loose molding could trip a customer and bring a
lawsuit. Hire me to fix it, he smiles, and do us both a favor. They
agree; while Sofia dries his shirt, Bobby repairs the molding. She
returns the shirt as he finishes; Tony gives him a few bills in payment,
nice work. They all introduce themselves, and Sofia mentions that brother
Joey, the owner, is also a cop working on this serial killer case. Sofia
goes to get Bobby their nightly special on the house.

Later, Raphael comes in, sees Sofia, and welcomes her back from the
hospital. He looks forward to seeing her back at the mansion, but she's
not sure she'll be back - even if Carl hasn't replaced her yet, she'd feel
uncomfortable there. Well, you look marvelous, take care, he tells her,
retreating to his observation stool in the corner. Mike and Donna enter
and greet Sofia, can't believe Joe has you working already. He doesn't
exactly know, she admits. Mike asks if she'll be at the fundraiser
tomorrow. We'll see, she says. Bobby finishes his dinner, thanks Sofia
and Tony and starts to leave, but Mike spots him and introduces him to
Donna. She excuses herself for a moment, but insists he stay, she wants
to discuss Vicky's house. She leaves, and Bobby tells Mike you have a
lovely wife. We're not married anymore, says Mike. Bobby winces, I did
the same thing to your daughter when Grant stopped by to visit Kirkland.

And you lived to tell about it? Mike kids him. He continues, I know
you'll do a great job on Vicky's house, you have a great EYE for
detail...[or is that "cornea"?] Donna returns with her ideas for Vicky's
house. Thanks, says Bobby, but your daughter seems to know what she
wants. So do I, laughs Donna. Bobby exits, passing Matt in the doorway.

Tony greets Matt and asks him to get Sofia to go home. Matt greets Sofia,
who's happy to see him. He offers to take her home, but she says she
feels like a guest in Joe and Paulina's house. I'm living in my family's
house, Matt reminds her, it can be a real comfort in rough times. [Of
course, Matt has his own wing...] Besides, he adds, Joe's working late,
Paulina would probably appreciate the company and the help with Dante.

Sofia is convinced and exits with Matt, as Raphael watches them go.

MARY FRANCES, WE HARDLY KNEW YE
Matt/Rachel/Cass/Felicia/Maggie/Nick/Vicky/Charlie/Frankie

As friends start to gather at Cass's house for coffee, Matt presses
Rachel about Carl's absence, hope he's back in time for Frankie's funeral
tomorrow. Me too, she answers, I've called him at the Chicago Biltmore
but he won't call me back.

Suddenly she remembers the Trauma Center fundraiser tomorrow night.

Felicia regrets the timing, but Cass disagrees; Frankie thought your
father's work was important, Nick; it wouldn't have mattered in this case,
but the Center will save other lives and spare their families what we're
going through right now. Besides, she'd want her memorial to celebrate
life, she'd approve of the timing of the fundraiser. Maggie brings Cass a
plate of cookies, it was all the sweets she could find. He admits with a
sad smile, Frankie always wanted me to eat healthy, this was my private
stash - not that I was fooling Frankie any, you can't keep secrets from a
psychic so I eventually wised up and stopped trying. Let that be a lesson
Maggie, he adds, if you want a happy marriage, no secrets. They start to
remember things about Frankie; Felicia remembers these blue dishes they're
using now, she couldn't resist buying them, then they had to repaint the
whole kitchen to match; and her fondness for a certain drag queen named
Krystal Lake (long story, you had to be there, they tell Nick and Maggie).

Meanwhile, Matt steps away with his cell phone and leaves a scathing
message at Carl's hotel: You claim to be a part of this family, where the
hell are you when Mom needs you, covering your tracks? She's getting
suspicious, you'd better get back here now!

Cass describes their life together, with all its struggles, as mostly
screwball comedy - but she never went anywhere without those little
packets of tissues, in the pocket of everything she owned, in case someone
felt a crying jag coming on. He spots her jacket on the opposite chair -
I'll bet, if I put my hand in that pocket... He walks over, puts his hand
slowly into the pocket - and pulls out a packet of tissues. He takes the
jacket, sinks into the chair, and bursts into sobs - just give me a
minute. Vicky arrives with Charlie, who runs to her daddy's arms. It's
o.k., she says, taking a tissue from the packet in his hand and drying his
tears, which only brings more tears. He hugs her with a sad sigh.

Later, Maggie sits with Charlie on Cass and Frankie's bed, giving her
a heart-to-heart "my favorite things" speech - when I was little, and felt
bad, I used to think about the little things that made me happy - butter
pecan ice cream, getting my training wheels off my bike, hugging my dolly,
like you're doing now; and you have something I didn't, a daddy who really
loves you, Cass is the best dad a kid could have. Seeing him read to you,
or give you a ride on his shoulders, it makes me glad to see that a parent
and child can be happy together. Charlie smiles and falls asleep. Cass
appears in the doorway, where Nick has been standing and watching. Maggie
gets up to leave, giving Cass a hug - I love her, and I love you. He
thanks her for being so good with Charlie, I love you too, you'll make a
wonderful mother. She looks uncomfortable, as she and Nick exit.

Cleaning up the coffee things in the living room, Rachel and Felicia
talk about losing their own spouses: like Cass, Rachel lost Mac suddenly
without a chance to say goodbye; like Cass, Felicia lost Luke by violence,
it was traumatic for Lorna, Charlie will be devastated when she's old
enough to understand how Frankie actually died. It takes a long time for
life to go on, they agree, and you never really let go totally. The
doorbell rings, Felicia hopes it's John, and it is. He greets her with a
kiss and asks how everyone is doing. Meanwhile, Rachel reaches Carl by
phone; she chokes back the tears while she talks, disappointed when he
tells her he won't be able to return for the funeral. She talks him into
letting her join him in Chicago after the memorial.

Later, while Felicia checks on Charlie, John tells Cass he still
considers him family; they embrace. Felicia returns and Cass tells them
to go home. We can stay, she assures him, but he says he'll be fine, see
you tomorrow. He walks them out; they look up at the starry sky, and Cass
remembers that Frankie had said everyone had their own star, one for
everyone who ever lived; it's where we go between lifetimes, returning
time after time until we get it right. He continues, she believed that
she and I still had some unresolved issues to work out, and we'd be
spending several more lifetimes together. Felicia strokes his cheek, and
he returns to the house. He surveys the big, empty living room, then
crosses to the open window in the alcove. He kneels on the windowseat and
looks up at the sky: I hope you're right, Mary Francis, he whispers. A
sudden breeze stirs the famous Frankie windchimes. He stares at them,
clasping his hands across his aching heart.

GIVE ME REWRITE
Jake/Vicky/Bobby

From his bedroom, Jake calls Marty at the paper - it's been put to
bed, but Jake doesn't care, he owns this paper, he wants the issue redone
- don't let the staff leave, I'll pay them triple time - all out of my own
pocket, won't cost the Herald a dime - now take this down, here's your new
headline...

Later, Jake has dozed off, the phone on his chest. It rings, waking
him up. It's Vicky, you said to call anytime. Since when do you listen
to me? he kids. Maybe I'm finally getting smart, she answers; I was
sitting here thinking about Frankie, and I wanted to hear a familiar voice
- so say something. How about those Cubs, he quips. I love you,
McKinnon, she smiles; where'd you go so fast, hot date? No, just some
business to take care of, he replies.

Meanwhile, Bobby crosses the town square and picks up a copy of the
revamped Herald: SPECIAL EDITION, In Memoriam, reads the banner
headline,
with a big photo of Frankie.

FAX HUNT
Gary/Josie/Gabe/Tibbs/Fax

Gary and Josie report back to Gabe about Margaret Banning's
neighbors' statement. They wonder if maybe Fax was working at that
Chicago hospital where Banning died? Gary will head to Chicago to talk to
Mr. Banning; Josie expects to go with him, but Gabe orders her to stay and
help coordinate operations. As they exit, Gabe calls in Tibbs and orders
him to put a tail on Fax. Tibbs exits, but soon rushes back to the
station and informs Gabe that their tail on Fax was a bust - he was
supposed to be working, but when we arrived, he was gone, we lost him!

Meanwhile, Fax is skulking around the square [right outside the
police station, I believe...]; Gary and Josie stroll solemnly across the
square and pause to kiss and embrace, as Fax peers out from around the
corner of a building. FREEZE FRAME.

Yours desolately,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
