Here is the update for Another World for Friday, August 9, 1996 - RK-K's
(second) debut episode, if you're into that sort of thing... Fans might
remember, his first debut had certain similarities!

* Sofia dumps Nick; Maggie bluffs
* Jake and Vicky talk about their feelings; both later seek advice
* Mike hires Bobby to restore Vicky's house

SOPHIA'S CHOICE
Rachel/Maggie/Morgan/Sofia/Nick

The doctor examining Maggie informs her that Rafael was wrong, she's
not really pregnant. She's obviously not surprised; she confirms that
she's covered by doctor/patient confidentiality, the doc's lips are
sealed, no one needs to find out she's lying.

After visiting with Sofia, Rachel exits and runs into Nick in the
hallway. She tells him Sofia asked to see him. He rushes off eagerly.

Maggie emerges and sees him dash off, and confronts Rachel - are Nick and
Sofia getting back together? I have no idea, says Rachel, we talked about
forgiveness, maybe she wants to forgive him. Maggie wants to intercept
them, and Rachel tries to stop her. This doesn't involve you, says
Rachel, Nick obviously loves Sofia, let them settle things, then maybe
he'll be ready to work things out with you about the baby. But Maggie
can't wait, and rushes off toward Sofia's room after Nick.

In Sofia's room, Morgan is checking her chart and remarks how she's
well on the road to recovery, why the turn-around? She tells him she's
figured out what she has to do and she feels better about things now. He
tells her at this rate she'll be able to be released next week, and he
wants to send her to x-ray to confirm her improvement. Not yet, she says,
I need to see Nick first. Morgan is afraid she could have a relapse if
she sees Nick, but she insists it's what she wants, she's the only one who
can help Nick through the mess he's in.

Nick rushes up, but the nurse won't let him in while the doc is with
her. Morgan looks up and sees Nick peering through the window. He exits
and sends Nick in with a warning - she's doing better, don't upset her,
remember what happened last time. Nick promises to be careful, and he
enters the room. She thanks him for coming and apologizes for getting so
riled up last time [what a martyr!]. He notices hopefully that she still
has his ring. She tells him to sit down, she has something important to
say. Maggie shows up at the window and gives it a childish rap when she
sees them together. They look up and spot her, and Sofia tells Nick to
bring Maggie in, I need to talk to both of you. Nick is obviously
annoyed. Maggie rushes in, pretending to be concerned about Sofia, but
really afraid she's too late to keep them apart. She tries to hang all
over Nick to make it seem like they're together, while Nick keeps
squirming away. Sofia says she's talked with Matt and Rachel and Morgan,
and realized she was only hurting herself by staying angry, so she's
decided to forgive Nick for hurting her, she knows he never meant for it
to happen. I swear I'll never hurt you again, he sighs gratefully. No,
you won't she says, because of what this ring means; please take it. She
hands him the ring; Do you want me to put it back on your finger? Nick
asks, confused. Maggie gets upset and tries to leave, but Sofia wants her
to stay. I've had it rough lately, she says, but it's nothing compared to
the tough time ahead of you two as young parents. It's too late to lay
blame, she adds, there's a baby now - you two have to get married, and
make a home for your child. We have no future together now, she tells
Nick, you need to give this ring to Maggie, you can't let your child grow
up without a father like you did. Nick tries to protest, I could never
marry Maggie, I don't love her, I love you. But Sofia is about to lose
it, and she asks them both to leave. They exit, and Sofia turns her face
to the pillow and starts to cry.

Morgan returns, finds Sofia in tears and tries to comfort her. She
confesses that she thought she'd feel better once she resolved things with
Nick, but she still loves him and always will.

Maggie chases Nick down the corridor, insisting that Sofia was right,
they have to do the right thing and provide a home for their baby - we
have to get married. "Maggie, are you BRAIN-DEAD?" Nick shouts [lucky
guess], "I am not gonna marry you, I can't marry somebody I don't love!"

She protests that this baby is both of their responsibility - do you know
how it feels, she wails, to give your heart and soul to someone and then
have them turn their back on you? Yes I do, he yells, it's happening to
me right now. He assures her he won't abandon his child, they'll figure
things out later, but we'll never be one big happy family. So, she
deduces, you intend to be a father, but not a husband? She announces that
she has no intention of raising their child alone - if he wants nothing to
do with her, she has no choice but - to end the pregnancy! [Shouldn't be
difficult, eh?]

JAKE STRIKES OUT
Jake/Vicky/Chris

Watersoaked and laughing from stopping the leak in the bathroom sink,
Jake and Vicky end up in a spontaneous lip-lock. They pull away with
awkward apologies, then Jake tries to make a hasty escape, but Vicky had
accidentally pulled off the doorknob and they're locked in. Maybe it's
just as well, she suggests. Jake just wants to get out of there, tries
breaking the door down a couple of times, and only ends up with a sore
arm. Vicky thinks they should talk about what happened. She realizes it
wasn't all one-sided, she was kissing him back, she's not sure why. He
claims he just got carried away, seeing her in the night, her eyes - just
forget it ever happened, you love Ryan, I could never take his place.

She's devastated that she's been so insensitive lately, never saw this
coming, she doesn't want to ruin their friendship; she also admits he was
right, she's been living in the past. I know I have to let go of Ryan,
she moans - but I don't want to lose you, too! That will never happen, he
assures her. They draw close again, their lips brush, then Jake insists
he has to go, and he takes another run at the door. Vicky sits,
overwhelmed.

They get out somehow, and Jake tries some makeshift repairs upstairs
while Vicky dries off downstairs. As she hears him yelp in pain, she
thoughtfully goes to the fireplace and picks up Ryan's badge and photo.

Jake returns rubbing his hand, and sees her give the picture one last
gaze, then put the items in a storage box. He apologizes for his marginal
handyman skills, then they agree to not be embarrassed about the kiss,
it'll never happen again, their friendship is too important to mess it up.

Can you imagine us as a couple? she tries to joke. They draw close,
touching each other's faces, shoulders, nose to nose - then Jake gives her
a typical cocky Jake smile and exits.

Jake ends up at Carlino's; he descends upon Chris and starts playing
publisher. Chris points out he's been AWOL for weeks. I've been
distracted but I'm back now, Jake insists. Chris is glad to have him back
at work, but he's skeptical of the sudden reversal, especially when Jake
starts ordering double vodkas. Chris needles Jake about being hung up on
Vicky. Jake admits he had feelings for her, and foolishly acted on those
feelings by kissing her, but she doesn't feel the same way. Chris
sympathizes, but Jake claims he's glad it happened, now that he knows
where things stand, he can move on with his life. Vicky and I will always
be best friends, he insists, that's a big deal; and I can save all those
other complicated feelings for when I find the right woman to give them
to. [Like Paulina?] He raises his glass and drinks a toast: "To that one
true love." Although Jake insists he's back on track for good, Chris
thinks he's lost his edge by mooning over Vicky. You have to focus on the
paper, get rid of any excess baggage - and if you want a woman, there are
dozens of beautiful women just sitting home and waiting for Jake McKinnon
to give them a call. He exits; Jake pulls out his little black book and
starts thumbing through it...

Meanwhile, Vicky goes to visit Ryan's grave, and asks for his help
with her current problem. She tells him about her new house that Bridget
bought her, it should have been our house. She says she can visualize
them gathering as a family around the fireplace, and their Christmas tree,
and sometimes she can see him pushing her in the tree swing in the back
yard - But it's not real, she says, you know it, and I know it, finally.

You gave me more love than anyone could wish for in a lifetime, she adds
tearfully, I don't know how to let go...

MICHAEL'S HIRED HAND
Michael/Rachel/Bobby/Vicky

A naked guy is lying in bed, his face hidden. His phone rings; the
machine records the incoming call from Michael: Bobby, I need you to do
some work for my daughter, call me at the hospital. The guy turns on a
country station on the radio and rises to get dressed. Later we see he's
pulled on his jeans, boots and shirt. He switches off the music and the
lamp and exits.

Michael arrives at the hospital and asks nurse Kathy if she's seen a
tall, lanky construction worker with dark hair? You mean Bobby Reno,
everyone knows Bobby, she swoons - no, I haven't seen him yet today. Tell
him I need to see him, I'll be around, Mike tells her. He turns and runs
right into Rachel, who wants him to help her get Nick and Maggie to sit
down and make some serious decisions about this baby. [Note: why, oh WHY
does everyone take the lying little tramp's word for it about her
pregnancy? Did the stalker put something in the water supply that makes
everyone STUPID??? Or was it Cecile?]
Bobby saunters into the hospital; the giggling, swooning nurses flirt
with him, then tell him Mr. Hudson is looking for him. (We still haven't
seen his face.) He soon runs into Michael, who tells him he's left a
message on Vicky's machine as well - I want you to take a look at her
house; the decision is up to her, she has to like you and your work, but
I'll tell her I recommend you. Will do, boss, says Bobby.

Later, Bobby appears on Vicky's front porch and knocks on the door.

Vicky, thinking Jake has returned, comes down the stairs, grumbling that
she thought they'd settled everything before. She opens the door, and we
see his face for the first time. [It's SAM FOWLER!] She takes one look,
and sinks to the floor in a dead faint. FREEZE FRAME.

Lines of the Day:

Jake (to Chris, about his prying into Jake's love life): "I was right,
you are nosy, you're very nosy. Bad boy!"

Chris (to Tony, pointing at Jake): "See this? This is alcohol. This is
a motivated publisher on alcohol. Any questions?"

Later,

Vicky (vkorosei@sinclair.edu)
